Itunes encoding question . . 320 CRB aac vs 256 VBR aac

320 is top dog in aac as mp3. but in VBR mode it only goes to 256. I have googled this and read to no end, and no one has yet to compare these. I rip everything in 320 CBR aac but think it would be nice to have VBR . . will the 256 VBR sound better then the 320 CBR i have been using or am i still best off with that.
I do not want mp3, i want the newer aac codec, and i do not want to rip using somehting other then itunes, just curious what people thing about those 2 choices and why 320 cant be VBR in itunes??

I rip everything in 320 CBR aac
Probably overkill.
I doubt you could hear any difference between 320 AAC CBR vs. AAC 256 VBR (and possibly lower).
But the file size would be reduced by a lot.
Find a CD with a lot of dynamic range and RIP it a few different ways.
Compare the file size to how it sounds and see what works for you.

  • AAC Encoder at 320 kbps...

    Hello all,
I'm new to the forum. I've had to erase my hard drive and ipod of everything so I've lost over 3,000 songs and have to re-import all of my music
The question is: I am assuming AAC Encoder at 320 kbps is the absolute best sound quality that I am going to get? I will be playing my music through my vehicle speakers and I want near CD sound quality!!!
The other question is: What can you tell me abou the other selections of encoders for importing?... I've searched the forums and haven't found anything, nor did I find a itunes manual.
    Thank you all!!!

WAV and AIFF both are uncompressed audio formats.
WAV is mainly used on the Windows platform and AIFF on the MAC platform.
These formats can be read and edited by virtually all players and audio editors.
There's one disadvantage. They produce huge files of about 10 MB/minute of audio.
To reduce file sizes, people invented compression techniques.
Some of them succeeded in creating a codec (encoder/decoder) that will retain all audio information but reduce the file size to about half the size of WAV and AIFF.
Examples of these are Apple Lossless and FLAC (not supported by iTunes).
Your iPod (except the iPod Shuffle) supports WAV, but it will quickly fill up with those huge files.
Like Chris suggested, you should rip a song at different bit rates and try to determine what is best for your situation.
It all depends on your ears (hearing) and your playback system.
In my car, I can't even hear improvements above 128 kbps AAC.

  • Quality of iTunes encoding vs. LAME

    Hi all,
I have ripped a lot of my CDs to Apple Lossless and am now rapidly running out of space.
I have tried re-encoding them to AAC and MP3 at various settings and cannot hear a great deal of difference between them, if any!
I have a Creative Soundworks 730 CD/Radio and use AirTunes to stream music.
I also listen to MP3 CDs in the car (player cannot play AAC files).
So, I want to encode everything using the highest quality MP3 file possible for maximum compatibility and to prevent having to convert between formats and have several copies tracks for various uses. It's an administrative nightmare!
So... how do I get the best MP3 possible? LAME used to be considered the best MP3 encoder, but how does it stand up with recent updates to CoreAudio/Quicktime encoder?
Shall I just encode in iTunes or use an application that uses LAME?
    Thanks!
    John
PS. Is AAC really that much better than MP3? I have read conflicting things.

Mp3 (320 kbps) is the best, if you still want 100% CD quality, than try WAV or Apple Lossless - they offer the best bitrate upto 1600 kbps. but the file sizes can vary from 40MB for a 4 mins song to 110 MB for a 10 mins song.
MP3 320 KBPS, seems like a wise choice. however it's upto you.
Thanks for your reply. However, I understand all your points already! My question was more to do with whether the latest iTunes MP3 encoder was any worse than LAME, and if it was worth using a Mac app such as iTunes-LAME to encode the tracks.
LAME is far slower, if it offers no real advantage over iTunes encoder, then I won't bother!
And, I'm curious if AAC has any advantage over MP3, particularly at >192kbps bit rates.

  • How to encode music to Protected AAC file?

How to encode music to Protected AAC file?

    Hi, 微雨轻韩.
That is not an option with iTunes.
Only files purchased from the iTunes Store are protected by Fairplay. Apple doesn't license its use for anything else.

  • ITunes 11 MP3/320  -  Joint or normal stereo for best quality ? Thanks!

iTunes 11   encoding MP3 @ 320  -    Joint or normal stereo for best quality ?    Thanks!

OK, I digged a bit deeper.......
Apparently, the common LAME MP3 encoder uses JOINT mode throughout bitrates ...... ( have a look at the wikipedia pages for MP3/joint stereo)
This leads to a) smaller files and/or  b) gives or frees up "bandwidth for signal encoding when/if necessary.
The iTunes encoders algorithms are unknown, thus we need Apple to help with this issue.
If   "normal"  = separate stereo, i.e. separate encoding of the left and right audio channel, then there might be rather a quality loss despite high bitrates and large files, because that would mean using 160kbps/channel only , as MP3s are limited to 320.
Until Apple does not specify and explain this in detail, I myself will no longer use iTunes for encoding.
(  @keeferaf, many thanks, in "userdefined-MP3-encoding" you can select those  values  )

  • Quicktime 7.6 breaks itunes encoding (win xp)

    Hi
Upgraded to QT player 7.6 and now iTunes encoder stopped working. If I want to transcode anything (even ALAC) to AAC , it gives this error:
"the current encoder settings for bit rate and samplig rate are not valid for this file"
If I change the encoder settings, same thing happens, still gives the error.
I am using iTunes 7.1.1.5 , a bit old but it should work. It did work 10 minutes ago before I upgraded QT player.
    Any ideas?
Maybe this should be a bug report
    Thanks
    Gonzalo

    Thanks Kyn Drake
No, they are two separate programs. One calls the other, that´s all. APIs should remain stable
    Thanks QTQuirk
Well, I don't want to be a PITA, but now thay you ask...Yes I considered updating itunes a long time ago, but I chose not to. Its getting bigger and bigger with things I don't need since I have an older ipod 5 gen. But that's not what really bothered me... I got really upset when Apple decided that A comes before numbers when sorting. Since when letters come before numbers? I've been using computers since 1983 with the AppleII and now suddenly apple decides to change sorting??? So I decided that I wanted to stick with iTunes 7.1, the last version that sorts correctly.
btw, now it seems that I finally do need to upgrade iTunes ..or downgrade QT..
    Cheers, thanks for your replies

  • HT1399 my itunes library is stored as .aac files how can i convert them all together to mp3

my itunes library is stored as .aac files how can i convert them all together to mp3

Thanks for the quick response. I didn't think of that. I just tried several songs, and it DOES work as you say. Except iTunes downloaded the identical 128 kbps protected files again. These are 90's - "10,000 Maniacs" tracks.
So does this mean Apple doesn't have my "10,000 Maniacs" high bit rate unprotected files available? Then why would anyone even buy any songs through the "iTunes" store, when Amazon sells only 256 kbps MPEG music files, at a little cheaper price than Apple?
I'm missing something. The tracks I want to upgrade are available at Amazon in the higher bit rate format. Maybe iTunes is annoyed at me for using "Windows" on a PC and an "Android" phone?
    Thanks again.

  • Upgraded to iTunes Plus-Question

I just upgraded to iTunes Plus (8.0.2.20) and was under the impression that this would allow me to use my Sansa mp3 player with iTunes. Is this correct or did I misunderstand. iTunes does not recognize my player and I have purchased the upgrades for my library. Any help is apprectiated.

Upgrading to a new version of the iTunes program does not cause your songs to get upgraded to iTunes Plus.
iTunes Plus songs are in AAC format. Depending which model of Sansa you have it may or may not play the AAC files. If not, use iTunes to convert them to MP3.
The iTunes program cannot be used to load the Sansa. You probably have to use Windows Media Player. Follow the directions that came with the player.

  • HT1473 I get a message the songs are in wma format and iTunes will convert them to AAC format - do I select Convert or Skip?

I get a message the songs are in wma format and iTunes will convert them to AAC format - do I select Convert or Skip. I ripped new CDs I bought using Windows Media Player and they are saved on my C drive. I have done this before but cannot do it now.

If you want to play them in iTunes, choose "Convert."  This will allow iTunes to create new AAC versions and add those new versions to your iTunes library.
The original WMA files will still be in the folder(s) wherever they currently are.  iTunes will ignore the WMAs once it has the converted versions.  It is then up to you if you wish to keep or delete your WMA origninals.

  • H1 footage & premiere deinterlace encoder questions.

    Hi all,
I recorded some footage on a H1 in 60i HD (HDV). Used Premiere CS3 preset HDV 1080i 30 (60i) to capture it.
    Capture question...
    1. Should i buy cineform aspect or prospect HD to convert it before editing in premiere CS3?
    Adobe media encoder questions...
    2. Should i deinterlace the footage first by selecting "Deinterlace" in the from the output tab?
I was reading some adobe livedocs info that its a good idea to do so, even though canon says their 60i, 30f, 24f is as good as progressive.
    3. should i choose "HDTV 1080i 29.97 High Quality" or "1440 x1080i 29.97 High Quality"?
The H1 captured output from tape is 1440x1080i. The encoder HDTV preset outputs 1920x1080, the other preset obviously outputs 1440x1080.

    1. I use Cineform with great results and would indeed convert it to cineform BEFORE editing. It converts the 4:2:0 colorspace to 4:2:2 and is better to edit with, along with the fact it also coverts long GOP to almost a frame based compressin.
    2. Cineforms method of "deinterlaceing" is different than Adobe's.
I have tried both. It seems that Cineforms is better. There is a LONG post under HDV to SD conversion. Read it.
But, it seems to me that if you keep it interlaced, motion seems smoother and more natural.
Adam Wilt did a good review of the HL and stated that the "F" frames are really progressive frames made from interlaced CCD's. The frames do lose a little vertical resolution.
I would either shoot in F and keep it there, or shoot in I and keep it there.
