ITunes Crashes When Syncing iPhone or iPod

I am running iTunes 8.0.2 and I am having problems syncing both my iPhone and iPod to my Mac via iTunes. When I connect either device and start the sync process iTunes will crash to the desktop and then ask me if I would like to relaunch it. There are no error codes of any kind but it does give me the option to report the incident to Apple (which I have done twice now). I've tried restarting the Mac, I've tried rebooting both the iPhone and the iPod but every time I connect either one and initiate sync, iTunes crashes to the desktop. I am not experiencing any other anomalies in iTunes and everything seems to work fine between iTunes and my Apple TV including syncing. Anyone else seeing this behavior - it just started today out of the blue. Is there a way I can reset iTunes without losing my music library? Also, when I synced the iPhone to iTunes and it crashed I discovered later that iTunes has lost two of my paid applications out of iTunes and deleted them off the phone as well. As best as I can tell they are gone. What the heck is going on here?

This is probably the same issue as this:

Itunes 8.0.2 crashes during sync to iPhone or iPod with the EXCBADACCESS exception. The problem does not affect Apple TV syncing.
No word from apple yet, but it seems to be a widespread problem.

  • ITunes crashes when syncing iPhone 4

Im on windows 7, have itunes 10.5.3.3 version and now im trying to sync my iphone 4 to get my music and everything else, but everytime I try to sync my phone, itunes crashes. I didn't have this problem before, but after I upgraded it won't let me sync. I have tried removing the .plist files, uninstalling itunes completely and reinstalling, but I keep on getting the same error. I will really appreciate any help.
    Thanks in advance

Just started crashing on me too! I just updated an iPhone 3Gs that I was converting to an iPod, since I now use a 4s. iTunes crashed during the phone reboot phase during the final stage of the software/hardware update. Now, I can launch iTunes, but as soon as I click on the iPhone icon, iTunes immediately crashes. It initially opened a "send crash report to Apple" dialog, but now it doesn't. I tried the same thing with my 4s and it crashes immediately as well. I have deleted all iTunes prefs with no improvement. I have the latest version of iTunes (just updated it a couple of days ago).  I see several "iTunes crashes on sync" threads on these forums, but none with many responses and I've found no solutions so far. What a pain.

    Can anyone help?

I ran Repair Permissions on my MBP hard drive and this corrected the problem.  My iPhone now syncs perfectly with iTunes. I was about to, at the suggestion of Apple Support, remove iTunes and reinstall the program.  But I thought I would try the old "standby" Apple cure (Repair Permissions) first.  And it worked!! Hope this helps others with similar problems.
And, oh, BTW, if your iPhone 3GS battery dies, try charging it up with the AC adapter firstI think this whole problem started when I plugged in my dead iPhone into my MBP with iTunes running and iTunes, and/or the Mac didn't like it.  FYI.

  • ITunes crashes when syncing iPhone

    Hello anyone who can help
I have been trying to sync my 3G iphone to itunes on my Macbook and everytime it tries to sync music or photos iTunes crashes. I have managed to get my calender and contacts across fine as well as apps. Anyone have any solutions or have you had this problem?
I am running the most current updates of all software (Mac OS 10.5.4. and iTunes 7.7.1). It's also doing this on my iMac...
    Please help!
    Carla

I am having similar problems except that my iphone is also crashed. I have reset it and all I get is the grey apple of death. I can't restore the phone because it crashes iTunes when I plug it in. If I restart ITunes, it hangs. I tried restarting the computer (iMac and the phone).
I am also using os x 10.5.4 and itunes 7.7.1.
Looks like I have a brick for a phone. Guess I will take it to the apple store.

  • ITunes crashes when sync'ng my iPods

    Hello All,
I'm recently experiencing problems when I ask iTunes to sync with my ipods. It starts transfering music when suddenly a message saying iTunes stopped working and will be closed followed by a message stating that Windows is looking for a resolution an will inform when it is available.
I suspect that a recent registry cleaning process may be the root cause for this, however the problem persists even after I hve reinstalled iTunes 10.1 from sctrach.
    Any Help?

There's a bug with 10.1.0.54 that is causing "iTunes has stopped working messages" (citing CoreAudioToolbox.dll in the Problem Reports for the error) for some folks when importing CDs with the AAC encoding, adding/converting files to AAC, and in some cases syncing devices.
Short of rolling back your iTunes to 10.0.1.22 and your Apple Application Support to 1.3.2 (CoreAudioToolbox.dll is kept in the Apple Application Support program files), there's a few possible workarounds.
    (1) Change your importing prefs to use a different encoding (won't help with the device syncing variation though), and/or don't use the option to convert to 128 kbps AAC when syncing.
    (2) Replace your CoreAudioToolbox.dll version 7.9.4.0 with a 7.9.3.0 as per:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12576816#12576816
    (3) Or, replace your CoreAudioToolbox.dll version 7.9.4.0 with a shadow copy of a 7.9.3.0 as per:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12583499&#12583499
(2 and 3 do help with the device-syncing variation.)

  • Itunes crashing when syncing iphone 4s

Initially sync went o.k a few days ago, put some songs and apps on it, have been using for a few days and decided to synch the rest of my music library.
now when connecting my iphone 4s to my pc and starting up itunes, the auto-synch hangs on step 2 "backing up device", trying to cancel, eject the iphone or alter the synch settings causes itunes to crash and lockup completely, no changes to anything since i initially synched it with my pc ( and the phone itself has worked flawlessly since).
attempting to backup only and the device gets the bar to about 50% before the same happens, itunes locks up completely, the phone still has the spinning synch icon.

I can now state that i have fixed the issue!
What i did was a complete reboot of EVERYTHING :
    1) Uninstalled iTunes
    2) Reset iphone via the iphone settings menu
    3) Deleted ALL backup/caches of the iphone settings manually by navigating the apple folder in C Documents.(location varies depending on your OS but if you're having problems backing up, this seems to be a common cause of problems)
    4) Reinstalled latest version of iTunes, reset phone and updated to 4.01
now works without a hitch, i can only assume that it hiccuped once during synch and then became "stuck" from that point onwards

  • ITunes crashes when I connect my iPod to the PC when iTunes is running....

I have written about this problem before, but there have not been any successful solutions as of this date. I will explain my situation a little further and maybe someone can help.
Most of the time, when I connect my iPod to my pc while iTunes is running, the instance the iPod shows up on the library site, and whenever I move the cursor, iTunes crashes, so I have to close iTunes right away and try to disconnect my iPod. Most of the time, a message comes up that says info is being transferred to the ipod and that I shouldn't disconnet it at that time, but I usually go ahead because I know it isn't transferring at that time, since itunes has crashed.
Sometimes, after I have clicked on the first message to go ahead and disconnect my ipod, another messages comes up that says something to the effect of, "You can't disconnect because it is being used by another server at this time." So I click "OK" and then iTunes stays on for a few moments which gives me time to transfer a song or two, but then itunes crashes as soon as it finished transferring or before it finishes.
As anyone can imagine, this has really become a hugh problem. Having an iPod and not being able to use iTunes makes it very unhandy. I'm not able to add any new music or any of the playlists which i have been working on. Does anyone have a solution, or any suggestions as to what may be going on? It would be deeply appreciated.
I plan to restore my iPod in a day or two if I don't get a solution to this, but I don't have all of the music, videos, etc. that I have on the iPod since I removed much of it from iTunes to help the computer run faster. I had over 2000 items in the library, so it was pulling the pc down and it was taking forever to use the computer.
I am unable to use any of the software to transfer everything from my iPod to the iTunes library because of the problem with iTunes crashing when I connect the iPod, so this isn't a solution at this time.
    Someone, please help!
HP   Windows XP   Using DSL for internet access

I suspect a hardware problem.  But do the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset.  Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore the iPod from backup via iTunes
    - Resore the iPid to factoery defaults/new iPod.
In the latter part of you post, I thin you ar sayng that you do not have a syning computer and the music is not on the computer. If so, do the following so you will not lose anthing (or very little) when you restore.
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other music by using a third-party program like one of those discussed here:
    Best iPod to PC
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and right click on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Backup. This will make a backup so you can restore to the backup

  • Itunes crashes when syncing Ipad with mp4 movies in photo folder for keynotes

I'm trying to upload a small MP4 video onto my Ipad to use in Keynotes. I place the video in the photo folder and select sync, then tunes crashes.
I had created the video in Corel Video Studio pro 3 and created MP4 file. Copied to the IPAD and had it all working. I then made changes to the video and reconverted and now Itunes crashes when syncing.

    Please help urgent

I had the same problem, and it turns out that the problem is having the same file into different folders. For example I had an MP4 in iTunes, and the same file in the photos folder that was being updated to the iPad. So I just removed one file and it syncs perfectly.

  • ITunes on PC does not crash when syncing IPhones but crashes halfway through IPad sync

Itunes and Ipad on latest software iterations.
When syncing IPhones all perform faultlessly. When I try to sync. my IPad ITunes crashes halfway through the process.
For the last two weeks I have not been able to remove downloaded TV programmes via ITunes and have had to perform the removal via
<Settings>General>Usage>Manage storage. One audiobook is not visible on ITunes and cannot be deleted by any method I have tried.
I am storing all media on a WDCloud drive as I have over 1.3 TBytes of films, TV Programmes and audiobooks.
I have tried repairing both ITunes and Quicktime to no avail.
    IOS8.1.2
    Itunes

    Hi Brendan
    Thanks for the reply.
I noticed that the sync crashed at the point where it was downloading either Apps or Video (TV Progs). I tried a 'delete all media' reset yesterday. Problem still present and then I had no media or Apps other than some of the Apps as supplied on initial startup.
Today I tried a different USB to Lightning lead and at one point I thought it was working with Wi-Fi sync but whilst it didn't crash, the Icons of the Apps that were present on the IPad before the problem occurred are in the same place as before but greyed out and the Apps obviously have not been loaded.
Funnily enough I did a factory re-set just before you sent this so will post again if this works to help others. I believe this is going to be an IOS 8 problem like so many other IOS 8 problems I have found.
    Best wishes
    Adrian

  • Itunes crashes when syncing contacts

My itunes crashes when it tries to sync contacts with Outlook. I cannot even select the Contacts tab to changes the settings. When I click the Contacts tab, itunes crashes. Has anyone experienced this problem?
    Message was edited by: MR.W

Ok... was able to disable sync of contacts as follows:
1 - Make sure Outlook is closed.
    2 - Open up iTunes
    3 - Stop sync
4 - Go to contacts tab under your ipod
5 - Allow it to try and start outlook, will give you an error about how it is not logged on. (have to time it well, or it might crash again)
6 - Uncheck sync contacts and hit apply. I let it remove all contacts.
Now I do not have to sync contacts (which is fine for my ipod classic... not sure if this affects iPhone users as well).

  • Crash when syncing iphone

Itunes used to work fine, but now crashes everytime I plug my iphone in.  It gets partway through the sync, then quits with no error message.  If I stop the syncying, itunes is fine.  If i then select my iphone in the lefthand column, iTunes crashes.
My iphone is set to wirelessly sync, but how the #%$& am I supposed to affect any change if itunes won't allow me to change any syncing settings.
Really, if it is wireless, it needs to be configured from the phone, not itunes...

Do you have any better luck with that if you update to iTunes 10.6.1.7?
From the notes for the release:
iTunes 10.6.1 provides a number of improvements, including:
    • Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view and syncing photos to devices.
    • Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
    • Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
    • Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

  • ITunes 11 crashes when syncing iPhone

I just installed iTunes 11 and it crashes every time I try to sync my iPhone 4S.  As soon as it tries to update an app on the iPhone it crashes.  Any ideas?

Try restarting your Mac and your iPhone.
If that doesn't do it, try to narrow it down a little.
What is syncing to the iPhone when iTunes crashes?
Do you see the problem when you deselect some of syncing options, or just deselect the one that is shown at the top of iTunes when you sync?
If it's a podcast, video or audio track, did you get it from the iTunes Store?
