ITunes doesn't recognize iPod

I'll start out by saying that I've hurled every curse I can imagine out into the inky blackness of space the past four weeks. I've pulled out hair, gnashed teeth, thrown chairs, punched walls, and have almost gone nuclear.
I have a laptop. External harddrive. 8000 songs, most of which are ripped from many CDs in my collection as a past DJ. It takes many nights of importing CDs to get here. Since I bought my first of three iPods in 2005 I've bought around $2000 from the iTunes store. Along the way I've burned up one harddrive, got no sympathy from the Genius Store for transferring songs to the new hardrive and had to use 3rd party software.
My default library location is on my external drive. I also consolidated my library. Yet, every two months or so, iTunes forgets that F: is my library location and thinks it is now C:. I now have thousands of broken links and lost playlists. After the dozenth time this happend I said no more to iTunes and I tried various other players and finally settled on MediaMonkey. It worked great and does a lot more as a program.
Yet there were problems in syncing my songs through mediamonkey. Songs and playlist were there but when I tried to play it on my iPod, only some of them would play and it would skip through the other songs. Finally, after hours of trying to make it work, I grudgingly went back to iTunes with much gnashing of teeth and wailing and cursing.
My iPod synced okay... and then about a week later of using only iTunes it stopped syncing halfway through a sync. It would suddenly tell me that it could not read from the IPOD and I should restore it.
I did.
Well... Another four nights of several hours each night of doing the 5 R's over and over yielded nothing. Zilch. I've reset the iPod, installed iTunes, over and over. I've checked drivers, uninstalled programs, disabled drivers and enabled, restarted rebooted, and done everything on every page I could find via GOOGLE save kill a chicken in a voudou ritual.
My iPhone synced just fine. My iPod showed up on MY COMPUTER. The icon shows up in iTunes. But it tells me to restore... ALWAYS.
I've renamed my USB drive (my iPod used to be E: and now it is P:). I've put it in external drive use and back out. I've installed the Windows Super Uninstall Cleaner program and killed anything Apple related on my computer with impunity again and again. I've run registry cleaners and other cleaning tools. Nothing worked.
The only other option left was to sign my soul over to the devil who was now sitting in the corner and grinning profusely, and I decided to go back to mediamonkey and try to use it. I turned it on and saw that, with my iPod connected, I had three options under the sync menu, E: iPod, E: iPod classic, and E: external hard drive. I tried syncing a 2 Live Crew CD to both options that said iPod but while it gave me the option under the menu tab, the icon wasn't lit up (meaning it wasn't there). So I chose the third option, external harddrive. When I did this the icon lit up and it synced the songs for me.
Weird part here. When I disconnected the iPod and looked for the songs... there was nothing there. Zilch (I did have the option to organize in iTunes fashion checked as well). When I plugged the iPod back in and iTunes started, it asked me to name my new iPod and started syncing happily away.
Currently it is a couple hundred through the list of songs to sync and I am still waiting with baited breath to see if it works.
This is very weird and I have no idea what happened but hope that if someone else reads this that they will not jump off that building, as I almost did, but will try something else. I hope this helps some computer programmer find the glitch that seems to be plaguing so many iPod users (there are tons of pages out there on this problem).
Good luck!

I'm still trying to find any suggestions to give you about shuffling. You might have to restore your iPod to factory settings if multiple reset attempts did not work. Be sure to back up your music before you do that.

  • Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod even though Itunes appears!!!!

Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod even though Itunes pops up! I dropped it like 1 foot in the air once and landed on concrete. Now everything's fine until I play a song and it will just skip, freeze or just play a little bit and then skip. I don't think this is the problem but this is getting more wierd. I've tried almost every solution in this site but none of them worked so please, anyone, help me if you have a solution to this problem!!!

When your iPod does not appear in iTunes:

You might want to reset your iPod to prevent any more skipping and freezing. Press and hold the MENU and CENTER buttons - at the same time - until the Apple logo shows. This should take about 6 seconds. Also, you want to do this while your iPod is connected to your computer.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize IPod Nano 7th Generation

ITunes doesn't recognize my IPod Nano 7th Generation. I get a message saying "An IPod has been detected but could not be identified properly". My Windows 7 computer shows the IPod Nano as a removable drive until I launch ITunes at which point it disappears from the list of removable drives. I even disabled my security software (Norton 360 but not Spybot S & D) and it didn't solve the problem. Any suggestions..............Thanks

  • ITunes doesn't recognize iPod since last software update

I updated to iTunes 5.0.1 & iPod 2005-09-23 updater & now when I plug in the iPod w/ USB to my PowerBook G4 running 10.4.2, iTunes doesn't recognize it-- no icon in bottom-right grey area, nor left-hand column-- and the iPod says "Do not disconnect." Which means I'm kinda stuck. Tried restarting, didn't help. Advice? Thanks.

I have the EXACT same problem. Support line suggeste that the iPod updater must have newer software than the iTunes, so I should go to Apple & download the iTunes update. Well, I did, and it didn't do a @#%ing thing to help. I'm NEW to mac & I'm P.O.'ed!!! (paid significantly extra money for iBook compared to Dell, etc since it's supposedly so easy & user-friendly... NOT an impressive start!!!)

  • Itune doesn't recognize ipod shuffle

Itune doesn't recognize my ipod shuffle(first generation). please help me!

I've been searching for days on this kind of thing and always see the same frustration from fellow iTunes/iPod users -- the new version of iTunes won't recognize their iPod. Tonight I saw something that looked so simple that I had to try it, AND IT WORKED.
Press the MENU (not play/pause) and CENTER button and hold until iPod turns off and on again. Plug into your computer and hopefully iTunes will recognize it like it did for me, first time. I was completely blown away, because I had tried everything else for MONTHS!!!
    Good luck to everyone.

  • Tried restoring iPod, never finished, now iTunes doesn't recognize iPod

i tried to restore my iPod, but then my computer froze midway. Now when i try to plug the iPod into my computer, my iTunes doesn't recognize it and whenever i try to use the updater, it just keeps saying 'Ipod Service Error'. Now i can't put my songs into my iPod and the battery icon/'Do Not Disconnect' logo is stuck in this really traditional fashion, not like the normal font/picture. Does anybody know what i can do?

  • Computer/iTunes doesn't recognize iPod.  Can't restore either

Somehow, between syncing my iPod (classic, fifth generation)with iTunes and downloaded latest version of iTunes, my pod self-destructed. I got a brief message to "restore" but since the computer or iTunes doesn't seem to recognize the iPod, I can't do it. I am no longer getting the message. I can't find the iPod in Windows Explorer or Device Manager. When I plug the iPod into the computer, all I get is a completely white screen and an occasional beep-beep. Can I take it to a retailer and have it restored?

  • Win/iTunes doesn't recognize iPod + monochrome charger icon, please help

Yesterday, my iPod was fine and now it doesn't seem to work. When I put in my iPod, it goes in, I see the Apple logo and then it goes straight to the monochrome charger icon. iTunes nor Windows recognizes it and when I take it out, the iPod doesn't work at all. Nothing appears. I tried the R's, and nothing. I've had the iPod for about 6 months, I'm hoping the battery didn't expire already... Someone please help me out. If it helps, iTunes 7.0 and I have Windows 2000 and Disk Use was enabled. Thank you.

  • Moving iPod to new PC.  Songs not found.  iTunes doesn't recognize iPod

Actually, it is a new Windows install on the same machine it used to be on. We have a recent back up the iTunes folder but the total size of that is about 900mb. There is about 9mb of content on the iPod though. iTunes doesn't find music and opening the itml.xml file from MD\MM\iTunes shows paths for "unfindable" music being things like:
    C:/Ipod/F05/Nickelback%20-%20How%20you%20remind.mp3
Stuff purchased on iTunes still plays after re-authorization since we just copied the iTunes folder back over in to the new machine.
Keeping the play lists is very important.
    Questions:
    1) How do we get the new "machine" to recognize the ipod as being associated with this one instead of the old install?
    2) How do we pull the music that iTunes in Windows doesn't see anymore back off the iPod and in to the places on the hard drive where iTunes is looking for files?

No, first of all i've got a MacBook not with dual core
I suspect an error with the connection type 'cause at work i receive this kind of problem and at home not.
I solved the problem with the ipod updater yesterday, at home i successfully updated it but today i get a new error message while contacting itunes server:
I cannot process the request, an unknown error occurred on itunes server (error type -206)!
Do you know why?may it depend by the Office server?
    thanks

  • Itunes doesn't recognize ipod, but desktop does

When I plug my 5th generation iPod into my MacBook, the desktop recognizes it, but iTunes doesn't and then iTunes freezes and I have to force-quit it. What is wrong?

You cannot sync music from an iPhone to a computer. It does not support disk mode, as other iPods do. If the music is purchased you can connect the iPhone to iTunes and choose "Transfer Purchases" from the File menu.

  • Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod Touch 4g

I purchased my daughter a brand new Ipod Touch 4G last weekend.   When we connect the new Ipod Touch to my daughters computer, Itunes won't recognize her Ipod Touch.   However, I can attach her Ipod Touch to two other computers and it recognizes without problem.
When I plug in the Ipod touch to her computer, it makes a noise indicating it has recognized something is plugged in but nothing is recognized in Itunes.
And what is more strange is her computer will recognize four other Apple devices without problem (an I Phone 4G, an I Phone 3G, an I Pad 2 and a Ipod Touch 3G).
I have completely gone through the recommended Ipod Touch Trouble Shooting steps 4 times now and have no success with the Ipod Touch recognized on my daughters computer.   I have completely removed all the Apple software (Bonjour, Itunes, Apple, etc.) and reinstalled.     I have even removed the anti virus software and it didn't help.
I have also tried to completely erase the Ipod Touch holding down the Sleep Walk button and Home Button for 10 seconds.   After plugging in to her computer when indicated, I get an error message that the reset was not successful.
It is so strange that her computer recognizes 4 other apple devices without problem and her Ipod touch is recognized by 2 other computers without problem.   There has to be a specific reason that it won't work on my daughters computer.
Any suggestions beyond the Ipod Touch Trouble Shooting link?

    - First try placing the iPOd in recovery mode and resoring via iTunes on the computer: For recovery mode:
iPhone and iPod touch: Unable to update or restore
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808- Then it is time for an appountment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.  Sounds like you have a defective iPod.

  • ITunes doesn't recognize iPod library since I reformatted computer

Hi all. Have mercy on me as I am new at these discussion boards.
I have a wonderful iPod that I really enjoy. My laptop get really slow so I had to reformat it. Once I completed the reformat, I began to reload programs, and put iTunes on right away. I connected my iPod via USB, and it downloaded my purchased songs back onto my laptop, so that was a success.
But iTunes doesn't seem to want to let me do any normal manipulation to my iPod files. For instance, it won't let me copy new songs downloaded to iTunes onto my iPod. It won't let me create new playlists on iTunes, or anything.
I got on Apples support page, and did the first 4 "R's" (didn't want to do the nuclear option of Restore) and that didn't change anything.
Any advice and help the forum community could give me would be most welcomed!

  • Itunes doesn´t recognize Ipod and error (-49)

My Ipod is an 80Gb classic (6th gen),so I tried to sync with my laptop and Itunes said that I have to update to version 7.2 (or 7.something) and I did it.
When I tried to sync the ipod an error ocurred...the infamous error (-48) "an unknown error occurred -48" then, my Ipod was not on Itunes for no reason. Then I disconnect the ipod and reconnected and Ipod doesn´t appear on itunes anymore so I started reading blogs and so on to find the error and I found a lot of possible solutions but anything worked for me. I tried these potential solutions (I found all of them in Apple support except the marked ones *) :
Install later itunes to version 7.
    Install latest version
Apple 5 steps (reset, retry, restart, reinstall, restore)
    Deleting temp files
    Change the drive letter
This guide iPod: Appears in Windows but not in iTunes
Check and fix errors from properties in windows (no found errors)
    and a lot more
And nothing works for me. Also I have an old Ipod nano and  it works fine and when I connect that ipod. An extra detail is when I connect my nano to the pc (itunes doesn´t open automatically with this ipod) a normal logo appears in device section, like a usb memory...but, when I connect the Classic Ipod an Ipod´s image appears. I don´t know if this is normal.
This is what I mean, "IPOD (H:)" is the classic and "ipod del ch" is the nano.

    Ipod v 1.1.2 PC model MB029 80gb
*The ipod has 218mb occupied in disk...I don't know why.

You might want to reset your iPod to prevent any more skipping and freezing. Press and hold the MENU and CENTER buttons - at the same time - until the Apple logo shows. This should take about 6 seconds. Also, you want to do this while your iPod is connected to your computer.

  • Itunes doesn't recognize Ipod -- Please Help!

    Greetings,
As the subject says, I cannot get my itunes to recognize my ipod. My ipod shows up fine under "my computer," and works normally everywhere else. I am running itunes 7.0.2, and Windows XP. I am constantly getting the error message about the ipod service module needs to close down. I've tried everything at the Apple support page, including, but not necessarily limited to --
    1. Uninstalling/reinstalling itunes and Quicktime.
    2. Resetting my ipod
    3. Using msconfig to manually restart the ipod service module. This doesn't work because as soon as itunes opens, the service module shuts down.
    4. Changing the USB connection I use to connect the ipod to my PC.
    5. Restarting the PC with everything but itunes turned off.
Short of reinstalling Windows, something I really don't want to do, I am out of ideas. If I weren't already going bald, I'd be pulling my hair out.
    Any ideas? Please?
    Thanks,
    Jason
