ITunes could not connect to the iPad because it is locked with a passcode.

I just bought a 64GB iPad in France on my journey. In Denmark we haven't got it yet, so there's no support for me yet...
In the french store they let me connect to iTunes on one of their Macs, so I could enter my new iPad. Then I played with it the rest of the day (didn't sync with my MacBook, cause it is being fixed) and also put in a pascode as I do with all my devices.
Next morning when I turned it on, it only showed the "connect to iTunes" symbol again, as if it was new. And when I connect to iTunes, iTunes only says "iTunes could not connect to the iPad because it is locked with a passcode. You must enter your pascode on the iPad before it can be used with iTunes"...
And that is a contradiction! I can't do what the iPad says and i can't do what iTunes says...
Any ideas? Any ways to reset it other than by holding down both buttons at a time, because I have tried that already.
Hopefully someone can help me, I really want to be able to use my new iPad

I have a much easier possible solution!!
I had this same issue, trying to connect my new iPhone 5s to my Windows computer's iTunes. I was getting two different error messages:
- iTunes could not connect to the iphone because it is locked with a passcode
- iTunes could not connect to the iphone because the device timed out
I found this thread, but did not like the idea of having to restore my iPhone and losing all my settings/data on the phone. After trying several different things, I discovered that I had 5 devices listed under my "Devices" that were authorized, so the real issue was that I had reached my limit. I had several issues with my old iPhone 5s, and had to have it replaced twice. As a result, I had several old iPhones listed under devices that I no longer had. Erasing those solved the problem, and my new phone connected just fine to iTunes. To get rid of the old devices, you can:
Open iTunes
-> click on "store" in the upper left corner
     ->  from the drop-down menu, select "view account"
          -> enter your password
               -> under "iTunes in the Cloud", click on the blue "Manage Devices >"
                    -> remove any old devices
This solved my problem. Hope it helps others as well!
