Itunes driving me crazy! - CPU hogging, hanging up -update: problem solved

My itunes (v.7.4.2) seems to have a problem that I can't find a solution to. I play a song...it plays, then uses like 90-100% of the CPU, hanging up at the same time (lots of spinning beachball) while continuing to play the track and getting an "App not responding message". This lasts maybe 3 or 4 minutes and it winds down, "App not responding" message disappears, at which point I can sometimes (not always) do something with it (i.e. play another track, stop, quit, etc) for a minute or so or until I push play again...then a given song will play and it will hang, drive the CPU again. fans turn on...drives me nuts!
this repeats over and over.
I have:
Restarted
Cleared caches, repaired permissions, etc with Cocktail
Deleted the plists and started new
All to no effect.
Other info - I have a huge library on three drives. 100GB or so. worked fine until very recently, though I have no idea what could have catalyzed this behavior. Occurs when external drives are disconnected and playing from internal mp3s.
Yay - I solved the problem myself...Had Albumartthingy installed some time back and it was gumming things up. deleted all of it and now it seems to be running fine. beware of third party apps that interfere with Itunes! thought I'd post this anyway to add to the knowledge base...

ok, i can rip music to my windows media player and then manually transfer it to itunes...is this the same concept as importing directly to itunes?

iTunes has no serial number. If you are trying to get to Apple phone support, that is linked to the purchase of Apple hardware, so you need to enter in the serial number of an Apple device. Otherwise, for assistance with problems with iTunes itself you would need to call Apple Support and they would almost certainly charge for the call. I would instead suggest you post the issue you're trying to address here in detail. Someone here can probably offer suggestions.

Itunes driving me crazy

i have a brand new (2005) gateway laptop. itunes will not recognize any cd's. when i put the cd in the computer, itunes opens, it says "accessing gracenote CDDB" and when it's done processing nothing shows up in my library or anywhere else in itunes. i ran cd diagnostics and i don't know what it means, but maybe someone can help...

New iTunes driving me crazy

I have had my iphone for several years now (4S). I have always had access to all my music whenever I wanted it - UNTIL NOW.
Everytime I'm in my car or want to listen away from home all my music shows that it is in the cloud and must be downloaded (for a FEE) to hear it.
I do not have Itunes match turned on. How can I have all my music on my phone ALWAYS???

There is no cost to download from iCloud. There may be data use charges from your cell carrier.
Settings > Cellular and turn off iTunes & App stores. This will prevent downlaoding apps/music/movies over cell data.
I do not have Itunes match turned on.
Are you subscribed to iTunes Match?
When you are on wifi, turn it on and download the music.
Tap the cloud icon with down arrow next to Download All or only the songs/albums you want).

When iTunes plays any track it freezes the whole computer when it gets to 11s into the track then becomes unfrozen at 24s. Media player doesn't do this so it has to be an iTunes problem. I have downloaded iTunes many times to try and fix/reinstall the software but nothing works. Please help! Any suggestions welcome!!

I had a similar problem when I got my Mac. I had problems with both syncing to iPhone as well as Apple TV. I ended up deleting and reinstalling iTunes (make sure you get all the components, there's a KB out there on it). Then repairing permissions using the Disk Utility (reinstall iTunes after this), apparently that fixes a lot of sins in the Mac world. (The basic problem is permissions, or at least mine was.)

I had music in my PC~ and using WinXP Chinese, and whenever I transfer songs from WinXP to OSX and into Itune, all my mp3 ID becomes random codes that is not readable, I figured it was the problem with WinXp MP3 ID tags, so I went to WinXp and changed the songs individually, but still no help, I spent countless hours organize these mp3 ID tags in WinXP and come out to be random codes that is not readable, please HELP~!!!!

There is no doubt a difference in the encodings being used on the two platforms. You may need to individually change the tags while in OS X. Info on Chinese input/editing for this OS can be found here:

CPU hog, faults, and memory problems in safari - solutions? or opera?

since recently (a week or two ago i think?) safari is showing the following behaviour:
i start the computer. start safari. reopen all windows from last session. use it normally for a while (activity monitor shows safari using 2 to 5% cpu with spikes to 15 or 20%). after some time (an hour, several hours, a day) the computer gets hot: activity monitor shows safari using between 40 and 115% cpu, never less. inspecting the process reveals that safari is producing massive amounts of faults (as of now 32 million and rising at over 10'000 per second. it also shows the shared memory size or the virtual private memory (one of the two, it varies) peaking at 16 TB (yes, Terabytes; 16.777 to be more precise) for a second (the time between two refreshes of the inspector window). this last behaviour is intermittent but happens during this sort of event.
if i quit and restart safari the problem immediately recurs, in contrast if i restart the computer i can use safari normally for a few hours before it recurs.
i have seen posts here blaming this sort of behaviour on flash, but this doesn't seem to be an adequate explanation to me as i'm able to use safari for some time before the issue occurs, and definitely visit pages with flash during that time.
another post recommended to empty cache, which didn't solve the issue.
is there a solution for this? if there's no solution i'd be willing to switch browser, but safari is very much the one i prefer. i'd even go as far as to re-install my whole system if necessary, but would prefer a less radical solution which allows me to continue using safari.

Hey, man, it's not just you, and it's not just your version. I have a similar configuration (albeit 2 GB RAM) and I have upgraded to the latest version of Safari.
By doing a little troubleshooting I've determined that Flash actually is the problem. It seems to get the most CPU when watching FLV videos, such as those on youtube. My theory is that the algorithm that runs the decoding on the videos is very, very complex, as it allows high-quality video over a standard broadband (ours is 3 Gbps) connection.
As such, this has the implication of being processor intensive as well as HDD intensive caching. My MBP reached 80 Celsius at one point, forcing me to quit most programs. After quitting my MBP cooled down to its usual 55 Celsius (still a bit warm I know, but it probably has more to do with the fact that it's on my lap now).
I do not believe that Safari is at fault, nor do I believe that your Mac is at fault. Mine does not get hot even during extensive Photoshoping or Dreamweaving or even XCoding but YouTubing gets it very hot. Thus, if you've anyone to blame it's Adobe. (sorta... just for Flash)
In terms of solutions however I am afraid I must leave you somewhat in the dark unless you want to quit watching Flash vid's. If you should write to anyone, write to Adobe because chances are good that some other users may be experiencing the same problems.

P.S. Sucpicious confirmed. Firefox watching Flash vids also causes a lot of CPU percentage to be used and the cpu temperature to raise a good number of degrees. So... you're pretty much out of luck no matter what browser you use until Adobe fixes FLV problems. Sorry

ITunes 10.6.1 to 10.6.3 update problem

while updating the software of my Macbook 2.4Ghz I was not able to install iTunes new release 10.6.3.
The messahe i have got is: "Impossibile verificare l'aggiornamento: potrebbe essersi danneggiato durante il download. L'aggiornamento verrà scaricato e ricontrollato la prossima volta che verrà eseguito Aggiornamento Software".
That means: "impossible to verify the new update: it could have been damaged during the download. The update will be downoaded again and re-checked next time you will try to update your software".
I tried many times to re download and install the update but the message is still the same. While removing the flag to iTunes i have been able to intall all the other update but then i tried iTunes again and....no change, same message.
I'm running the OS 10.6.8, not the latest as i heard about so many problem and this one i have is very stable.
can someone help ? am i missing something that i should do to install new iTunes ?

Crazy first gnome session - panels/drawing problems [SOLVED]

I was following the Beginner's guide almost religiously apart from Xorg config (I have an Intel 950 GM on lenovo thinkpad r60e, i use the intel driver, not i810), where I did my best to configure conservatively. installed gnome, then as root:
$ startx
i got three shell windows
$ gnome-session
and get the following:
every time a new window opens, i see its 'boundaries' first which hover with the pointer and then have to click to show it. as you can see, all the windows have panels displaying.
couple other things, I cannot find an xsession-errors file. if it exists, where would it be?
apologies for not being a code monkey. should i post my xorg.conf?

The behavior is perfectly expected.
You did 'startx' as root. Root has no .xinitrc by default, so startx called xinit and xinit looked for /root/.xinitrc. Not finding it, xinit resorted to using /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc. If you study /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc, you will notice that it calls twm. So you opened a twm session, which has 3 terminals open by default, and then tried starting GNOME on top of twm, which worked out kind of half twm, half-GNOMISH.

My i tunes won't open. i keep getting error7 (windows error 193) . contacted microsoft(thought it was a windows thing...not) have uninstalled itunes and everything related to it ,re installed and message still comes up. Help please,driving me crazy.

If it's a Windows error, it's typically going to be a Microsoft problem. Uninstall any security software you have and if you have a restore point for your PC, you may want to restore your PC back to when iTunes was working normally. If none of those work you would need to contact Microsoft and demand help.

I listen to primarily classical music
All of my music was very deliberatley titled by composers "Last Name, First Name" as the artist.
iTunes is changing it to the Album Artist. I have to go in and delete that information - AND THEN IT LATER REVERTS IT BACK!!!
Hours have been wasted and I am feeling so ticked.

If these are ripped mp3s then another possibility is multiple embedded tags. iTunes works best with a single ID3v2.3 tag. Some software creates both an ID3v1.0 and IDv2.x tag. With multiple tags it is not certain which iTunes reads or which it updates, and any device may choose differently. Once songs have the correct info. in iTunes you can use Convert ID3 Tags... None several times, then Convert ID3 Tags... v2.3. The process removes any embedded art but otherwise preserves the data that iTunes knows. You could use my script CreateFolderArt before and after to save and then restore the artwork.
In the long run you may be better off populating Album Artist properly with a copy of whatever is currently in Artist. My script CopyArtistToAlbumArtist can do this effectively.

I've added to ios6 to my new ipod touch with no problems. I'm trying to now restore the factory settings but the screen is frozen with an itunes sign and lead pointing towards it. The ipod won't even switch off. Can anyone help as it's driving me crazy

I've added ios6 to my new ipod but tried then to restore the factory settings. It won't extract any settings and the itunes then tells me that the server cannot be reached or is unavailable. I've been trying all day. Now the ipod has a itunes sign and a computer lead pointing towards it on the screen and this is frozen. It won't switch off or do anything else. Any ideas as this is now driving me crazy.

Try:
- iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
- Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

After having experienced similar problems and having it back to work, I have a few suggestions:
- Try to find out if the syncing stops at a particular track or song. That might - out of the blue - have gotten corrupted in one way or another. Since that song will not be on the iPod, iTunes will try over and over to put it on and crash in one way or another;
- reformat the iPod as described in the iTunes 9 crash-thread. It takes time (at first it seems to do nothing, but that is because the green bar is moving with very small steps);
