ITunes deleted everything but purchases

At least half of my iTunes library is made up of songs that have been imported from CD's or downloaded online.  After the last "update" for iTunes, 11.1.1, it deleted everything but the purchases.  My 5th Generation iPod Nano has everything on it, but all I'm able to do is transfer the couple of purchases that it deleted.  This is the absolute worst thing an update has done so far.  Is there any way to fix this?  I tried using Time Machine, but it doesn't seem to have any of the deleted songs in it.  Adding all the songs back one by one would take weeks.

+On a side note, what's up with all of the ".tmp" files in my iTunes folder. I have 123 of them...+
That's been seen when other programs interfere with itunes saving its database file. The important one is the ITL file. All the others (XML, genius, extras)can be rebuilt from the ITL.
Did you recently update or install some security software? How about backup software like Carbonite or Mozy? This kind of software is notorious for scanning the itunes iTL file and putting a lock on it - while itunes is trying to update it.
You need to configure whatever other software it is, to not interfere with itunes.
If the photos are only on the iPod, yes I am fairly certain you will lose those photos if you sync your ipod to a different library. If the photos are on the PC you can always rebuild the itunes library and sync them back to the ipod.

You're drawing an erroneous conclusion. Dependencies for base are self contained within base. That is to say, you can install only the packages in base, and boot into a working system.
If it's not working, then it gives rise to the idea that you have packages outside of the base group that are providing the functionality of packages in base. I'm not willing to test this further than verifying what I think the output of the comm should be -- and it looks correct on my end.

when i go into history to delete everything but when i go to type site it comes up and name and password are saved i want to delete all this but cannot edit

    Quote from the article.
Time Machine in OS X Lion includes a new feature called "local snapshots" that keeps copies of files you create, modify or delete on your internal disk. Local snapshots compliment regular Time Machine backups (that are stored on your external disk or Time Capsule) giving you a "safety net" for times when you might be away from your external backup disk or Time Capsule and accidentally delete a file.
So what makes a notebook any different then a desktop, other then with a desktop you might have your tm backup drive connected all the time.
The object here is to not indiscriminately delete files you need or want to keep. I personally have never deleted a file I wanted to keep.
In essence a backup is for catastrophic failure of your system. So it can be restored once that failure has been fixed. Not because you go in willy nilly and start deleting files.

  • ITunes deletes everything from iPod Touch when I try to sync.

This has happened to me five times now, and I am incredibly frustrated. When I start to sync my iPod Touch with iTunes, instead of actually syncing it deletes everything from my iPod (music, videos, podcasts, audiobooks, etc.; apps and other data aren't deleted). I have over 30gb of audio on my iPod, so it takes longer than 12 hours to get everything synced back up again. This first happened to me right after I upgraded to iOS 6, so I thought it was just a bug, but it has happened four times since, and three times in the last four days. I did a factory restore of my iPod last night and then synced it all night, and then iTunes just erased everything off again when I was syncing it again this evening.
Moreover, when I attempt to sync again to get my music back, iTunes only transfers some of my library. And each time I cancel the sync and restart it, the number of songs transferred over decreases. Sometimes soft resetting the iPod fixes this problem and allows the entire library to sync, but last time that wouldn't do the trick, which is why I tried the factory reset. It's still happening though, as I'm trying to sync right now and it's only showing 1500 of my 8000 tracks.
I have an iPod Touch 4G running iOS 6 and am running iTunes on Windows 7 32-bit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have a similar problem with my iPhone 4S running iOS 6 (Win7 64bit). When the first beta of iOS came out, I used the restore trick to load it on my phone without a developer license. I knew what I was getting into. This problem happened about 4-5 times through the various beta releases. When iOS was released to the public, it would not let me upgrade to it, so I had to DFU my phone to get it on the final release and restore a backup. Fine, but now I was on the official release. The problem has occurred twice now since then.
I sync my phone daily as I have a lot of playlists that use the "Last Played Date" attribute. I will sync my phone and the next time I go to play a song, all my music is gone. It is very intermittent. To fix, I have to uncheck all my playlists in iTunes, sync. Then recheck my playlists and have it readd. Like OP, I have 35-40GB of music, so it takes a long time to have to re-add everything.
I originally attributed this to a bug in the beta so I dealt with it. Now that I'm getting the error on the final release, its a bit more annoying. My wife has a 4S as well (Vista 32bit) and she has not had this issue.

  • ITunes deleted everything.  What do I do?

For the second time now, iTunes has deleted everything in my iTunes library. Videos, music, apps, podcasts, the whole shebang. This is actually the second time it's happened too, all within a week. The first occurred after I restarted my computer, and I just fixed it earlier today (although I'm not sure how I did). Now, for the second time, iTunes has been swiped. I've checked the iTunes folder, and I have some files like, "iTunes Library", "iTunes Library Extras", and a .xml file called "iTunes Music Library". I'm sure I could use these in some way, but I'm not quite sure how. Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • Itunes Deleted EVERYTHING!?

I have just reformated my computer and after i got everything back i opend itunes and tryed to sync but it said i had to althenticate my computer so i did and it whent through and deleted all my music and apps. i cannot seam to find a way to get anything back or a reason why this happend. i try adding music, it wont add. i try doing anything with itunes, wont work. I dont have any apps at all beasides the deafault ones and ones i didnt pay anything for. can someone help me?

You can redownload some iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
After you get them on your computer you need to restore the iPod to factory defaults/new iPOd and then sync with your iTunes library.
The iPd saw the reformeated computer as a new iTunes library. You can only synce to one iTunes library.

My iTunes has been messed up before, and I lost a lot of music, but I let it go and just restarted everything. But the other day I clicked on iTunes to listen to music, and everything that was there before was absolutely gone. No music, videos, apps, e v e r y t h i n g. I dont have a Sony Vaio, so I cant use other answers that other people have gotten. I'm to the point where im absolutely clueless on what to do, and I really need help! Thanks!

You can download iTunes purchases again.

  • ITunes deleted all my purchased music from my iPod

I just got back from vacation and hooked up my iPod and suddenly I got messages that my purchased songs weren't authorized (this is on the one and only computer I have ever used for my iPod).
After entering my username and password, it used up one of my 5 "other computer" authorizations. Now, I just added 1 GB of RAM, so maybe that's it, but this is bullcrap.
I'm glad I've only bought 42 songs and I can tell you that I won't be buying anymore through iTunes anytime soon. I'll stick to CDs from now on.
As usual, DRM hurts the paying customer and does nothing to stop the pirates.

I don't understand what you are upset about. If you had deauthorized your computer and then reauthorized it would have fixed you problem without losing an authorization. But you've only used 2 and have 3 left, and you can cancel some when (or if) you hit 5.
Are you planning on leaving them in your will or something?
Why are your songs gone from your computer? If you only needed to reauthorize this will not delete them. Have you tried a search?

  • A lady at Best Buy erased everything off my iphone 3gs, now when i try to download facebook app it said it requires ios 4.3. I have hooked it up to itunes and everything but nobody knows how to get the ios 4.3 on this phone. HELP someone plz

I need help on how to download the ios 4.3. to my iphone 3gs. My mom was using it and everythig was fine but when she upgraded the lady erased everything so it would be like new and now when i try to download a app like facebook it says it requires ios 4.3. and i have asked people at phone places and i have hooked it up to itunes and still havent been able to..when i go to settings then general it doesnt show up any software updates, that whole part is erased. someon eplease help me!\

What version of iOS are you running? I'm going to bet that you do NOT have a 3Gs. You have a 3G. The highest version of iOS that can run is 4.2.1.
If you did not save a copy of the older facebook at that could run on 4.2.1 on your computer that you can sync back, then you're out of luck. The newest version (and the only one available in the app store) will not run on 4.2.1.
You will have to resort to using the mobile web page in Safari or find a 3rd party app that will run on your phone.

  • Itunes burns all but purchased music

I'm trying to burn a playlist of existing and purchased music, but each time it burns, it excludes the purchased music. I have never burned the purchased music before, so I haven't reached the 7 song limit, and I know I checked those boxes. The suggestions given by itunes haven't helped. The CDs are fine otherwise. Any help is appreciated.

1st check if your purchased music will play on your Mac - maybe you need to authorize those tracks.
2nd check twice if your iTunes Burning Preferences are set to "AudioCD" (or DATA DVD/CD) as purchased music can't be burned to MP3 CDs.

  • My iPad will sync everything but purchased movies and tv shows.

The message I get is that my computer is not authorised but when I go into store - authorize etc it tells me that my computer is already authorised.
Am I missing something? This has never been a problem before.

Oh alright -- I manage to resolve my own stupidity quite abruptly, actually.
Shortly after posting this, I annoying took another gander at iTunes Store settings. To my own idiocy, I must have unchecked "Show iTunes purchases in the cloud" at some point. In my defense, though, the availability of songs in iCloud threw me off quite a lot.
Ha ha -- anyways, if anyone else is having the same problem, check there.

  • ITunes syncing everything but audio files

I woke up this morning to go for a jog, having synced my phone the night before.  I turned on the music app to discover that everything is missing.  So I tried syncing it again, and I watched colored bar at the bottom on itunes as it built up my audio files but then suddenly at the end of the syning process, the audio files suddenly disappear again.  I've tried restarting my computer, restarting my phone, but still the audio files won't sync.  All the audio files are still in iTunes, but they simply won't transfer to the iPhone.  All apps and other files sync perfectly.  Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I think i'm having the same problem. did you ever get this figured out? mine happened right after i update to the ios 6.0.1 software.

  • Auto delete everything but specified folder contents from txt file

    Hey Guys,
I am brand new to using Powershell (like 48 hours into using it for work) and I've run into a bit of an issue.  I've only taken a programming concept classes so some of the stuff makes sense to me but a lot of it is new.  Basically I've made a
script that automatically deletes any files over X amount of days.  My next step is to have an exceptions text that will have a list of folders that should not have its contents deleted.  This is what I have so far.
    $Date= Get-Date
    $Days = "7"
    $Folder = "C:\publicftp\users"
    $LastWrite = $Now.AddDays(-$Days)
#----- getting DO NOT DELETE listing from TXT ----#
    $Exceptions = Get-Content "c:\exclude.txt"
    $Files = Get-Childitem $Folder -Recurse -Exclude "c:\exclude.txt" | Where {$_.LastWriteTime -le "$LastWrite"}
    foreach ($File in $Files)
        if ($File -ne $NULL)
            Remove-Item $File.FullName -Exclude $Exceptions | out-null
I've seen a lot of threads that show how to auto delete contents or how to exclude specific file types but I haven't seen an answer to my particular problem.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!

    Hi Rabbot,
The script below may be also helpful for you, and uses the -whatif parameter in Remove-Item cmdlet, which doesn’t actually remove anything but simply tells you what would happen if you did call Remove-Item.
    $Exceptions = @()
    Get-Content "c:\exclude.txt" | foreach{
    $Exceptions += $_} #store the exception file to array
    $Folder = "C:\publicftp\users"
    $LastWrite = (get-date).adddays(-7) #over 7 days.
    $Files = Get-Childitem $Folder -Recurse | Where {$_.LastWriteTime -le $LastWrite} #filter files which over 7 days.
    Foreach ($file in $files){
if ($Exceptions -notcontains $file.fullname){ #if the file is not listed in the exception array.
    Remove-Item $File.FullName -whatif} #use -whatif to test
    I hope this helps.

  • Time Machine deletes all but latest two backups

    Hello,
Today I was backing up my macbook, with about 38 GB of space left on my harddrive, and Time Machine deletes everything but the latest two backups (from Feb 2012 to May 2012).... I had things on there from 2009. TM preferences now says I have 27 GB of free space, after the latest backup. I didn't have anything big enough on my computer to be backed up that justified deleting years of data, over 200 GB, in order to compensate for the new data that had to be backed up. Is there any way to recover the files that were erased off of my external hard-drive that were deleted during Time Machine's semi-routine back up?
    Thank you

    Sebastian Kuhn wrote:
Is there no way to set up Time Machine such that it will ASK before destroying a (potentially valuable) "old" backup
That's how it worked at first, on Leopard.  But many users either didn't understand it, or never got around to doing anything, so had no backups at all when disaster struck.  It was fairly common, so Apple changed it with Snow Leopard.
Why does Apple assume that it is always the OLDEST backup (which will be hardest to retrieve) that people would be willing to loose?
That's usually correct.  Time Machine is not a traditional archive-type app;  if you need archives, make archives.
If you frequently need things from your backups, you may have a deeper problem.  But most likely, you just need a larger backup drive.
That all applies to the vast majority of users -- they have a single internal HD with less than 1 TB of data, so a 2 TB backup drive is ok, 3 TB large enough for most everybody.
If that's not enough for your setup, you probably need a different strategy anyway.  You may have some data that changes frequently and should be backed-up hourly by Time Machine, plus something like a large media drive that's best backed-up only once a day or so by a different app, such as one of the "cloning" products.
there should be the option to exclude different items when backing up to different disks. Is there?
No.  Apparently Apple wants to keep it as simple as possible, with  few options that may confuse some folks, so instead of making a decision, they do nothing  (that's not just Time Machine, either).  Remember, most of the folks using Time Machine have never used any backup app at all.
Apple's resisted all suggestions (and there have been many) for things like the ability to limit the size or age of backups, reduce the 10-day warning when no backup has been done, etc.  Like it or not, that's Apple's approach to pretty much everything -- streamlined, simple, easy to use.  Very successful for the majority.
Is there any workaround other than the cumbersome procedure of turning Time Machine off, and under "options" re-select the correct set of folders to exclude every time I move from one disk to another? Not exactly what I would call a user-friendly interface...
Best of course, is get a larger disk.  Is your data worth the price of a 2 TB disk?
There are some elaborate workarounds involving automatically swapping destinations and exclusions, but they're very "iffy" as they do things that TM (and OSX) don't anticipate so don't react well to.
Effective with Lion, however, there's a new tmutil command that in theory would allow you to write an AppleScript to set a destination, add or remove exclusions and run a backup.  Many things could go wrong, of course, but I know of no way to detect which destination is available.
Much safer, easier, and more reliable to get a larger drive (or better strategy).

We are having problems with the forum software (I can't see any new thread), so you are very lucky if somebody reads your question. Personally, the forum are near unusable for me now.
Respecting to that question, you want to delete everything but leave Office. Is this correct? If so, you will have to contact with Microsoft to see if it's legal to sell your Mac with Office installed > http://www.microsoft.com/mac/support I would not sell the Mac with Office installed.
To delete everything, you will have to erase the drive and reinstall OS X. Normally, you should turn off the Mac after reinstalling OS X, but in this case, the new owner won't have Office. On the contrary, if you install Office, the owner will have to use the Mac with your settings, so there will be other steps to follow
