ITunes could not restore iPhone because the iPhone disconnected

I cannot restore my iPhone from my encrypted backup. iTunes begins the restore process displaying 2 hours remaining and after about 45 minutes I get a message on the screen that iTunes could not restore the iPhone because it disconnected. It also says restore failed in the phone.
I have tried multiple things: reinstalling iTunes, resetting sync history, trying to restore on an IPhone 3GS, trying a different cable and both USB ports on my computer and unchecking the 'allow computer to turn off this device to save power' in the USB options on device manager.
I visited the Apple store after exhausted all of the options I listed and they suggested try restoring from another computer. They said it is not a corrupted backup. I tried on another windows laptop but that did not work either.
The size of the backup is 14.8gb. It took approx. an hour to backup the phone.
I found others with the similar problem on this thread. Theirs is not a restore problem it's a backup one.

I have searched google and have found iPad users with the same problem:

Please help ...
Is there a way to remove the encryption in itunes?
Without restoring the mobile?
Because the restore fail for mobile ..

Thank you

  • I changed my iPhone lately but i can't restore my last backup since it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I don't know where to put the password to make it happen... Any suggestions?

    Hey guys,
I just bought a new iPhone but i can't restore my backup files beacuse it keeps saying "itunes could not restore backup because the password was incorrect" but I really don't know where to put the password to restore it. I really have some files that are meaningful for me so I really need help. Any suggestions anyone?

Select your iDevice in the iTunes.
Choose the Summary screen (tab) and scroll to the bottom of the screen.
    Then un-select Encrypt iPhone backup.
iTunes will then prompt you to “Enter the password to unlock your iPhone backup”, enter the password you set originally.

  • Error--iTunes could not back up because the iPod disconnected

Today for the first time I am beginning to get an error message every time I attempt to sync my iPod Touch. When I click on Sync, it appears to be going through all the proper sequence of steps. In the window at the top, it says it's starting the sync, backing up, preparing to sync, then syncing music, contacts, etc. Then when it gets to "finishing sync," a window pops up that says, "iTunes could not back up the iPod 'myname' because the iPod disconnected." Yet, in the sidebar under devices, it still shows up as being connected and I can click on any of the content areas in the sidebar and see the titles. There is still an Eject button to the right of the battery level indicator.
I've seen other similar threads about disconnections, not not this exact problem. I tried deleting all the iTunes and iPod plists in Preferences, but that didn't help.
Why did it just start doing this now and what can be done to fix this? I have iOS 4.2.1 on the device and recently updated to OS 10.6.6. Could that new system update of iTunes have created the problem?

I have the same problem tonight for the first time. I restarted the iPod and my powerbook then used disk utilities to repair disk permissions then tried again. It got stuck on step 4 13 of 13 songs. Each time I try it gets a few more songs over before it freezes. Then I get an error message; Unknown sync error
    0xE800400B.
While it is syncing the "s" on "slide to cancel" on the iPod screen is flashing. Finally iTunes freezes and I have to "force quit".
In previous tries the iPod turned off yet it still appeared on the list of devices in iTunes even after getting the "unknown error" message.

  • ITunes could not restore iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored...

I replaced a faulty iPhone 4S with a new handset today, another iPhone 4S.  I was certain to backup my previous iPhone 4S to iTunes on my PC before returning the faulty unit.  The new phone was 'set up' at the Apple Store and updated to the current iOS, 7.0.4, as was the faulty unit prior to replacement.  Upon connecting the new unit to iTunes to restore to the most recent restore point from earlier in the day, the following message was shown:
"iTunes could not restore iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored."
I've browsed other forums and have contacted the Apple Store Genius Bar, and will hear from the Lead Genius tomorrow.  In the meantime, I am hoping someone may have information for me on what I may need to do in order to restore my phone as I'd anticipated doing by now.  My photos, email and text messages are what is affected and have not repopulated.  My music is accessable via iCloud without a problem and my contacts were kept via SIM.  I regularly copy my Camera Roll from my iPhone to my computer, and most of my photos are still viewable via Apple TV/My Photo Stream however only through the photos last saved.  The 348 recent photos that were on my faulty unit, and viewable in My Photo Stream were presumedly safe, but have disappeared.
I have yet to shut down or restart my computer, nor have I exited out of iTunes, for the simple reason that I'd anticipated returning home with the new handset and plug it into my computer to restore right away.  I did, but that's as far as I've gotten.
Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you!

Had the exact same problem whilst upgrading my iphone 4 to ios5. Lost all my data.
Backed up ios 4.3 (8F190) iphone4. Upgraded to ios 5.1 (9B176), and then tried to restore.
No joy, repeated the restore attempts countless times - lost all my data
Tried again with a simulated test.
Created a new itunes account on a new PC (64-bit windows 7), latest itunes(10.6.1.7- 64 bit).
As my data is toast, I'm using the ios 5.1 phone to try to see if it was me or an apple bug, or something elsewhich caused this to happen.
After quite a few more hours at it, it looks like a bug in iTunes / ios. I would be very happy to be wrong, though.
Tried repeatedly restoring an ios 4.3 backup to 5.1 - no joy.
Happy to try again - it does restore partially (got the call register transferred, but no SMS'es or anything else).
    Any ideas?

  • When trying to sync or listen to songs in itunes library it says the song on itunes could not be used because the original file could not be found. I am using windows 7.

I have imported cds into my itunes and they appear on my playlist, but when I try to sync to my ipod or listen to them on my computer a message comes up stateing " the songs on itunes could not be used because the original file could not be found".  I have not deleted them and am importing them the way I always have.  This problem has only been for the last 4 or 5 months. Since updating to the last 2 itunes versions.

The message means that iTunes can not find the original imported music files. iTunes should display a red exclamation mark next to the songs it can not find. You will need to look on your hard drive for the songs/files and than correct the file path in iTunes or just delete the files in your iTunes library and import them again.

  • ITunes could not copy ''file'' because the file could not be written

Recently, I have been experiencing some problems with iTunes and my iPad 2. Whenever I try to sync movies into my iPad, I get the error message ''iTunes could not copy ''file'' because the file could not be written''. This message always appears whenever I try to sync a few movies at once. When I check my iPad after it's synced, I find that a few of my movies successfully sync into my iPad, and can be played. However, some movies show up on my iPad but cannot be played. The video thumbnail just shows a picture of a blank TV screen. Is there any way where I can fix this problem? Thanks.

    Hi JimmySlax.
I was having the same issue with music and movies but it had been ok before. The sync would freeze on a random file and then i had to take out the USB cable to clear it. After trying all sorts of things i saw someone mentioning about Anti virus and firewalls. I am using McAfee so i disabled it as a test. After this i could sync music and movies without issue!!!!! So in my case the firewall/anti virus was causing a problem. McAfee updates itself a lot so I am guessing something has happened in a recent update that impacted iTunes.I am not sure if this kind of thing is also causing your problem but it sounds very familiar.
    Hope this helps.

  • ITunes could not restore iPhone (from backup) because not enough free space on *iPhone*?!

    Hey everyone,
I recently upgraded to iOS 6 and before I upgraded, I made sure to make a backup because I know upgrading to the new OS can often cause people to lose their things. After upgrading to iOS 6, I found I had everything except for all my messages and some of my contacts (it appears all contacts I added within the past 6-7 months or so are gone, but the older ones are there). I need my messages and those newer contacts, so I want to restore from the backup I made before upgrading to iOS 6, but unfortunately, I get an error message saying iTunes could not restore from backup because there is not enough free space on my iPhone. Note, not my computer or my hard disk, my iPhone. First of all I don't see why I would need free space on my iPhone to restore it, and secondly, I have about 5GBs of free space on it. What can I do?

Yes. Those are the only ones saved by iTunes, as the working assumption is that all the other photos are on your computer and thus can be synced from that source, without the backup duplicating them and taking long time and lots of space. Photos on the camera roll are assumed to be not yet Transferred.
    A few random-thoughts suggestions...
Not sure if you tried this multiple times, but it might worth doing. Just remember to cancell the Sync as soon after connecting so you don't overwrite the backup.
    1. Check if you still have an older backup that might have the pictures. Follow the instruction by user Linda Custer in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13011509#13011509
    2. Check the links in the More Like This box on the right, or do a search for your issue on these forums or on Google.
    3. Find third party utilities that treat the iPhone as an external USB disk and therefore allow for extracting photo files directly from the device, bypassing iTunes. Search here, Google or check MacUpdate:  http://www.macupdate.com/
And perhaps the most obvious, that I forgot to ask about:
    4. If you switched iCloud on, and selected backup to iCloud you should have a backup outside of your computer; just select the iCloud backup, instead of the local one, for Restore.
    5. If you switched iCloud on and checked PhotoStream on, you should have the camera roll photos in the cloud and can retrieve them from the cloud via the Web site, your Photo app, etc.
    Good luck.

  • ITunes could not sync contacts because the synch server failed to synch....

I have a laptop running Windows 7 (professional edition) 64 bit using Outlook 2010 and I get this same daggone message every time I try to synch contacts, calender, or notes (all Outlook 2010)...."iTunes could not synch contacts to the iPhone because the synch server failed to sync the iPhone."
I called Apple's tech "support" and they said unapologetically that iTunes doesn't work with Outlook 2010. ***!?! And further that the solution was to use Outlook 2003 or 2007. And gave NO indication that any solution was in the works.
QUESTION: Does anyone have a SANE solution that doesn't require a degree in Star Trek to implement to this exact problem? I know the problem is widespread so please only respond if you are having the exact same problem. Otherwise the variable make the feedback meaningless. Thanks in advance!!!

  • ITunes could not sync contacts because the iPod is disconnected

The iPod/Touch IS connected and syncronising music, photos and starting with the contacts sync. After 20 seconds or so the process stops and the alert message says:
"iTunes could not sync contacts on the iPod because the iPod is disconnected".
Have restarted the Mac, reconnected the iPod/Touch with the same result. I have also deleted iPhoto cache which was suggested in one of the forums discussions.
NOTE: I have made the same Sync with my regular iPod 160 and it works fine,
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

  • Itunes could not copy song because the file could not be converted.  Can anyone help

Synced Jeff Wayne's War of the World from Mac to Iphone - 1 track could not be copied - error message "the file could not be converted" popped.
Any suggestions as to problem and remedy?

This "Workaround" doesn't fix the fact that Itunes generate an error message because it is unable to convert the audio file ALTHOUGH the audio file is OK.
This problem started with Itunes 11.1.3, and it affects almost every album in my library for no reasons ...
Tried deleting all library file, creating a new library and re-importing audio file that I know are OK ... funny thing, it's not always the same file that create this bug.
Really a random bug ... reopened itunes with "compatibility option" set to "Windows XP SP3"   and  it's different tracks from the same album that can't be converted now.

  • HT1414 I just got a replacement iPhone 5 (64MB) for one with a cracked face, and tried to restore it.  Got an error message saying the iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available on the iPhone.  Now what?

I just replaced my iPhone 5 because of a cracked face.  I backed up the old phone to iTunes.  When I tried to restore my data off of iTunes to the new phone, I got an error message saying that iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available on the new iPhone.  Now what?
I have Apple Care+, but I'll be darned if I can find any way to contact anyone at Apple to talk to about this.  They take your money, but make darned sure they don't have to support you unless you jump through a bunch of hoops first, like this site.

I've done a restore.. The phone was completely wiped back to factory settings.. It then tells me there isn't enough space on the phone to restore from back up? How when the phone is empty?!

  • ITunes could not restore the iPhone "___'s iPhone" because the backup was corrupt or not compatible

Ok so bear with me here, it is somewhat of a long story.
I had been using an iPhone 4 for a while, with an old iTunes account that has all my stuff from over the years on it, on my computer. A week ago, I dropped by iPhone 4 in the sink and it got covered with water, despite quickly pulling it out, putting it in rice under a lamp, the phone was shot, and I was without a phone. My Dad, who is on the same AT&T plan with me, was using an iPhone 3. He was available for an upgrade, so he got a new iPhone, and gave me the iPhone 3. Now i'm not an apple master or anything but I have a good idea of what I am doing, normally, I backup my phone to my computer every few months. Basically everytime I plug it in to my computer which isn't very often because I just charge it with the wall charger. So got my SIM card with the same phone number and all, and obviously, while still being my number, it had my dads apps, messages, contacts and photos on it. So I bring it home, and plug it into my computer, I cancel the intial sync, and right click on the phone on the left side of iTunes and hit "restore from backup" I look through the list of backups, and the most recent one I see is from Dec 11, 2011. Which is surprsing because i'm pretty sure I had backed up since then, but I say whatever i'll still get contacts apps and most pictures back etc. So I hit it, and go through with it, and it tells me there was a more recent date of backing up, relieved, I click on that and continue, the normal bar comes up it says something like estimated time 30 minutes, so I walk away, come back 5 minutes later, and I get an error message saying, "iTunes could not restore the iPhone "____'s iPhone" because the backup was corrupt or is not compatible with the iPhone." Confused, I go back and try again, however this time I click on "old backup (the dec 11th one rather than the newer one) and the same thing happens after a few minutes. I go back a third time, and select a time from August of 2011. And I hit restore, and it goes through. However, this happened to be a backup I made right when I got my new iPhone 4, and therefore I basically restored my phone, to having nothing. Thats where I sit right now, with none of my contacts or pictures. I'm not sure if I backed up to iCloud or not and i'm not sure how to retrieve that. Some extra things: When I try to sync my iTunes library and apps onto the new iphone 3, I need to greatly reduce the number of songs and apps beacuse this iPhone is only an 8gb while the old one was 16, (I don't think that is the reason I am getting the error message though because when I sync it clearly says "Your iPhone does not have enough space). Also, this is obviously an iPhone 3, not an iPhone 4, updated with the most recent iTunes software, which, I believe is 5.1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have over 1,400 pictures saved on my old phone (very important things to me) and a contact list of over 300 including important friends, coaches, teachers and workers.
Thank you very much, if it doesn't say my email on here try me at [email protected]
    Thanks again
    -Drew
Edit: The current phone is an iPhone 3G, not a 3Gs.

    ashleyfrg2,
you will need to restore your phone as a new device and NOT from backup.  If you've been using your phone as recommended, you should have minimal data loss:  Photos should have been imported to your computer right after taking them; contacts should be safe in a cloud service or on your computer.  You CANNOT downgrade to 4.3.3.

  • HT4972 After upgrading iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1.1 getting the error "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored" HELP!

I attempted to upgrade my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.1.1. I selected 'back up' from the phone in the device menu and iTunes confirmed that the phone had been backed up. I then installed iOS 5.1.1 which wiped everything on the phone & now I am getting the error "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored".
I have tried restoring factory settings but iTunes simply will not restore from back up & I'm not sure what else to do!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I have the same issue and I KNOW my backup IS good. What happen is when you try to restore your phone apple says something like can I check for new updates and if you choose no, it just takes you back to the restore screen and a loop from then on.  If you dont update from you phone then when you back up you will have the 5.0.1 back up and then when you update to 5.1.1 and then try to restore the backup from 5.0.1 it say it EITHER corrupt or incompatible.. It is incompatible and its hard as **** to restore back to 5.0.1. I followed the restore to a T and still getting errors. I lost all text history and have to reset up email. All just because I wanted a 1.2 Gigs of "other" space back.
