Itunes duplicates all songs

Why does iTunes duplicate every single song on my MAC?  Sometimes 3 or 4 tiimes

Highlight a track, then press command+R to see to which file it points. Are they all the same file?
Look at the "kind" column. Are they all the same format?  If you import a CD as one format, then convert it to another it will result in two copies of the same track with each format.

  • ITunes duplicates all of the songs in my library when I try to import it

I haven't used iTunes for years.  I've just installed the latest iTunes on my computer and am trying to add songs from a previous library by dragging into iTunes.  Problem is, it carries out some sort of conversion on the files and, in the process, duplicates every song into the iTunes library.  Anybody know why, please?

Dragging over the old files if they are outside the designated iTunes Media folder is usually seen as a request to make local copies inside the iTunes Media folder.
Make sure you have updated to iTunes 11.0.1 (or later).
Enable the menu bar with ctrl-b if needed
Use Edit > Preferences > General > Show list views for all media
In Music use the Songs view, or select the List view for other media/playlists
Use View > Display Duplicates or, more usefully, hold Shift and use View > Display Exact Duplicates.
Keep one of each repeated group of files and don't send to the recycle bin unless you are sure that there are multiple files on the disc as opposed to multiple entries to the same file.
There is also my DeDuper script if you don't want to do it by hand. This can preserve ratings, play counts, playlist membership, etc. which are lost in a manual clean up. Please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping. See this thread for background on deduping and the script.

  • Upgraded iTunes and  all songs in music folder are duplicated

Recently upgraded to iTunes 10.1.1.4 and all songs are now duplicated. Any idea why this happened and is there an easy way to get rid of the duplicates? When I opened iTunes after the upgrade, it acted as though it was a new installation-asking questions about finding song files.

Something went wrong with the upgrade. itunes should not have asked about finding files on an upgrade.
For duplicates in the itunes program, sort by Date Added. Figure out which group is valid - either the oldest or newest, and delete whichever group that isn't needed. You can highlight the first and then hold the shift key to highlight the last, so you can delete the group all at once.
For duplicate on your hard drive, use Windows Explorer and Date Created/Modified the same way.

  • I purchased an album on iTunes and all songs downloaded, but one song is not associated with my Apple ID (I can't play it).

I bought an album from iTunes. All of the songs play except one. When I double click on it, a message comes up saying this computer is not authorized to play it, asking me if I want to authorize the computer. Yet when I log in with my ID, the response is that the computer is already authorized.  Then it skips to the next song. I have updated iTunes through software update and am using 11.0.4 (4). I have tried to reboot the computer but the situation stays the same.
I also deleted the file from iTunes to try re-downloading it. The song appears in my list of purchased songs, but when I try to download it again, I get an error message that says "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID. If you download past purchases with your Apple ID, you cannot auto download or download past purchases with a different Apple ID for 90 days." My options at this point are a "Transfer" button or a "Cancel" button. Transfer what? What is it talking about?? I purchased and downloaded the complete album at once, obviously with the same Apple ID---the ONLY Apple ID I have ever had and the ONLY Apple ID ever used on this computer! How is one song mysteriously associated with a different account? What is the point of purchasing music legally if it doesn't work? Can anyone help me get this song to play in iTunes? The other strange thing is that it plays just fine in finder.
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

If only one track on the album is throwing that message, that suggests the track is damaged.
If your country's iTunes Store allows you to redownload purchased tracks, I'd delete your current copy of the track and try redownloading a fresh one. See the following document for instructions:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
Otherwise, I'd report the problem to the iTunes Store.
Log in to the Store. Click on "Account" in your Quick Links. When you're in your Account information screen, go down to Purchase History and click "See all".
Find the item that is not playing properly. If you can't see "Report a Problem" next to the item, click the "Report a problem" button. Now click the "Report a Problem" link next to the item.

  • Ipod nano (6th gen), appears under devices in itunes and all songs play properly. Upon ejecting from PC, ipod says 0 songs but still 14gb/14.88 have been used up. What is the problem here?

Pretty much what I asked in the question. Plugged the ipod back into the PC and it still works fine under Devices in itunes and all the songs re-appear here again. Havent been syncing with any different computers

I requested that your post by moved to the iPod Nano forum. This is the iPod touch forum.

  • Why Itunes duplicates all of my songs ?

    Hi
I have downloaded and uninstalled Itunes and I still have same songs showing 2 and 3 times
    How can I correct this?
    Thanks

Because, in some way, you have inadvertently told it to...
Apple's official advice is here... HT2905 - How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls, such as lost ratings or playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed)

  • ITunes duplicates each song in my library

Hi, I just upgraded my iTunes and I'm not sure if that affected my library or if it was another thing. But now all the songs in my library are duplicated and I don't know if I will have to delete each one of the duplicated songs, one by one.. or if there is a way to do it easier.
Is this a bug of the new version?
Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

In iTunes go to View~Show duplicates. The click one song, then press Ctrl A and delete from computer.

  • How do I move iTunes and all songs to new computer without loosing ratings?

I recently purchased a new computer and have been trying to migrate everything to it. I downloaded Itunes to my new computer and moved all music on to the new computer. While I have successfully set up iTunes on the new computer (including setting the proper iTunes Music folder location under Edit/Preferences/Advanced/General), I cannot find a way to import ALL (Over 60 gig) of music into iTunes. The best I have been able to figure out is to add each individual folder from an artist to the library (this would be a HUGE amount of time!) and in so doing I would loose ALL the time I have spent rating songs (very important to me for My Top Rated). Is there a way to import all music on a specific drive into iTunes AND keep the preferences from the prior computer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

  • IPod says there's no music - iTunes shows all songs are there

I have a 160 gig iPod Classic that has over 14,000 songs on it and 200+ smart playlists (I leave about 400 meg free for any "new" CD I might get).
Yesterday morning, I added several additional smart playlists from iTunes and ejected my iPod. I waited until the screen said "OK to Disconnect" and took the iPod off of the USB charger/connector, but noticed that the screen didn't change. Soon a white line started appearing along the bottom from left to right so I figured it was updating it's database (similar to how iTunes does that sometimes after you exit). I waited and waited after the line was all the way to the right and, after about 20 minutes, rebooted the iPod. When things finally were back to what looked like normal, the iPod didn't do anything.
Later in the day I reconnected it back to iTunes and iTunes said everything was still there on the iPod so I ejected and waited for it to return to normal - which it did. I go into Playlists to start one up and the screen says "No Playlists." I tried the other categories and they all said "No [category]" as well.
Anyway, last night I bit the bullet and did a "Restore" on the iPod from within iTunes (which, of course, wiped out everything on the iPod). I then spent SEVEN HOURS getting everything back the way it was (I have about 200 gig worth of songs so I can't copy everything and there HAS to be a better way to copy smart playlists - something for a separate post I guess). At this point I had all the playlists copied again plus about half the music. I made one final temporary playlist that would import the remaining songs while I slept and, finally, went to bed.
This morning I ejected the iPod, went and had breakfast to give it plenty of time to update itself then, once it was back to normal, I tried it and... "No Playlists," "No Artists," etc. Needless to say I wanted to yell and break things (but I didn't) - I don't have a lot of time to be dealing with this issue right now, but I work from home and need music playing in the background...
Now, here are the weird parts. A couple of album covers from my collection are scrolling across the iPod screen (I try to avoid having covers since I need all the room I can for music - I didn't even know I had any!). Back in iTunes I can not only see all of my smart playlists on the iPod, but all of my songs too AND I can play them off of the iPod from within iTunes.
I'm going to try removing some of the playlists because that's when it worked last and because I don't know what else to try.
Does anyone know why I'm getting this condition and how to fix it?
    Thanks.
    Craig B.

Ok, after trying a couple of other things (without success), I finally deleted all of the playlists as a test and the iPod works again.
So... That means that there is a limit to the number of playlists you can have on an iPod!
Does anyone happen to know how many you can have? (I.e, what IS the limit?)

  • ITunes duplicates random songs when importing

I recently just reorganized my music library to get rid of some of the duplicate songs, but when I deleted, then reimported my songs, itunes randomly duplicated probably about 1k songs, and I don't know why. Is there a way to prevent Itunes from doing that or do I just have to go through and manually take them out?

If you are in a country where re-downloading is possible (iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match Availability by Country - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5085), delete the track (and the original file) and download again (Downloading [using iOS or computer] past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2519).  See tips on downloading in https://discussions.apple.com/message/19097773, especially unchecking the "Allow Simultaneous Downloads" box in the downloads tab of iTunes.
Select the store on the left side of iTunes.
Click on Purchased on the right side under Quick Links.
You can re-download your available previous purchases.
If you cannot download a second time, contact iTunes Store support staff through the report a problem links in your account history or,
iTunes Customer Service Contact - http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact.html > Get iTunes support via Express Lane > iTunes > iTunes Store
Incomplete playback seems to be reported several times a day here.  I don't recall this happening before iTunes 10. I would suggest posting feedback to Apple so they aware of an issue.

  • ITunes Duplicating all Songs

Everytime I rename a song in itunes it makes two copies of the song one that is renamed and one original. So far it completely duplicated my entire library so as opposed to having 3 gigs of music i have 6 gigs. Is there a simple way to fix this without having to see which specific songs are duplicated and delete each individually?
    Thanks

Everytime I rename a song in itunes it
How are you renaming the songs?

  • Why won't iTunes record all songs I tell it to onto an MP3 disc?

    Latest version of iTunes....
When I try to record an MP3 disc using either MP3 CD or Data CD (my car stereo handles both just fine) the final disc has some songs skipped and cuts out around track number 40. And, just to make life interesting, the players I drop the discs into will sometimes insist on skipping tracks. (i.e. will refuse to play or recognize songs 24, 26, 28, 30, 33, 35, 37, etc...)
If I copy the MP3 files to a pure data CD using any program except iTunes, it burns and plays fine.
I can't even begin to come up with possible causes for this glitch. Any ideas?

sadly  Apple does not allow you to gift using iTunes Store credit
that's just the way it works I have tried myself and I know it doesn't let you
