ITunes crashing after Time Machine backup restored?

Hi there, I recently restored my system using Time Machine and after I did this my iTunes started crashing, I've re-installed it and this hasn't helped and I also tried using the Disk Utility to repair my volume but this hasn't worked either.

OK, the upgrade to 10.6.4 is what worked for me, because I was on 10.6.3:
--Run software update, which should tell you you need to upgrade to 10.6.4.
--Do not choose everything and update all at once, that crashed my kernel. I suggest you just update the system itself.
--iTunes should open and your library should be fine (mine asked to locate the library).
--After this, go back and do the Java and other necessary software updates. I avoided the Safari update because I have seen many posts about Safari system updates causing weird flukey things.
One additional complication was that I was restoring from Time Machine after a transfer from old MBP to new MBP via Migration Assistant. That could have been responsible for the kernel panic. I was required to use the shipping disk to reinstall the system and do disk repair before I could upgrade to 10.6.4.

  • Can't sync applications after Time machine backup restoration

    Hello.
I'm running 10.5.4 on a Macbook whose hard drive crashed. I replaced it with another one and restored from my closest time machine backup. Everything is OK with the files, the problem was when I tried to sync my ipod touch.
The ipod is running 2.0.2. It contained 9 applications, but after the first try to sync I got the error message that several applications couldn't be synced. For each of them I had a message like "Application blah blah could not be synced because you lack the permissions to do so".
More importantly, the iPod touch now doesn't contain any of these applications, even though they still get reported as a problem during syncing. Rather than deleted, they seem to be hidding, though I can't access any from the touch.
How can I recover my applications being synced without losing their data?

I have used iTunes to reset the iPod to the factory default settings. After the syncronisation and reuploading of all my music and photos, I still get the same error on application syncing: I have no permissions to sync applications.
I have tried downloading new free applications from the App store, but it is the same, nothing gets synced, the new applications are added to the list of problematic programs that can't be synced.
    Here's a snapshot of the error: http://gradha.sdf-eu.org/appsyncerror.png

  • New Install Works Fine then System  Crashes After Time Machine Backup

I have installed Snow Leopard and everything went fine. I setup my external drive as the backup drive for Time Machine and did a backup. Then when I next used it, various applications started crashing. Then the System began crashing and gave me the gray screen restart and would never load again.
I got out the Snow Leopard disk and used DIsk Utilities to repair the disk and permissions, which seemed to work well. The computer worked great for a while. Then after I used Time Machine to back it up, when I next used it the System began crashing again.
What is going on here? It seems to be too much of a coincidence that the problems started immediately after I performed my first Time Machine backup to an external drive.

    Woodwyn wrote:
Actually I already did that more or less. I re-installed the Snow Leopard printer drivers from the DVD after I previously repaired my system using DIsk Utilities. After which, I was prompted to download and install the 10.6.2 Combo update again. Which I did. After which, I ran disk utility and repaired and permissions verified the disk. But if you think going back to the original 6.0 install is important, then I presume you also mean I need to run all the subsequent updates as well?
So you only re-insalled printer drivers and updated the existing OS to 10.6.2? Then that may be enough. Otherwise, if the issue returns, I would suggest a full re-install of the OS at 10.6.0 followed by updates to 10.6.2.
However, first I am going to repair the drive and NOT enable Time Machine or perform a back-up, to see how long it lasts without crashing. The last two times, the crashing began within an hour of finishing the install and repairing the disk (immediately following a "co-incidental" Time Machine backup both times, of course). It's entirely possible Time Machine is not the culprit, however, that will confirm whether it has been the trigger.
Good troubleshooting strategy. Only time will tell.
Another thought occurs to me...Is the RAM that is installed on your Mac the original cards supplied by Apple - or did you upgrade it with 3rd party RAM yourself. The crashing you described earlier could very well be from a bad RAM card - even one that came from Apple.
It is one 2GB card, or two 1GB cards? If the crashing continues, I would suggest taking one of them out and seeing how things perform, then switching them and seeing if things change.

  • HT1553 I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

I want to do a clean install of Mountain Lion. Can I do this without a DVD version of the OS, and can I restore only specific things like iPhoto and iTunes libraries from Time Machine backup.

Mountain Lion is only available as a download, so there is no DVD to purchase. What you can do is download ML and then stop it from installing as soon as it's on your drive. From there you can make your own bootable ML flash drive.
When your purchase and download Mountain Lion, it will end up in the Applications folder and automatically want to install. Press Command+Q to stop the install and exit. The installer will remain on the hard drive.
    1) Right click on the installer and choose "Show Package Contents".
    2) A folder will open on the desktop. Drill down to Contents > SharedSupport and double click the disk image InstallESD.dmg to mount it on the desktop.
    3) From here you can either burn a DVD, or copy the contents to a flash drive. Personally, I would strongly suggest using an 8 GB flash drive formatted as Mac OS Extended. You will be able to boot to it in about 30 seconds instead of at least 10 minutes off of a DVD, and it will install MUCH faster. Make sure the flash drive is empty, or you've copied anything off it it you need as it will need to be erased.
    4) Don't just drag and drop the contents you see in the open disk image to the flash drive. It won't boot that way as it will be missing some hidden files. Open Disk Utility. You will something similar to this:
    5) To accomplish the above, highlight either the flash drive's single partition (as I did), or the item at the bottom (Mac OS X Install ESD), which is what you will see with the Lion disk image mounted. It doesn't matter which one you pick. You'll then have the option to select the Restore tab towards the upper right. Drag and drop from the left column into the Source and Destination fields as shown above. If you've already erased the flash drive, you can uncheck the box. Click the Restore button.
You've just made your own bootable Mountain Lion USB Flash drive installer. Once you boot to the flash drive, run Disk Utility first to erase the drive you want Mountain Lion on, then continue with the install.
As far as restoring your iPhone and iTunes libraries, I couldn't tell you. So I wouldn't do any of the above until someone else chimes in with a way to do that after a clean install of ML.

  • No internet after time machine backup

I sit here on a new computer under a different user name from my old backup. I can't get internet on my old user name. I realized my internet was working fine when I logged into my old computer at the same time to see if it was an internet issue or a computer issue. I'd hate to have to transfer all of my old info from my old user name if there is an easy fix for this that I'm not seeing.
I've rebooted the modem several times, I've run disk utility, and run all of the maintenance scripts for ONYX. I haven't deleted any preferences and I guess that should be my next step.
What's odd is that my old user name gets literally 1kbps internet, the new user name gets 1.5mbps, the usual for my internet. I've turned off the old computer to see if maybe there was a conflict with that as well, but the issue still happens.

it's all the same as far as I can tell. No sharing, and I only use airport and one network.
I went ahead and deleted a bunch of the preferences in the users>library>prefs. It reset all of the network options, but the lag still exists.
One thing I forgot to mention was that on my first attempt at the time machine backup, it got hung up at the very end when it said "transferring network preferences". This makes me think the time machine backup has some corrupted file in the network prefs. I wish when I had made my second and successful attempt at the backup was that I unchecked the network prefs to be tranferred.
I opened up terminal to see if there's some extraneous process running, and there's a lot of stuff running and I can't really decifer if the root processes are supposed to be running or not.
Anyway, I'm giving up and just starting over on a new account. I've searched around the web, and this seems to not be an uncommon problem (no internet after time machine backup), and there's no apparent solution either.
At least I don't have to reinstall the programs, just move a bunch of stuff. It's a pretty odd bug and I hope Apple picks up on this one to fix.

  • Time Machine backup restores OS X and Apps

Time Machine backup restores OS X and Apps or only Data?

    Hi lseit,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like information what what information is restored while restoring from Time Machine. For information on this process, please review the information in the attached article.
Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
Restoring data from Time Machine backups
With Time Machine, you can go "back in time" to restore files, versions of files, or your entire system. If Time Machine alerts you that your Time Machine backup disk can't be found, make sure your backup drive is connected and mounted.
    Best regards,
    Joe

  • Apple Applications Crash After Time Machine Restore

I recently had to do a full system restore using Time Machine. Ever since the restore completed, most of the Apple applications on my iMac immediately crash when I try to open them. Luckily, Disk Utility is one of the applications that does not crash, so I tried to verify/restore permissions, however, when I try to, I am given this:
    Repairing permissions for “Macintosh HD”

    Permissions repair complete
However, according to this KB article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448, those are all errors that I can "safely ignore".

In addition to not being able to run about 95% of my Apple applications, I can also no longer connect to my Time Capsule Time Machine backups. I am able to SEE the files in the built-in hard drive, but I can not mount the sparsebundle for the backups of any of my computers. I am however able to access them on a different computer. Also, if I try to use System Recovery from my Snow Leopard install disk again, it can't find any backups on my Time Capsule, even though my other computer can view the files with no problem.
Any help with any of these problems would be greatly appreciated.

I had a couple of apps start crashing today, with basically the same stuff in the crash reports.
Reinstalling Safari (which also reinstalls the WebKit and JavascriptCore frameworks, which seem to be part of the problem) worked for me.
I found that solution here, after Googling for "Symbol not found: __ZNK3JSC6JSCell17getTruncatedInt32ERi":
    http://www.meproxsoft.de/tag/time-machine/
I know very little German (even though I took German in high school-- it might have helped if the teacher actually knew English), but I managed to get "repair permissions" and "reinstall Safari" from all that.

  • All programs crash after Time Machine restore

After noticing that Photoshop hung the system every time I tried to open it, I ran a disk utility scan on my system disk. It came back that my hard drive was bad. I purchased a new hard disk, installed it into my Mac Pro, booted from my Snow Leopard CD, and tried to restore from my Time Machine backup to the new hard disk.
After restoring, my system boots but every program crashes shortly after I open it. If I open Dashboard it crashes after a few seconds... Mail... crashes after a few seconds. All of these programs worked fine on my "bad" hard drive. The only apparent problem was that attempting to open Photoshop would hang the system.
My original hard drive that was backed up to Time Machine was 300 GB. My new hard drive that I'm attempting to restore to is 2 TB. Does this matter?
Any ideas on how to get a stable system restored?

How did you format the new drive?
How did you do the restore? Did you do a full system restore, starting with your Snow Leopard Install disc? If not, what?
Have you done a +*Verify Disk+* and +*Repair Permissions+* on your internal HD, via Disk Utility?
It's possible that as your disk was failing, it corrupted things on your system, and Time Machine backed those changes up, so the restore brought them back. If everything else checks out, you might want to try the restore again, but select an earlier backup.

  • Major Spotlight & iTunes Issues After Time Machine Restore

I lost my hard drive recently and was able to get a new drive from Apple through Applecare. They installed a fresh copy of OS X, when I loaded my Time Machine backup it didn't copy preferences or the /Applications/ folder, so I booted into the install DVD and had it restore the complete system image from my Time Machine.
After the successful restore, Spotlight's been having major issues finding things. Sometimes it will have applications in the results, sometimes it won't. That goes for either the Command+Space interface or the regular Finder window.
Also my ~/Music folder wasn't backed up (I wanted to save space on the external and I figured I had my music on my iPod and I knew how to get it off so it wasn't an issue for me) so after I got my music BACK to the HD and had iTunes take it all in, most of the tunes it left in the XXXX.ext format instead of renaming them like it's supposed to -- is there any way I can fix that?
    Please help! Thanks!

This is how I reset spotlight, it worked: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2409
With iTunes I unchecked the "Organize My iTunes Library" option, closed preferences, reopened them, rechecked it, then closed it again and it reprocessed the library. Everything seems to be cool now, thanks!

  • Restore iphoto library from crashed mini Time Machine backup on new mb pro

    Hello,
My old mac mini is gone and I have a new macbook pro. Now I want to restore my iphoto library (260GB) from the most recent Time Machine backup but how can I do that without restoring the whole machine back? The problem is I don't have the needed space for the whole machine restore on my mb Pro. The new Pro is 500GB and the mini backup is 900gb. Even my user restore from the migration assistent can't complete because the space isn't there.

I Found it, i need to browse in finder to the time machine file in de folder where the backup is located. After I mount the file I can open timemachine with ctrl+click and open another timemachine backup. Select the mac mini backup and browse and restore. Wow I love, you only need to know how to do it    thanks for the replys

  • Auto mount/eject external drive for time machine backup/restore

I have an Iomega ultramax drive connected via firewire 800 for my Time machine backups.
This drive will automatically spin down after a period of non-use. I like this as it means lower power usage and lower risk of data loss (head crashes etc..).
My problem is, when the drive spins down like this, some file open operations pause until the drive spins up again. I cannot remember exactly which applications I have had the problem with, but I assumed that this was part of the OS. This delay can be up to 5 seconds or so and is really annoying.
Assuming this is not just a specific third party application thing. My suggestion to Apple is to do one or both of the following:
    1) Multi thread the file open dialog (process?) so that is comes up instantly, and then adds the drive when it has spun up.
    2) Modify time machine so that it can automatically mount/eject the external drive just when doing backups and restores.
Currently I have a bit of a messy work around to this problem where I have a loadd scheduled shell script that runs every hour that mounts the drive, runs time machine to backup and the ejects the drive. It works, but is not perhaps as nice a solution as it could be.
Does anybody else suffer from this problem?

Yes that is correct, the drive spins down and remains mounted.
To be perhaps clearer. The problem is not essentially a time machine problem, it is to do with whatever implements the file open capability that other apps use. In the above sitation, there is always a delay for the drive to spin up when I go to open a file (perhaps five seconds) in other applications. I assume this delay is caused by the file open process waiting until some data is retrieved from the external drive before giving me the option of choosing a file. This delay is annoying, as I do not ever want to open a file from my external drive (this is dedicated to time machine backups) when I am using pages, or any other application other than a time machine restore.
This particular issue is similar (but I suspect nowhere near as bad) as one of my pet hates about windows XP. In windows it appears that the explorer will wait for a response on all its connected drives (hard disks, mounted cds, network drives), so any sort of network connectivity or hardware delay will cause explorer to freeze. As explorer seems to be embedded in most things you do with the OS, this can cause anything or everything to freeze (web browsing, you name it).
In my setup, as I have the external drive totally dedicated to time machine backups, another thing that would fix the problem for me is the suggestion number 2 I suggested where time machine auto mounts for the backup and then ejects after the backup. With the feature, then the external drrive will only ever be mounted for short periods of time (the above problem does not ocurr if the external drive is not mounted), and when it is mounted it will be spinning, so I will never have my file open delay. I would however have a short delay when doing a time machine restore for the mount of the drive, but this is a much rarer event the using file open in all my other apps.
Thanks for the info on the feedback link, I will post this to that.

  • ITunes Library from Time Machine Backup to Windows 7?!

    Hi everyone,
Yeah, I'm switching over to a PC...
Does anyone know how to put an iTunes library from a Time Machine backup to a PC (running Windows 7?)
    Thanks!

When I tried to relaunch itunes holding down the option button and select my backed-up itunes folder from time machine
Is this after you restored the iTunes folder from Time Machine? Or were you trying to select the iTunes folder on the Tme Machine drive to use as the iTunes library?
    Quit iTunes.
    Open Time Machine.
    Selct \Music\iTunes\ in Time Machine.
Go back to when you want it restored from.
    Click on Restore.
    When it asks, select Replace.
After it is finsihed copying, launch iTunes.

  • Time Machine backup/restoring through migration assistant/issues

    Hi.
I would like to restore a backup from an external hard drive to my macbook pro.
Not beeing aware of the procedure, I skipped the "set-up assistant" phase where you're proposed the option of transferring informations from an another Mac or from a Time Machine, etc...
My backup files from my previous TimeMachine are on an external hard drive, plugged via USB to my MacBookPro. After looking for the right procedure, I tried to restore my backup through the Migration Assistant.
But the Migration Assistant won't find my external hard drive. Even though, weirdly, I can see and naviguate it via the Finder.
Is there something I should've done? Am I missing something?
I would really like some help on this one.
    Thanks.

Quit Notes and temporarily disable iCloud synchronization, if applicable.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with an item selected. Enter Time Machine and restore the selected item.

  • Mail 5.3 crash after Time Machine migration

    All,
I'm facing a problem with Mail 5.3 while trying to recover my email db from Time Machine after an update of MacOS.
Here the following steps I made to perform this update:
Update my iMac from SL to Lion 10.7.1 using the clean install way.
    Install last 10.7.5 combo update.
Perform migration of content and system preferences from my last Time Machine backup before the upgrade (using the Migration wizard)
    Finally, run Mail.
After having performed the email db conversion (without any error message), Mail seems to crash since no main window appears in the application.
I need to force the application to show the main window with the dedicated command of the Window menu.
But the result is not what we should expect !
Please check the snapshot herein attached.
While looking at the console, it seems that an error occurs during the execution of Mail, with the following error message and code :
29/10/12 08:30:37,835 Mail: An exception occurred during invocation of -[MailboxesController _writeSmartMailboxesToDisk]
29/10/12 08:30:37,836 Mail: *** -[NSSet initWithArray:range:copyItems:]: array argument is not an NSArray
Is there any member of this community who could have an idea what's wrong with this ?
    Thanks,
    Michel

Some progress on this issue to share with you.
First, Mail.app on the others user account was fine and I managed to successfully perform the migration from Time Machine.
This led to the point that the problem was relying on the Mail DB rather on the Mail.app itself.
I have reinitialised the Mail.app on the user account where the problem occured using the following guidelines:
    - access to the Library folder using the [Alt]+[Goto Menu] of the Finder
    - rename Mail and Mail Downloads folders into Mail.old and Mail Downloads.old
    - delete com.apple.mail.plist and all com.apple.mail... files in the Preferences folder
    Then, start the Mail.app again
Mail.app has been reinitialised completely !

  • 2 user folders after time machine backup. Macbook Pro 13", Mac OS X 10.6.8

After a time machine backup my macbook pro runs fine, however the backup has created a 2nd user file. my new user file is now named like my old one, just with " 1" added. I have 2 user folders, can I delete the old one?
After a random check of the content in both user folders I found out that it's not identical. Some files that weren't backed up with the time machine before the re-setup are in the original folder, while the new uder folder obviously only backup what it could find on the time machine disc. (Time machine backed up my whole hdd about 2 days before the crash & re-setup)
Due to this situation my local HDD is almost full now. The original user folder has 205 GB, the new one user 1 has 210 GB, plus applications with a 500GB HDD, I now have only 44GB left.
Can I delete the old user folder?
Can I then re-name the new one (user 1) back to "user"?
    Thanks
    J.

I've never heard of a 'problem' as you're having - and I searched Pondoni's Time Machine Troubleshooting FAQs and couldn't fine anythig similar.
I would be wary of deleting anything manually from your TM backup - the sparsebundles are rather sensitive. If you like, however, you could always erase your TM backups and start anew... that's the only way I would know to 'fix' the problem.
    Good luck,
    Clinton
