Itunes doesn't shut down completely, can't be restarted without ending task tree

For the past 3 years, whenever I use Itunes on my windows 7 laptop, the program sometimes has trouble shutting down completely. I have reinstalled itunes through the many versions during the past three years; many times, to no avail. Even though the window will close, when I try to open it again, nothing happens. Sometimes the windows circle appears briefly, but Itunes does not start.
When I open the task manager, I find that Itunes is still running, although it doesn't appear anywhere else, including the notification area (lower right corner of the status bar). Once I shut down the process, I can start Itunes again.
While this is a minor inconvenience, I worry that I am doing damage to other programs on my computer, or to my external hard drive (my itunes music collection is about 1.5 TB).
Other information that may be useful:
I am running Itunes 12.1.2.27, 64 bit. However, this problem has existed on all versions of itunes I have used on this computer for the past three years
When using any text field in Itunes (search field, changing track names, etc), the text field expands in a way that suggests some part of the code is missing. Also, the icon for itunes in the taskbar looks extremely low resolution (the circle is pixelated, not smooth).

If it's happening on that computer even after re-installing multiple times you may want to contact Microsoft to have them look at your registry. It seems that this has been happening for quite some time with no resolution. In my experience, the registry on the PC was off and once that was corrected I never had an issue.

  • Laptop doesn't shut down completely

Hello,I've got a problem where shutdown, sleep, hibernate orders won't completely put my notebook in peace, the process goes until the screen goes black, and then It's stuck on that with my power button light up, and rest of keyboard indication lights, like WiFi and so.. The problem happened when I replaced my Fan since my old had stopped working properly, I've damaged a cable pin during the process of replugging my laptop but then I fixed it by simply pushing it back at its place, It's positioned right below my touchpad anyhow. Changing OS several time hasn't solved the problem, double checking if the cable was connected properly done. No idea what could be it, but Now I can only hold down my power button everytime I want to shutdown my laptop.

Hi guys! I had the same issue, but I got into a support chat with an HP Technician, the first time it was a temp fix, second time it seems to be working great! Heres how to fi the issue: 1. Go to this link: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/drivers.html2. Put in your product name or number (Can find this out by doing Esc + fn)3. Click Option 24. Change the top blue bar to Windows 8.15. Install the BIOs driver6. You should be good to go after installing! *I have recommended this on the forums and there is not a BIOs update for Envy users...hopefully HP will come out with one, but pavilion users there is one! So far I have had no issues! If there do seem to be issues I will let you guys know! Please let me know if you run into any issues, I will try to help, also if you see anyone having the same issue please help them this seems to be a HUGE problem.  *UPDATE* Over the last few hours after I got the BIOs update I was checking in to see if it was still working RIGHT after I posted this I checked in, didn't work...sorry if you did the BIOs update thinking it was a perm fix cause its not, I guess we will have to keep going through with this until HP/Microsoft figure out what the hell is wrong, good news is, is that hard shutting down your laptop can maybe corupt an application, it cannot do any OS issues which is a good thing.

  • My iTunes doesn`t shut down

After I downloaded the ner version of itunes,it works ok but doesn`t shut down

Some people have found that turning off sharing in iTunes solves this.
Also the bonjour service has been associated with the problem. Try stopping the the bonjour service - the following article tells you how:

    Hello,
I recently tried downloading the IOS8 to my iPod 5th generation and when it was almost done the computer said there was an error. Right after that, the iPod shut down completely and now it's on recovery mode. I plugged it in and it said that I had to restore it and update it so I could use it again but it doesn't let me. What can I do? I even did a backup before the update.
    I really need help.

What happens when you connect to computer and restore via iTunes?
    Without knowing that:

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try another cable
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

    This is what worked:
"In iTunes, I signed out of the store. I exited itunes and restarted it, logged back into the store (with my apple id), then I pulled down the iTunes menu in the menu bar and selected Check for updates.
At this point it said that iTunes 11.1 was available and I'm downloading now " Quoted from a fellow user.
    It fixed my problem.

    Hi Alkaf,
    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like your iPad will not turn on. Take a look at the iPhone article linked below, it provides tips that will help resolve power issues for both iPhones and iPads.

Will not turn on, will not turn on unless connected to power, or unexpected power off
Verify that the Sleep/Wake button functions. If it does not function, inspect it for signs of damage. If the button is damaged or is not functioning when pressed, seek service.

Connect the iPhone to the iPhone's USB power adapter and let it charge for at least ten minutes.
After at least 30 minutes, if:
The home screen appears: The iPhone should be working. Update to the latest version of iOS if necessary. Continue charging it until it is completely charged and you see this battery icon in the upper-right corner of the screen . Then unplug the phone from power. If it immediately turns off, seek service.
The low-battery image appears, even after the phone has charged for at least 20 minutes: See "iPhone displays the low-battery image and is unresponsive" symptom in this article.
Something other than the Home screen or Low Battery image appears, continue with this article for further troubleshooting steps.
If the iPhone did not turn on, reset it while connected to the iPhone USB power adapter.
If the display turns on, go to step 4.
If the display remains black, go to next step.
Connect the iPhone to a computer and open iTunes. If iTunes recognizes the iPhone and indicates that it is in recovery mode, attempt to restore the iPhone. If the iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes or if you have difficulties in restoring the iPhone, see this article for further assistance.
If restoring the iPhone resolved the issue, go to step 4. If restoring the iPhone did not solve the issue, seek service.

  • IMac shuts down completely.

My iMac will completely shut down after a while if I go to the closed apple and click on sleep. It will also completely shut down if I leave the screen up and the computer puts it in sleep mode. It doesn't shut down instatantly, it will stay in sleep mode for a little bit. If I come back in a couple of hours it is completely shut down. How can I fix this?

    Step 1
Take all the applicable steps in this support article. That's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. Please don't skip any of the steps.
    Step 2
If you're running OS X 10.8.5 or earlier, from the menu bar select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Accessibility
If the checkbox at the bottom marked
    Enable access for assistive devices
is checked, uncheck it and test.
If you're running OS X 10.9 or later, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ Security & Privacy ▹ Privacy ▹ Accessibility
If any applications are listed on the right and have a checked box next to them, uncheck all the boxes and test. You may first have to click the padlock icon in the lower left corner of the window and authenticate as an administrator to unlock the settings.
    Step 3
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator for this step.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
In the Console window, look under the heading DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION on the left for Diagnostic and Usage Messages. If you don't see that heading, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. In the search box in the window's toolbar, enter "powerd" (without the quotes.) Select the last few messages that appear, if any, and copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

  • ITunes had to shut down half way through iPad iOS download now its stopped working

My iPad now has a black screen with white apple logo - it won't respond to anything and iTunes doesn't find it.  This is ever since halfway through updating its iOS to 7.0.2, I tunes had a problem and had to shut down.  Can anyone help please please

    Hey Tom Taylor2,
Thanks for the question. I understand you are experiencing issues updating your iPad to iOS 7. If you have not already done so, you may want to restart or reset the iPad:
iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If the above steps do not resolve the issue, you'll want to restore your iPad with iTunes in recovery mode:

  • When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.

When an internet connection is available, I run iTunes and it shuts down on my Windows 7 64bit computer.  It used to crash when I went to the iTunes store but, after installing the newest version of iTunes it crashes if there is an internet connection.  I can turn off my internet access and then run the software but, once I try the iTunes store again it crashes.  It does not give an error message as to why its doing this.  Just says it encountered a problem.  I cannot do anything with my iPad or iPod without this working.  Its extremely frustrating.
I have also contacted Apple several times and they give me links to other's problems but, none have worked to fix this.

    Close your iTunes,
    Go to command Prompt -
(Win 7/Vista) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES, right mouse click "Command Prompt", choose "Run as Administrator".
    (Win XP SP2 & above) - START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/Command Prompt
In the "Command Prompt" screen, type in
    netsh winsock reset
    Hit "ENTER" key
    Restart your computer.
If you do get a prompt after restart windows to remap LSP, just click NO.
Now launch your iTunes and see if it is working now.

  • Iphone 4s turns/shuts down completely for no known reason, why?

my new iphone 4s shut down completely...and only holding the home button and on/off button reboots the phone.  but what causes it to automatically shut down to the point where itunes does not recognize the phone?

Ok, well thanks for confirming this.
    I have two other questions...
I found this : '' If you're getting the unit fixed by Apple, be aware that you must have the original HD installed. If it's a third-party SSD or hybrid, Apple will tack $950 to the bill; if you don't have the original drive anymore, Apple will return your laptop unrepaired. ''
    Is that true ? Because I actually have a hybrid HD and don't have the original...nor 950 $ ...
    I found this information on : http://logicboardmac.blogspot.ca
Finally, I also found information about a flat rate repair option ?

Anyone knows anything about this ? Woud this apply to my macbook pro ?

  • My laptop just shuts down completely immediately on startup.

That about covers it.  Within just a few seconds it shuts down and I have to restart, but it repeatedly shuts off.

When you say Startup..up to what point? Do you still see the Toshiba logo? If so, you can boot to BIOS by pressing F2 on the TOshiba screen. Then on the BIOS screen, press F9 to load the setup defaults, select yes then press F10, save the changes and exit. If same thing happens, you might consider doing recovery. Thats if you're still seeing something on the screen. But if your screen is completely black and you are still under warranty it would be much better to send your system to depot for diagnosis and repair.

  • My Airport Extreme intermittently shuts down completely.

My Airport Extreme (newest model) will shut down completely, all by itself, with the green light completely off.  When I unplug and replug the device, it starts again and the green light comes back on after it boots.  It's as if a "circuit breaker" cuts off the power.  No other equipment shuts off, so it's not the electric outlet.

I just bought a new AE last year and today without any warning it just went off. No light nothing.
Tried to get a light by unplugging and rep lugging, still nothing.
I have had frequent episodes in the past few weeks where the AE dropped the line and I had to run diagnostics to get it going again.
I just put in an order for a new AE, but am wondering if this is normal, only getting one year out of a AE.
This is really bad.. they should replace it even if it is outside 12months.. Just check if you have any applecare or a product you can buy applecare on, and it will cover the AE as well.. lacking anything you have to buy applecare, you can still buy an Apple TV, plus applecare.. that explicitly covers the Airport routers. Do not open the Apple TV.. you can sell it in shrink wrap.. so the purchase of the applecare is all you are paying.
Make apple replace it and keep replacing it.. do not wait.. if it is dropping the line and you need constantly to power cycle.. return it as unfit for use. Routers are supposed to have uptimes measured in months if not years. Daily or hourly reboots is not acceptable.
