ITunes, external drive, local drive, and iCloud and Match- help!

I have a 2011 Macbook Air as my primary machine. Given it's small sized hard drive, I don't want any music or media to be on the local machine (if possible. So, I've done a few things over the years:
(1) I have, inside iTunes, the default media location set to be a folder on my external thunderbolt drive.
(2) I have iCloud support for iTunes turned on
(3) I have iTunes Match turned on
My iTunes library is split 70/30 between music and movies/TV shows. My household has iPhones and iPads and I need all this content available to all the devices.
Ok, given the above factors, things seem to work pretty well. The iTunes folder on my external hard drive is about 145 gigs (about right I would think). But as it turns out, I have a iTunes folder on my local drive as well, in the "Music" folder per the Favorites section in Finder. This iTunes folder is roughly 36 gigs, so barely 1/5th the size of the folder on the external drive.
So, I backed up the local iTunes folder (onto the external drive), and then deleted it off my local machine. iTunes started, and it played music and movies, but a few songs (picked at random) could not be found, and iTunes would try to communicate with Apple for iTunes match, but this process would stall...and the app would eventually crash (within 10 minutes of starting...even when music was playing). It didn't completely close, but it became unresponsive. Moving the smaller iTunes folder back to its original place on the local drive seems to have fixed this issue.
Ultimately I'd like to clean off the local drive, use the external drive for whatever "local" storage I need for iTunes, and rely on iCloud and Match to provide the content to the mobile devices.
Can anyone assist?

The first thing you need to do is properly move the iTunes media off the internal HDD of the MBA to the external HDD. This KB article will help you with that: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1449
To use iTunes Match exclusively for streaming music the best practice is to create a new iTunes library and enable iTM on that library. This has the advantage of leaving the original library untouched. To create a new library quit iTunes, then launch it while holding down the Option key. Choose "new library" in the dialog. Do not have iTunes scan for media; then enable iTunes Match on the new library. Once the initial scan is done you will be able to stream the music.
You will need to have a backup scheme in place for when you add new music to the library as well.

I updated to lion and icloud and my calendar is quadpuling my entries....

Go to System Preferences and Display.  Then check the box at the bottom to show the Mirror Option in the menu bar.  Hook up your HDMI/Coverter cable to your MacBook and to your TV and set the right input on the TV.  If only a blank screen shows up and you can switch to the new display, change the option at the top to Scaled and try again.  This should work.
There's also a goofy bug that sometimes this doesn't work when a 2009 system gets upgraded to Mountain Lion.  As long as you're on 10.8.2 (latest version with all the patches), this software bug shouldn't be there.

  • ITunes Resets to local Drive Space when External Hard Drive not mounted

I have a large shared network drive where my son, my wintel box and I all have media placed on. All our computers are networked and authorized for each others music.
The problem is iTunes will default the 'iTunes Music folder location' to a local drive space if the external drive / path is not immediate available when iTunes is started (user:Music:iTunes Music vrs Eternal HD:Music:iTunes Music). This will sometimes will happen on boot, I have login mounting the external drive but that authorization / process once in a while times takes longer than starting up iTunes mostly due to an iPod connected to that computer. Since iTunes is not seeing that external drive (it isn't available yet). So the effect is iTunes defaults 'iTunes Music folder location' to the local music location - but - maintains the full library list (ie 10,000 question marks).
I have each computer maintaining it's own libraries on their respective drives which index to the music folders / files on the external (this is an itunes default to maintain the local library one each computer).
So ... How can I force iTunes to maintain the 'iTunes Music folder location' ?
(can the default location be changed ?... plist or some other file, or is this hard coded - or write a script to hold up iTunes to launch until after the external Hd is mounted)

I am sure that some will cringe at this
Note (my opinion) : I found when sharing with a Wintel box and Apple boxes it is better to use just smb. Mixing the smb AND afp arises to hang up problems and the afp is the side that seems to hang up the most. (that hurt me to type, I blame Finder - another story)
So - the script I use is fairly straight forward - Open Script Editor:
    tell application "Finder"
mount volume "smb://[ip address of hard drive]/[drive directory you wish to mount]" as user name "[username]" with password "[password of said user]"
    end tell
I recommend compiling the script (don't forget to save a copy you can also edit too - save as script). To compile a script : Save as Application, Run Only, No Start Up Screen. Since this has hard code Username / Passwords in the code - make sure you are happy with who will be running this script. So with the goal is to auto run when you start up, I tend to feel let it go ahead. If you wish to use afp (ie you are only sharing between macs - change the smb to afp in that code).
Next is to add this to your start up. Sys Pref > Accounts > Login Items
Just add the compiled application script to your user(s) login item.
Now for the - well, ugly part. Remove the iTunesHelper from the list.
Using Finder, Find iTunes - Show Package Contents, find iTunesHelper (it is iTunes:Contents:Resources)
Drag iTunesHelper into the Login Items (it should be listed now at the end of the list). Why this help I really can not tell you - I only have an idea of why - I have noticed that when my iPod may be plugged in when I reboot that iTunesHelper starts later in the sequence.
I did play around with changing the start up info on the unix side, for the brave only I would suggest. But - you can hard code a little better auto mounting a volume / hard disk / folder there on boot up. I did with to stay in the Mac GUI and AppleScript was just plain simple. The script can be modified to test if the volume is mounted etc time out try again etc etc etc... I kept it simple and straight forward.

  • Using itunes 9 on local drive with library on external drive

    Hi,
My current library is too large to fit on my local HDD, so after preforming a needed reformat,I decided to move my backed up media (mp3's, ipas...) to my external drive.
When I installed itunes, I changed "itunes media folder location" to the external drive (D:\itunes). I then consolidated the library.
The problem is this as follow:
When I drag an app ipa from my external hard drive (E:) to itunes it backs up the ipa to another external drive folder (D:\iTunes\Mobile Applications) which I specified (which is what I want it to do).
BUT, it also copies the ipa to the ORIGINAL "C:\Users\Name\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications" disk location!
I don't want itunes to copy the ipas from E: to both the original "C:\Users\Name\Music\iTunes\iTunes Media\Mobile Applications" location and "D:\iTunes\Mobile Applications". I only want a copy of ipa at D:\iTunes\Mobile Applications, not the original location.
Please help, itunes is really ***** me off.

I've been living the exact same nightmare. Spoke with applecare tech who was unable to help me, got transfered from hardware to software tech, eventually a supervisor acknowledged that he had no idea what was happening and his recommendation, "best I can suggest is that you try google it". Disappointing to say the least, I mean really if 'free' google supersedes the 'paytoplay' applecare, they have a business model issue. (Apple Expert Case 144795352).
I am currently resolving to leave the mobile applications on the HDD, while all the other iTunes media lives on my external drive... If I learn anything more, I'll post it here.

  • I recently had to buy a new computer because my other one could not be fixed. I had purchased a lot of music and it was in my iTunes. I did not have iCloud and I would like to have all of my purchased music on my new computer. How do I do that?

I would like to access my music from my account on another devise because my other one crashed. I do not have iCloud and I need this music on my new devise.

Anything you purchased from the iTunes Store can be downloaded again, as often as necessary, as long as it still exists in the iTunes Store.

I am using a PC with windows vista.  Have not had this problem till December when I got an ipad and had icloud installed, don't know if there is a connection.

I can't offer any help but it soulds like Apple goofed with the latest update. Many of us have the same problem. I may wait a week or so to see if Apple responds.

  • I had duplicated contacts on my old iPhone.  Went with Lion and iCloud, and the duplicates were gone.  New iPhone yesterday and now all my contacts are duplicated again.  How do I resolve?

When I first signed up with iCloud (and still had Mobile Me), my contacts all double or tripled, or more in my contact list.  When I went with Lion and fully integrated iCloud, that issue resolved itself.  I got a new iPhone yesterday, and when it was up and running, everything was fine.  This morning, I notice that my contacts are all duplicated again.  My personal contact is in my phone 10 times.  How do I resolve this?  My iTunes sync setting does not have me syning my contacts, it should just be in iCloud.  Thanks for any help.

  • How do I get rid of IMatch and ICloud and go back to manual syncing?

I often find myself with little or no service living in a rural town or working outside and this always having to download a song every time I want to hear it is a pain in the @$$. I just want to go back to the ways of the 3GS and have to Sync up songs and contacts. that way I can allways listen to them even if I have NO SERVICE.  But now with this cloud I can't do that.
I have tried deleting my ICloud account and turning I tunes match off on all my computers but I just lose al my contacts and songs and am not able to simply sync the selected songs.
Does anyone else have this problem what should I do?

Just go to settings>iCloud and turn all to off (you will also need to go to Settings>Music to turn off itunes match). This WILL remove all your iCloud synced data however you should be able to return all by just connecting to iTunes via USB or WiFi and re syncing, you may need to setup your sync settings in iTunes again.

  • How do I keep iMatch and Icloud and change my country

    Hello,
I have ICloud and iMatch subscriptions on my Apple account that is connected with the Dutch Apple store (and paid with a French creditcard). I live in France and can not access local French Apps. That starts to be annoying, so now I want to switch my  Holland to France but keep the subscriptions I already paid. If I loose Apps, I dont care, my music library in the cloud is more important;-)
    Thank you for answering
    Ab

Ensure that your iCloud account is set as the default account in the address book preferences. That way any new contacts you add to your address book will go straight to your iCloud account, I assume they are currently going to your on my Mac account, which appears to be causing your problem.

  • I pad updated to OS 5 and iCloud and have lost my bookmarks on my iPad

My I-pad has os 5 and icloud. I have lost my boolmarks on my ipad. I have tried to sync all on itunes several times- nothing and then enabled sync on icloud and tried sycing with icloud. I still have no bookmarks on my Ipad. Any ideas of wha to do next?

Your account is messed up in general. It's probably set to US version or some strange thing. Go check your apple ID (signin.apple.com)  If you see the american flag in the bottom right, you will need to fix that.

  • ICal and iCloud and Apple ID all going haywire!

    Greetings.
Starting yesterday (11/27/2011), I have had serious problems with iCloud and my Apple ID.
My calendars on my MacPro have gotten totally wiped out, and they only reside on my 3rd gen. iPod Touch.
Hard syncs with iTunes don't fix the problem.  And when I try to play with the iPod touch's iCloud settings, I get an error message:  "You can't sign in because your account was disabled for security reasons.  To enable your account, reset your password at iforgot.apple.com."
I have reset my password FIVE TIMES this morning and still the same problems!  Apple still says that my account has been disabled.  Resetting the password doesn't allow me to get back in, nor does it allow me to sync my calendars back up.
I NEED my calendars back on my Mac!  And I want my APPLE RESETS to "TAKE!"
Does anyone have any suggestions on how this might be fixed?
Thanks very much for your help.

  • I use icloud email but (2 email accounts univ and icloud) and i need to have all my outgoing emails come "from" my university account, not my icloud.  So how do i do that, note checking the default box for sending new messages only applies to new messages

I am using icloud email but i also have a university account.  All my email is fowarded to my icloud account and what i need to do is make sure all of my email that i ship is from my university account and not from my icloud account.  I know there is a box that allows the default for all new emails to originate from one account but how do i make sure that all my replies to email (i.e. they have been fowarded from university account to icloud) now go from my university account.  please help anyone.

Sorry for the delayed response, yes i want to use my university account when replying to all emails.  Note i just discovered something, when i forward my university email to my icloud account and than responded from either my imac of my macbook air (i.e. in icloud) it automatically goes to my university account in the "from" space (good news!!!).  That is just what i wanted, .  While that is the good news, the bad news is that my iphone and ipad still treat this email as being from icloud even though it is forwarded (redirected) from my university account.  That is when i respond to an email (or for that matter create a new email in my icloud account) it automatically lists the icloud account as the "from" account and i have to go in and manually modify it.  So i am 50% there to solving my problem (i.e. actually did nothing the systems just worked well) but i still need to figure out a way to make this happen on my ipad and iphone. Any help or suggestions, note the default button in the iphone and ipad for email work differently than the default in the composition menu of the imac or macair.

  • Itunes doesn't work well with icloud - will Match make it perfect?

I was quite excited by the security and convenience possibilities of icloud and music. I am very disappointed that I have to buy a yearly subscription service to get if to work properly.
I am about to go through the six steps to get match for itunes working. And *that* requires a computer that I don't have.
Background: When I heard about icloud I thought 'What a great concept! I can backup everything - I lose my phone, my music - no problem.'
Not quite. Aside from other problems with icloud (another post coming) itunes is NOT integrated with icloud. NEW USERS BE WARNED. Weird thing is that icloud works for everything else, even my 1800 videos and photographs.
I did a restore from icloud and about 30% of my songs did not show up, 25% of my playlists were greyed out (empty) and 15% had disappeared. Songs showed up in some lists (purchased) but not others (albums?) What the heck? I observed that going to my account at itunes store showed everything and there was a cloud symbol with a downwards arrow, i.e. download. I have slow wifi at home and no data service on my phone so this was a headache downloading all my songs one by one and reorganizing/creating playlists manually. Imagine if I had 50000 songs! This hassle was even though *all* songs were purchased from itunes. Nit a single ripped CD or torrented song.
Based on multiple previous disappointments and different stories depending on who I talk to at Apple I am skeptical of whether Itunes Match will truly make my iphone5 musical experience seamless and problem-free. I have 5000 songs from various sources (mostly ripped CDs from public libraries but also some internet sources) on a hard drive overseas and the concept of replacing them with superior bit rates and album art is appealing. But I am cautious. His do I know Apple doesn't change the rules 5 years from now - technically or legally? And if I miss a yearly payment will my songs self-destruct?

iCloud is not iTunes Match. The two services are seperate and distinct and one service does not require the other. iTunes Match does not use iCloud storage, nor is it a backup service.
iTunes Match only scans, matches and uploads tracks in an iTunes library. It does not not do this on an iOS device. You cannot even purchase iTunes Match except through iTunes on a computer.
You should take a look at this page to get a better idea of what iTunes Match is and does: http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/

  • How can i automate duplicating itunes library from local drive to nas

Basically, my only computer is a laptop and when i go away i take it with me to listen to music/watch films etc.
The problem is this. When i'm away my family can't access the music to play on various devices as it's stored on my laptop. I have a NAS drive and can map the media folder in itunes to it, but when i'm away obviously I can't access it. I'm quite sure there used to be a way in itunes to have your library mapped to a nas drive but also store the library locally. Am I just making this up?? Any Ideas? This is driving me mad. I know i can manually copy and paste files onto the nas but it's really not a viable answer.

Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive
See if this helps. I think this counts for you NAS Drive.

  • ITunes external/internal hard drive mixup

A somewhat unique situation has arose with my itunes library over time, and I'd like to set it straight. Right now some songs in my library are accessed from an external hard drive, while others are from my imac's internal hard drive. I'd like to have all my songs accessed from the internal hard drive so I do not have to worry about the external hard drive being on or connected. At the moment, my entire itunes library is on the internal hard drive and in the itunes music folder. Do I have to reimport everything, or is there a simpler solution? I'd also like to keep the play counts ect. Any suggestions?
Also, I plan on buying a macbook soon and transferring my itunes library through firewire. Will the same situation with the songs only playable while the external hard drive is connected still exist?

If you have iTunes 7, then you can just drag the entire iTunes folder to your desired location. Then hold down the Shift key while launching iTunes. You'll be given a dialog box where you can select the iTunes library you want to use. Navigate to and select the iTunes folder in it's new location.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Discussions page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums, in the User Tips Library and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.
