ITunes Data on iDisk

Is it feasible to transfer the entire Music library to either iDisk or, say, Dropbox? I've just ordered one of the new 11-in MB Airs and, because this is the computer I will have with me when travelling, I wish to use it for iPhone synchronisation. I therefore need to keep my Music folder on the Air, despite the limited 128GB capacity. It occurred to me that if I move the library to the cloud I could use the Air for iPhone sync while still having an up-to-date library available on my home computer (for all except iPhone sync, of course).
If this is possible, is it simply a matter of moving the entire Music folder? I seem to remember that OS X expects to find iTunes data in Documents in the main User folder and I'm wondering what problems I would encounter.

Thanks for your input. I had already considered and discounted these alternatives. Music sharing works only within a network and is therefore not an option for away-from-home laptop use. The idea of keeping the main music library on an external disk is certainly a viable option, but falls down on security--the possibility of data loss and, of course, the difficulty in maintaining a regular backup strategy.
Dropbox, which keeps a copy of data on all your computers and keeps them in sync, is a good possibility. As you say, you have to consider bandwidth and storage capacity. However, once the initial sync had been performed, incremental updates would be minor. There is a snag, though: My iTunes library would max out my 64GB HDD on the Air.
In the final analysis all this is directed towards being able to sync my iPhone with any of my three computers, especially with my Air when away from home for more than a few days. I don't need to sync music, just podcasts, applications and, of course, perform a backup. I think I need to go into this further to see if there is a way of doing this without having to have the complete iTunes library on all my machines.

  • How can I transfer my iTunes data from one computer to another? PS. My old computer won't turn on

I Recently bought a new computer and I need to transfer all my iTunes data from my old computer to the new one, how can I do that? And by the way, my old computer won't turn on

    Hello Nousernamebrah
Well get get your music from your old computer to your new computer, the old computer would have to work and turn on to access the files to be copied over. You also can access any previous purchased music and download it to your new computer as well. Check out the articles below for more information.

  • Can I get my iTunes account to import my old harddrives iTunes data?

To clarify, I was stupid and didn't read iTunes has an option to very easily make it run off an external HD. I went in and sent all the music and apps to an external HD without using the consolidate option. I switched the iTunes data to the file but even though it will read new data that it saves onto the file, it won't read the ones that were there from before. Am I screwed, or can I still use the old data?

A computer with itunes is a basic requirement for iphone.  It is not a stand alone device.
Changing the account  is covered in the settings section of the manual:

  • I have a copy of my iTunes data and I'm looking to restore it all back into a new version of iTunes reloaded after a hard drive crash.  How do I do this?

After having a hard drive crash, I've reloaded Windows 7 and all of my applications on a new hard drive.  I have also downloaded and installed a new version of iTunes on my computer.  I now want to restore all of my iTunes tracks, videos, movies, books, podcasts and all my playlists into the new version of iTunes from a back up of all of my previous hard drive before it crashed.  I have tried importing the data but iTunes drops all kinds of data (artist names, album names, track number, etc.) and have to now manually go through all of my iTunes data (18,000 tracks) to restore the data.  The data consists of a combination of purchased tracks (approx. 6,000) and my own personal CDs copied into iTunes.  I need help badly here as I'm lost on how to proceed.  Thanks.

Music Rescue also works as far as restoring your playlists etc. I've used it twice, you can use the Quick Recover mode, but have to click continue trial (something like that) allot, cp. to purchase option. Otherwise diesel is right as far as restoring via  your purchase history.

  • How can I sync my iphone to a new computer? My phone is the only source of my phone and itunes data.

I would like to use my iphone to instal and restorel all my phone data to a new computer. I lost the back up  of my old computer itunes data. How can this be done?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPhone. Only if you back up your phone manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
Do this to back up manually:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your phone to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your device without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your phone for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the phone for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0

  • How do I synch my ipad ios.8.1.2 to my itunes data

How do I synch my I pad II (ios.8.1.2) to my iTunes data on my PC?

If you want to sync content from your computer's iTunes to your iPad (you've synced the iPad to that computer before ?) then connect your iPad to your computer and select it in your computer's iTunes - on the current version of iTunes you should get a device icon next to the content category icons at the top left of the iTunes screen, click on that icon. On the left-hand side of the screen you should then get a series of categories which you can use to select and sync content from your computer to your iPad.

  • Moving iTunes data to an external drive

My iTunes data is currenly 58gb. I would like to move it to an external drive. What do I need to copy to the external drive and how do I point iTunes to the moved files?

Do NOT copy the files yourself.
    iTunes prefs -> Advanced.
Set the iTunes music folder location to the external.
Tick *Copy files to iTunes music folder location when adding to iTunes*.
Tick *Keep iTunes music folder organized*.
Then iTunes menu File -> Library -> Consolidate.
After it finishes, you can delete \Music\iTunes\\iTunes music\ folder. Delete ONLY the iTunes music folder.

  • How do I copy all iTunes data from ext to ext disc

    Hi,
my RAID mirroring system had a defect. Now I bought a new 1000 GB disc (two discs seem to be safer than a RAID mirror system after all) and want to copy all my iTunes data (approx. 400 GB) from that RAID mirroring system to the new disc. How can I do that so that iTunes works on with the new copy? (Later I want to reconfigurate the 2 x 500 GB RAID mirroring system into one 1000 GB disc and use it as back-up). I've checked already:
    1) "iTunes data to saving medium" (or whatever that option is called in the English version): it only saves to CD.
    2) "iTunes data export" (or whatever that option is called in the English version): it creates an .xml dataset and probably is no solution for my copy problem.
    3) Shall I just copy all iTunes data via FINDER to the new disc and then tell iTunes where to find the iTunes data? Or what else should I do?

Thanks again. That one runs on my keyboard under "alt" (alternate).
Maybe you know this one too.
Under "podcasts" at the RAID Mirroring system I found only some of my podcasts. iTunes seems to hold more than 50% of my podcasts on my local disc (under the folders Music / iTunes).
I know that iTunes acts peculiar when it doesn't find the path I specified (that happens when I forget to start the ext. disc before I start iTunes). It tries to build a new database on my local disc (That's the reason - as far as I assume - why more than 50% of my podcasts are on my local disc.) Is there any simple procedure how I can tell iTunes to copy these podcasts to the external disc or - provided I copy them myself - to tell iTunes: mix the two podcast-folders together.

  • Transfer iTunes data from new pc to hdd

I have already transfer my iTunes data from a Dell pc to HDD and I would like to transfer my iTunes data from a new Sony pc to the same HDD. Is it possible?

Yeah... that's not going to work and no logical expectation that it would either.
You stated that you have two iTunes librarys.
    Close iTunes.
Ensure you know the location of the library that you want to utilize.
Hold SHIFT and launch iTunes.  Continue holding SHIFT until the window appears asking to create a new library or use selected.  Select the option to use selected.
Point iTunes to the library that you want to utilize.
If you want to combine the libraries, at this point you can use the Add File/Folder option in iTunes to add the folders.
Once complete it would be a good idea to consolidate the iTunes library allowing iTunes to move all media to a central location and eliminate the two separate libraries.
If you wish to keep the two libraries completely separate, you can utilize the SHIFT/launch iTunes method to switch between them.  They MUST be in completely separate directory structures for this to work.

  • Whats the easiest way to migrate my itunes data from old failing PC to new PC so I can sync on new PC?

I have a failing PC that I sync my Ipad and Iphone to now. I have a new PC that I want to start using for this function. How do I migrate my Itunes Data Etc...so that I can sync on the new PC and not lose my apps, music, pics etc....There has to be a simple-stupid way of doing this. I have already downloaded Itunes on the new PC and just waiting for an answer to go forward.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

  • Hello, my iTunes dates are crashed on my mac, how can I download all my itunes match songs and save on my mac?

Hello, my iTunes dates are crashed on my mac, how can I download all my itunes match songs and save on my mac?

    Hi mrmoo13!
You have a couple of options for transferring your music library from one computer to another. First, you can download all of your music that is stored in the cloud on iTunes Match by following the instructions on this page:
iTunes 11 for Mac: Access all your music anytime, anywhere with iTunes Match
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12284
You can follow steps listed in the section right here:
Play or download songs from iCloud
You can play songs directly from iCloud, or you can download songs so you can play them when you’re not connected to the Internet.
If a song is available in iCloud, it has a Download button next to it.
To play the song, double-click it.
To download the song, click the Download button.
After you download a song to a computer, it remains in the computer’s iTunes library, even if you turn off iTunes Match.
To only display downloaded songs in your iTunes library, choose View > Hide Music in the Cloud. This also hides any previous iTunes Store purchases you haven’t downloaded.
For information about downloading and playing songs on an iOS device, see the documentation for the device.
In order to make it easier to download all of your music, you can highlight all of the songs in your iTunes Match section and then click download, as mentioned in these instructions.
You can also choose to transfer the music from your old computer to the new one by following the steps in this article, whcih will give you some other options for doing this transfer:
