ITunes Doesn't Identify iPods Correctly

I have two iPods, a Mini and a Nano. My original iTunes 6.0.3 install on Windows 2000 Pro correctly recognizes the Mini and Nano as different devices with different names and updates them accordingly. It also properly manages the saved On-The-Go playlists.
I recently bought a new Windows XP Pro laptop, and want to move iTunes over. I installed iTunes 6.0.3 and copied the My Music\iTunes directory. Once everything works properly, I will uninstall iTunes from the W2K machine.
My music library is fine, but iTunes on the XP laptop can't distinguish between the two iPods, identifying them both as "USER1" instead of their configured names. It cannot manage On-The-Go playlists on either iPod. I upgraded from 6.0.3 to 6.0.4 without solving the problem.
Firmware on the Mini is 1.4 as reported by iPod Settings - About. Firmware on the Nano is 1.0 by the same method.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

hmmmm. i think we'd better check up on this possibility:
Windows confuses iPod with network drive and may keep iPod from mounting or songs may seem to disappear

  • Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod even though Itunes appears!!!!

Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod even though Itunes pops up! I dropped it like 1 foot in the air once and landed on concrete. Now everything's fine until I play a song and it will just skip, freeze or just play a little bit and then skip. I don't think this is the problem but this is getting more wierd. I've tried almost every solution in this site but none of them worked so please, anyone, help me if you have a solution to this problem!!!

When your iPod does not appear in iTunes:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61771
You might want to reset your iPod to prevent any more skipping and freezing. Press and hold the MENU and CENTER buttons - at the same time - until the Apple logo shows. This should take about 6 seconds. Also, you want to do this while your iPod is connected to your computer.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize IPod Nano 7th Generation

ITunes doesn't recognize my IPod Nano 7th Generation. I get a message saying "An IPod has been detected but could not be identified properly". My Windows 7 computer shows the IPod Nano as a removable drive until I launch ITunes at which point it disappears from the list of removable drives. I even disabled my security software (Norton 360 but not Spybot S & D) and it didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions..............Thanks

  • Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod -- Please Help!

    Greetings,
As the subject says, I cannot get my itunes to recognize my ipod. My ipod shows up fine under "my computer," and works normally everywhere else. I am running itunes 7.0.2, and Windows XP. I am constantly getting the error message about the ipod service module needs to close down. I've tried everything at the Apple support page, including, but not necessarily limited to --
    1. Uninstalling/reinstalling itunes and Quicktime.
    2. Resetting my ipod
    3. Using msconfig to manually restart the ipod service module. This doesn't work because as soon as itunes opens, the service module shuts down.
    4. Changing the USB connection I use to connect the ipod to my PC.
    5. Restarting the PC with everything but itunes turned off.
Short of reinstalling Windows, something I really don't want to do, I am out of ideas. If I weren't already going bald, I'd be pulling my hair out.
    Any ideas? Please?
    Thanks,
    Jason

  • Frozen in "Do Not Disconnect" iTunes doesn't see iPod

I have never had one bit of trouble with my iPod until today. I plugged it in, the Do Not Disconnect comes up, the clock is frozen, no charging happening and iTunes doesn't see the iPod. I tried the "restart" and nothing is working. What do I do?
I haven't upgraded to iTunes 8.1 yet, would that help?
    HELP!

OK, so I tried the Reset again. Still didn't work. THEN I saw this:
    Tip:
+If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.+
Tried it again and now it's all better.

  • Computer/iTunes doesn't recognize iPod.  Can't restore either

Somehow, between syncing my iPod (classic, fifth generation)with iTunes and downloaded latest version of iTunes, my pod self-destructed. I got a brief message to "restore" but since the computer or iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the iPod, I can't do it. I am no longer getting the message. I can't find the iPod in Windows Explorer or Device Manager. When I plug the iPod into the computer, all I get is a completely white screen and an occasional beep-beep. Can I take it to a retailer and have it restored?

Have you had a chance to look at these troubleshooting pages? They may be of some help:

  • Itunes doesn't recognise ipod Mini

    hi,
About 4 days ago now, I updated my ipod because it kept on saying I had to when I plugged it in. So I did and now Itunes doesn't recognise it, infact neither does my pc. It worked absolutely fine before I updated it.
When I plug it in my computer the computer displays ''Found New Hardware''. It then says what do you want the wizard to do?
    -Install the software automatically
-Install from a list or specific location.
If I choose either of these it comes up with
''The software you are installing for this hardware has not passed windows logo testing to verify its compatibility with windows XP.''
if you select ''Continue anyway'' it says ''Cannot install this hardware''
I really dont know what to do. This has never happened before, just as soon as I updated my ipod it happened.
    Please Help??????

I wish I could help you. I am experiencing the same problem. There is a problem with the mini and the new updates. Some more paranoid folks are thinking its a scam to get us to buy the new nano. I hope itunes and ipod fix this problem soon!

  • TS1410 Itunes doesn't recognise Ipod.

My itunes said that the ipod could not be restored and i thought that this might have been to do with the cable(was very worn) as the ipod has not been syncing recently either. However I have bought a new cable and itunes doesn't recognise the ipod at all so I can't even try to restore now?

  • ITunes doesn't see iPods

starting last nite my iTunes doesn't see either iPod that always appeared when plugged in. I changed my connecting wire without any better results.

Bentley, try downloading and re-installing iTunes. I had a similar problem on my Macbook - I could see my iPod in the Finder but iTunes couldn't see it. I re-installed iTunes and voila, it was there.

  • ITunes Doesn't Show iPod

My main computer, which has iTunes on it, was my main iTunes source for downloading music, charging my iPod, and listening to music on my computer. The computer recently started acting up so I had it taken in. I do have another computer (Compaq Presario) which has an older version of iTunes on it. I plugged my iPod in and the computer says that it has found a new mass storage hardware device, but when I open iTunes nothing pops up for the iPod. Is there some way that I can get iTunes to recognize my iPod so that the iPod screen doesn't say "Do Not Disconnect" forever?

Didn't have the most recent version of iTunes...

  • ITunes doesn't recognize iPod since last software update

I updated to iTunes 5.0.1 & iPod 2005-09-23 updater & now when I plug in the iPod w/ USB to my PowerBook G4 running 10.4.2, iTunes doesn't recognize it-- no icon in bottom-right grey area, nor left-hand column-- and the iPod says "Do not disconnect." Which means I'm kinda stuck. Tried restarting, didn't help. Advice? Thanks.

I have the EXACT same problem. Support line suggeste that the iPod updater must have newer software than the iTunes, so I should go to Apple & download the iTunes update. Well, I did, and it didn't do a @#%ing thing to help. I'm NEW to mac & I'm P.O.'ed!!! (paid significantly extra money for iBook compared to Dell, etc since it's supposedly so easy & user-friendly... NOT an impressive start!!!)

  • Moving iPod to new PC.  Songs not found.  iTunes doesn't recognize iPod

Actually, it is a new Windows install on the same machine it used to be on. We have a recent back up the iTunes folder but the total size of that is about 900mb. There is about 9mb of content on the iPod though. iTunes doesn't find music and opening the itml.xml file from MD\MM\iTunes shows paths for "unfindable" music being things like:
    C:/Ipod/F05/Nickelback%20-%20How%20you%20remind.mp3
Stuff purchased on iTunes still plays after re-authorization since we just copied the iTunes folder back over in to the new machine.
Keeping the play lists is very important.
    Questions:
    1) How do we get the new "machine" to recognize the ipod as being associated with this one instead of the old install?
    2) How do we pull the music that iTunes in Windows doesn't see anymore back off the iPod and in to the places on the hard drive where iTunes is looking for files?

No, first of all i've got a MacBook not with dual core
I suspect an error with the connection type 'cause at work i receive this kind of problem and at home not.
I solved the problem with the ipod updater yesterday, at home i successfully updated it but today i get a new error message while contacting itunes server:
I cannot process the request, an unknown error occurred on itunes server (error type -206)!
Do you know why?may it depend by the Office server?
    thanks

  • Itune doesn't recognize ipod shuffle

Itune doesn't recognize my ipod shuffle(first generation). please help me!

I've been searching for days on this kind of thing and always see the same frustration from fellow iTunes/iPod users -- the new version of iTunes won't recognize their iPod. Tonight I saw something that looked so simple that I had to try it, AND IT WORKED.
Press the MENU (not play/pause) and CENTER button and hold until iPod turns off and on again. Plug into your computer and hopefully iTunes will recognize it like it did for me, first time. I was completely blown away, because I had tried everything else for MONTHS!!!
    Good luck to everyone.
