Before updating to iOS6, I backed my iPhone up onto my PC, as I am aware that when updating an iPhone things like notes, contacts etc tend to disappear. However, after the update was complete, when I tried to 'restore back up' I keep getting the message "iTunes could not restore the iPhone because not enough free space is available of the iPhone". I don't understand why this message keeps coming up, because I have 20.96GB free space. All my contacts have gone, and I urgently need them for work. What can I do to solve this problem???
I suggest you delete some stuff off your phone so free up some memory and try again

I have a 32GB iPhone; only 13GB used!!! HELP! iCloud backup/restore did not work either! How can I resolve this problem to restore from back up.
If you're not a developer then you really should not have upgraded.
I'm unsure how you can fix this as you have already done a back-up on iOS 7 and apple don't support firmware downgrades. -

On April 13, 2013 i plugged my phone in and itunes immediately started an upgrade on my iphone 4 operating system to ios 6.1.3. ONce it completed my phone was restored to factury settings. When i tried restore my backup to the phone, i got the following message

I am so ****** because i can't figure out a way to at least get my photos from this back...its all lost
I spoke with an Apple rep that day named Jamie who was supposed to help me retrieve my data, but we couldn't figure it out and he asked me to call back in a day or so to get it done. When I called back, i left several messages and got no response. Now i try calling support and they want money before they will talk to me.
Somebody please help.
ThanksIf you restored your phone as new there should be plenty of free space on it. Check Settings>General>Usage to see how much free space you have.

I get this error occasionally since getting the iPhone5 in October. My last successful back up to thei Mac was yesterday. Tonight, no backup.
One time when this occurred I had trashed files, and after I emptied the Trash the sympton went away. Tonight I had files in the Trash and emptie the Trash before connecting my iPhone and now no backup allowed.
I have quit and relaunched iTunes, and unconnected and connected the iPhone tonight with no change in the symptom.
My next counter measure will be to reboot.

- I have 1.36 _terabytes_ of free space on my system disk.
- I have 2.1 _terabytes_ of free space on my Drobo[*] which contains my iTunes library.
My iPhone is an iPhone 5S 64Gb.
A backup should require, one would assume, less than 64Gb. In other words, a drop in the ocean of free space available to iTunes.
... and yet EVERY time I attempt a backup to my computer since getting my 5S it says:
'iTunes could not back up the iPhone "[name]'s iPhone" because not enough free space is available on this computer. Removing files and emptying the Trash will free up additional space.'
It's very clear that there's a bug given how much space I have available, and it's been present for 2+ months. :/ I had been able to back up my iPhone 4S.

There is plenty of space over 260gbAre you absolutely sure there's 20GB in use, and not that it has 20GB free? If you click on the hard drive icon on your desktop and click cmd-i to Get Info, what is the available space?

The GB size of the download file is the compressed size (like .zip or .dmg). When the file is installed/uncompressed it can be 2-3 times larger.

Hey everyone,
I recently upgraded to iOS 6 and before I upgraded, I made sure to make a backup because I know upgrading to the new OS can often cause people to lose their things. After upgrading to iOS 6, I found I had everything except for all my messages and some of my contacts (it appears all contacts I added within the past 6-7 months or so are gone, but the older ones are there). I need my messages and those newer contacts, so I want to restore from the backup I made before upgrading to iOS 6, but unfortunately, I get an error message saying iTunes could not restore from backup because there is not enough free space on my iPhone. Note, not my computer or my hard disk, my iPhone. First of all I don't see why I would need free space on my iPhone to restore it, and secondly, I have about 5GBs of free space on it. What can I do?Yes. Those are the only ones saved by iTunes, as the working assumption is that all the other photos are on your computer and thus can be synced from that source, without the backup duplicating them and taking long time and lots of space. Photos on the camera roll are assumed to be not yet Transferred.
A few random-thoughts suggestions...
Not sure if you tried this multiple times, but it might worth doing. Just remember to cancell the Sync as soon after connecting so you don't overwrite the backup.
1. Check if you still have an older backup that might have the pictures. Follow the instruction by user Linda Custer in this discussion: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13011509#13011509
2. Check the links in the More Like This box on the right, or do a search for your issue on these forums or on Google.
3. Find third party utilities that treat the iPhone as an external USB disk and therefore allow for extracting photo files directly from the device, bypassing iTunes. Search here, Google or check MacUpdate: http://www.macupdate.com/
And perhaps the most obvious, that I forgot to ask about:
4. If you switched iCloud on, and selected backup to iCloud you should have a backup outside of your computer; just select the iCloud backup, instead of the local one, for Restore.
5. If you switched iCloud on and checked PhotoStream on, you should have the camera roll photos in the cloud and can retrieve them from the cloud via the Web site, your Photo app, etc.

I lost my contacts and calendar, and photos since the iOS update and and it states that my iPhone cannot be synced because there is not enough free space to hold all of the items in the iTunes library (additional 1 MB required). Also it shows that I am over capacity on my Capacity ruler but how do I unload some of that stuff so that I can increase my capacity and perhaps get this synching to work again.
So frustrating!!On your iPhone go to settings>general>about and next to "Available" if you dont have much space then you will need to delete stuff on the phone to make room to take photos by deleting stuff on the phone.
In terms of syncing change what you are syncing and decide what you would really want and not want on your phone which would make what is syncing to the phone smaller. -

I'd like an answer to this one too. I need to backup my iphone5 and am getting the same message. My old laptop is pretty full. Isn't there a way to choose an external hard drive to back up to? If there is, I don't see it.

What do you do about it? Be more selective about what you're syncing to it. Don't try to sync your entire library, just what you actually want to take with you. If you want to take more with you than what you have room for, buy a phone with more storage capacity.
Alternately, you can have music automatically transcoded to a lower bitrate. Not in front of iTunes, so don't recall the exact wording. It takes much longer to sync the first time, but should consume much less space and you shouldn't take the time hit after the first full sync. -
