Hello, bill1721.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
Try the steps in section six of the article below.
6. Reset the Lockdown folder
Resetting the Lockdown folder can resolve issues with starting the backup session or saving the backup. If you can back up in a new user, don't reset the Lockdown folder. Issues with the Lockdown folder occur across all users; they aren't user-specific. Follow these steps to reset the Lockdown folder:
Mac OS X
Disconnect all iOS devices from your computer and quit iTunes.
From the Finder, choose Go > Go to folder.
Type the following and then press Return: /var/db/lockdown.
Choose View > as Icons.
The Finder window should display one or more files with long alphanumeric file names.
In the Finder, choose Edit > Select all.
Choose File > Move to Trash. Enter an administrator password if prompted.
Note: Don't delete the Lockdown folder itself. Delete only the files contained inside the Lockdown folder.
Reconnect your iOS device and open iTunes.
iOS: Troubleshooting backup issues in iTunes
http://support.apple.com/kb/ts2529
If the issue persists after the steps are processed, try reinstalling iTunes.
Regards,
Jason H.

My Ipod Touch is disabled and when I connect to Itunes to recover it, it states that itiTunes could not connect to the iPod touch “iPod touch” because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your passcode on the iPod touch before it can recover.
Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

For how to restore:
iTunes: Restoring iOS software
To restore from backup see:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes should say it found an iPod in recovery mode. -
I have a 4th gen. Itouch wiht IOS4 and i want to update it, but when i click the update button in ITunes it says "contacting IPod software server" and it looks like it is loading. However, after about 5 seconds it stops and says "ITunes could not connect to the IPod software server". I found the apple webpage that is supposed to help me, but when i went to the LAN settings in the control panel i found that 'Automatically detect settings" was already checked. If yo mean the iPod will not connect to your wifi network:
Does the iPod connect to other networks?
Do other devices now connect?
Try:
- Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
- Power off and then back on the router

Please People I need some help.My iPod is disabled and when I connect it to iTunes it says: Itunes could not connect to the ipod because it is locked with a passcode...how can I do it?

Itunes could not connect to your ipod because it is lock with with a passcode
itunes could not connect to your ipod because it is lock with with a passcode.
If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.
You may have to force iPad/iPod into Recovery Mode

I have an Ipod Touch 4G, Although I have tried two connection leads to the computer, it comes up with the message ' Itunes could not connect to "Dads Ipod" because an invalid response was received from the device'. I can access the contents of the device via the connection leads using 'My Computer' but not through Itunes as the message always appears!! Using WinVista Homebasic. Is this a known fault with the Ipod4 and VISTA? It works okay on a laptop, however, I would like an expert to take me through the steps to sort out my home desktop computer? Please help? Thanks in advance
