'itunes could not contact the ipod software...' On Mac!
Hi there!
When I try to restore my new 5th Gen 30G iPod using iTunes, I get an error message saying 'itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected ot the Internet'. But I can use the iTunes Store, and various other on-line applications.
There is an article on the Apple site about this problem for Windows, but there's no Mac-based solution. I'm having to restore my iPod thanks to everyone's favourite error message, (-48). Any help much appreciated!
I am having the same problem on my mac - is there anyone out there than can help us on this issue?

ITunes could not contact the iPod software update server
I am a teacher managing many iPod touches.
I am trying to update the ipod software to version 3.1.3 but using my macbook (10.5.8) I cannot reach the update server and a I get the following error - "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server". I am connected to the internet, I can access the iTunes store no problem.
Using my windows XP laptop I can access the update server and I am using the same network ID and the same proxy settings.
Any ideas?Forget the wireless modem part of the question. I tried plugging directly into my pc and still have the same problem...very frustrating!

Hello all, new to the forums.
I've been recieving the error message "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet". This problem didn't occur at all for the past 2 years of using itunes.
I've already scanned through numerous websites and forums for help, but none of them worked.
This set of instructions resulted in no change to any of the problems, though iTunes lists that as the supposed solution.
# Open Internet Options from control panel.
# Click the Connections tab.
# Click the LAN Settings button.
# Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
Others include installing IE7, which that didn't work either.
Can anyone help?Here it is:

Please help: Cannot update iPod though it says one is available.
I receive the following alert message:
iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the Internet. Make sure your Internet connection is active and try again.
I am connected and am even able to purchase songs on through iTunes.
The "solution" in (Article: 304468) DOESN'T WORK!!!!!
(From Article: 304468:
"Symptom: Some customers may notice the following alert message when trying to update or restore an iPod in iTunes 7 or later:
iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the Internet. Make sure your Internet connection is active and try again.
Internet access is required to download iPod software updates. However, if you are able to connect to the Internet with Internet Explorer and can also access the iTunes Store, see the solution below to resolve this issue.
Products affected
* iTunes 7 or later for Windows
* Any iPod model
Solution
1. From the Start menu, choose Control Panel.
2. Open the Internet Options control panel.
3. Click the Connections tab.
4. Click the LAN Settings button.
5. Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
6. Click OK in both windows.
7. Reopen iTunes and connect your iPod.
8. Update or Restore your iPod.
THIS DOESN'T WORK. Any other ideas as to what I can do to solve this? Thank you for any & all help in this matter.I had a similar problem and your link helped me to solve the problem. Recently I changed my ethernet network card and since then my itunes worked strangely: itunes store worked, podcasts worked, mini-store doesn't, ipod update doesn't and diagnostics says that I had no Internet connection. Attached you can see the report.
It's weired that itunes is based in LAN Connections for sometinhgs and not for the others. Crazy!
Thanks and good luck with your problem.
Javier

Itunes could not contact the iphone software update server 10/2013
I get this error everytime I plug my 5s or 4s into itunes. I have connectivity, no firewall, av etc to gs.apple.com. When iOS 7 launched, it crashed while veryifng the ipsw with the apple servers. I eventually had to plug my 4s into my desktop in order to get iOS 7 to properly install. Both are on the same network, so I think something is screwy with my itunes install. I've tried to remove completely, but still no go with either phone.

Any ideas? Remember, this is an iTunes error, not an iphone. I am able to access the iTunes store with no problem. Thanks!"itunes could not contact the iphone software update server because you are not connected to the internet"
With that one, try the following document:
iTunes 7 for Windows: iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server
(If that box is already checked, try unchecking and rechecking it, and then clicking okay.) -
Ok I’m completely lost here....
I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600), I updated iTunes to 11.0.2.25 and some other updates for windows last night on my laptop. I try connecting to download the iOS 6.1.2 update for my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 5 via iTunes. I am getting this message for both "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Everything was fine with connecting prior to running these updates because I downloaded the 6.1 update with no problems when it came out.
What I have done so far with which has made no difference:
Checked my internet connection
Changed my internet connection
Signed out of iTunes and then signed back in
Ran diagnostics via iTunes, comes back with: Network interfaces verified- Internet connection failed- Secure link to iTunes store verified
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-02-20 20:40:48.
Disabled firewall, spy sweeper, virus scanner
start>run>cmd> typed "netsh winsock reset"
Rebooted
Checked the parental controls in iTunes
Start>control panel>internet options>connections tab> lan settings> selected the "automatically detect settings"
Deleted iTunes and reinstalled iTunes
When I would "ping gs.apple.com" it would come back with "request timed out" no matter what internet connection I was on, so I went into the hosts file start>my computer>(C:)>WINDOWS>system32>drivers>ect>HOSTS and added "# 127.0.0.1 gs.apple.com". Now it will ping gs.apple.com just fine but still comes up with the "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet" message in iTunes when i try to download the update.
If anyone can come up with any ideas that I haven’t tried, please let me know. This is keeping me back from updating both of my phones along with if anything should ever happen to them; restores as well.im computer is connected i can go to the apple store through itunes but when i plug my phone in i keep getting that alert... i plugged my phone in to update it after the apple loaded the itunes icon and a usb showed up.

Hi to all,
I tried to update my nephew iphone 4 version 4.3.4 (8k2), I did back-up everything before attempting to update and the result when I click down-load and update, it does not update instead it says, itunes could not contact the iphone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. I did check my wire-less connections and the connection from my PC to wire-less is hundred percent okay. I did search using google.com to confirm and my connections is good. Is there any problem regardings my firewalls or any help will be appreciated. ThanksHi bosefire,

i cant update my iphone and i tried going on my pc on itunes and clicking check for update button but it says that "itunes could not contact the iphone software update server because you are not connected to the internet". But i checked my internet on both my pc and iphone and tried again but it still says the same thing. plzz plzz help
Were you definitely connected to the internet at the time? If you don't have iOS 5 on your iPhone then the only way to update it would be via iTunes, once updated to the latest version of iOS you'll be able to update your iPhone without connecting to iTunes "over-the-air".
Before updating however it goes without saying to Backup your iPhone, this should happen by default upon connecting your iPhone to iTunes.
Regards,
Steve
