ITunes crashes when iPod connected

After four years I finally have my first error message of any kind with my Mac.  The other day I plugged in my iPod touch after iTunes was already open and an error message popped up saying iTunes would be forced to close.  I can use iTunes w/out any issue but as soon as I plug in my iPod, it crashes every time.  Anyone have any fixes?

OK I FIXED IT!! my ipod is all set to manual except for the games. Both my games became unplayable the other day for some reason (texas holdem and tetris). i went into my ipod through my computer and went into the ipod_control folder. i deleted the games. now it works fine.

  • ITunes crashes when I connect my iPod to the PC when iTunes is running....

I have written about this problem before, but there have not been any successful solutions as of this date. I will explain my situation a little further and maybe someone can help.
Most of the time, when I connect my iPod to my pc while iTunes is running, the instance the iPod shows up on the library site, and whenever I move the cursor, iTunes crashes, so I have to close iTunes right away and try to disconnect my iPod. Most of the time, a message comes up that says info is being transferred to the ipod and that I shouldn't disconnet it at that time, but I usually go ahead because I know it isn't transferring at that time, since itunes has crashed.
Sometimes, after I have clicked on the first message to go ahead and disconnect my ipod, another messages comes up that says something to the effect of, "You can't disconnect because it is being used by another server at this time." So I click "OK" and then iTunes stays on for a few moments which gives me time to transfer a song or two, but then itunes crashes as soon as it finished transferring or before it finishes.
As anyone can imagine, this has really become a hugh problem. Having an iPod and not being able to use iTunes makes it very unhandy. I'm not able to add any new music or any of the playlists which i have been working on. Does anyone have a solution, or any suggestions as to what may be going on? It would be deeply appreciated.
I plan to restore my iPod in a day or two if I don't get a solution to this, but I don't have all of the music, videos, etc. that I have on the iPod since I removed much of it from iTunes to help the computer run faster. I had over 2000 items in the library, so it was pulling the pc down and it was taking forever to use the computer.
I am unable to use any of the software to transfer everything from my iPod to the iTunes library because of the problem with iTunes crashing when I connect the iPod, so this isn't a solution at this time.
    Someone, please help!

I suspect a hardware problem.  But do the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset.  Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup via iTunes
    - Resore the iPid to factoery defaults/new iPod.
In the latter part of you post, I thin you ar sayng that you do not have a syning computer and the music is not on the computer. If so, do the following so you will not lose anthing (or very little) when you restore.
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Best iPod to PC
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and right click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Backup. This will make a backup so you can restore to the backup

  • After iOS 4 update on iPod Touch, iTunes crashes when iPod is connected.

I just updated my iPod from 3.1.3 to iOS 4, and after all of that, when I plug in my iPod Touch 2G [version 4.0 (8A293)] to my laptop, iTunes crashes. A window pops up saying "iTunes has stopped working," and then iTunes closes automatically. When I do not already have iTunes open and I connect my iPod, iTunes will open and then close a few seconds later with the same pop up box.
I tried seeing if it was a syncing or connecting issue, so I turned off automatic syncing and the problem still exists. Therefore, I think it is a connection issue.
*Note: When I was updating to iOS 4, I left and came back to my computer with it running on idle. Could that have had an effect? If so, how can I just redo everything?
**Another note that may be helpful is that while I do still have all of my music and videos in iTunes (which works totally fine with no iPod attached), the videos and music is NOT on my iPod. But, my apps all work fine on my iPod.
I would really appreciate any sort of help I could get for this problem. I was really looking forward to the OS update, but now I am disappointed because of this major problem.
    THANK YOU for your help!

I would try moving the existing iPod backup file to a safe locations and let iTunes make a whole new one.  The location of of the backup file is:
iTunes places the backup files in the following places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\(username)\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
    Windows Vista and Windows 7: \Users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup\
Note: If you do not see the AppData or Application Data folders, you may need to show hidden files (Windows XP,  Windows Vista and Windows 7), or iTunes may not be installed in the default location. Show hidden files and then search the hard drive for the Backup directory.

  • ITunes crashing when iPod is connected

iTunes has been crashing on my computer for the past few weeks some (not all) of the time when I connect my iPod for updating and recharging. The program doesn't quit all the time, as I stated, and it never immediately repeats itself when I relaunch the program and continue the update process. Also, the problem started before I updated to 7.2. I've done nothing else to iTunes other than the usual additions of a few songs and podcasts or fiddling with the equalizers of certain songs. And there's been no noticeable effect to the quality of my recordings, nor do any of them seem to be missing. Any ideas?

  • ITunes crashes when iPod is connected

Hello, I just got the 5th gen iPod and everytime I connect it to my powerbook g4 (10.4.3) itunes INSTANTLY crashes, as well as when trying to play a video itunes instantly crashes (this has been going on on and off since the video update) I am using itunes 6.1 and I've tried reinstalling it and I've restored the iPod? any advice?

I have the same prob here.
Mac Mini with OS X 10.4.3
    iTunes: 6.0.1 (3)
    QuickTime: 7.0.3
iPod Updater: either 2005-10-12 or the latest one 2005-11-xx
    iPod Video
    1. QuickTime can play .mov correctly
    2. problem: everytime i connect to my iPod Video to Mac mini, iTunes crashes immediately. After that, I tried to reinstall everything (including iTunes, iPod Updater) after cleaning everything related in the system (but iTunesHelper couldn't be removed until I restarted the OS) but in vain.
    3. iPod Video can sync with iTunes 6.0.1 (with updater 2005-10-12) correctly. Just cannot talk to my Mac Mini!
    Please help, thanks!

  • Itunes crashes when iPod is connected and doesn't recognize it (iPod touch)

Help! Whenever I plug my iPod in my iTunes freezes! Both my iPod and iTunes work perfectly fine it's just when my iPods connected. It also doesn't recognize it but it appears on my computer. It was fine before and this problem only occurred very recently. I have the newest iTunes. Any ideas on what I could do? Thanks for your help

My problem still isnt solved however I have got further. This has taken me many hours but by searching for ages, i tried the msconfig idea on itunes. After following the instructions, i found that it stopped my itunes from crashing. I then found the root of the problem - it was the Apple Mobile Device which was interfering and crashing my itunes. So i deleted it and yes my itunes was not crashing however I need it to sync my ipod..hmm.. so if I reinstall it, it crashes my itunes and if I dont, I still cannot sync my ipod.
Im not too sure what to do now however I feel a sense of achievement for getting somewhere.. Thanks for your help again X

  • ITunes crashes when I connect my iPod to it...

For the past 2-3 days, everytime I connect my iPod to iTunes, iTunes crashes. I have to go to "Task Manager" to disconnect the site and then come back on and quickly disconnect my iPod.
This has gotten to be a really big problem, because I'm not able to transfer music, and I'm afraid it is going to damage my iPod. It may have already been damaged about a week ago when iTunes was crashing everytime I pulled it up. I got that solved only to have this latest problem start.
Has anyone else had this problem with connecting their iPod to iTunes only to have it (iTunes) crash? If so, how did you solve it?
Thanks for any help I can get.

We did upgrade the Norton Anti-Virus to the 2006 software, but only after the problem started, and I also used the 2006 upgraded for my iPod, which I downloaded from the Apple's website.
I have tried a new USB cord and port, and I even took my iPod out of the docking stand, just in case it was bad, but none of this worked.
I have installed software called "Mediashop TunesPlus" to help transfer music from my iPod to the iTunes Library, but, when it didnt' work on my computer, even though the package said it would work with the iPod and was compatible with iTunes. I removed it when I started having so much trouble with the iTunes crashing.
Will any of this affect iTunes? If so, what should I do?

  • My iTunes crashes when I connect my iPod classic.

I tried reseting my computer, reseting my iPod and even connecting my iPod to another computer. Even in another computer when I connect it, iTunes freezes.
    Is my iPod dead?
I can still listen to the playlist in it. It's still working, in it's own way.
I can't even restore my iPod because of the iTunes freezing.
    Please help me

    Hello Elif B.,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The following article provides troubleshooting steps for the issue you described. Because you mentioned the issue persists on another computer, you may want to refer to that section:
iTunes: May become unresponsive when connecting iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3219
If the issue also occurs on a different computer:
You may need to restore your device to factory settings.
    - If your device has an internet connection, you may use email to send yourself your pictures, notes, and other data you may need to back up before you restore.
    - If you have backed up your device in the past, and you wish to keep this backup, make a copy of your backup on your computer. See this article for details on where backups are stored.
    - Follow this article to restore your device. When the restore is finished, restore from your latest backup.
    - If the issue returns, follow steps this article again, but restore your device "As new" when prompted.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • ITunes crashes when I connect my iPod

I am having problems syncing my iPod. iTunes recognises my iPod for about 15 seconds then comes up with the following error message...iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
It then asks if I want to send an error report. Once sent iTunes closes and my iPod is not synched. I have attempted to Restore the iPod, got part way through the restore, then iTunes crashed again.
Yes I have downloaded the latest iTunes 7.2 update. And have reinstalled the ipod.exe setup.
At present I have iTunes with all my music, and an iPod with nothing on it, that iTunes won't let me sync.
    Please help!

by any chance, do you have a version of the mplugin itunes plugin installed on the PC? (i've seen that produce that message under these circumstances before.)

  • ITunes crashing when iPod is plugged in, works when iPod is disconnected

Like the title says, iTunes 8 is crashing for me when my iPod is plugged in, but it's working fine when the iPod isn't plugged in.
Earlier today, I upgraded to iTunes 8 and also downloaded the iPod touch update (2.1). I didn't have time for it to install though because I was going to be late for class, so I left the iPod connected, shut the laptop and brought it with me to class. I opened it up when I got there, to see if the installation process would continue, but it didn't... so I did a force quit.
My iPod still works fine, but my iTunes doesn't. I don't know if it was because I did the force quit that made iTunes sucky, but either way, I've tried a bunch of things to fix it.
    1. Reinstall
    2. Disable Last.fm plugin (crash report window said that it could be causing it the crashing)
    3. Reboot into safe mode and reinstall
and there's probably more things I did to try to fix the problem but they didn't work.
    Sooo...
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks much!

I have the same problem: if I load iTunes for a second time and my iPod is plugged in the iTunes app and the system menus (top right corner of screen) freeze up.
Unplugging and plugging in the iPod seems un-freeze everything for me.

The best thing I've found is to close itunes first and then disconnect your iphone. This seems to work for me with both version 7.3 and 7.3.1. Hope this helps.

  • ITunes freezes when iPod connected

I have Windows XP and iTunes version 11.0.1. Since I've updated iTunes I haven't tried to sync my iPod touch 4th generation. When I connected my iPod my iTunes freezes and I can't click on anything. Once I disconnect the iPod then iTunes works fine. What should I do? Thanks.

I've had similiar problems when it comes to freezing. What I did was simply wait. I loaded my iPod and the mouse pointer showed the hourglass for a few minutes, then the iPod simply showed up on iTunes. Try rebooting your system, connecting iPod, and giving it a few minutes.

  • ITunes crashes when iPod starts to sync

Have tried connecting ipod using Firewire and USB, rebooting ipod and reinstalling iTunes to no avail. iTunes says it's starting to update ipod then a norton internet security dialogue appears saying a windows subsystem is attempting to connect, it is at this point itunes crashes. Any suggestions for a permanent solution aside from a format?

  • ITunes crashes when I connect my iPhone 4S

This is a case of one laptop being confused with two different iPhones.
I had no problem using iTunes with my iPhone 4S on my Win7 laptop.
The other day, I had connected my wife's iPhone to my laptop to transfer some files.
It didn't work, so I gave it back to my wife. Now, I connect my iPhone and iTunes crashes.
It opens up and start to quickly scan the library music files and come to a freeze. All these happens in less than 3 seconds.
An error message comes up saying it will shut itself.
I have visited a local Apple store and they suggest me to uninstall iTunes and other apple applications, but no luck.
They then had no clue how to fix this.
It appears that somewhere in the laptop (win7, hard drive, some system folders, etc...)
it perpetually holds some sort of iPhone or iTunes links or vestiage. This is why it comes up even after uninstalling the iTunes.
I don't want to format the hard drive just for this.
Anyone had this problem or somthing similar??
if so, could you help me?
I don't want to format the hard drive just because this.
    I'm so frustrated.
    Thank you.
