Dan,
Your first step might be to follow the advice in this Apple Knowledge Base article:

  • ITunes deleted my whole music library. I was not performing an upgrade at the time. They disappeared over night without me doing anything. How can i get them back without going one by one?

I woke up this morning to find my computer had restarted itself. I don't know why. Must've upgraded something. When i opened iTunes my entire library was gone. The playlists are still there, just nothing inside them. iTunes didn't upgrade over night since it still asks me to. I've tried a system restore to the day previous but it did nothing. How can i get everything back the way it was? I would really like to not have to import it all again individually.

    Empty/corrupt library after upgrade/crash
Hopefully it's not been too long since you last upgraded iTunes, in fact if you get an empty/incomplete library immediately after upgrading then with the following steps you shouldn't lose a thing or need to do any further housekeeping.  Note that in iTunes 11 an "empty" library may show your past purchases with links to stream or download them.
In the Previous iTunes Libraries folder should be a number of dated iTunes Library files. Take the most recent of these and copy it into the iTunes folder. Rename iTunes Library.itl as iTunes Library (Corrupt).itl and then rename the restored file as iTunes Library.itl. Start iTunes. Should all be good, bar any recent additions to or deletions from your library.
See iTunes Folder Watch for a tool to catch up with any changes since the backup file was created.
When you get it all working make a backup!
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.
Would you mind telling me which anti-virus package you use? It may be that it is disturbing iTunes when it tries to write out the fresh database, as it does after almost any activity with your library. I'm noticing more of this type of problem than usual and trying to see if there is any pattern. It may help to prevent a repeat of the problem if you look at the advanced options for your AV package and see if you can find a way to exclude the iTunes folder from any real-time scanning process.

  • ITunes deletes his own library every now and then .....

It happened already a couple times that iTunes has no songs in the list. iTunes is when i start it just like new. not one song or playlist in the database.
The strange thing is, that all songs can be found in the iTunes Music folder.
I can add them all by clicken on "Add Folder to Library..." He creates the whole Library again with all my sings. But then every now and then, it is just all gone again. Very strange.....

    Does this help?

Using Windows, the only answer would seem to be to re-encode them using iTunes.

  • My iTunes reset my whole Library by 8 weeks and Error -50

Hello I'm very angry right now. I went to open iTunes tonight and it asked me to open a library so I chose the one that was most recent, but a lot of my stuff had gotten deleted. I went to download all my stuff again, but it said that I had Error -50. I reset my connection and it still didn't work. I logged out of iTunes then closed it and opened it back up and then logged back in but that didn't work. I NEED HELP I WANT TO GET MY MOVIES BACK!!

Scratch that...  Just yanked Virusbarrier X6 (Intego) from both my MacPro's and what were very sluggish machines (including the error -50 in iTunes) seem to have magically regained youth and vigor...  Will try it for the next couple of days, but it would appear that VirusBarrier was at the root of all issues...

  • HELP!! I deleted my whole library!!!

HELP ME!!!! I had a whole bunch of duplicates in my library and I was trying to delete them and inadvertantly erased my entire library!! The songs were all in my recycle bin, I clicked 'restore files' in my recycle bin but they're not back. When I do a search on my computer for some songs that were deleted-NOTHING is found-even in hidden files!!
I tried to restore it by connected my iPod, but that only changed that as well to only songs I've purchased!
I really hope someone can please help me with this!!!!!
    THANK YOU!!

If you have your music on your iPod, this post from Zevoneer tell you how to get it back.

  • ITunes deleted half my library....no songs on iPod yet!!!

I just purchased an iPod. In anticipation of that, I ripped my entire cd collection into iTunes....I used Apple Lossless format. In order to get everything to fit onto the iPod, I attempted to convert those files to AAC files. However, in the middle of that process (converting multiple albums), the album folders and related contents (in other words, all the songs on each album) suddenly disappeared. They are no longer on the harddrive, nor will iTunes recognize any of them. I have nothing on the iPod yet. I think the files might be in my protected bin, however there are several hunderd files there, all with the same file name. Help!!!!

First check if they were deleted. Pull a few files from a large group dated around the disappearance of your files. After taking them out of your 'bin' onto the desktop change the extension to .m4a and see if you can launch it. If you can there you go (just use the recovery feature of norton or whoever protects your bin). If not you need to look and see if it is still in the library
iTunes keeps its library in the My Music folder. Right Click your iTunes folder in My Music and choose properties. See if it is a large file (Gigabytes). If it is just dig around in there. Make sure hidden files are visible.

  • ITunes deleted half my library!! Help

Today i opened iTunes and a message popped up and said something about some songs not being itunes format or something. When it reopend upit was doing the gapless playback thing for some reason. Now i am missing about 3000 songs from my library. Anyone know what could have caused this? I havent moved or deleted the songs off my harddrive or anything.

Working with iTunes 11.1.3.8, Windows 7, iPhone 5 running OS 7.0.4.
After latest upgrade of phone OS, I had great difficulty convincing iTunes there was a phone attached via USB to the computer. Following the troubleshooting instructions lead to the concept of interfering programs, but I did not follow that up, since no other programs had changed.
Instead, I found that if the iPhone was set to "Autolock: never", and if the phone is plugged in to the computer when iTunes starts, then iTunes will say it cannot see the phone, but closing and restarting iTunes reveals the phone, about 25% of the time. I have iTunes set to automatically sync when the phone is attached, and the results of each sync has been different.
The first time, it deleted all but one playlist that was on my phone, and put all songs into that playlist (90's music). The second time I synched, all songs and playlists were gone. Then I turned the phone completely on and off (resetting), and when I synched again (a few days later), all the songs were back
on the phone, but there were no playlists whatsoever.
However, looking on the computer in iTunes, when it sees the phone, tells me that the phone has  everything in the proper playlist.
What an adventure! I'd pay money not to have it? Is there an alternative to iTunes (other than giving up on it and going to Spotify, as my daughter and friends have)?

  • I have a pc and recently bought an older mac pro - probably 2009 model.  I cannot seem to get my library from Itunes to open on the Mac like it does on the PC when I bought a new one I just downloaded Itunes and my whole library came up.

I can't seem to get my Itunes Library to come up on my Mac.  When I bought a new PC last year I just downloaded Itunes and all of my previous library came in but that isn't happening with my Mac Pro.  Is there an easy way to do that?

Have you copied your content from your other computer?

  • Iphoto 6 deleted my whole library

I just upgraded iphoto 6 and when i opened iphoto all my pictures had been deleted, how do i get all my pictures back on iphoto?
I have an ipod that has all the pictures from iphoto on there, but is there a way i can put pictures from my ipod to my iphoto on my computer?
    Please Help!!!!
    iMac G5 2.0GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    1. First off. go to your Pictures Folder. In there you'll see the iPhoto Library Folder. Inside that you will see a folder called Originals. Inside the Originals folder should be Roll folders with your pics inside.
Please confirm that your pics are safe and sound, then post back. How we proceed from here depends on that info.
    2. Try rebuilding the database: Hold down the apple and option (or alt) keys and launch iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild.

  • ITunes deleted my entire library with no warning! :(

It just went one day with no explanation. I had music I have uploaded from my CD collection, as well as stuff previously purchased via amazon mp3 and Zune. One day, EVERYTHING disappeared. All my carefully planned play lists were gone, and only the stuff I had purchased from iTunes remained only as a file i had to download from the iCloud? I do not have an icloud account, as I dont yet own an apple device... weird.  I have no idea what happened but its looking like I'm going to have to spend several evenings putting all the music back on from the CD's, looking for the other tracks on my hard drive, and recreating and filling my playlists (only for it to happen again?!). The tracks I had purchased via iTunes had been uploaded to iCloud but had been wiped from my hard drive and iTunes! I managed to re-download the purchased stuff (one by one which was a slow, laborious task) but it beats me how it did this without me telling it to and why?! iTunes, why are you treating people like this?! Anyone have any idea how to stop this from happening again?! If not, I may have to find a different music provider.

Although your iTunes Library display is blank, your song files are probably still on your hard drive.
Have a look at this article in the Apple Knowledge Base for some ideas on how to find them, changing file extensions in the search as is necessary (i.e. .mp3 or .m4a.)
If you find the files, then something is more than likely amiss with your iTunes Library files which are needed for iTunes to know the contents of Music Library and where the files that make it up are located.
If you don't have a back-up copy of the iTunes library files, you will have to make use of this article in the Apple Knowledge Base. Although the article refers to iTunes 6, it is also applicable to iTunes 7.
A few points to pay close attention to:
Step 1: Quit iTunes and, to err on the side of caution, wait one minute before proceeding.
Step 4: you are dragging the iTunes Library.itl file - you can leave iTunes Music Library.xml alone.
Step 8: you will be renaming the file iTunes Library yyyy-mm-dd.itl to iTunes Library.itl.
Note that this method will restore your iTunes Library to the state it was in when you upgraded to v.7. But any changes made since then (eg. songs/playlists added or changes in playcounts or comments), will not be included in the restoration.
Presumably though, that will be an improvement over your current situation. And, if necessary, we can deal with any newer songs later.
And one final point: If you've use this method to restore your library, make sure you create a new back-up copy of the .itl file so you're all set to repeat the procedure if the library ever disappears again.

  • ITunes Deleting movies from library

When you delete a movie from iTunes and tell iTunes to move it into the trash, it doesn't. The file doesn't get deleted until you restart you computer.
Looking through the folder systems. The files chosen to be deleted are gone, but the trash shows empty and the available hard disk space hasn't changed in response to them being deleted.
Maybe a trash similar to that of iPhoto should be introduced so you have a trash within itunes.

When I delete things from iTunes they do wind up in the regular trash, sometimes you need to wait a minute (it looks empty briefly) but that is where they do go so you can undelete them if you want.

  • Itunes deleted music and changed accounts

My itunes deleted my entire library of music, photos, videos etc. and when I attempted to sync with ipod to restore music it states that my ipod is synced with another itunes and wants to delete my ipod. The only thing that I can think of that may have caused this, is someone charged their Iphone with my computer, however it was not allowed to sync with my computer. lease tell me how I can recover my music and sync my Ipod with my Itunes without deleting all my music, photos, videos etc thats already on my ipod?

You can control what is synced from your library to your iDevice very easily.  When the device is connected, selected in the sidebar in iTunes (press Ctrl-S to enable the sidebar if you don't see it) then click on the Music tab.  This gives a range of options from copying the whole library to restricting the sync operation to copy specific songs, albums, artists, or playlists.  I find the last of these most useful, so that I can have one or more playlists that I can update so that their contents are synced the next time I connect a specific iDevice,
On your second issue, you should be aware that - unless you make some configuration changes:
each Windows user account on a PC has a separate iTunes library
any iDevice can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time - and when it detects a different library it'll remove any previously loaded media as part of the sync operation
Therefore, when you created a new Windows user you also created a new iTunes library, and even though you copied some content over your iPhone recognized the "user 2" library as new.  Unless you want to reconfigure your PC to share library content between different user accounts (and though this can be done, its the whole library that's shared, not parts of it) your best bet is to switch back to the original user account and learn how better to control what is selected when you sync your iPhone.
If you see that there is:
music missing from your iTunes library that you think should be there, and/or
music on your iPhone that isn't in the library on the PC
report back - there are ways to address both situations.
