Itunes deleted all of my songs

My family got a new computer and i wanted to put itunes on it. When i loaded itunes and plugged my ipod in, itunes deleted every last song i had. what do i do? an how can i get them back?

You apparently had your iPod on autosync. You should have gotten a message when you docked the iPod to the new computer that said something to the effect about your iPod is set-up for another iTunes library, do you want to make this iTunes library the one on your iPod? Yes or NO. Those aren't the exact words, but I think you get the message. You apparently said Yes. Bottom line when you said yes, docked to an empty iTunes library, the autosync wiped out the contents of your iPod. The purpose of autosync is to make the iPod contents a mirror image of iTunes contents, no iTunes content, no iPod contents. Unfortunately, unless you had your library backed up or still have access to the other computer, I'm afraid there's nothing you can do. If you do have access to the other computer that still has your library, simply re-sync your iPod to that computer. By all means, DO NOT DOCK you iPod to the new system until you have iTunes completely installed & your library has been moved to the new system.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.  Use your backup copy to put everything back.
If you have failed to bakup, then you can transfer itunes purchases from an ipod: File>Transfer Purchases

I don't see an issue, but if you mean why didn't you get most of your memory back you need to see what else is using storage. Go to Settings/General/Usage. Wait a bit for it to calculate storage allocation, then when it finishes you can see how much storage each app uses.

    Hi,
If the tracks were not in your iTunes library on your computer when you subscribed to match, I am afraid that they are lost. Do you have a separate back up of this music?

  • I'm editing a band deleting songs, then suddenly it deleted all of the songs by an artist!  It's happened twice. Once I tried to restore them from the recycle bin but it did'nt work.  The 2nd time the songs were not in the recycle bin.  Why?

I'm editing a band by deleting songs I do not like on iTunes on my PC. When I believe I'm deleting a song it ends up deleting ALL of the songs by that band (this is after I've deleted many individual songs sucessfully)!  This has happened twice since the new version of iTunes.  The first time I tried to restore the songs from my recycle bin but they just vanished when I tried to restore them.  The second time (today)  the songs were not even in the recycle bin.  Has this happened to anyone else out there? I have to now relocate all of those cd's and then reinstall them and go through them and put songs back onto various playlists (I have a lot of them).  Hassle!!!

Time you backed up so you can recover in the event of a crisis.

  • Do I have to delete all of my songs on my iPod to add more?

I had to restore my laptop to get rid of a virus and it deleted my iTunes library. So when I tried to put more songs up there it said I had to delete all of my songs that are already on my iPod besides the ones purchased through iTunes. Is there a way I can keep the songs already on there?
Also another question. My laptop still wont work so i have it always on Safe Mode w/ Networking and it says I cant use my iPod on iTunes at that moment. But it does it all the time. Any way I can use it?
Any help or suggestions will help. Thanks!

"so the songs are only on the iPod now."
Not good at all.. You should always have a backup copy.
The music sync is one way - computer to ipod.  The exception is itunes purchases.
You can transfer itunes purchases from your ipod:  File>Transfer Purchases.
You can try a forum search as this is asked and answered often.  There are some third party programs ( not supported by Apple) that you can try at your risk.

  • A update to iTunes deleted all my playlists. How do i get them back

A update to iTunes deleted all my playlists. How do i get them back? I have a windows 7 operating system.

No, they aren't sold anymore. If you have a backup you could restore them from it.

  • HT201593 The newest version of iTunes deletes all of my iPod Touch 5th gen audible and visual media when I delete or add music or video to my library and add it to my device manually. Why?

The newest version of iTunes deletes all of my iPod Touch 5th gen audible and visual media when I delete or add music or video to my library and add it to my device manually. Why? I guess the question speaks for itself. I have the latest version of iTunes and iOS 8.2 on my iPod Touch.

If it's any consolation i've just had a similar thing happen. Went to add a playlist and it wiped 35 gig of music off my iPod touch 64g in a nanosecond. I've got the latest iTunes and osx but do not back up because i keep different styles of music (and loads of it) in separate libraries and devices which i don't want mixed together. All my stuff is burned from cd so it's not lost for good and i've got a hard drive with the "lost" mp3 music on it but even so it will take literally weeks to prune the tracks for my iPod to be the same again. Why do they make it so difficult to manage your music on these things. I have massive amounts of music on my computer so autofill is a disastrous unusable gimmick to me. The whole thing seems to be aimed at 9 year old kids with about 6 mp3's on their phone rather than serious music lovers (for example accessing EQ is a joke let alone the lack of a manual option). I'm a dj and use apple for that reason but to be honest i'm beginning to wonder why. I'm absolutely livid. The weird thing is that my mac still shows the titles of the missing tunes in the 'on my device' window but as my macbook storage display shows no increase i'm pretty sure it's all gone. Nightmare. I have no confidence in this device anymore and could barely use the previous osx 8.2 anyway. Why they have to change it every ten minutes is beyond me. As the old saying goes 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' but this format just gets more broken every time they update. An absolute disgrace. Why not just drag and drop or delete. No wonder the iPod is said to be a dying device, it's for music, it is not a phone. Not fit for purpose anymore. I can't be bothered to read a massive 'how to use' article every update. Good technology should be easier and more intuitive with each new version. I suppose i'll have to phone apple at my expense to find out what's going on, or maybe that's the whole idea. Very very very not happy.

Next time an app update gets stuck try a reset. Press and hold both the home and power buttons for10-15 seconds till the Apple logo appears. Then release both buttons. Wait till your iPad starts on it's own. Try now. Also YouTube is still available. If you can't find it the the app store go to the bottom of the app store page and tap purchased. All your deleted apps will be listed and you can reinstall YouTube from there.

  • HT204302 iTunes deleted all of my playlists!

iTunes deleted all of my playlists. Booted up and they had vanished

If you didn't backup your playlists they can't be retrieved if they are deleted, you have to recreated them: iTunes: How to backup and restore playlists
However you could check to see if your original library still exists. Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when launching iTunes 7. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. The default location for your iTunes library is in C:\Documents and Settings\Username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\ (or C:\Username\Music\iTunes\ in Vista). Look in there and see if you have more than one library file (they have the extension .itl) If you have more than one try opening them in turn, you may find your original library is still intact: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file

  • Either iTunes or my computer deletes all of my songs every time I plug any of my iPods in

Whenever I plug in either my 80gig 5gen iPod Video, 8gig 5gen iPod Nano, or 8gig 3gen iPod Touch into my computer, all the songs are instantly erased.  I used to have a problem where I would have to restore my iPods to get them to work (and in some occasions the restore proccess would loop), but NOW this frustrating problem is occuring.  It bothers me to no end whenever I have to meticulously pick through my iTunes library to load the 45 gigs of music I listen to onto my video (from picking to syncing is roughly a 3 hour process).  I feel like this started when I switched computers at Christmas, but then again, I didn't have the latest version of iTunes on my old laptop (which I no longer have).  Is there any way to tell whether it's the comptuer or iTunes deleting these files?  I tried to revert back to a previous version of iTunes but was unable to due to the fact "the playlists were made with a more recent version of iTunes" or some nonsense like that.  Oh, and if any of you can offer your assistance, I'll be your loyal servant for all of eternity. I'm running Windows 7 on an Acer Aspire 5253-BZ686.  If you have any more questions, ask them and I will do my best to respond soon after.
Oh! This is the series of events in which it happens... Plug in>computer recognizes and makes "ding" noise>iPod shows up in iTunes (shows it has music on it)> Add songs or adjust titles/artists etc.>Click eject button on iTunes>iPod screen goes back to home screen>(before physically unplugging) Check music>GONE.
    GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!
Edit:  Just plugged iPod Video in and it requires a restore... gave me some error message like "the contents of Jacob's iPod could not be read, restore it before it can be used" or something.  When it was restored, it gave me the message, "iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode.  You must restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes."  (This was after the first and second restore)... I'm about to go take my anger out on June Bugs.

    Some things that might help:
Restore one or all the devices as "new" and start from scratch.
Use playlists to control what syncs to the devices.
Create a "new" library in a different directory and see if that resolves the ongoing issue.

  • How do I turn off Sync without iTunes deleting all the songs on my iPod!

Well that's basically my question. I want to keep all the songs that are already there, but from this point on just add new ones manually. When I unchecked the Sync box it wiped out my iPod. Thanks in advance for any help.
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You need to turn off automatic sync before you delete all your tracks from iTunes. If you don't, then you need to prevent the iPod from synching when you connect:
While connecting the iPod to the computer, hold down the Command and Option keys on a Mac. This should stop the iPod from auto synching with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 3 and 25 seconds depending on your computer. Then you can set iTunes to manual synchronization.
Of course, this won't help if your iPod has already had the tracks removed. But you'll know what to do next time.
    Regards.

  • Since ios6, itunes deleted all my songs on my ipod and on my computer!

I have itunes set to organize my library for me. I found that for some reason after ios6 update, when I synced my ipod, all of the music got removed from it. However, at the time, I could still play it on the computer.
When I looked into the itunes folder, I found that when I played a song on my computer, itunes would copy that song from its original location in the itunes>music> (artist name) folder to another folder it created in itunes>(artist name). In other words, it was moving everything out of the music subfolder into the general itunes folder. Everything that it moved would subsequently sync fine to the ipod.
So, thinking I had the solution, I told itunes to consolidate my files in my library. Apprently bad idea. It did copy all of the files from within the music folder out into the general itunes folder, but somewhere in the copy, it must have lost the files, because now most of them are no longer on the computer either. When I go to play them in itunes now, there is an exclamation point. Itunes deleted my music and instead, I have folders with artists name, and a placeholder of sorts where the file is supposed to be with a little x over it (Ihave windows 7, btw). Nor are the files in their original folders in the music subfolder. I never touched any of this music manually. I was trusting itunes to do its thing with keeping my library organized and all.
It did manage to copy about 1000 of them just fine, but all the rest of my music is gone from my computer! I did also restore the ipod, which seemed to sync fine after the restore, but again, because of the now missing music on my computer, obviously those files did not sync. Help. What happenned????

Reset didn't work at first until I unchecked the 'sych only checked songs and videos' in iTunes, clicked apply and then rechecked it and clicked sync and it worked.
    Thanks.
