ITunes does not recognise most (but not all) of my iOS devices

Hi,
Recently I have discovered I'm unable to sync a number of my devices to iTunes on my PC.
These include:
a first generation iPad
an iPhone 4S (my wife's)
an ipod touch (generation unknown, 64GB, quite old).
I *can* sync my iphone though (also a 4S).
All the above devices used to sync fine, although they probably haven't been synced for a number of weeks.
I'm running Windows 7.
I've tried:
* Updating the software. iTunes and the device OSs were up-to-date.
* Updating USB driver software
* 3 different connection cables
* Different USB ports. Some are connected straight to the motherboard, others on the front of the PC via a more circuitous route. None are via an external hub
* All devices are suitably charged
* Disabling any software that might cause conflict - so most things in the Startup and Services section of the System Configuration/ms config
* rebooting multiple times
* microsoft's "hardware fix it" (http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Tips-for-solving-problems-with- USB-devices)
Aside:
I spent a while wondering if the iPhone which did sync was syncing wirelessly, and doing this when I connected it via the USB cable as this would provide power to enable this to happen. This isn't the case as it will still sync if I disable the WIFI on the device - or if I disable the WIFI in my router. It isn't that.
I have a clue though.
Each of the devices is recognised in Windows, and can be viewed as if it were a camera or other storage device to allow photos to be removed. Each device has a name that you give it:
"Dave's iphone" for example.
The iPhone that DOES sync is reported in windows using this alias - "Dave's iPhone".
Each device that does not sync is reported in windown using the generic "Apple iPhone" or "Apple iPad" not the alias I have assigned to it.
Anyone got any suggestions? I'm all out of ideas.
Phil.

Here's an update for those with a similar issue. I took the advice from another post and downloaded the iTunes DMG file. Installed it, more or less, over the auto-updated version, and it now works.
A little something-something went hooy in the auto update of iTunes I guess.

  • When I connect my ipad or ipod to the computer, itunes does not show them as a "device".

    When I connect my ipad or ipod to the computer, itunes does not show them as a "device", however my computer can see they are connected. so it seems to be a problem with itunes. i have tried re-installing itunes and it still doesnt work.
    My Iphone does show as a device when connecteing wirelessly.
    Its not a problem with the driver becasue the computer can see the devices, so its a problem in itunes.

    Hello mimward,
    It sounds like Windows can see your devices, but iTunes is not seeing them. I would use the troubleshooting in the following article named:

  • Itunes does not recognize my iphone 4 device

    I bought a new computer, tried to install itunes, after three different people tried to help me, i finally got itunes to install, but when I plug my iphone into my computer, itunes does not recognize the device.  I am trying to 1. upgrade my iphone soft ware to 10.5.3, utilize icloud, and perform basic functions of syncing my phone with my computer. Any help, anyone could provide would be appreciated.
    Tank you,

    If your iTunes is the latest version, restart your computer and reboot your iPhone. Press and hold the Home and Sleep buttons simultaneously ignoring the red slider until the Apple logo appears. Let go of the buttons and let the iPhone restart. See if that fixes your problem.

  • Itunes does not recognize any of my devices

    I connect my iPhone or iPad(s) and Itunes does not recognize they are there. I have Itunes latest version. My last backup I was able to do was back in January. I tried to delete and reload itunes and that does not help. My computer recognizes my devices are connected and I can back up my photots. Just Itunes fails to recognize they are connected. ALL my devices have the latest software.

  • New upgrade to 10.6.1.7 iTunes does not show my Wi-Fi devices.

    It worked great with iTunes 10.5. My iPhone and iPad wirelessly showed under devices in iTunes, now they don't. How do I get them back? I loved being able to drag and drop songs but now I have to plug the devices in. If I can't fix this, should I go back to 10.5 and how in the world do I do that? I'm running Windows XP.

    Update: I uninstallediTunes with this recent update (10.6.1.7) and installed iTunes 10.6.0 from the website. ALL is good.

  • Any reason why iTunes would not sync with my iOS device using USB cable?

    Hi there,
    what could be the reason if iTunes won't sync with my iOS 5 devices via USB? The devices are recognized in iTunes (I can see the devices there and all the content stored on these devices), but the sync does not work...
    BTW: I tried several different USB cables already...
    I am using Mac OS X Lion on a MacBook Pro Late 2011.
    Thanks
    Ralf

    I can't recommend any learning resources, especially since what you are going to be doing likely falls under the category of basic untutorialed coding.
    When I decided to take the plunge I had a project in hand that I had just created in AS2, and what I did was restart the project using AS3, tackling each coding element as it came up. One nice thing about AS3 is that it is much better with pointing out coding errors--while cryptic at times, you get better at interpretting them with time--and when you don't get any, chances are you are on the right track.  So you try something and if it flies, great, and if an error message pops up, you pursue solving the error.
    In most cases, the Flash help documents are a sufficient reference, but in other cases I would rely on Google.  Just as a for instance, you mention using key listeners... That would be something I would have serach Google using "AS3 key listener", and I'm willing to bet you'd find something to get you over the hump.  Sometimes it helps to add "tutorial" to the end of a search string... it can help weed out all the others that have psotings on forums that are offering problems rather than solutions.

  • ITunes will not update Apps on iOS devices

    I recently purchased a new MacBook Pro.  I had all of my apps transferred to iTunes on the new computer.  Everything worked fine except iTunes would not update the apps on my iOS devices.
    Apple support spent several hours attempting to fix my problem to no avail.  I discovered the problem by accident.
    When I selected "Automatically install new apps while syncing" iTunes asked me to authorize an old iTunes account I had decomissioned a couple of years ago and had merged it into all of my devices.  iTunes in the new computer was still tracking the old account.  After selecting "do not authorize" for the old account, iTunes on my Mac synced the apps just fine.
    I hope this helps someone having the same problem.

    Thanks for the help. I think it works but only after new reload the data. That's not good when one is without Wifi. Sorry my english is not so good

  • My iTunes does not see the new ios 5 update on my ipod touch 3rd generation

    hello i tried to seach for an update for ios 5 or 4.3 but my iTunes cant find it. It just sayes ur current version is 4.2.1

    You just think you have a 3rd gen..
    What some people don't know is that when Apple released Model MC086LL it was sold as a 8GB 3rd generation unit by some retailers. It really had the same guts as the 2nd generation model MB528LL with upgraded software. ALL 8GB "3rd generation" iPod Touch serial numbers pull up in the apple support system as a 2nd generation unit. 2nd generation units are not able to upgrade to ios5, therefore your last update will be 4.21.

  • My iTunes installation via Windows 7 does not install the Apple Mobile Device Support file

    I have followed several suggestions to resolve the problem caused because of my update of iTunes does not install the Apple Mobile Device Support folder, thus making it impossible for me to sync my iPhone 4S to my desktop version of iTunes. I have tried to install the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi file and it almost completes the installation before "rolling back" the entire process and giving me a message that there was a problem with the installation. Has anyone been able to solve this problem. I use Windows 7. I have seem some :"solutions" that seem to work for some people, but not for me, and evidently not for many others? Finally, would it matter if I installed Safari on my desktop and tried to install iTunes using Safari?

    Let's try a standalone Apple Mobile Device Support install. It still might not install, but fingers crossed any error messages will give us a better idea of the underlying cause of why it's not installing under normal conditions.
    Download and save a copy of the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe) installer file to your hard drive:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
    Download and install the free trial version of WinRAR:
    http://www.rarlab.com/
    Right-click the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64setup.exe), and select "Extract to iTunesSetup" (or "Extract to iTunes64Setup"). WinRAR will expand the contents of the file into a folder called "iTunesSetup" (or "iTunes64Setup").
    Go into the folder and doubleclick the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi (or AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi) to do a standalone AMDS install.
    (If it offers you the choice to remove or repair, choose "Remove", and if the uninstall goes through successfully, see if you can reinstall by doubleclicking the AppleMobileDeviceSupport.msi again.)
    Does it install (or uninstall and then reinstall) properly for you? If so, can you get a normal iTunes install to go through properly now?
    If instead you get an error message during the install (or uninstall), let us know what it says. (Precise text, please.)
