ITunes DRM M4V files

I'm looking for a way to use clips from an iTunes downloaded TV show in FCP. I need to use clips from these files to compile my steadicam reel. Any help on the Mac platform would help.

No better place to ask about breaking the DRM for a legal use.
As far as getting the footage, thats no problem once they release the DVD. That's the comfortable period of releasing footage for most projects, once they put it out in the stores on DVD. That's at least another three months away and does nothing for me getting work now off what was done two months ago. That's where the problem comes in. So, I'm buying the show from iTunes so that I can start to edit the new reel now with edits and audio instead of using the 640x368 DVR'd from my steadicam.
BTW, I'm still waiting for footage from other production companies over 2 years now...

  • Itunes U- M4V File Format- Wont play on Itouch?

I downloaded a few podcasts from the Itunes U, and I can't get them to play on my Itouch. Its in M4V file format. DO I need a special app? Can anyone help please?

Not ALL MP4 can play on the iPhone (or, for that matter, any phone). MP4 supports a wide variety of resolutions and bitrates that are simply outside the capacity of the device to play back (and for that matter, you can use some MP4 features that don't apply to phone playback).
Anyway, the simple thing to do in iTunes is to select the video and then go to the Advanced menu and select "Make iPad / iPhone version" (or something like that). Then, sync.
    Sepcifically, the iPhone 4 supports:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

  • .m4V files don't appear in iTunes until played from iTunes' 'Movies' folder

Some .m4v camcorder movie files (from a recent .avi conversion using Handbrake) just don't appear in my iTunes 'Movies' library until I double-click on them in the iTunes 'Movies' folder. Handbrake did the batch conversion and placed the converted files in the iTunes 'Movies' folder.
All of the converted files are visible in that 'Movies' folder of iTunes. And when I double-click them they play in an iTunes window. iTunes 'Movies' section seems unable to display them until they have first been played from the iTunes 'Movies' folder. Am I missing something about the way iTunes handles .m4v files?
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem? Any idea what the issue might be?
    Thanks.

    Problem.
I just tried turingtest2's suggestion and it didn't work.
I converted an H264 .mov file in Handbrake and output the conversion to the 'Automatically Add to iTunes' folder. But it was not added to iTunes - it ended up in the 'Not Added' folder and remained there until I played it from that location. Then it immediately turned up in iTunes 'Movies' folder.
The Handbrake conversion was to an 'Apple TV' compatible .m4v file.
Any idea what the problem might be?

  • .m4v file icons have become solid white in Finder under iTunes 10.6.3

    Hi there,
I just discovered this little annoyance... I thought I'd seen the last of it under a prior version of iTunes, but it may have come back.
iTunes video files (.m4v container files) have suddenly defaulted to a plain white icon in the Finder - desktop, folders, etc. - upon updating to iTunes 10.6.3.  The generic blue "notes" icon with "M4V" has disappeared, and will not reappear upon attempting to clear out the icon during a Get Info.
Strangely, if "Show icon preview" is checked under Finder's View Options, it will display any associated album art with the .m4v file correctly - it just so happens that something occurred with the default icons.
I rebuilt the Launch Services just in case, and these files by default still open with iTunes as per usual.  Checked for corrupt .plist files (even trashed com.apple.finder.plist) and cleared some caches out, ran maintenance scripts, etc. to cover any possible loose ends, but this issue is still present.
I recently upgraded to Lion 10.7.4 (long time SL holdout) but everything was normal under iTunes 10.6.2 - so I cannot determine whether this is a Lion issue or an iTunes issue.  I am going to post this in the iTunes forum as well, but has anyone else noticed this recently?  If so, what did you do to fix this?
    Thanks all,
    Steve

That's the point to where I was getting - without icon previews, the default icon for .m4v files should be the following:
(This was just taken from my wife's MacBook Pro, still on iTunes 10.6.2 but running Snow Leopard 10.6.8)
Under Lion (10.7.4) and iTunes 10.6.3, the default icon (no previews) is empty white, which I do not believe should be - I had the above generic icon for .m4v files in Lion under 10.6.2.
Yet iTunes-associated audio files are fine: (from my iMac)
    Strange, isn't it??

  • I have m4v files that have subtitles and sound options they play fine on my computer in itunes and but  when i watch them on my apple tv there is video but no sound ... why ?

I have m4v files that have subtitles and sound options they play fine on my computer in itunes and but  when i watch them on my apple tv there is video but no sound ... why ? all my other videos are fine and they in mp4 format.

Mov is a container format, you'd need to look at the codec used by the movie file inside the container to know whether it will work with the Apple TV or not.

  • I have many videos (m4v files) in iTunes library.  Are these now compatible with iCloud so that I can view them on iPad?

I have purchased over 100 concert DVDs over the years and have added them to my iTunes library as m4v files.  Are they now able to be loaded to iCloud so that they are accessible on my iPad without having to be on the same network as my Mac?

iCloud does not store or sync video that was not purchased in itunes.  Look into Dropbox for storing video there and syncing to an ipad.  Otherwise use the wired connection to the itunes computer to sync video (not wirelessly).

  • Only .m4v files crash computer in iTunes 7.2 and Vista

I am running Windows Vista and iTunes 7.2. The computer will crash constantly if I try to do anything to Library or sync to iPod, but ONLY if it involves a .m4v (video) file. If I remove those files, everything in iTunes and Vista work great. Introduce a .m4v file into it, and you get a blue sreen crash. What am I missing here? Is there an incompatability with iTunes 7.2 and Vista when working with .m4v files, or is there an update, or a plug-in needed? I can't find any info on this topic.

No. That is a Safari preference.

(By the way, would I need to use also the red and white phono cables also to get sound?)
Yes, S-video cables do not carry sound.
When you import 16:9 into DV Widescreen, make sure that you have UNchecked 'automatic letterboxing'.
In Preferences, is the project set to the correct standard?

  • QuickTime error 23132 with M4v files

i have QuickTime 7 on my system. It has always played my m4v files without problem (typically TV shows and movies bought on iTunes). So tonight I downloaded the latest itunes update (12.1). Everything works fine on iTunes but if I try to now view any of these m4v files in QuickTime it complains with error 23132 and won't play. Pretty irritating. Any ideas, I guess it's DRM related but seeing as my windows machine is authorised in iTunes etc there should be no issue. For what it's worth QuickTime plays MP4 files I have just fine so it's just the m4v files causing the error code. I did notice my QuickTime 7 wasn't latest version so I updated it to the latest, 7.7.6 or something along those lines. But made no difference.
i Am sure the iTunes 12.1 is the trigger here, has anyone else updated to the latest iTunes and now sees this issue in QuickTime with playing their legitimately purchased content?
i Guess it's not the end of the world as iTunes works normally and plays them just great but very occasionally I do like to use quicktime
    cheers

"Maybe this has something to do with the DMR restriction on files that you need to have each system with iTunes authorized with your account/id and password to verify you aren't copyrighting any files across systems, even though you are allowed to up to 5."
And that is the very reason I refuse to but Apple products, this assumption that you are guilty so they "restrict" what and how you can play something you have legally PAID for is outrageous.
Playing movies etc through iTunes is a huge pain because it takes up your who system and you can't do anything else while the playing. I have a two screen setup and when quicktime used to work it was on one screen and I could do things on the other, email etc. Now because this DOG quicktime doesn't work anymore iTunes blacks out the second screen when running a movie or TV show.
Just rubbish and I have bought my last item through itunes, I will pay more to buy an actual DVD so I'm not treated like a criminal and can play it on what and when I want.

  • I have created a .m4v file from iPhoto and would like to share it with someone else knowing that the file is quiet large (86 Mo), i used to share file with mobileme, how Can I do that with iCloud ? or another way....

In iphoto, I have create a diaporama which I exported to itunes as a m4v file. I would like to share this file with someone but it is too big to send it via email (84 Mo). This file is now in my films in itunes. Is there a way to share it via icloud.
I used to share files using mobileme which I cannot use anymore.
    Thanks for your help,

How recently did you switch?  If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account.  The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices.  I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

You could always point out that anyone whould really wants to watch it could download and install the free QT 7 Player in much the same way that many Mac users would have to download and install either a WMV Player or a WMV component for their QT Player.
You realize, of course, things will likely get worse once you start "customizing" your exports of each recipient? My Sister only wants WMV 9 ($50 for Microsoft "approved" bi-directional components), my brother-in-law "prefers" DivX 6 minimum ($20 for the components), my nieces are into YouTube (posted directly from iMovie '08 for the price of iLife '08) and want everything posted there, and my Aunt (whose computer is more than a decade old) only wants MPEG-1 (which I used to make with iVCD (don't remember what that used to cost or Ti Toast 9 at $80) and of course there is always Visual Hub (at just under $24) for all of the others who will settle for older AVI or WMV files. You can also try exporting some of the "less recent" or "older" codecs like MPEG-4/AAC, Sorenson Video, Sorenson 3 Video, H.263, Cinepak, etc. There are dozens of audio and video codecs that can be combined in in hundreds of combination and placed in various file containers but the problem is you will probably never find a single compression format that really satisfies everyone all of the time. So before anyone can "draw you a map," you will have to make a decision as to "down which road you wish to travel."

  • Is there a way to rebuild the ITunes Library XML file from my IPod?

After several promptings, I finally decided to install ITunes 7.4.3.1. Like a fool, I did not backup my entire library prior to doing this upgrade. Nothing is going to go wrong now mate, is it? Everything seemed to proceed just fine with the upgrade. I noticed that ITunes updated the XML Library in the process. Where the problems occured was after the upgrade, I was in the middle of listening to the latest "NPR Wait Wait Don't Tell Me" Podcast (I have some 3,000 downloaded podcasts in over 85GB worth of space) when ITunes crashed. When I brought ITunes back up, it had seemed to have reverted to an earlier backup ITunes Library XML file that I had made months ago.
I still have all of the .mp3, .m4a, .mp4 and .m4v files stored in my ITunes Music folder. Somehow when I brought ITunes back up, it had lost all of the music I had dowloaded from the ITunes store even though the files were still out on disk. It thought there were only 395 podcasts despite the 3,000 plus files out there.
Clearly, something went horribly wrong and I don't want to spend weeks downloading these files again when the only thing that really needs to be done is the ITunes Library XML data file needs to be rebuilt. It dawns on me that my IPod has an XML data file that save any updates I have not yet synced with it that it is quite current. Is there some way that I can sync my IPod with ITunes and copy the IPod XML data file into ITunes Library XML data file? I know that there must be some way to access the IPod since I can plug it into my Kenwood car stereo and read through the IPod's contents.
Is there anyone out there that has an idea that might be able to help me recover my ITunes library?
    Thanks for any assistance,
    --randyt00

The XML file is not used by iTunes. It is created for the use of other programs. Your library is in the itl file. SInce you still have the file you could simply add them to your library using the add folder option instead of downloading again.

I use to be able to play m4v files on both iTunes and Quick Time 7. Suddenly, after upgrading iTunes, I get error 23132 when trying to open a M4v file. How do I fix it to view the files on QuickTime?

There is software you installed to work with your company's cloud service, update it or talk to the developer.

  • IPod .m4v files improperly sized since upgrade

Just allowed the iTunes-Quicktime update a few days ago.
Purchased Quicktime Pro for producing iPod movies.
I just export my full sized movies (640 X 426)to an iPod movie (.m4v) (320 X 240) File. This has worked for several months until the update.
Since doing the upgrade, the iPod files rendered are the same size as the original file. No matter how I export them the
iPod .m4v files are still 640 X 426. Same as the original.
    Thanks for any assistance!

Since doing the upgrade, the iPod files rendered are the same size as the original file. No matter how I export them the iPod .m4v files are still 640 X 426. Same as the original. The "Movie to iPod" export option is adaptive delivering either H.264 "LC" or "Baseline" profiles depending on the source "current" display dimensions. If you want to "force" a "Baseline" profile conversion
    a) simply open the file in QT Pro,
    b) open the "Show Movie Properties" window,
    c) highlight the video track,
    d) go to the "Visual Settings" tab,
    e) enter a width of 320 with "Preserve Aspect Ratio" on and press the tab key to resize your source file, and
    f) convert the file as normal using the "Movie to iPod" export option
Or, if you prefer, you can always us the "Movie to Mpeg-4" export option to manually target your export options.
