ITunes crashes editing video metadata

So, I'm importing h.264 videos of TV shows into iTunes. As you know, it defaults to putting the episodes into the "movies" tab. I go to the file and "get data" to change it to a TV show and around half of the time iTunes crashes when I hit the OK button. Interestingly, iTunes moves the actual file into the "TV Shows" folder before it crashes but doesn't move the show to the TV Show tab.
I have 7.4.3 & I reinstalled and it didn't help.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I don't want to claim that I have a solution, but I have something that worked for me.
My SATA drive is attached on a RAID controller, but I was not using a RAID configuration. I was able to make a BIOS selection to use IDE mode (so no RAID and no AHCI).
This change should normally require a reinstallation of the OS, but I was able to avoid that by preparing the machine first. The preparation involved doing a substantial registry merge according to the instructions posted here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314082/
Be aware of the caveats and warnings in the knowledge base article, including "Although Microsoft does not support this method..." Also be aware that this fix was designed for Windows XP, but several of us have found it can work in Vista. YMMV.
If it does work, you can make the same disk hardware act in IDE mode which completely cleared up my problems with displaying video content in iTunes/QT and also solved my issue with lengthy (20-30 mins) delay before synchronization with an iPOD .
I would warn again that this is a risky procedure. It may not work on your hardware, and could render you machine unbootable, with consequent loss of your important data. Even if that disaster doesn't happen, it can result in Windows Activation thinking that your hardware has changed too much so that you have to reactivate your Windows Vista by telephone.
Probably the value of this information is more to prove that SATA/AHCI operation is broken under Vista with my particular RAID contoller chipset and that this problem only shows when very heavy disk activity is demanded by an application, such as by iTunes.

  • ITunes freezes when editing video metadata

    Hi,
So I am trying to organize my video library and to do so I need to edit the metadata for the video files. When I do this, iTunes just stops responding.
All my video files are located on my server.
I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes to try and fix this.
Tried googleing for an answer for awhile but no luck.
Anyone know a fix to this?

Codec packs are notorious for causing iTunes problems.
Try searching c:\windows\SysWOW64 for files with Quicktime in the name.
    There should be just two:
    Quicktime.qts
    QuicktimeVR.qtx
If there are any other files or folders, try dragging them to the desktop ot any temporary folder.
    Does that make any difference.
After doing that, do you have the latest Quicktime installed, if not update it.
    http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win.html
Earlier versions of Quicktime can upset iTunes.

  • ITunes, ID3 Tags, and Metadata

    Oh hai der!
I'm new and I'm so sorry if this questioned has been answered before. But I've done some research on the web and I've got some questions about iTunes and what it does to my music.
First, here's my situation. I love iTunes, it's awesome, helps me edit my library beautifully. But that's only when all the songs, movies, videos, and so on have their information. Otherwise it's a huge mess. Which is what I'm dealing with.
I like to use XBMC. I own a Samsung Galaxy S2, and an iPod Touch. The files I've edited and whose data I've put in manually, show up wonderfully on my iPod. But not my Samsung and media library software, or other device. I was wondering if iTunes actually edits the metadata and ID3 tags of the actual file in my computer. Not just in the iTunes program. See, let's say I have a song titled "Track 01 ", and in iTunes I change the name of the track to "Yesterday". Will iTunes actually edit the title of the song WITHIN the file itself? Or just in iTunes itself? So that after I edit the title within iTunes, it shows up in other software, such as XBMC, and devices like my Galaxy S2 as "Yesterday" and not "Track 01"?
I don't get my music from iTunes. I've only got a few albums from iTunes, that's it. But for the rest, they're not from iTunes. It may not sound like a lot to most of you. But I've got a library that's over 50GB's large in music. That's over 8,000 songs. Only about 1,000 of those songs have their data such as lyrics, artwork, artist, album,  and so on. But for the rest of the 7,000 songs, it's just a mess. I've looked up many programs that edit my library for me. But I'm in a situation where I can't spend much money. So I'm looking for freeware. But that's not all.
I'm looking for a piece of software that'll implement lyrics, artwork, album, artist, etc, into the song file itself. Or just in iTunes? I know of TuneUp, and Rinse My Music. I was wondering if there was other software out there? I've also heard of Beets, but it seems way too complicated for me to install properly.
So to summarize, what I want to know is:
    1) Is there some freeware out there that'll help me edit my iTunes library?
    2) Does editing song info within iTunes actually do anything to the song file itself?
    3) Will I have to use some other software that organizes my media and actually edits a file's properties to display proper data?

Taken at face value, you're having trouble with an Apple Application Support program file there. (Apple Application Support is where single copies of program files used by multiple different Apple programs are kept.)
Let's try something relatively simple first. Restart the PC. Now head into your Add or Remove programs control panel, select "Apple Application Support", click "Change" and then click Repair.
If no joy after that, try the more rigorous uninstall/reinstall procedure from the following post (although it's for Vista and 7, just read "Computer" as "My Computer", read "Uninstall a program control panel" as "Add or Remove programs control panel" and assume the system is 32-bit, and you'll be doing the right things):

  • ITunes crashes when importing video (only)

I'm running 6.0.1, and have a new iPod. I wanted to use my g4 powerbook (1.33 MHz, 512 MB RAM, OS X Tiger 10.4.3) as my video library, and use my PC for my existing 350 GB music library. However, iTunes hangs with the beachball when I add any video (mpeg4 or h.264). The beach ball shows up for 2-3 seconds, and then iTunes closes, leaving me with an error report dialog box. Adding music to my library works fine, and the video files I'm using have added to my PC iTunes library and iPod with no issues at all. I've uninstalled iTunes and quicktime and reinstalled both (QT then iTunes) with no luck fixing the problem. This is SO frustrating, as I want to update my videos, iCal, address book, email all from my powerbook, and simply use my PC for music. I can't do this and no topics anywhere online seem to address this particular issue. This is the first time a piece of Apple software has crashed on me, and it does so consistently. Please help!

I have a similar problem. I am using 10.4.3 with iTines 6.01 and QT Pro 7.03. When I want to import a video file or when I want to watch the preview in the iTMS iTunes crashes straight away. No problems with music.
I have no idea what the reason could be. I think it has to to with the ltest update to 10.4.3, because everything works fine under 10.4.2 (with latest iTunes and QT).
Perhaps anybody has an idea what to do

  • ITunes crashed during sync, now Podcasts have sound but no video.

My wife has a 5th gen 30GB iPod. It has the latest system software from iPod Updater, and we're running the latest iTunes.
Yesterday she was doing a sync, and iTunes crashed on her in the middle of it. Now, even with an iPod Restore and reset, and a restart of her Windows XP machine, Podcasts won't play properly on the iPod. They play fine in iTunes, but only the audio portion plays on the iPod. Non-Podcast video (such as music videos) plays fine on the iPod.
    What happened here? What's wrong?
Thanks for any help in solving this.

    An update (and a solution):
Looks like the iTunes crash was only a clue as to what was happening elsewhere, and a slightly misleading clue at that.
Video Podcasts were placing themselves in the "Music" section on the iPod, and it was from there that we were attempting to play them. This worked just fine until iTunes's crash. After the crash, only the audio part would play.
It was only late last night that after lots of investigation my wife discovered that the video Podcasts were ALSO installing themselves into a "Videos > Video Podcasts" sub section!
It's stupidly obvious now, but was not yesterday: Video Podcasts will only play the audio portion when played from the "Music" section, but will play both audio and video when played from "Video > Video Podcasts". For some reason we had not discovered the "Video Podcasts" subsection until last night.
Then a second solution was discovered to have been necessary. One Podcast video still would not play properly, even from the correct section. This turned out to be due to a need to "Convert" it to play on the iPod. This page has the answer to that:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301461
iTunes online Help has all the answers to this, but we thought it was an iPod problem, and the iPod manual was no help at all. The answers to this in iTunes Help are found under:
    "Browsing and watching videos"
    and
"Converting a video to work with iPod"
It really helps to PRINT those two subjects, so you can refer to the paper page instead of trying to toggle back and forth between the iTunes screen and its Help screen.
I hope this topic helps someone else.

  • ITunes crashes whenever I try to sync videos

    Hey everyone,
Just yesterday I purchased a new 6th Gen iPod Classic, and syncing music is fine, but when it comes to syncing videos it's a totally different story.
I sync my iPod (which has all the music on) and there are no more songs to go on it, so I decide to put on some videos. However, when I try to sync the iPod again, intending for videos to go on, iTunes crashes and asks me to send an error report. I've tried this about a million times now, and have tried resetting my iPod, all with no luck.
Has anyone else had this problem and know how to make the videos sync without me having to pull out more hair from my head?!

You should try an alternative iPod manager such as these http://www.copytrans.net/helpcopytrans.php#22

  • ITunes crashes when I sync videos

I took some videos on my iPhone 4 on holiday.  I copied them to my pc to upload more easily.  Now when i try to sync them back to iTunes, iTunes crashes.  It only happens when I sync with videos.  If I sync with them unchecked, everything works fine.
I've seen other posts on this but still cannot find a resolution.  I've tried using Windows 7 and XP for this but the result is the same - no luck.  I've also tried uploading videos from my iPod Nano but just the same

OK.  Sorted this despte a call from tech support at Apple.
It's the latest version of iTunes, 10.4. that is at the heart of the problem from what I have learned.
I uninstalled iTunes completely.  Then a file called ituneslibrary.itb has to be renamed as .bak (if you don't do this, the earlier version of iTunes will not install.  Use 'search' to locate it).
Find the earlier version from somewhere like oldapps. com.  Download and instal iTunes 10.3
Sorted!  (Well it's worked for both my wife's and my computers)
Hope this is of some use

  • Can't delete video line item from iTunes; crashes instead!

I have a line item for video in my iTunes library that I can't delete; it crashes iTunes instead.
When I right-click on the item, I get an error message that wants to send info to Microsoft before I can Clear it or uncheck it.
I've deleted the original video file and all other items in the library are responsive. I can still import music and video however when I try to sync with my iPod, it downloads everything until it gets to this line item and then iTunes crashes and closes.
    Frustrating... Any ideas?
    emachine   Windows XP   60GB iPod

If Zevoneer's suggestion didn't work you can try just
clearing your whole library by pressing Ctrl+A & Del,
then adding it again by going File>Add folder to
library and add the folders you want.
If that still doesn't work (it doesn't let you clear
the library), uninstall then reinstall iTunes. That
    should clear the library.
Well, looks like the simplest solution was the correct one. I tried to delete my library but it crashed when it got to the problem line item. So I ended up reinstalling iTunes and the line item was successfully deleted. (Now I get to recompile my library of 7400 songs and 200 videos. I'll get back with ya'll next month!)
Thanks for all the help everyone!

  • How to get iTunes to update artist/album folder names after editing file metadata

If I edit the metadata for a song, such as the song title, it updates the actual file on my computer as well. However, if I edit the album name or artist name, it does not update the artist or album folders. Is there a way to force iTunes to do this? I have music coming from 3 different sources, Amazon, iTunes, and CD rips, and it's very common for artist names to appear differently from different sources. I'd like to be able to just add everything to iTunes, update any inconsistencies, and then have those changes automaticaly be reflected in my \iTunes Media\Music folder. Is that possible? Otherwise I end up with multiple folders for the same artist.

Check the option to Keep iTunes Media organized under Edit > Preferences > Advanced.  The Copy files to iTunes Media folder option should also be checked if you want to make sure that all media is stored under the iTunes Media folders.

  • Itunes crashes when trying to play videos

My itunes will not play any video (movies, music videos, previews in itunes, etc).  It crashes and shuts down itunes every time i try.  any ideas or help?  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of itunes already.  They will play in quicktime, just not in itunes.  They movies i have in itunes are a mix of digital downloads and movies bought from itunes store.  They worked a few deays ago, and after the new software update, they no longer will.

It didn't work for me. I open itunes 10.7 and try to play Schindler's List HD which is an iTunes digital download I got when I purchased the movie and voila! iTunes crashes harder than a NASCAR driver trying to close the distance. I can't play this movie in VLC, DIVX, Windows Media Player, iTunes, nothing. I also have Bourne Legacy HD with same issues. Can't play movies that are HD. Any help here would be great.

  • ITunes crashes while accessing iTunes Store with a intel video driver

I have a DELL laptop running Windows 8.1 with i7 4500U at 1.8G, 8G ram, 1TB hard disk, NVidia GT750M, iTunes is working fine at downloading or updating apps but crashes while I trying to accessing iTunes Store, no matter I choose run with intel integrated video card or Nvidia video card.
I wonder if this is happened because of Win 8.1 incompatibility or intel video driver, the driver is up to date and if I try an older driver, iTunes won't start at all.
The same thing happens with Adobe Photoshop CC 64bit, it just get freezed but get an error message said intel driver is crashed and auto recovered.
a message is shown if I run iTunes with intel video card by default when i access itunes store, but itunes quit if I try nvidia video card, without any error message.

I'd like to add some more details to my question.
I don't know if this happens at Win8 since I updated to Win 8.1 right after I purchased my laptop, all Win patches are up to date and also iTunes, I am running Win 8.1 64bit Pro version.
I tryed to reinstall iTunes, install quicktime or reinstall quicktime, also tryed to use microsoft kb 2639417, but it does not support win 8.1.

  • Captivate Crashing when editing video demo

I have been having a lot of issues with Captivate crashing when I'm editing video demos. When I try to save, the save progress bar will get to 'thumbnails' and then freeze up. I have to close and restart the project and lose all information that has not been saved. I try to save after every thing just to be sure, but this is still very frustrating.
Does anyone else have issues with this?
The videos I'm working with are about 6 minutes long. I've trimmed a lot of information out in an attempt to make it a shorter video. It seems that after so many 'trims', Captivate doesn't function very well. I'm assuming a work around would be to just make shorter videos, however, if anyone else has an issue such as this I was wondering what your work around was.
    Thanks

  • Converting QuickTime Videos For iPod, iTunes Crashes on Windows

I was trying to convert some Quick Time movies (RvB Seasons 1-3) for my iPod, this is not my first time doing this but this is the first time I am having this problem. One day I open iTunes and try to convert these movies, like 10 seconds later the windows thing comes up and says “iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close” in the technical stuff it gave me it pointed to quicktimeessentials.qtx as the problem. So I searched for this file and deleted it Problem Solved! Or at least I though so when iTunes was able to convert my videos but now no Quick Time video will play right, so then I put the Quick Time file back where it was supposed to be, I can now watch my Quick Time movies but iTunes keeps crashing. hiya!
I can now watch my Quick Time movies but iTunes keeps crashing.
just checking. is it currently crashing with that message when you try to launch itunes, or just when you try to convert those videos?
if it's just when you convert those videos, let's check to see if it's a problem with every file, or just the ones you have at the moment. will itunes crash if you try converting the sample file from this document?
