ITunes does not see music files in folders in external drive after crash

I put over 3000 music files on an external drive.  It was a laborious project to organize them so iTunes would recognize them and organize them.
Unhappily, my laptop crashed this morning and I had to restore the whole hard drive to a backup of 3 weeks ago.   Unfortunately this was before I did all this work.
Now iTunes only "sees" 1400 of the songs, yet when I examine the files usinig Windows explorer, they are all there.
How can I get iTunes to again "see" all the music files.
they are organized in a directory called iTunes, and all the subdirectories containing the mp3's are artist's names.
Many thanks!

Check the security permissions on the drive. See Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows.
Enable the menu bar if needed with CTRL+B.
Under Edit > Preferences > Advanced check that the media folder is set as you wish it to be, and also that the options for Keep... & Copy... are what you want. Uncheck copy if your media folder is elsewhere and you don't want to create copies when importing.
Use File > Add Folder to Library and select the folder that has you missing content. It should be added to the library.

  • 60gb iPod does not see music files on my external HD

I'm going nuts trying to figure out why my iBook does not see the music files on my external HD.
I have a 250gb external hard drive (that I put together with an enclosure and HD I bought from Tiger Direct). I have the hard drive hooked up to my G3 iBook via Fire Wire. The HD comes up on the desktop, but none of the files are seen. Now, when I take the same HD and hook it up to my Windows PC, all my music is there.
I really don't want to have my iPod hooked up to my PC. My G3 is too small to hold all the music. I need to have the external HD to handle all the music for my iPod.
How do I accomplish this on my G3?
    Thanks!
    iBook G3   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hyphen says:
[The] drive can be formatted as fat32 and be read/written by macs. He could also partition it, one partition as hfs+, the other as fat32. This can be done from disk utility.
The NTFS format (windows) has only read support for OS X.
How did s/he copy the music on the external drive? Was the music on his/her pc? If yes the hierarchy may be different for the pc version of iTunes library, or is it that he can't find the files even from the finder?
    And Red Dwarf adds:
Just to add to hyphen's reply, FAT32 has a maximum size of 32GB. The user cannot make the partition larger than 32GB should they decide to go down that route.
Another alternative is a utility called TransMac. When installed on a PC, it will allow the PC to recognise a Mac OS formatted drive and read the files within. No need then to worry about all that FAT32 and NTFS malarky stuff. It weighs in at $64 dollars though for a 1-3 user licence:

So hopefully, with Kappy's help, too, you will be able to figure it out.
    Good luck.

  • ITunes does not see music

My daughter has her iTunes library on an external drive She recently had some trouble with the drive, and operated the computer without it for a short time. The problem with the drive has been resolved, and the music files are visible in Finder, but not in iTunes. I've tried reseting the location of the music folder, with no success. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

Launch iTunes while holding down the option key on the keyboard. When iTunes asks you to either create a new library or choose a library, click the choose option and navigate to the iTunes library on her external drive.

  • Moved library , itunes does not see music

I moved my daughters itunes library over to a new identity on my AGP mac.
I used Option to open the library and navigated to the folder.
When it opens there is no music.
    The AGP has 7.6.2
    the old computer had 7.3.2
its not a big deal if we can't get playlists back, just want to see the music.
When I click on the files in the music folder they import into itunes.....
    thanks.
    Laura

    On the new computer
    Go to itunes
Go to import music from file in the FILE menu....i think
Find the itunes folder and click open
This should find all the music in the folder and add it to the library!
Sorry not on my mac so cant check all the steps but it goes something like that!

  • ITunes doesn't detect the files on my Linkstation NAS driver  after crash

I had iTunes set up with the music folder on my Linkstation NAS drive. Every thing worked fine. Then a week ago my laptop crashed and I had to re-install Windows XP home and all that goes with it.
After installing iTunes I set up the location of the music folder to be on the Linkstation (using Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General). However, iTunes dosent "see" my music files on the Linkstation anymore.
The Linkstation is accessible to my computer and if I double click on music file from the Linkstation iTunes will play it and "see" that particular song but not the rest.
Is there any way of making iTunes scan the Linkstation so it can "see" the music files on it

For future reference, after some tricking around and a lot of finger crossing I managed to fix the problem. And here's how:
    (1) I deleted the iTunes folder that was in My Music folder and started iTunes.By starting iTunes it creates anew iTumes folder with new blank .itl and.xml library files. I did that to start with a completely new iTunes .xml and .itl file.
    (2) I double checked that the iTunes Music folder was set to the music folder on my NAS drive (using Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General).
    (3) I also made sure that the "Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library" was NOT selected ( Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General)
    (4) I then opened the Music folder on my NAS drive and selected all. I then dragged and dropped the entire contents (5773items 42.9GB) on to the iTunes window.
    (5) It took about 30mins to transfer the details and get the art work from the net. Note: it didn't transfer the music, only the details of the location of the music.
    AND finally
    (6) I backed up my new iTunes .itl and .xml library files and made a note to never forget to back up my iTunes .itl and .xml library files!
    Phew.
And thanks to camoracer for the input.

  • Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes.  iTunes does not "see" the devise.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.

Wiped our old iPad 1 clean, now can't install iOS from iTunes using laptop PC (W Vista).  iTunes does not "see" the device.  Tried uninstalling and installing iTunes on laptop.  Also bought new USB cable.  The iPad is charging, but that's all it does.  Just want to get it operating again for browsing and e-reading.

OK.  You merely erased the content and settings.  The IOS is still there.
If it has NEVER been jailbroke, here are some standard repair procedures.  From what you've already stated, my guess is that you'll end up with Recovery Mode described in the last paragraph.
First, try a system reset.  It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo.  Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears.  You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore.  Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset.  It could take well over an hour!  Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync.  From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod.  Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod.  As before, say "yes."  Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time.  If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device.  Corrective action is simple -  choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here.  You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again.  Also, read this.

  • ITunes does not allow music purchased on iPhone to be sent to my computer

So, I "purchased" (thankfully only FREE songs) two songs on my iPhone and I was told I could simply download them onto the computer when i connected. Well I can't, so I tried to download again but it told me they were already downloaded and should be there....they weren't. I followed the instructions to "check for available downloads" and I was told there weren't any.
Long story short the ONLY way I can get those two songs is to download them again. THANKFULLY it is a MONDAY and they are STILL FREE!!!
***?? seriously Apple, help me out here. I suppose I MIGHT NEVER MAKE A PURCHASE ON THE GO since i cannot have that song to play on my AUTHORIZED Computer. Guess that will help me not make too many purchases!!!!!

iTunes does not allow music purchased on iPhone to be sent to my computer
    Yes it does.
    Well I can't,
    Why not? What happens?
I followed the instructions to "check for available downloads" and I was told there weren't any. Because you already downloaded them to your phone. You only get one download.
Plug in your iPhone, select it in iTunes then File > Transfer purchases.
