Itunes crashes on play

I am running iTunes 11.02 on OSX 10.8.2 and whilst it launches fine, wil connect to Itunes match and so on, as soon as i select a track and click Play, I get the beachball and it crashes.
This is similar to a thread on itunes for windows: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4395413?start=0&tstart=0
As al my stuff is on Match and backed up I delete the itunes folder and let match repopulate...same thing...crash.  I have run basic maintenance, using mainemenu pro and tinkertool system.
I am stumped

OK, after more debugging (on a working account) it seems that the culprit is the SRS Labs iWOW plug-in.
Remove the plug-in and iTunes works normally. Will follow-up with SRS.
Would still like to know what files to delete to make it as if iTunes had never been installed on the system though.
Any takers??

  • ITunes crashing while  playing music on external drive

I've just completed the consolidation of several libraries into one (see the discussion of this at (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=583557&tstart=0).
Currently, 1/2 of my library resides on my internal hard drive and the other 1/2 is now sitting on an external hard drive. During the consolidation phase - I selected the option not to make a copy into the iTunes folder.
While consolidating - my iTunes would occassionaly freeze and cause my iMac to lock up, forcing a hard reboot. After restarting - I finally completed the consolidation even with a few more crashes.
Now - when I try to play music that is located on the external hard drive - my system will occasionally locks up.
Is there a problem with libraries residing on external devices? Since I had some crashes during the consolidation - do I need to rebuild permissions or another perform other maintenance steps.
    Thanks any ideas/suggestions

  • ITunes crashed after playing rented movie

I was playing a rented movie in ITunes, when all of a sudden the application crashed.
    I need help on this.

I've rented the movie twice now, and I uninstalled the current Itunes and installed an older version and it still crashed.

  • Itunes crashes with audio CDs

Recently, I've had very frequent problems with iTunes crashing when playing commercial audio CDs. The crash usually happens at one of the following times
    - When a CD is inserted (if it's a new CD, the crash happens after iTunes has retrieved data from CDDB, but before the CD appears in iTunes).
    - When starting to play a CD.
    - When a CD has finished playing.
    - When ejecting a CD.
Sometimes it also crashes in the middle of playing a CD, but the crash usually happens at one of the points listed above.
The crashes started about a month ago, after I updated to iTunes 8.2. I tried reverting to iTunes 8.1.1, but that didn't stop the crashes.
Here's what I've tried so far:
    - reinstalled iTunes (tried both 8.1.1 and 8.2)
    - deleted preferences
    - rebuilt library
    - repaired permissions
    - used DiskWarrior to rebuild directory
    - re-installed OS X (archive and install)
But it's still crashing after all of that. It doesn't crash when playing mp3 or AAC files from my iTunes library, but it's crashing almost half the time I try to play a CD.
Any ideas of what might be going wrong or what else I might try?
Looking in the console log, the crash generally seems to be either a segmentation fault or a bus error.
Here's what I think are the relevant portions of some of the iTuunes crash logs:

More crashes... One other time it crashes that I didn't mention above is when I insert an audio CD that I haven't played before. iTunes queries CDDB and then crashes pretty consistently. That and when a CD finishes playing are probably the most common, though it sometimes crashes in the middle of playing a CD (often when I've just done something else, such as editing information for some tracks in my library).
Not that anyone seems to be paying attention to this thread, but here's some more crash log excerpts. I'm noticing that most of my crashes are happening on thread 0 at 0x00003bd5 0x1000 + 11221, though there are a few on other threads (though thread 0 also seems to be at 0x00003bd5 0x1000 + 11221, even though it's not the thread that crashed)
The most common error I'm getting is a segmentation fault:

  • Help needed: How can I import a large audio collection with many playlists? iTunes crashes because so many playlists try to load and play at once.

I've got a problem that I can't seem to figure out after reading scads of articles and posts. I'd be grateful for any help or ideas you can provide. Here's what's going on.
I have a folder of GraphicAudio audio books. It contains roughly 500 subfolders, one for each book. In each folder are the mp3 files for the book and an m3u file that was supplied with the books at the time of purchase. None of this content is currently in my iTunes library.
When I try to add this folder to my iTunes library, iTunes starts trying to play each playlist it encounters. It crashes after around 30 seconds. I suspect this is because it tries to switch and play playlists so rapidly.
I don't actually want iTunes to start playing each playlist it finds. I just want to import my files. Once they're imported, I can select them and send individual books to my iPod Touch.
Do any of you know of a work-around for this? I'm dreading the thought of having to import each subfolder one by one. I keep thinking that if I could just prevent iTunes from automatically trying to play the playlists, it would import the mp3s and playlist info without a problem. If there's no way to do this in iTunes, might there be a third party app that can manage it somehow?
For reference, I'm using the latest version of 64 bit iTunes under 64 bit Windows 7.
Thanks for taking the time to help me.

I've written a script called DeDuper which can help remove unwanted duplicates. See this  thread for background.
That said you should probably start by "undoing" the creation of extra mp3s. If you sort the song list on the Date Added column you can select then first song from the relevant batch, then scroll to the end of the group, hold shift and click to select the range. You can then delete and send to the recycle bin.
My script won't be as effective against this group. The "Convert to format" tool may well specifiy a different bit rate from the source file, but it won't ever increase the quality of the audio. Clearly converting 128k mp3 to 256k mp3 would have no benefit so you want the original files.
If you still have duplicates use the script to thin out what remains.

  • Itunes 11.1.5.5 crashes when playing a Music Video

Itunes 11.1.5.5 crashes when trying to play back one specific video that was purchased through ITunes. It played once just fine. Now it crashes Itunes with every attempt at playback. Other previously purchased music videos play just fine. Any suggestions? Even a backup copy has the same effect.
As a side note: With the same video on a 4th Generation Ipod Touch, The slider can be seen counting through the video, but there is no audio and only a dark screen. Yet, other purchased videos play just fine. Also, the crash occured on the previous version of Itunes.
Itunes 11.1.5.5 Running on Windows 8.1 with the current version of Apple's video player software (that I can't remember the name of although I have just updated it and Itunes).

Apple support seems to know nothing about why iTunes 11.1.5 has this problem.
Anybody know how to roll back to 11.1.4? The problem didn't exist there.

  • ITunes crashes on attempt to play media with foreign characters

Recently, over the last few versions I have been unable to play any of my media that includes foreign characters, be it Asian characters or accented Roman characters. The fact of the matter is that upon attempting to play a song / audiobook / movie with a foreign character iTunes crashes.
I am using iTunes 10.6.1.7 on Windows 7 64-bit in English (UK) with non-unicode set to Japanese.

The media with foreign characters syncs with my iPhone okay, and will play without issue on it; just iTunes is unable to play said media on my computer, which is highly frustrating.
I would be appreciative if someone has found and would share any work-around to this problem. Thanks.

I still have no thorough concept on how I have solved this but I suppose if anyone else has encountered this issue I can share how I worked around it:
I changed my windows system non-unicode locale back to its default (English UK).
I then installed Microsoft AppLocale to handle the programs that would be affected.
For experimental reasons I then set my iTunes executable to have Japanese locale through the AppLocale program.
It now operates fine and will play files with foreign characters.
Try it if you experience the problem's I've been having.

  • Itunes crashes when i try to play a tv show

Yesterday I set up my nice brand new macbook pro, imported my programs and itunes library from my old Mac and everything went fairly smoothly (had to re-register Photoshop and Illustrator and redownload paralells)
The main problem has been itunes which I was prompted to upgrade and did.
First I had issues with the new library not synching to the apple tv but managed to fix that (though it seems to want to sync all over again over and over)
By far the worst problem is that when I click on a tv show (purchased from itunes) any tv show or movie - itunes crashes. Music and podcasts play just fine.
I have authorized this computer and it is an issues with previously purchases tv shows as well as two I just purchased to day.

    Hi, potatoqueen!
I have a couple of articles here to help you through the steps of troubleshooting for this issue. The first will help you troubleshoot the iTunes crash, and can be found here:

  • ITunes crashes when I play certain songs

After having upgraded to the latest firmware (OS 4.3.1) iTunes crashes when I try to play and sync some of my songs in my album that previously played and synced fine. The songs are encoded as .m4a at 256kbit, 44.1 kHz and are playing fine in for example Windows Media Player...
So why suddenly not in iTunes? And what can I do about this?

  • Songs play for 2 seconds, then iTunes crashes

After updating to 7.7, iTunes suddenly doesn't like any of the songs in my music library. I can play a song for only two seconds before iTunes crashes. I CAN play song samples from the ITunes store just fine. Any ideas?

Since downloading the video from iTunes Music store my songs downloaded from Nusic Store will no longer play either. It prompts my to enter my password (which I have checked and changed) but they still will not play

  • Itunes crashes when trying to play videos

My itunes will not play any video (movies, music videos, previews in itunes, etc).  It crashes and shuts down itunes every time i try.  any ideas or help?  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest version of itunes already.  They will play in quicktime, just not in itunes.  They movies i have in itunes are a mix of digital downloads and movies bought from itunes store.  They worked a few deays ago, and after the new software update, they no longer will.

It didn't work for me. I open itunes 10.7 and try to play Schindler's List HD which is an iTunes digital download I got when I purchased the movie and voila! iTunes crashes harder than a NASCAR driver trying to close the distance. I can't play this movie in VLC, DIVX, Windows Media Player, iTunes, nothing. I also have Bourne Legacy HD with same issues. Can't play movies that are HD. Any help here would be great.

  • ITunes crashes when I try to play a song

I downloaded the new version of iTunes last night. Now (like a lot of people here), my iTunes doesn't work right. The iTunes store loads OK, and I can still download music. But whenever I try to play a song iTunes crashes, and I get the Microsoft box that pops up and says that an "unexpected error" has occurred, and iTunes must close, then asks if I want to send a report or not. This also happens when I try to preview a song before buying. I have already uninstalled and reinstalled Quicktime, but that did not correct anything. Any ideas?

I've seen this happen with iTunes Third party add-ons/plug-ins being installed. Do you have any of those?
    Try this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=300063
I want to check on some other issues, also, that have to do with iTunes library files or preference files. This next fun experiment is going to be more of a diagnostic procedure aimed at working out if they may be involved at all.
Go over into your User accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. While you're in that control panel, switch off "Fast Switch", or whatever its called, in your logging-in preferences.
Now go log out of the old account and log into you new account.
Open up iTunes. You'll see a blank library screen in the new account. Import over some songs into the library in that new user account. (If possible, use the ones that you know will crash itunes in the other account.)
Does you iTunes crash in the new account when songs are played?

  • ITunes crashes when songs are played.

I've been without iTunes on my work computer for some time, and I miss it dearly. I tried again, hoping maybe a new version was out that would fix the problem. Anyway, here's what's going on and what I've done so far.
When I start iTunes it opens normally and I can move around playlists and such easily. When I go to play music, it plays for maybe ten seconds before coming up with the 'iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close' message and crashes the program. Looking through the threads the most common solutions have not helped.
    - There's no Norton or other software firewall program running.
    - I've installed the standalone version of Quicktime.
    - I can run quicktime by itself just fine.
    - I've done MSCONFIG and unselected everything except the two for iTunes.
Any other ideas on what could be wrong?

gaaaah. i've seen that before once or twice with a pref files problem. (for some reason, itunes can't generate one or the other of them, which can produce similar symptoms to having a damaged preferences file.)
okay, let's try enlisting some additional technical help.
we'll get a crash log from itunes, and send it to so someone who can interpret crash logs.
Typically, you'll need to configure Dr. Watson on your PC in order to generate crash logs. Windows start menu -> Run. Type in "cmd". Hit return. At the prompt in the command line window that comes up, type in
    drwtsn32 -i
    And hit return.
This will create crash logs in Documents And Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson\. There'll usually be a file in here called "drwtsn32.log"
prior to collecting the itunes crash log, delete any existing crash logs in there. (we want to make sure we send the correct crash log.)
generate the crash, collect the crash log, and send it to this email address
    in the email:
    (1) state the precise version number of itunes that you're using. (go into your "Help > About iTunes" to doublecheck.)
    (2) include the URL to this thread so that the person who gets the email has some context, but also give as much information about the context of the crashing as you can.
