ITunes didn't like I changed my songs to another Hard Drve

67 GB of organized songs by artist / Album just went to a big mess.
I had my library prefectly organized and I decided to move my song files to a bigger hard drive. I did and changed the media folder in preferences but iTunes didn't find the songs. I then added the songs again (removing first, then adding them again). iTunes didn't recognize the ids because almost all album names and song order was lost.
I'm talking 849 albums all messed up. I have most of them in my iPod, but I don't know if those ids will be read if I try to copy them from the ipod. I don't know what to do. Imagine go through all those songs and try to identify them one by one. This is crazy, really.
Can someone help me please?

Yes, itunes cannot handle this. The way itunes wants it done, is to use the file > library > organize > consolidate command to move to a new drive without losing the path to the files.
Changing that preference only affects FUTURE additions, by the way.

I don't understand. Are these WAV files?
If you still have the original (small) hard drive, switch the preferences back to that and start over. Use the consolidate command this time.

So, I have just about had it. For nine days now,  I have valiantly tried to move my library to an external drive. At first, I attempted to move it to my 2TB Time capsule. iTunes didn't like its new home though and moved home without telling me. So then there were two libraries. I meshed them back together reluctantly and iTunes in a silent revolt, absolutely refused to use its own 'Keep Library Organized' criteria and may as well have thrown my music against the wall. Seriously, my 5 year old nephew has his computer files better managed. Then I bought a 3TB Time Capsule and you may ask yourself why??? Well, iTunes doubled in size- although when I ran apps that are designed to find duplicate iTunes files, it deleted the music I actually bought from iTunes. So then I watched as iTunes got it back. How you ask; I run a MacBook Air, iMac and Mac mini in my house - as soon as one powered up it hit the net like a sailor on leave and re-downloaded it all without abandon. I tried to keep the libraries separate, no success there. I tried to keep them unified; iTunes response was to ask me if I wanted to join iTunes Match every time I logged on to my computer and on any computer - my iTunes match song number has been as high as 24,367 and as low as 11,112. And I can't simply refuse iTunes. No one refuses iTunes. Refusal to allow iTunes Match to run through all 24000 songs again was to revoke my rights to the songs that were once part of my library. If I took a long time to decide or was visibly impatient while iTunes did its little 3 hour scan it would arbitrarily decide that music I bought from iTunes was ineligible for iTunes Match. How could that possibly be??? I am missing music, or at least iTunes tells me so by showing me that lovely exclamation point. I have tried backing up my computer to do a full system restore and start all over. Time Capsule claims I have 979 GB of data and takes its sweet time to even back up one gig (about 18 minutes) even though I can transfer files to my Time Capsule at about 1 GB every 40 seconds. I guess though performing back-ups are somewhat like government jobs; it will get done, when it gets done. The back up requirement of 979 GB is surprising though, my Mac claims that I currently occupy just about 25% of my 2TB drive. The discrepancy, who knows, but I think the solution lies somewhere in iTunes. But maybe iPhoto. But that is for another time.

After admittedly only a quick read the one thing you don't say is how you are trying to make this move.  Most people with moving library issues do it the wrong way.  Plenty of web sites tell you how to do it the wrong way.
If the iTunes application is started before the drive with the library is fully mounted and awake iTunes will revert back to the internal drive.

My slide presentation (with songs) is done. How can I change one song from another?

Do you still have your Aperture Slideshow project? Then open the slideshow and select the one of the green audio file clips in the film strip that you want to replace. Press the "delete" key and drag another audio file from the Media Browser directly onto the slide, where the sound should start.

  • How do I save my iTune songs to another hard drive?

I have purchased 418 iTune songs over the years and want to save them to another hard drive in case my computer crashes.
I have tried to do that with my HP Simple Save external hard drive and the songs show up as gibberish.
I see lots of blogs on the internet of people with the same problem.  Surely after having invested in these songs, there
should be a way to make sure they are safe.  HELP!  I am desperate.  Try getting help directly from Apple support.....

  • My old PC died but hard drive is still functional. Purchased new PC and downloaded latest iTunes but attempts to transfer folder with songs from old hard disk to new computer failed. Only 20 of approx 300 songs transferred ??

My old PC died but the hard drive is still functional and accessible using a USB extraction device. I purchased a new PC and downloaded the latest iTunes but attempts to transfer the iTunes folder with songs from the old hard drive to my new computer failed. Only 20 of approx 300 songs transferred. All other non music file transfers (WORD, EXCEL, etc) from the old hard drive to the new computer were successful. Is this a file type issue? Any thoughts??  THANKS!

  • I messed up my iTunes folder! How do I transfer it to another hard drive?

Hi, my "C" hard drive is almost full, so I decided I would transfer my "My Music" folder to another internal hard drive I have installed in my computer (the "G" drive). This folder takes up 4.59 GB of space. I use Windows XP Home, SP3, along with iTunes 9.0.2.25 with an old iPod Nano 4 GB.
So I made sure iTunes was closed and I copied the folder. Before I copied it, I checked, and inside the iTunes folder was:
    1) iTunes Music folder (inside has all the artists I have listed alphabetically)
    2) Previous iTunes Libraries folder
    3) iTunes Library Extras.itdb
    4) iTunes Library Genius.itdb
    5) iTunes Library.itl
    6) iTunes Music Library.xml
    7) sentinel
Now I could be wrong about the above, but I know the iTunes Music folder was definitely there (since I checked it to find out where my songs were stored).
So after I copied the folder, I opened iTunes and tried to change the directory so iTunes could find my songs, via "Preferences" > "Advanced" tab (in doing this, I noticed the old choice was in the C drive pointing to an "iTunes Media" folder.) So I selected "browse" and pointed it to the "iTunes Music" folder in the G drive and then hit "change", but iTunes did not find my music, even though it was right there! I closed iTunes and re-opened it, but it still could not find the music!
So then I went back to the C drive and went into the old "My Music" folder, which I did not want to delete until I was sure I had made the transfer ok. Much to my surprise, I found new files which magically appeared there after I opened iTunes!
    I found these:
    1) iTunes Media folder
    with these subfolders:
    1) Movies folder (I don't have any movies for iTunes)
    2) Automatically Add to iTunes folder
    3) .iTunes Preferences.plist
and maybe an empty iTunes "Music" folder.
This left my confused. So I tried to rearrange everything back in the C drive like it originally was, and hit "reset" under iTunes "Preferences" > "Advanced" and the music seems to be playing ok now...but I am not sure what damage has been done.
    Here are my questions:
    1) Why did an "iTunes Media" folder magically appear in the old C drive after I opened iTunes?
    2) What belongs where now? What hierarchy of iTunes folders and files should I use in my new G drive?
    3) How do I get iTunes to recognize where my music has been transferred to?
    Thanks so much!
    Stephanie

Oh, and I finally did fix everything!
Basically, when I did that "Consolidate" function, iTunes made doubles of all my songs in the Media folder, and also in my music library list on the top left of my iTunes control panel!!!
And the problem wasI was not looking at my music library list in the top left when I was syncing my iPod or trying to find the new paths for those 40 broken files; but rather, I was looking at the "Purchase" playlist, or whatever that is called, which records all my purchases! I never knew I had another master list called "music library" (yop left)!! I thought "Purchases" was my master list of songs. Duh!
So I started dragging songs from "Purchase" to the "Recycle" bin (so I could re-drag them back to iTunes--found this method on a google search), like someone advised, to fix my iPod sync problem. But I noticed when I was doing that, they were not appearing in my recycle bin, but just disappearing like they would do when you delete a song from one of your custom playlists, like "On-the-Go" or whatever. So that made me think there is another master list somewhere else (not "purchases"), and I found it on the top left of iTunes, the music library! There I found out that every song, except the one I didn't buy from Apple, was duplicated, and the second of each pair could not be found (had a gray exclamation point next to it)! So I deleted all those duplicates...took forever! And then when I synced my iPod, everything was perfect!
And, to my surprise, even though iTunes said it could not sync those 100 songs I referenced a few posts ago (Posted: Dec 12, 2009 9:03 PM) due to broken links, that was actually a lie!!!! After the iPod restore and new failed sync, I listed to my iPod, and found those missing 100 songs!!! I cannot believe iTunes lied to me!!!
Also, why isn't there a command listed to check all songs (this is a rhetorical question)! I have 900, and it would have taken forever to manually check them. I found out you have to hold "control" (via a google search) but this is not listed as an option under any of the iTunes menus!
Finally, that article you gave me was excellent! the one thing that would make it better is they should tell you what exactly to name your new folder or folders when you move them to a new hard drive, for dummies like me (do you call them "My Music" or "iTunes Media" or "Music" or "itunes Music", etc., especially when your old folder was stilled called "iTunes Music" and not "iTunes Media". This caused some problems yesterday for me, but overall I was ok!

  • ITunes didn't completely download my songs and now it says itunes has not been correctly localized for this language. Please use english version. What is this?

iTunes didn't completely download all my songs. I updated iTunes and now this message appears "iTunes has not been correctly localized for this language. Please use the english version." The only option I have at this point is to close it down because I can't access iTunes because this message won't allow me to get in.

Let's try a repair install of iTunes.
    Restart the PC first.
If you're using Vista or 7, now head into your Uninstall a program control panel, select "iTunes" and then click "Repair".
If you're using XP, head into your Add or Remove Programs control panel, select "iTunes", and click "Change". Select "Repair" and click "Next" as per the following screenshot:
Can you launch your iTunes now?

  • Album art changing with song changes

    Hi,
I have a question that seems like there should be and easy fix for. When Im playing iTunes, the album artowrk never changes, from song to song, it only displays the album artwork for the song I first chose when I started playing iTunes. Is there a setting I have set wrong?
    Thanks

It doesn't change even when iTunes moves on to a new album? If you're talking about the artwork in the artwork pane in the lower left corner, make sure it's set to "Now Playing" and not "Selected Item". If it's in Coverflow, I'm not sure what to tell you.

  • I cannot access Firefox (didn't like new version, so did System Restore to go back to 3.6.15).

I'm using a laptop with Windows XP. I updated to newest version of Firefox, but really didn't like some changes it made, especially to my Gmail. So I did a System Restore. Since then I have not been able to access Firefox, although I've tried 4 different ways several times--it just won't come up on the screen, so I've had to use Internet Explorer. I went to the control panel (Add or Remove Program), and found that I still have version 3.6.15, and it even says that I last used it today, even though it never came up on the screen. I hope that someone can help me with this problem. I. E. is slow!

Your past purchases are not on the computer.   By choosing download all, those purchases will download to the computer.
Once authorized to your iTunes account you can control the computer.
When syncing the iPad the first time you will get the warning " this iPad is synced with another computer, syncing will erase all contents and replace with the contents of this computer"
Say yes, this is what you wan to do.

  • ITunes won't let me change song information and hangs up...

Using an 2010 iMac and iTunes 11.x I tried to change some song information as I did it for several years and iTunes versions.
Now it seems to be an installation error and the program hangs up if I try to open the information pop up.
The music plays on but nothing else can be done as to quit iTunes (hard quit).
A reinstallation doesn't had any impact, but I was not able to deinstall iTunes first (error message: ...this program is part of OS X and cannot be deleted...)
I also checked the hard disk and the right management, everything seems to be fine.
Has anybody an idea how to get iTunes de- and reinstalled completely?
I did not find an guide for that.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey there skipperchong,
The other file that it could be is the iTunes library file.. The problem is. This containes all of your playlists, file locations, library info and various other things.
So we cant simply remove it and let the OS write a new fresh one like the other file.
What you would have to do is remove your entire library of itunes, delete the library file and reimport your music again, which will, in turn delete your playlists.
Are you on a Windows computer or a Mac?

  • I made changes to songs on my iPod 4G through iTunes, but the changes do not show up on my iPod.What is the problem?

I have the iTunes program for Windows. Last night I upgraded my 4th generation iPod touch to the ios 5 software, which wiped out all my music. I put some of the music back on my ipod after it was restored, but then I tried changing the song information under the 'get info' option. The changes saved and registered in itunes, but no matter what I do, the changes won't appear on my iPod's music library. Any suggestions?

Now title changes are showing up on my iPod, but not artist and album changes
