ITunes crashes/not responding

My iTunes keeps crashing and stops responding. Closing and re-opening the application does not help. Neither does restarting. I reinstalled iTunes - it helped for about 10 minutes and then the same thing started happening again.
thoughts? ideas?
(i think this might have to do with iTunes trying to retrieve album artwork...)
  Windows XP

If your copy of iTunes is crashing, let's get a crash log and send it to those lazy Apple engineers.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
drwtsn32 -i
And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log" If there's already a file there, it most likely has multiple crash logs in it (new crash logs are just appended to the end of the file). So, delete this file. This will make sure you're not sending extra information I don't need. These crash logs are text files, so you can open them in notepad or whatever to see what information you're sending.
You need to send that file to our buddy Roy. Make sure that you include:
(1) the drwtsn32.log file.
(2) the link to this thread.
(3) a one line description of your problem, i.e. "iTunes crashing, might be problem with downloading album art".
(4) the username that you're using here in the discussion boards.
Roy is getting a little swamped with messages and needs to make sure he gets all the information. And if he doesn't get that information, the message is just going to get dropped on the floor.

Thanks so much but none of that helped.  It was driving me crazy because it would back up another external drive.  I just changed the name of the drive from iPhoto/iTunes Library to Media Libraries and IT WORKED!! I guess for some reason it didn't like the drive being called iPhoto or iTunes ???? I don't understand but I have tried so many solutions and exchanging things out but the name change did it????!!!
Thank you for your help and replying to this.  Guess I made my own issue!

    - Try here:
iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows
    - Next try a different computer to help determine if you have a computer or iPod problem.

  • ITunes 8 not responding

When I open iTunes 8 it looks like it starts "Genius - Gathering information about your library" and it starts downloading something. Then it immediately hangs. The task manager says iTunes is not responding. I cannot make windows vista kill the process. When I reboot, Vista hangs on logout (only when iTunes is hung). I have to do a hard power cycle.
I uninstalled and re-installed iTunes 8 but that didn't help. I've tried letting it go overnight to see if iTunes was just busy, but that didn't help.
The impact is that I simply can't use iTunes since it's always hung.
    Any advice?

Well. You bumped your post so I just saw it. You are no longer alone. ; )
Security software can certainly make itunes hinky!
You mentioned itunes went back to the default location, not using G: any more. That can happen if itunes doesn't see G: when it starts. Always make sure your G: drive is operational BEFORE starting itunes.
Better yet, assign it a permanent drive letter of G: in Windows. Windows has a nasty habit of changing drive letters on you depending what you've plugged into USB ports. Your exHD could suddenly become H: and itunes will lose all the music paths.

  • ITunes is not responding after transferring files to iPod Touch

I upgraded iTunes to iTunes 8.2.0.23 last week. I have a first generation iPod Touch (8 GB) running v. 2.2.1. Since upgrading iTunes, after copying new files onto my iPod Touch, both iTunes and the Touch indicate "Syncing in progress" for several minutes after the files have been copied. Eventually, the Touch's screen will stop displaying the syncing message and turn itself off but iTunes stays on "Syncing in progress". I am unable to eject the Touch (although I know I don't have to). In fact iTunes is completely locked up. When I go to the Windows Task Manager, it shows that iTunes is not responding. I end the task there and it closes iTunes. This happens every time I add new files to the Touch.
I've read in various discussion pages about similar problems occuring but they all involve Version 3.0 Touch's or iPhones. Perhaps this is something particular with iTunes 8.2.0.23. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The issue was, I store my music on my Windows Home Server and had my iTunes library connected to it over the network. When I transferred my music locally to my computer, the issue stopped. So, I guess the answer is, don't sync your iTunes library from a Windows Home Server.

  • Mac Pro wont software update and a lot of apps keep freezing/crashing/not responding

Mac Pro wont software update and a lot of apps keep freezing/crashing/not responding Im on OSX Lion and i have a Mac Pro 1.1 please help

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click  Log in.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode. Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • My iTunes on my Mac won't open. The dreaded colored wheel of death keeps spinning but nothing happens. When i hit force quit it shows iTunes as "not responding". Help please.

Help. When i open iTunes the dreaded wheel of doom keeps spinning but itunes wont open or allow me to do anything. When i force quit it shows itunes as "not responding".

You need a firewire cable (6 pin to 4 pin). These are very cheap online if you Google, or you can find at Radio Shack etc.

  • Overdrive Media Console/iPhone Problem Resolved-"iTunes is not responding, bring iTunes to the front and check status.

I could not download books from Overdrive Media Console from my iMac desktop. I realized if I turned off iTunes Match in my iphone, it fixed the problem. On your iphone...Go to "Setting", scroll down to "Music" and turn off iTunes Match. i Tunes match is a music subscription service that I had purchased a few weeks ago. I could not figure out when I tried to download audiobooks from Overdrive I got the following message "iTunes is not responding, bring iTunes to the front and check status". Problem solved. I hope this helps others who are experiencing the same problem!

I'm assuming you are talking about audiobooks and if so, just download all the parts in overdrive media console then locate them in your finder. Go into Itunes and go File > Add new files to Library. Go select all the mp3s and upload them onto your library. Sync your iPhone with it and that is what has worked for me Hope this helps!

  • ITunes becomes 'not responding' within seconds of running

I have installed the latest version of iTunes but it won't run without crashing and becoming 'not responding'.  I can only kill it from Task Manager.  Initially I thought it was due to the Determining Gapless Playback Information sequence failing, so I moved my iTunes database into another folder imagining that rescanning my library and creating a new one would solve the issue.  However when running, iTunes asks to scan my system for music, finds a few tracks then crashes again.
    What can I do?
    PC running Win 7
Music stored on NAS connected to Wifi Router
    iPhone 4S

    An update:
I found an article which suggested running iTunes in 'Safe Mode' to disable plug-ins.  I don't recall installing any plug-ins but I did this nonetheless.  I'm happy to report iTunes ran and got through the Determining Gapless Playback process.
I searched in the places where the article suggested the plug-ins were stored and did not find any files (though I did find the folders).  I have got 'Show hidden folders and files' selected.
What else can I do, other than running iTunes in Safe Mode every time?

  • ITunes 11 not responding constantly

Upgraded to iTunes 11 over the weekend and now everytime I try adding to a playlist or search library, iTunes just crashes with a spinning wheel. I have to force quit iTunes as it says not responding constantly. I restart and it does the same thing over and over. My iTunes is now unusable. Please help?

Same thing is happening on my iMac running 10.8.2, 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5.
I can't even use iTunes very well anymore. It keeps freezing and crashing and I have to restart, and the same thing happens over and over. I'm uber frustrated.
