"itunes encountered a problem and needed to close" - help plz

I've been using itunes for a while but when my sister got a new ipod she wanted the upgraded program so i downloaded the new program on top. It worked until we rebooted the computer and since then it would come up with an error. Afterwards, I uninstalled the program and reinstalled itunes 7.0, but when we went to open the program it said it couldn't read the itunes library, so i then deleted those files and now instead it says "itunes encountered a problem and needed to close" whenever i try to open it. Can someone please tell me what to do?

wanpedro I tried what you suggested but have again got nowhere.I tried to uninstall QuickTime it just wont.I uninstalled iTunes & reinstalled it with QuickTime from Apple website.I'm back to where I was with the error message
"iTunes & Quicktime have encountered a problem & need to close tell Microsoft about this problem" When one does that there is no feedback from MS With Qucktime uninstall a message says Fatal error on installation.

  • Is anyone else getting the " itunes encountered a problem and needs to close " message on xp

is anyone else getting the " itunes encountered a problem and needs to close " message on windows XP

I did get a "server busy" message when I loaded quicktime, but I'm not sure if it is related or not since I've been seeing that over the last couple of days, I can't remember if it came before iTunes stopped working or not. That message reads "This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose 'switch to' to activate the busy program and correct the problem." My options then are to choose switch to or retry. When I press "switch to" my Start menu opens, and nothing appears to happen when I select retry.
that's an odd sort of a message (or series of messages).
hmmmmm. let's try an experiment aimed at working out if there's a program interfering with the QuickTime (which is in turn causing grief with your iTunes).
try a selective startup using MSCONFIG, with just the itunes and QuickTime background processes enabled, as per the following document:
Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows
does QT open without the strange message after the selective startup?
    does iTunes launch properly?

  • "error Report" "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" HELP!!

every time i try to load itunes i get this message
"error Report" "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close". i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. i tried removing quicktime through my control pannel and then reinstalling. ive tried running scans and pretty much anything else i can think of. at this point i might just return the ipod. anyone have any ideas.

Have you tried uninstalling Quicktime? If not try that. If you are still having problems then do this.
    1. Uninstall both iTunes and Quicktime.
    2. Delete the folders iTunes and Quicktime where installed in.
    3. Reboot.
    4. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<<Your User ID>>\Application Data\Apple Computer\
    5. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\<<Your User ID>>\Local Settings\Application Data\Apple Computer
    6. Delete if in your My Documents folder there is a folder called My Music with a folder in it called iTunes. Delete or rename the iTunes folder.
    7. Reboot.
    8. Turn off all anti virus and firewall software.
    9. Re-install iTuens.
If you still get an error after that your Windows install is hosed. You will need to format and re-install it first.

  • ITunes "encountered a problem and needs to close" error

hey guys and gals, i really need help. i've been trying to fix my iTunes software for months now. Without further ado, here's what happened:
    installed itunes
    deleted quicktime accidently
    installed quicktime
    installed itunes
    itunes still doesn't work
installed and reinstalled multiple times from both the c.d. and itunes.com
Therefore, when i attempt to open my itunes program, the dialoge box stating, "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. Send error report, dont send."
the details of the error report are:
"information regarding the condition of iTunes when the problem occured; the operating system version and computer hardware in use; your digital product id, which could be used to identify your license; and internet protocol(ip) address of your computer.

for the love of god, help me. i really wanna get my itunes working.(i have no antivirus software, such as mcaffee or norton, etc)
    i really appreciate it

great, but when i did this, the agreement popped up and disappeared as soon as it came up, before i could press anything.
yuck. that's consistent with a malware infestation problem that has been causing error-less itunes launch failures since late October. but there's another couple of main possibilities that we have to check on for these "error-less" launch failures. let's try to firm up the diagnosis a bit.
    first let's make an observation.
reboot your PC. open Task Manager to the Processes Tab. now try to launch itunes again.
does an itunes.exe process appear in Task Manager? if so, does it persist in there, or disappear after a few seconds?
if itunes.exe persists in Task Manager
do you have Norton Internet Security 2005? if so, first see:
iTunes 6 won't open on a Windows computer if firewall software is not up-to-date
... but if no joy with that, try the trusty Lorraine M technique:
    Lorraine M: NIS/itunes problem rectified
... but if you don't have NIS 2005 (or symptoms persist), check up on this possibility:
iTunes for Windows doesn't open after upgrading
if itunes.exe doesn't appear in Task Manager (or disappears after a few seconds)
then we have to check up on the malware possibilities.
(this is not a cure, it's a final diagnostic.) use MSCONFIG to get iTunes launching again:
Using MSCONFIG to troubleshoot conflicts in Windows
after the selective startups, don't launchother applications prior to opening itunes. (this has been known to re-trigger the launch suppression.)
post back with a list of the Startup items that you needed to disable in order for itunes to launch again. exact spelling and capitalisation please.

  • Itunes encountered a problem and needs to close

Can't launch itunes. Get message "iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close".
Bought ipod for Xmas. Had old laptop that didn't have adequate USB. Finally bought new Dell and installed (Disc was version 5). Downloaded version 6 and haven't been able to open since.
Have tried uninstall, disabling virus/firewall and downloading again. Same result.
Although I've never gotten the system operational, when I call Apple they say the 90 day period has expired and it will cost $50 to discuss it.
    Any easy fix?
    Dell Laptop   Windows XP Pro

The first thing I'd suggest is to get a good antispyware checker and give it a go at your system. Some recent spyware has been reported by other users to shut down iTunes or prevent it from launching. From user reports, Ewido seems to be the best at catching it. You can download a free version of Ewido here.
If that doesn't cure the problem, try deleting the iTunes preference files:
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
    and
    C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Data\Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iTunes.pref
You might have to turn on "show hidden files" to find them. (Right click "my computer", select open, select Tools menu -> Folder Options. Select View tab, "show hidden files" radio button is in the center scrolling panel.) Delete them or if you want to be able to put them back if it doesn't help, drag them to some other location. This will force iTunes to run the setup assistant the next time you launch iTunes. Note that you'll have to go back and set any preferences you've changed from the default.
Hope this helps. If not, you might try this:

  • ITunes Encountered a problem and needs to close on startup

    Hi -
I'm running the latest version of iTunes (7.1.1.5) on a desktop computer with Windows XP (SP2) and I've had no problems with it up until today. After using iTunes fine yesterday, I tried to open it up today and I get a Windows error message saying "iTunes has encountered an problem and needs to close" on startup before the iTunes window even pops up at all. I've tried uninstalling and re-installing iTunes as well as replacing the library files with those from another computer (sometimes the ones on this computer get corrupted). But neither of those have changed anything, I still get the same message every time, no matter what I try or how many times I restart. Any and all help is greatly appreciated and I can provide any additional information that might be helpful.

  • During iPhone 4 update or restore, "iTunes encountered a problem and needs to close." Help?

I have the latest version of iTunes, version 10.3. Every time I try to update or restore my iPhone 4, iTunes crashes and gives me the error message "Itunes encountered a problem and needs to shut down." I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes and Quicktime, but no dice. My phone is stuck in a recovery mode loop, and I need to restore it in order to fix it because tinyumbrella, iRecovery, iReb, and RecBoot all didn't work. It just boots back up in recovery mode again. I need to get my iTunes fixed so I can save my phone. Please help.
    Here is the error signature:
    AppName: itunes.exe        AppVer:10.3.1.55     ModName: msvcrt.dll
    ModVer: 7.0.2600.5512     Offset: 000372e3

No, no luck. I went to the Apple store to get my phone out of the recovery loop, but iTunes still crashes whenever I try to sync it or download any large files. I was lucky to get my backup of my phone put into the phone so I didn't lose all my contacts and everything. All I know about the error message is that it has to deal with there being a problem during iTunes interacting with that .dll file. Either the file is corrupt, or the latest version of iTunes works with a different version of that file. I can't figure out how to fix it.

Perform a Thorough & Complete Uninstall and Reinstall of iTunes/QuickTime
(Compiled from the collective wisdom of toonz and Da Gopha)
If you want to guarantee a successful upgrade and be proactive about minimizing potential install issues, do the following:
    1. Completely Backup your music and iTunes library files.
    2. Virus check / spyware scan your machine.
    3. Completely remove / uninstall the current version of iTunes and QuickTime from your system.....
3a. - Turn off all security software such as Norton, McAfee, SpySweepers, any TSRs, etc. (exit via the system tray)
3b. - Do a Stepwise clean uninstallation of iTunes
3c. - Then download and install the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility
.....And make sure iTunes is really gone.
    4. Delete the contents of your temp folder: C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp
    5. Reboot the PC
    6. Turn off all security software such as Norton, McAfee, SpySweepers, any TSRs, etc. (exit via the system tray)
    7. Start with the QuickTime standalone installer run from the PC (not directly from on-line)
    8. Reboot the PC
    9. Turn off all security software such as Norton, McAfee, SpySweepers, any TSRs, etc. (exit via the system tray)
    10. First completely download, then run the latest iTunes Installer from your PC
    11. Reboot the PC
The majority of problems out there on the discussion boards are caused by viruses or other system corruption — sometimes self-inflicted by the user (i.e. - people who turn off necessary Windows services) — or out of date drivers. You may want to consider this if your PC falls into one of these categories.

  • My error reads.."itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close" help!

I deleted everything and tried to re-install off the mac site. Install seemed to finish just fine. When I click the icon, I get this error. It says for more info click here, I do and it says:Error signature:
AppName: itunes.exe AppVer: 6.02.23 ModName: unknown
    ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 656d954
Anyone have any idea whats up?
    Thanks!

    hiya!
if you're getting that error message when you try to launch itunes, the first thing i check for is a broken QuickTime.
does your QuickTime currently launch when you try to open it? or do you get an error message?
if you get an error message when you try to launch your QuickTime, we'll first try a careful standalone QT 7.0.4 reinstall.
download and save a copy of the QT 7.0.4 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.0.4 Standalone Installer
if the standalone QT reinstall goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly after that?

  • ITunes has encountered a problem and needs to close -BUT IT NEVER OPENS!!!!

Had to do a system restore and lost some applications. Reinstalled ITunes, but now everytime I try to open ITunes I get a message that says ITunes encountered a problem and needs to close. It never opens though! I have uninstalled and re-installed too many times to count. I opened the error message and this is what is being sent to Microsoft (c:/Dounme~\Owner\LOCALS~1|Temp\WER97.tmp.dir00\appcompat.txt) Does anyone know what this means and how I can fix it?????

I would go through a complete uninstall and reinstall once again. This time, follow go to kbase 93976 (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976). Look under the 'General Installation Troubleshooting' section, and start by going through the uninstall (including leftover files in Program Files and system32). After that, go through the section on using the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility, and remove all Apple software that shows up.
Hopefully that should get it working.

When I click on my Itunes icon a big box pops up and says Itunes has encountered a problem and needs to close. Sorry for the inconvenience. And says tell microsoft about the problem, you know. And I've been trying to access the program for three days and it's doing the same thing, I got a trojan horse right before it started doing it, but I've gotten rid of it and scanned many times, it's gone. I also uninstalled and reinstalled both Itunes and quicktime but it still doesen't work, I really need ideas here..lol.

Please help me someone. I bought this Ipod 2 weeks ago for my daughters 18th and all we get is this stupid error message all the time. I am really not impressed with this if any Apple technicans are reading this and want my money back!!!!

Well I was able to successfully revert back to iTunes8. Here's my steps:
    1. In Add/Remove Programs I deleted all Apple products (iTunes, QuickTime, Safari, Bonjour, etc.)
    2. I then check C:\Program Files\ and made sure all folders were deleted (QuickTime, etc.)
    3. I then ran a Registry Cleaner program to make sure all entries from Apple products were removed.
    4. I then rebooted my PC
    5. I then downloaded iTunes8.0.2 from here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/ipod_itunes/itunes802forwindows.html
    6. After it installed it said it could use my iTunes library file because it was created with a newer version. So I re-created my library by following these steps: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451
It took some time but iTunes is now back up and running. And I have all my playlists, etc. I haven't tried to sync anything yet. I'm just thrilled to have my iTunes back!
