Itunes duplicates solved.

Ok so I think i've found a way to remove all duplicates leaving the original file in itunes.
Normally when you have an exact duplicate file with the exact name, it should be overwritten.
In itunes case, the duplicate file is written with a number at the end of the name.
For example.   original..  song.mp3   duplicate.. song2.mp3
If you have duplicates with the same exact name, then this probably won't help.
Open itunes, > view > press+hold alt key > show exact duplicates.
Highlight all and move to trash.
Create new folder on desktop.
Open trash and copy all songs to new folder
Open new desktop folder with songs from trash,
Type in the search bar on top right,  2.mp3
Select only the selcted folder to search in, and not the entire computer
Select all songs found, and move to trash.
Repeat step if you have a triplecate song but this time type,  3.mp3
Once all duplicate songs have been deleted, close and reopen folder,
Highlight all songs, and open  in itunes.
Then click view>show duplicates.
If any are there, delete them manually. (should be none)
Done.
PS. Don't forget to click "show all items" at the bottom of itunes to see your songs.

All of my iTunes music is in the same directory (though it may have been in separate directories -- can't recall whether I moved it -- would have been a long time ago).  That directory is:
Free-standing hard drive\iTunes
That iTunes directory is filled with both individual tracks and folders containing tracks.
When I am using iTunes, the amount of music shown at the bottom of the screen is much less than the size of the iTunes directory.  If I look through the iTunes directory, I can see many duplications.  I'm reluctant to delete any duplication b/c I don't know whether that will delete the one that iTunes uses to play the music.
Your advice is not to fool with the iTunes directory, so I will stay away from that.
Thanks!  Jonathan C. McCall

    Hi bluebanana 66,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
There are a few reasons why you might receive this message after installing iTunes. You may need to verify that iTunes has been completely removed before trying to install again. See this article for the steps to completely remove and reinstall iTunes:

  • Itunes duplicate folder

I did a scan on my computer to get rid of my duplicates.  In my music folder, there is a file that says 'itunes duplicates'.  Will it hurt to delete this folder?

  • Itunes duplicates all songs

Why does iTunes duplicate every single song on my MAC?  Sometimes 3 or 4 tiimes

Highlight a track, then press command+R to see to which file it points. Are they all the same file?
Look at the "kind" column. Are they all the same format?  If you import a CD as one format, then convert it to another it will result in two copies of the same track with each format.

    itunes duplicates my music library

If you are on Version 11.0.1 rather than 11 Apple put it back in
    View > Show Duplicates
Option + View > Show Exact Duplicates
so if you are on 11 upgrade to 11.0.1 and you will have it

  • Itunes duplicate message

    Hello all,
Has anyone ever heard of this issue?
It started when I clicked on my iTunes, got this weird message that something was up with that and I now have to go to iTunes duplicate...I don't know what I'm doing, so I clicked okay. It was blank, no songs that I had downloaded. Then heard my hard drive making the weird whirring noises. After I did the force shut down...tried to click on iTunes again, it came up, again blank, no songs, and then this really weird clear dark blind started coming down, top to bottom, on my monitor, like pulling the shades in a window but you could see through it, and then this other weird message came up saying that iTunes - sorry.
I am trying to help a friend of mine. This is on an Ibook computer I beleive.
I appreciate any input you might offer.
    Thanks
    Jon

  • I have over 10K worth of iTunes duplicates!

Okay, folks, this is pretty ridiculous.
Using the latest iTunes I imported my new, cleaned up library on my new computer into it and now I have over 10K worth of duplicates -- true duplicates, not duplicate files, not duplicate songs in other albums, just duplicated songs that iTunes somehow creates (but Media Monkey handles correctly).  Frankly, I'd dump iTunes in a hot NY minute if I didn't need it to sync to my phones and iPads, but since I do I need to figure out how to get it to work right.
I've deleted all the songs and tried relinking them without success.  My next bet is to try letting iTunes copy them over to the library and manage the music itself (which I'd rather not do but will if anyone thinks it will solve the problem).  This is pretty obviously a bug but one I suspect is not unique -- how are folks handling this?

    Hi Mike.
The key word here may be "imported". If you move the library between computers properly then everything should be in place when you open iTunes with no need to import anything. Depending on what has been done it may be easier to move over the library again in a way that doesn't create issues. See this migrate iTunes library post for more details and strategies for when the library isn't in the usual layout. Otherwise read on...
Apple's official advice on duplicates is here... HT2905: How to find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin. (What you're calling real duplicates and I call logical duplicates.)
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Itunes Duplicate issue (not covered in FAQ)

OK, So I have had duplicate problems before but this is  first for me.
When I look at my collection in list it doesn't show any duplicates but when I look at it in Shows my TV show seasons are showing up muliple times. In the past I have had problems with them being split into multiple displays but this was easily fixed by ensuring the sorting data was in alignment. This time it is actually showing up more than once. which is quite odd? anyone know how to solve this?

In principle TV Shows are grouped on the Show field and within a show sub-grouped on Season No. In practice recent builds of iTunes and/or Apple TV firmware seem to be taking account of Album, Artist & Album Artist in certain views. For consistency I therefore suggest the following approach:
    Show = Album = <Show Name>
    e.g. "Heroes"
Artist = Album Artist = <Show Name> or <Show Name> Cast (or something like that)
    e.g. "Heroes Cast"
Season No. = <Season No.> or <Blank> (Separate seasons or all listed together)
    e.g. 1-2
Episode ID = s##e## (This field, sorted alphabetically, controls order)
    e.g. s01e01 - s02e34 (use s##e### when >99 episodes)
    Episode No. = Track No. = <Absolute Episode No.>
(Can also be per season, but abs. is better) e.g. 1 - 34
Disc No. = <Season No.> (Can be set even if merging seasons)
    e.g. 1-2
Taking this approach you can always merge or split into individual seasons simply by clearing or setting the Season No. field.
    or
For general tips on organizing media in iTunes see Grouping tracks into albums. Note that sort fields should not be used to link things with different main values.

  • Itunes duplicates and removes songs

    Hello all!
I'm having some problems with iTunes for a while now. I'd like to use the feature that all my imported songs are automatically positioned in the iTunes folder i've specified and that iTunes then renames those files and neatly puts them in folders. This seems to work just fine.
However, although I know for sure I have not been importing new music for a while now, sudden duplicate songs keep popping up. Complete albums will duplicate itself and I keep spending time to remove those additional songs. They keep coming back!
Simoultaneously I've noticed that from some albums that are still intact on my iPod (I sync manually...) suddenly some songs seem to dissapear! For example on some albums I'd suddenly miss song 3, 6, 7, 9 and 11 out of 13.
Does anybody else notice the same problems? It doesn't seem safe to use iTunes at all to organize my music collection...

Rule 1. Backup, then if something truly goes missing you can fetch it back again.
    Rule 2. Don't ignore Rule 1.
iTunes doesn't appear to do any reorganizing of tracks except when you actively edit tags or, if some third party tool has made a change, when it has cause to read the data, say during playback. If a file is removed from the drive iTunes should retain an entry to it which it will flag up with an exclamation mark if it ties to access the track. Likewise iTunes doesn't scan your drives for new tracks so duplicates should only be generated if you actively reimport the same content.
To make sure Windows Media Player is leaving your content alone take a look at this post.
For help with duplicates see my DeDuper script and this thread for background on it.

  • Does iTunes duplicate mp3 files I import, thus doubling space used on mac?

    Hello.
May be a silly question, but here goes:
When I import mp3's onto my mac (from my old computer), i put them all into one folder..
when i double click to play, they automatically play through itunes.. now i've noticed that itunes NOW ALSO creates a duplicate folder/file of those tunes that I have now played through iTunes, (in "user" > Music > iTunes > iTunes Music)...
does this mean that there are now 2 copies of the mp3 on my hardrive, therefore taking up space?? I'm not entirely sure - but would not be happy if every song actually takes up twice the amount of space...
    Any help??
    Thanks everyone!
    Johnny

I'm having a similar problem. Just installed iTunes, first iPod product, and my file usage has dwindled by the size of the music files. They've all been doubled, it looks like. Where is this located, and how can I be sure not to move/delete the wrong ones?
Or, where is the setting to stop this, and if I change the setting do I need to re-install iTunes to get rid of the wasted file space?
    Thanks.
