Itunes does not recognize CD in drive

I was able to download Itunes7 for my PC (Windows XP), but 1st:
i cannot progress from the first screen where Itunes store is located. I want to just close out of the Itunes store but cannot.
2nd:
When I place a cd in the drive the window comes up which states, "Accessing Gracenote CDDB", then that dialog box disappears and the cd is nowhere to be found within Itunes. The option to even search for Cd track names is not allowed. It is almost as if the computer system is blocking something from recognizing the CD.It does not recognize the CD and therefore i cannot import the cd to my Ipod.
HELP!!!!!

okay. first make sure that both iTunes and iTunesHelper are being allowed access to the internet in the Windows firewall. see:
How to enable iTunes in the Windows XP Firewall
and if you have Norton Internet Security running, make sure it's allowing iTunes and iTunesHelper too. see:
iTunes cannot connect to the Music Store or Shared Music after installing Norton Internet Security

  • Itunes does not recognize external hard drive

I am a dj and I have a couple of external hard drives to back up my music. Here's what happened last night and things haven't been the same since. Last night I have daisychained one exteranl hard drive with my new xternal that has a copy of all my music on it. I changed the folder to my new hard drive the other day and it was working fine. Well, last night I was working on updating some music and I didn't realize that my iBook G4 laptop wasn't plugged in so the screen went dark. I panic a bit and power downed my two hard drives without dismounting them properly. When I realized it was just the power cord I plugged it back in and I thought everything was fine. Now this morning when I try to run off of only my new xternal almost all of my library is showing that it can't be found. Now, when I plugged in an old external and daisychained it with the new one it works fine. What do I need to do so that it recognizes only the new hard drive with everything on it. I tried changing the folder in the advanced tab and it still comes up unrecognized. Please help me I have tons of gigs coming up soon and I use my itunes as a reference tool.
    Thanks,

Thanks. Realized something though...on the old computer, Windows XP had a problem (R6034) that prevented iTunes from opening or upgrading.
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

My win8 pc hard drive failed.  After the hard drive was replaced, I copied iTunes Media backupfiles from external hard drive (Karen's Replicator backup software was used).  ITunes does not recognize these back up files even though the location is the same as cloud & recently burned music that does show- help!  The backup files consist of 34,000+ songs; almost all burned from my own CD collection.  I do have most of the songs on an ipod classic but hesitate to try to restore from that.  Can someone tell me how to get these 34,000 songs to show up in iTunes?  Thanks!!

This diagram shows how a typical iTunes library ought to be set out (click on it to enlarge)
The red outline highlights the media folder and its contents, the various subfolders are only created if that kind of content is in your library. The right-hand side shows the files that should be found in the iTunes library folder; sentinel is normally hidden so may not be visible. The core of your iTunes library is the file iTunes Library.itl, you need to restore this, the other library files and the Album Artwork folder, as well as the media folder, to restore your library.

iCloud Backup is for your iPad, not for your computer.
Whatever you bought from iTunes is yours forever and can be downloaded as many times as you want. This assumes what you purchased is still available in the Store.
Here is the procedure for your reference.
On a computer, launch iTunes. Click on iTunes Store on the left
On the right you will see this
"Sign in" using the Apple ID used to purchase your songs, then click on "Purchased" (with the orange blob)
On the summary page that appears select the tab "Not on This Computer" on the right.
On the list that appears, select what you want and then click the "Download" button.
Whatever you have that did not originate from iTunes will have to be obtained from whatever means you used to obtain it in the past.

  • ITunes does not recognize 5th Generation video iPod in WinXp

PROBLEM: 5G iPod not recognized in iTunes (shows as removable hard drive in My Computer) via USB on HP Pavilion Notebook running WinXP. Latest error states insufficient power to run hi speed USB device on this computer. HP support replies that installed USB should comply to 480 Mbps hi speed standard. Trying to connect iPod via firewire results in "iPod can not be connected with firewire" error. Have tried the following steps before reaching this point:
Description of iPod: 5G, 30 gig video iPod model MA002LL contains 1.2 gig data (282 songs, 4 videos, 0 pictures)
Action: 5G iPod worked fine until connected to download purchased music 3 weeks ago.
Result: iPod screen shows "Do not disconnect" iTunes does not recognize iPod.
Action: Reset iPod (iPod works fine when not connected to any computer).
    Result: same as above
Action: Recharged iPod overnight with wall outlet to confirm full charge.
    Result: same as above
Action: Tried to run iPod Updater but iPod was not recognized by Updater (it does recognize iPod Mini and 4G)
    Result: same as above
Action: Reinstalled latest version of iTunes.
    Result: same as above
Action: Reinstalled COM interface for IPod Service several times.
    Result: same as above
Action: Ran repair maintenance on iTunes (repair successful).
    Result: same as above
Action: Uninstalled iTunes and iPod software, deleted their folders and bin files and cleaned out Temp directory, disabled virus protection and disconnected from network. Ran Windows Installer Cleanup Utility. (Uninstall successful)

    Result: same as above
Action: Tried to connect by firewire
Result: Error this device cannot be connected by IEEEE use USB cable.
Action: Talked to HP support to confirm USB standards on Pavilion Notebook.
Result: USB should read all 3 standard data speeds up to hi speed 480 MBps
Action: Tried 5G iPod on 2 other PC desktops with WinXP with powered USB 2.0 ports
Result: iPod shows "Do not disconnect" iTunes does not recognize iPod and both computers respond with the following error (which is not received on the notebook) "insufficient power to run hi speed USB device on this computer" both Desktops are older than the Notebook and have older versions of USB 2.0.
Action: Tried it on my iMac G4 thinking I could reformat it. Mac understandably does not read it as a drive. I tried the following three connections:
    1) Firewire connection: iPod screen shows: firewire connection is not supported; 2) Powered USB port connection: drive is not recognized by Mac and iPod screen shows do not disconnect; 3) Unpowered USB port connection returns an error of "USB Low power notice" on Mac monitor and iPod screen shows menu but won't connect to Mac.
    QUESTIONS:
Has the 5G iPod reached a point where it now pulls too much power to be read by USB? Is HP not giving me correct specs regarding the performance of the Notebook's USB? Why can I update my iPods with firewire on my Mac but not the PC? Any suggestions regarding what I should try next?
    Thanks.
HP Pavilion dv notebook Windows XP

Solution was found: HP was encountering a conflict with a trial version of Symantec Security Center and Norton Anti-Virus causing an incomplete install of iTunes.
The following actions resolved the problem. Uninstalled both Symantec applications, uninstalled QuickTime 6*, installed QuickTime 7.1.3 (iTunes would not install successfully prior to this step, seems redundant but worked), installed iTunes 7.1 (with Quicktime 7.1.3 again), connected iPod 5G which was finally recognized, received error that iPod was currupted, restored iPod and is now working fine.
I hope that this helps someone else with similar video iPod problems.

Your device may not be recognized while in recovery mode. This can happen during an update or restore of your device. Typically when your device is in recovery mode, it will show the "Connect to iTunes" logo on its display. If iTunes does not recognize the device when in this state, try the following:
    Open the Device Manager:
Windows XP: Click Start > Run. In the resulting dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return.
Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click Start. In the dialog, type devmgmt.msc and press Return on the keyboard. If Windows needs your permission to continue, click "Continue".
Windows 8: Move the cursor to the upper right corner, click the magnifying glass, type devmgmt.msc, and press Return.
Click the plus icon (Windows XP and Vista) or the disclosure triangle () (for Windows 7 and 8) next to Imaging Devices, Other Devices, Portable Devices, and Universal Serial Bus Controllers to expand these sections.
Check these sections for one or more entries called Apple Mobile Device (Recovery Mode). These entries may or may not have exclamation marks on them similar to the following:

  • ITunes does not recognize iPod (3rd gen?) even after trying everything...

I have searched and not found this exact problem on any of the forum pages. My computer (PC) recognizes my iPod as an external USB drive. It is completely charged up (from the AC power). No error messages. Screen shows the "updating - do not disconnect symbol" constantly while docked but the pod does not show up in iTunes at all. I can get the main screen (menu) page by disconnecting the USB device through Windows, but when I try to select any of my data on the pod it shows nothing downloaded on the device. I've tried everything in the support section (most recent version of iTunes, checked that iPod service is running, reinstalled the COM interface for iPod service, deleted and reinstalled iTunes, etc. As a final resort, I "restored" the pod to factory settings using iPod Updater, but no joy...To say I'm unhappy is putting it mildly. Any suggestions before I jump out a window or something????

Message was edited by: Mark DiGiacomo

    hi sally,
see if this user tip by Yorkwill helps:
+In the end what works is to just force the drivers on what windows thinks is a camera, i.e. to ‘update’ the device to use the correct driver. There are some hints on how to do this already listed on this forum, but I’ll try to give some more detailed information:+
+1. First off you need to have iTunes installed and the ipod touch plugged in+
+and recognized as ‘something’ e.g. digital camera (it shouldn’t really+
+matter what it’s recognized as, but it needs to be found by windows).+
+2. Search for usbaapl in the C:\WINDOWS system folder:+
+o open windows explorer (e.g. Right-click Start and then click ‘explore’)+
+o right-click the WINDOWS folder and select ‘Search’).+
+o type in usbaapl and hit Search – try to ignore the dog!+
+You should find the driver info in a sub folder of+
    +C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE e.g. C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE\usbaapl_A65621D65F5B7507DD7B22331826547BDD2D206B+
+Remember that location (either leave the search box open or copy the folder+
    +name into note pad – you’ll need it later)+
    +If you don’t find usbaapl.sys, usbaapl.inf etc. then your drivers have not+
+been installed with the iTunes install and you’ll have to reinstall iTunes.+
    +3. Locate the ipod-camera device:+
+o Open the device manager, e.g. using Start > Control Panel >+
    +Performance and Maintenance > System > Hardware Tab > Device Manager+
+o Look for a device called ‘ipod’ - if your ipod shows up as+
+‘digital camera’ it will be under something like ‘imaging devices’.+
    +4. Update the driver:+
+o Right click the ‘ipod-camera’ in device manager and click on+
+‘Update Driver’ – the Hardware Update Wizard will open.+
+o Check the ‘Install from a list or specific location’ then click ‘Next’+
+o Check ‘Search for the best driver in these locations’. Un-check+
+‘Search removable media’ and check ‘Include this location in the search’.+
+In the text box below type (or better copy and paste) the folder+
+containing the ipod driver information found in step 1 (in the example+
    +above it was C:\WINDOWS\system32\DRVSTORE\usbaapl_A65621D65F5B7507DD7B22331826547BDD2D206B), +
    +then click Next.+
+You should now see something like ‘Apple ipod device driver’ or so. Continue+
+installing that device. Once the driver has been installed the ipod will come+
+to life and iTunes (if you have it open) will show it.+
