Itunes error -42404

Well, unlike a previous thread about this error code, my itunes will open and play song and music videos. The catch is that it will only play songs and videos that i purchased in the last 4 months or so. All movies and 90% of the songs after that will not play. Movies wont play period while songs pop up the authorize box and when i go to authorize it pops up the "Unable to authorize. iTunes is missing a required component Error -42404"
Now i recently had to archive and reinstall OSX 10.4 because a failed update corrupted many of my programs. Now everything else works fully except iTunes. And i have current itunes and quicktime.
What do i do now??

Can you download anything from the iTunes Store, like the Free Single of The Week?

Okay, so I decided to uninstall and reinstall. Funny, iTunes can be found in a program folder, but it does not show up in the programs list. I tried to look for it using the command prompt ("wmic" --> "product get name") but iTunes is not there either. Doesn't even show up in the registry to try to uninstall.
I just want to "properly" uninstall and reinstall iTunes (plus the other usual suspects, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Bonjour, & Apple Application Support). If anyone out there has any suggestions, please help! (I'm running Windows Vista -- don't judge/laugh) :-)

Okay, feeling like an idiot, but will share so others don't have to. I rebooted my computer and that enabled iTunes to reappear in the programs list. Don't appear to be having the same problems as before (no error messages now). Problem solved!

I have updated to 11.0.3.42 and now have an error 42404 come up, I have uninstalled itunes twice and reinstalled but still get the same message. What am i doing wrong ang how can I fix it?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.

ITunes error (-42404) with itunes latest update

I recently went to sync my phone and when i opened itunes it said an update was available. To which i replied yes update and itunes the new itunes version and quick time (as i always do and have never had a problem) Then when it was done, i received this error....
" A required itunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall itunes (-42404) "
I cannot figure it out what is missing. Help please??? I cannot sync my phone or even open itunes.

Itunes Error 42404- corepf.pkg install fail

The Corepf.pkg in the itunes installer is failing to install, causing me to not be able to authorize my itunes account and preventing me from installing apps on my iphone and playing downloaded music. The pkg gets about 80% of the way through the install process. The error message states "The installer could not install some files in "/." I've tried reinstalling itunes and fixing disk permissions to no avail. Any thoughts?

I have exactly the same problem. I had a support store reinstall all my software after my computer crashed. I now have iTunes 8.2.1 and Quicktime 7.6.2 which as far as I can tell are the most current available. But when I try to play EITHER my own purchased downloaded music OR samples from the store, I get the message "We could not complete your iTunes store request. A required iTunes component is not installed (-42404). There was an error in the iTunes store. Please try again later." I've been trying again later for 2 days but no luck. I repaired all permissions, re-installed Quicktime, and tried every other hint I could find online. Help!

iTunes and library is stored on external hard drive connected to Dell PC
Windows XP. I made a shortcut on the desktop. Now all I get is this error message.

The last iTunes version that is compatible with Windows 2000 is 7.3
You need to download the windows 2000 version

Then uninstall all the iTunes related programs listed in this article which is actually for XP:

Then install the 2000 compatible iTunes.
If you get a message about a later version library when you try to start iTunes, you have to recreate the library from the xml file:

I am afraid if you want iTunes 8 you will have to ugrade your operating system or get a new PC.

TS1717 Itunes Error -42404 After Cleaning Computer

I recently cleaned by computer using CCleaner. Now, I am getting an error message saying I need to reinstall itunes. However, I can bring up my itunes, so I know it hasn't been erased. Also, my computer is not recognizing my ipod nano. Will reinstalling itunes solve these problems? Will any of my data be most?

Hmmm.
Let's try something relatively simple. Download and save a copy of the installer to your hard drive (don't run the install on line and don't start the install just yet):

Now right-click on the iTunesSetup.exe (or iTunes64Setup.exe) that you downloaded and select "Run as administrator".
Does that go through any better for you?

ITunes error 42404. Is there a fix?

I am having this problem and it is really annoying. Just this morning I tried to open iTunes and a message appeared saying "iTunes cannot be opened. Quicktime needs to be installed or repaired."
I have heard that many people have had this problem. I have uninstalled + repaired QT and I have installed QT 7 and also tried QT Alt 280 + iTunes add ons, all of these methods failed. I am afraid that if I uninstall iTunes I am going to lose all my music (and I have a huge library!).
Someone suggested exporting my library and converting the tracks to ID3 Tags then uninstalling, re-installing and importing the library and tags again. But how do you export when iTunes won't even open???
If I just back-up my tracks to a different location and uninstall will this be difficult or damaging for when I re-install and want to load up my library again?

Hey I'm only 14 and don't know to much about computers and need help. I downloaded a newer version of itunes but in the middle of the download it just stopped it wouldnt go any further so I stopped it. Now I try to get on itunes but it says "The itunes application could not be opened. A required itunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall quicktime. (-424040)" I tried redownloading it but nothing happened does anybody have any suggestions. I was also wondering if I were to uninstall itunes would I lose all my songs.

Updated Itunes to 10.5.3.3 and reveived error (-42404) now lost synch with ipod, previous ver OK. Reinstalling with repair after downloading the Itunes.exe file did not work.

Error (-42404) SOLUTION - for Vista
Uninstall everything Apple as per Apple Forum "http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1923 for Vista". Be the administrator to ensure you have acces to folders and files which you may need to check. This is the solution that worked for Vista, but I read the solution for Win 7 is almost identical.

ITunes 11 42404 error

Help!!! I am getting an error in iTunes after I upgraded to version 11. I am running Windows 7, IE 9 (now 10). The two error messages are:
Error1: A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes. (-42404)
Error2: We could not complete your iTunes Store request. A required iTunes component is not installed. Please repair or reinstall iTunes. (-42404)
So far I have tried to fix this by:
Signing out of iTunes Store and then sign back in. Instead of fixing the issue I am now locked out of iTunes Store and cannot sign back in. When I shut my computer down and restarted I now get a third error message.
Error3: We could not complete your iTunes Store request. An unknown error occurred (-50).
After seeing the advice on other postings I uninstalled iTunes. I uninstalled QuickTime. I deleted the SC files. I deleted my iTunes Library file and replaced it with a previous version. Reinstalled iTunes… same error message.
I then uninstalled iTunes again. Downloaded the previous version of iTunes. Changed the library file again because the previous version will not open a file that has been opened in a new version. Started iTunes and got the same error message.
I have now done combinations of the items above 10 times and still have not been able to fix the issue. What is worse is that I have 9 different devices that I sync with iTunes. Now when I attach a device to the computer and iTunes is not running, it does not launch automatically. When I launch it manually, I get the error message #1 noted above and then I get the following message:
iTunes cannot read the contents of iPad “name”. Go to the Summary tab in iPad preferences and click Restore to restore this iPad to factory settings.
… same thing with iPhones, iPods, etc.. I have 9 devices how they all need to be restored to factory settings. No, I have not done this on any of them yet, because I believe this issue is somehow related to the error messages I am getting.
I have checked everything I know how to do on the computer. Run every diagnostic I can and have found nothing. Please, someone help!

No it was never resolved. Apple support pointed at Windows as the issue. Windows support pointed at Apple. Go figure...! I tried every recommendation posted on every board I could find.
Due to some other needs, i finally bought a new computer and started from scratch. I am not happy with Apple support and Windows support. Some days I wish there was a 3rd option.

Updating ITunes and error 42404 with Vista

I was getting error 42404 and tried updating ITunes and it wouldn't update, tried a fix and was told it doesn't work with windows vista, I am unable to sync my IPad or my IPod and lost all my music and pictures I had on them, This all shows up on ITunes but will not transfer to my other devices and I cannot up grade because I have Windows Vista, is there a fix for this or am I SOL?
