ITunes deletes symlinked folder on Album Artist rename

Hello community,
I experience a very strange behavior of iTunes in combination with Symlinked folders. I use Windows 7 and my folder structure is listed below. I have a Laptop with a 256GB SSD and instead DVD-Drive a 640GB SATA drive.
Drive layout:
C: System (Windows Drive)
D: UserProfile (also symlinked to D:\Username
E: Media
My iTunes DB is about 170GB large including media of all kind. I spread the iTunes Media subfolders among several drive, because I want iTunes to start up very fast, but playing music and syncing my iPhone would not benefit from the fast SSD Drive so I don't want to waste the valuable fast space.
Now when I change the Album Artist of an album iTunes kills/deletes my Music symlink folder after completing the first rename and show the rest of the album as missing files (with the ! in front)
I have discovered that this only happens when iTunes tries to rename/move folders like it does if the Album artist is changed.
I have already tried restricting the permission to the symlinked folder to read even with deny write permissions, but it manages to delete the folder everytime.
I have used a folder junction instead also. All without joy.
The owner of the folder is the Administrators group which my user is a member of. There are several reason I cannot work a a regular user and I do not want to change that.
So did anyone experience this and knows why this is the case? I would be glad to know. Thanks for everybody investing a thought
Sorry for this text monster, but this really bugs me.
Best regards Bruce
P.S. Maybe Apple will here my whining and look into this behavior also.

Hi, welcome to Apple Discussions.
iTunes and symlinks don't play nicely... They work OK as long as iTunes is only reading data but get all confused when iTunes tries to write back. I recommend you just put the whole library on a drive big enough to hold it all in one go.

  • How do I stop iTunes from automatically sorting by Album Artist?  Driving me crazy.

How do I stop iTunes from automatically sorting by Album Artist?  Driving me crazy.
I listen to primarily classical music
All of my music was very deliberatley titled by composers "Last Name, First Name" as the artist.
iTunes is changing it to the Album Artist.  I have to go in and delete that information - AND THEN IT LATER REVERTS IT BACK!!!
Hours have been wasted and I am feeling so ticked.
    Any help?

    Purchased or ripped media?
If these are ripped mp3s then another possibility is multiple embedded tags. iTunes works best with a single ID3v2.3 tag. Some software creates both an ID3v1.0 and IDv2.x tag. With multiple tags it is not certain which iTunes reads or which it updates, and any device may choose differently. Once songs have the correct info. in iTunes you can use Convert ID3 Tags... None several times, then Convert ID3 Tags... v2.3. The process removes any embedded art but otherwise preserves the data that iTunes knows. You could use my script CreateFolderArt before and after to save and then restore the artwork.
In the long run you may be better off populating Album Artist properly with a copy of whatever is currently in Artist. My script CopyArtistToAlbumArtist can do this effectively.

  • CD imported to wrong folder organization Album/Artist instead of Artist/Alb

I imported (ripped) a CD and the folder convention iTunes created in my music library was like this:
    AlbumName/ArtistName
    instead of
    ArtistName/AlbumName
How could this happen. I have ripped hundreds of CD's and this is the first time it has happened. I am letting iTuned organize my files.
    Any clues?
    Thanks!

Actually I know exactlty what bae77345 is referring to, because I am running into the same problem. Thus my search in the forums.
Usually Ive had no problem in importing a song into iTunes, and changing the song IN iTunes to read as follows.
Name of Song: DAYS `EUREKA OPENING MIX`
    Artist: Anime
Album : Eureka seveN OST 1
    Album artist: FLOW
And the Windown path would look like this
    C:\Documents and Settings\Varxtis\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\Anime\Eureka seveN OST 1\1-01 DAYS `EUREKA OPENING MIX`.mp3
    Notice It goes Artist>Album>Song Title
Album Artist would not even be part of the path, which is exactly what I want.
    but now it shows
    C:\Documents and Settings\Varxtis\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music\FLOW\Eureka seveN OST 1\1-01 DAYS `EUREKA OPENING MIX`.mp3
Which goes AlbumArtist>Album>Song Title. it doesn't even include the artist as part of the path. How annoying.
It makes a HUGE difference to me because I need everything in "iTunes Music" library in windows to be pathed as Artist>Album: Song Title. I use a different MP3 Player so, it's almost impossible to have half one way (those that have albumartist) and half another (those that don't) BTW, Sorry apple. . .no Offense. I've had and loved an iPod. . . but it died and I got this as a gift.
I never changed any settings, and quite honestly it's been about a month since I had to update my MP3 player music (thus noticing the problem). So, there HAS to be a reason for it to change. And more importantly, a way to change it back.

  • Itunes 11 Book author and Album artist sort problems

(I've changed the name here, to protect the innocent and avoid comments about my taste. I shall call him 'Fred Anydude' )
I have an ebook by 'Fred Anydude'. He appears in book view under the [Authors section] in the right place i.e. with those Authors whose last name begins with 'A', (because the sort artist field has been set up as 'Anydude, Fred'.)
Then I acquire a music album, also by Fred Anydude (Hey, what can I say, he's talented). The problem is in the music view in the Artist section I expect Fred Anydude, to appear with the other artists beginning with F (as is the convention for music artist sort order), but he doesnt. He's appears with the A's again. The sort artist is blank in the case of the music album and its songs. So I set up the sort artist for the album and its tracks as Fred Anydude. I switch views, to give the opportunity for a refresh, I even restart itunes - Fred Anydude is still being sorted according to his book view sort artist despite what I've set up for his music: Still appearing with the A's
But to confuse matters, under Album view with the Album view sort order set to 'by Artist', the album does appear along with other artists beginning with F.
To make matters worse if I do a search for Fred Anydude, I only get shown the book in the results. The music doesn't even appear.
    Is there a fix?

I suppose a better way to differentiate between album artist and artist is to say Track Artist.

  • Itunes not grouping the same album artist together

I have had a quick search but not found anyone talking about this issue, apologies if it has been mentioned before.
I have a number of albums that are mixed by DJs. I have set it up so the artists in each album reflect each individual song and the "album artist" is the name of the DJ. I have selected compliation and assigned an album cover. This works fine and each album is grouped together as one album as it should be. The problem is that iTunes doesn't seem to want to arrange these albums in the order of the album artist (ie. the DJ who mixed it).
If I order by "Album by artist" all these albums are placed at the end of the list and ordered by album name and not album artist. If I add the "album artist" category to the display and arrange by this, the albums get split up into individual songs - which is even worse!
Is there a way to get iTunes to sort these albums so they remain together as each album and are also arranged in order of the "album artist" so that eg. All albums mixed by DJ X appear first, followed by those mixed by DJ Y and finally those mixed by DJ Z?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Grouping podcasts
A podcast series will split up in this way when its feed is moved to a new URL. Merging the series requires editing all the older episodes so that they appear to have come from the current feed. Download and install Mp3Tag (not sure of a Mac equivalent offhand). Use it to explore the Extended tags of podcasts from the same series. PODCASTURL (formerly ITUNESPODCASTURL) is used to link different podcasts from the same subscription (as opposed to fields like Album & Album Artist etc.) and PODCASTID (formerly ITUNESPODCASTID) determines the order. Everything else seems to be optional. Backup your files, tweak a few a tags then play each track briefly in turn. If iTunes still fails to notice the updated tags try my script UpdateTagInfo (Win).
As far as I'm aware the order is determined by the PODCASTID, but if you need/want to modify the Release Date then in MP3Tag/Extended Tags it corresponds to RELEASETIME in the format yyyy-mm-ddThh:mm:ssZ, e.g. 2008-02-20T09:10:52Z

  • "Sort Artist" does not work on iPod / How to sort by album artist

I have many albums in my music collection that contain songs by different artists. In iTunes, I have set all these songs to the same "Sort Artist" so that they all appear under the same artist's name (the album artist's name).
However, when I sync my iPod, the "Sort Artist" settings don't carry over. For example, a compilation album with 10 songs by 10 different artists would show up under one single artist in iTunes (per my sort artist settings), but on the iPod the songs show up under 10 different artists. Is there any way to fix this problem? I basically want to sort my music by album artist, instead of just the artist.
The strange part is when I browse my iPod on my computer, the compilation albums are properly sorted under one artist, but it's still wrong when I browse on the iPod itself.

It could be that you have inadvertently imported these CDs into iTunes as part of a compilation. If so, the artists won't show in the artists menu on the iPod.
To check, highlight the tracks on one of the offending artists CDs in iTunes, right click and select "get info". This brings up a multiple song info window, and from there you can check if you have 'yes' in the box marked "part of a compilation".
If you have, select 'no' instead and click 'ok'. Do this with any CD that has this issue. This will alter the info in iTunes, and you should then connect your iPod and synchronize the changes.
The problem arises because the information contained on the Gracenote CD Data Base (where iTunes gets all it's album/artist/track info from), is sometimes incorrect. It can show CDs as compilations when in fact they are not.
You should also check that the songs have album name info in their ID tags.
See: Some songs don't show under artist on my iPod.
Once you add a second album name for that artist even for a single song, ALL the rest of the songs should now show up under that artist, even those without album names.
Providing the spelling for the artists is exactly the same of course.

  • Anyway to turn off 'album artist' shown in library list?

Used to be, only the 'Artist' was shown in the library list view. which is exactly what I want. Now, both the 'Artist' and the 'Album Artist' show up in the library list view, which I hate. I don't see a switch anywhere, but I thought I'd ask...anyone know a way to get JUST the 'Artist' to display?
I really wish if Apple was going to change this stuff that they at least give us ways to control them.

that will turn it off in the songlist,
That will turn it off wherever you are viewing.
Select the library then iTunes menu View > uncheck *Use Album Artists*

  • I recently moved my itunes library. Itunes deleted a lot of artist and album info and album art. Now it won't let me edit the info to correct it. Any advice on to correct this?

I recently bought a new Asus laptop and moved my itunes to it. All of my files are stored on an external hard drive. In the process of importing my files into itunes on the new laptop, some artist and album info has been deleted. A lot of album art is missing as well. I attempted to correct the missing info, but now itunes won't let me edit any track, artist or album info. Any idea what the problem is and how I can fix it? Thanks.

If you haven't got a valid credit card then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they can cancel the gift or take what you owe them from your balance: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

    Hi
-I have organized all my songs in iTunes ,deleted unwanted songs and updated the album artwork but it has not changed them in my iTunes media folder location in my C Drive.
How do I update it there so it is the same as my iTunes now so i can back it all up?
    Thankyou.

I solved my problem. Here's how:
    1. Right click iTunes and click properties from the "Windows 8 Desktop" (or if you want to call it the 7 desktop thats fine too)
    2. Select the compatibility tab.
    3. Set compatibility mode to Windows 7 and click apply.
    4. Open iTunes, sign into iTunes store, Turn on iTunes Match, Add your computer.
    5. Close Program
    6. Restart Computer

  • ITunes 7 deleted "Downloads" folder of music from iTunes and iPod

In iTunes 6 I had iTunes point towards "My Music" folder in windows for my library.
One of the folders in "My Music" was called "Downloads".
NB: the music in "Downloads" is NOT my music downloaded from the iTunes Music Store... it isn't copy protected etc...
Upon upgrading to iTunes 7, i got !'s next to all my 'downloads' music.
I checked the folder and non of the music was there... all completely gone.
I do have a back up of this music, so not all is lost, but the backup is at home and I won't be able to get it for a few weeks.
So in the mean time, I plugged my iPod in, hoping to copy the downloads music off it to use until i could get my backup.
When i plugged my ipod in I got that nice new overview screen of whats on your ipod and it told me there was an update available. Ok thats cool, I'll download it an install it later (so i chose that option...)
As soon as I had done this, the iPod started updating itself and poof... all the downloads are gone of the iPod!!
Ive never had this happen before, usually if there is music on the ipod that isn't in itunes it just leaves it in there and syncs what is in my library.
I then went back to the Downloads folder in My Music to do some investigating. It turns out there were some itunes related files in there. What! iTunes deleted my "Downloads" folder, and replaced it with its own one? Grr...
Unfortunately i didn't write down what those files are, but I believe they were the files for the iPod update.
The update of my ipod actually failed and i can't get it to work... and since that has happened, the downloads folder isn't even there at all anymore. My guess would be that if i could get itunes to do the update again, the folder would reappear with those files again.

HERE IS A way too long diplomatic rant:
This is my third post on this subject. This is a real problem. And it strongly appears (based on what I've been reading from others, plus my own experience) that the new iTunes is the culprit.
But this problems is not limited to a folder named 'Downloads'.[/b.] ITunes, somehow, and for some reason, will delete entire album folders of music in the default 'Music' directory.
Here's what happened to me. Mind you, this involves music I converted to MP3's from CD's I own. I buy about ten-twenty CD's a month, so this is not some Orwellian nightmare affecting merely downloaded songs--purchased or otherwise.
Here is a typical example of what's happening:
    BEFORE iTunes v7 was installed:
-An 'Artist' folder named 'A Perfect Circle' contained the following 'Album' folders: 'Mer De Noms', 'The Thirteenth Step', 'eMotive'
SHORTLY AFTER iTunes 7 (about a month or so ago):
-Perfect Circle folder contained only the eMotive album. The rest were gone: this means not in the trash. Not moved. No where on the HD. Simply zapped.
I've lost MP3 albums from purchased CD's from Bob Marley, Led Zeppellin, Bjork, etc. It has affected at least 50 artist folders. I rip entire albums that I buy: I'm not trying to pass judgement though. I just want the point to be driven home that this bug is big, and it's affecting people who have spent much time and energy legitimately converting their music collections.
Am I missing something? I know I'm not alone in this, but this bug doesn't seem to be getting the attention it deserves from Apple. This is a major screw up. HAS APPLE RELEASED A STATEMENT? Forgive me if it has. But I can't find it. Maybe it's right under my nose?
Anyway, I do have all my music backed up on CD's and DVD's where they can't be corrupted. And all those discs are copied and stored in a remote location, in case of fire. This might seem extreme, but when you've spent a year of your life converting hundreds of albums and tagging them meticulously, you don't take chances. The only problem with this backup method is that my backup is spread out over many, many read-only discs. Moving it back to my hard drive will be laborious.
Can someone tell me if Apple has addressed this? Because I don't want to use iTunes at all if it is going to delete files. And I DON'T care if this is some function I'm not aware of. Any software that would delete files, either mistakingly or through some helpful feature is bad software. Deleting files (w/o even sending it to the Trash!) is one function that ought not be automated, or performed by any application other than the OS itself, under direct control from the user. I've turned off the option that lets iTunes manage and 'organize' my music for me. I can do that myself, and I don't like some of the things it does.
I have a friend in the media, and I'm thinking about issuing a press-release on this bug if further research indicates this is a more pervasive problem that Apple is downplaying. Certainly they are aware of it, as others have written on it here and elsewhere.
Can someone from Apple please contact me? I want to know when it is safe to use this program again. This problem is real, and just because it hasn't affected everyone, doesn't mean it has affected someone.

  • Sort iTunes folder by album

I have a lot of music in an iTunes folder on a backup drive. I want to be able to sometimes take some of it and replace the existing music on my iPod. iTunes, however, has organized the music on the backup drive by artist. This is fine for most albums, but for some albums it just creates a mess. For instance, to load a Christmas album where each track is by a different artist, I would have to remember each artist’s name, and use that information to find and load each individual track separately. (This is an especially huge problem for classical albums, where different tracks commonly feature different artists.) Does anyone know a way to, maybe, organize the whole iTunes folder by album instead? Or shareware that does this? It would completely solve the problem.
I believe that for future albums I can save them as compilations and they will sort more usefully. But what’s the solution for albums that iTunes has already saved?
Sorry if this is an old topic.

    ahhh, that must be it!
i see that folder but don't know how stuff got in there.
how do i mark music to go there?
or do i have to drag it manually?
    sorry--i'm a little lost
    thank u!

  • Itunes Match remembers incorrect album artist

    Hi all,
I'm having an issue with Itunes Match with a particular CD that I imported which is a compilation from various artists.
After importing the CD, I noticed that on my Ipad and Iphone, the album was appearing as 16 separate albums rather than one compilation album.
I also noticed that the Album Artist name read "Compliation" (spelling mistake deliberate as that is what it was).
I am aware of the need to make sure that artist and album names are synced up, and the "This is a compilation" flag to be checked and all that stuff.
So, I changed the Album artist to "Various Artists".  However, when I go back into my devices (other than Windows Itunes), only a couple of them have changed to "Various Artists", and most of them still appear as "Compliation", but still as 16 separate albums even though all the data looks the same.
So to be clear, even when the data appears to be the same on the iphone (regardless whether it's the same as on Windows or not), it is NOT grouping them as one album - it's 16 albums with 1 track on each.
I have tried changing various meta data.  In fact I've pretty much changed every field.  When I change fields, the changes are coming through on the devices, except this "Compliation" which appears to be completely stuck.
I've even tried deleting the CD completely from Itunes and Icloud twice, changing all the metadata on the PC to remove all references to "Compliation" and reimporting, but it still somehow remembers the "Compliation" that I told it to delete from the Cloud.
I have also tried switching off Itunes Match on the devices and on again, but this also didn't make any difference.
I don't really understand how meta data that I've removed before I even import that CD, and previously told to be deleted from the cloud, is magically returning.
The only other thing I noticed is that each track has a different album art (some of which are wrong anyway), but even if I deleted all the album art from every track on that CD in Itunes, it still appeared in Ipad and Iphone.  Can different album art cause an album to be split into multiple albums?
Does anyone have any idea how to fix this issue?

    That happens sometimes:
    Try:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Unsync/delete all music and resync
To delete all music go to Settings>General>Usage>Storage>Music>Tap edit in upper right and then tap the minus sign by All Music
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup. See:
iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.

  • Issues with setting "Album Artist" in iTunes 9.2.5.1 on Windows 7

I googled this for a while but haven't been able to find this issues mentioned anywhere else yet. Here's what's happening: I am importing CDs to iTunes 9.2.1.5 on Windows 7 Pro (64 Bit) using MP3 Encoder > Higher Quality. All is well except for a few CDs where I'd like to set an overall Album Artist. Example: Tony Bennett's Duets: An American Classic. When importing the CD it shows up under "Various Artists" since "Artist" is always Tony Bennett plus whoever he sings with. To make sure the album shows up under Tony Bennett in the library I click on the album and set "Album Artist" to Tony Bennett. That, however results in changing the "Artist" field as well now so all fields say Tony Bennett, which shouldn't happen, "artists" should stay unchanged. I tried this with several albums and the behavior is always the same.
I also tried the back door by going into the actual folder of the album in Windows then change the MP3 details and populate "Album Artist" there for all tracks within the album. Once I re=open iTunes it registers the change only for the first track but not the rest. So I re-import the folder into iTunes and then it does take "Album Artist" and also leaves "Artist" unchanged but for some reason has now lots of numbers under "Comments". There seems to be a mismatch of the field attributes between iTunes and Windows for MP3 files (possibly other formats as well). Wondering if anyone else has observed this or if I am just missing some setting.

FYI iTunes handling of ID3v2.4 tags seems to have some issues as well... Translating genres into their numeric codes for one thing. I'd recommend sticking with v2.3.
I'm not exactly sure from your posts what you were seeing. Was the artist being changed in Get Info. after you'd set Album Artist, or was it changing elsewhere on screeen? iTunes 9(.1 I think) added an option *View > Column Browser > Use Album Artists*. Unfortunately this doesn't change the heading of the column so that you "see" it is now only listing album artists but that's what it does.
There is also an occasional issue with the current build in that sometimes changes to Album Artist or Sort Album Artist fail to be reflected properly in the column browser until iTunes is closed and reopened.

Basically I brought a album of the iTunes Store, Depzman - 2 Real, specifically, edited the album features, such as, artists and put the featuring artists, which before I edited it was placed in brackets at the end of the song title like most iTunes songs, but when i put it on my iPhone which is on manually handle music and videos, the artist which i removed from the song title do not appear, only the album artists, I have reset my iPhone completely using the delete all settings and content in the hope of it being the iPhones fault and it has not changed, urgh, what a waste of time / effort, now I have now gotten to the point of fed up cos I feel like I've tried everything, ive re-downloded them and done it all again, still nothing, so now I'm puzzled and don't understand why it wont appear the same on my iPhone as it does in my iTunes library, please can someone help me solve this pain in the ***, I'm OCD when it comes to music and if it doesn't appear the way it should i get annoyed / frustrated -.-
