ITunes + external hard drive + iPod movies = headache. Help?

Hey folks,
I'm in need of some assistance. In theory, this should work just fine. But iTunes and I have a history and it's not cooperating again.
Present setup:
-Macbook (with a hard drive that is almost full)
-Music is saved on Macbook
-All is well
What I want the setup to be:
-Brand new WD 500 GB External hard drive
-An iTunes folder has been created on the external drive
-All my music was copied from my laptop to the external drive into the iTunes folder
-iTunes was updated with the new location
-Everything is fine UNTIL I unplug the hard drive, at that point iTunes resets itself to the Macbook folder. When I plug the external drive back in I have to reset the preferences to that location again and it updates my iTunes library - which is a pain to say the least.
It gets slightly more complicated at this point ... I'm in the midst of moving roughly 60 movies onto my iPod. I have a folder on my external drive named "iPod Movies." I was able to transfer 27 movies onto my iPod just fine last night. Now, when I transferring movies into iTunes I get this error, "Attempting to copy to the disk "My Book" failed. The disk could not be read from or written to."
Basically, I want my external drive to be my iTunes/iPod drive and it certainly is not working that way. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Set your folder structure on the ext HD to mimic what is on your Mac - iTunes>iTunes Music> etc - then make sure that the iTunes Library and .xml files for the library are on the ext HD. Then when opening iTunes hold down the 'Option' key and direct iTunes to the ext HD.

  • Itunes to external hard drive?? PLEASE Help.

    Hi Guys.
I like my iTunes library to be clean and neat. I have about 2,800 MP3's and it took me over a week to "edit" all of them and "clean them up" (properly spelled Artist, Genre, Album title, etc).
Now that everything is clean and neat, is there anyway I can copy my iTunes on to my external hard drive?
Should my computer crash, or I get a new one (this thing is OLD), I don't want to have to re-organize my entire iTunes library.
    Any help/info is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Vic

StubChain - Thats interesting. Will try that. Thank you.
StarDeb - Thanks again. Sorry to sound illiterate here, but how do i "drag" the iTunes folder to the EHD?
I know how to drag things, but I'd have to minimize the C Drive window, and then open the G drive (EHD) and not sure how to DRAG when i has to relase the mouse to open and close folders.
Assume Copy and paste would work??
what about what your article said yesterday about clicking on "keep itunes organized". still need to do that?
Guys, thanks for the help, and dealing with me. I'm iTunes illiterate.
I still don't know how to get a downloaded song from "My Documents" (where they DL to) over to iTunes. lol
    one struggle at a time.
*I've also tried to reward with the "helpful" tabs to you both, and an error happened. Will try again...promise...I'll just hit SOLVED.*

  • How do I replace my old external hard drive with a new larger external hard drive and move my music so itunes can find it?

How do I move music from an old external hard drive to a new external hard drive and have itunes find it?

If you have a time machine back up of your current drive you can do this
Shut down your computer, install the new drive. While the computer is off plug in the external hard drive that you have your time machine back up on. Hold Option key while the computer turnes on, let go of the option key once you get a grey screen. Shortly after you'll see  a list of bootable drives, select the one that has your time machine back up on it and boot into that drive.
From there go into disk utility, format your new drive too, osx extended journaled ( I think, double check that, its been awhile since ive had to do this), hit format
Exit disk utility and then you can use time machine to copy all your exisit data to the new hhd and then your pretty much done.
There is also a program called Carbon Cloner that will do esentially the same thing however I've never uesed it.

  • Trouble w/ iTunes & external hard drives: iTunes doesn't like to play nice

This is a story about my external hard drives and my macbook pro. Some time ago, I moved my itunes music folder with all of my songs and movies consolidated to it onto external hard drive #1, but kept my itunes organizational data on my macbook pro's internal hard drive. Life was good. I had more internal hard drive space on my macbook pro then ever because all my songs and movies were gone, and itunes worked flawlessly as long as hard drive #1 was connected.
To prepare for the future, I also dragged a copy of my itunes music folder with all my songs and movies in it onto hard drive #2 for safekeeping. Now, i had 2 copies of my itunes songs and movies, one on each hard drive. My insurance policy was in place. One day, hard drive #1 stopped mounting on my computer. It was time for old #1 leave me for the sweet peace of the afterlife. I bought a new hard drive, hard drive #3. I dragged my backup of hard drive #1's old files, including my itunes music folder with all of my songs and movies, from hard drive #2 to hard drive #3.
Now, my entire itunes data folder is sitting on hard drive #3 and yet itunes doesn't seem to want to play nice. All of my files have cute little exclamation marks next to them. When I double click on a song, iTunes pretends to be lost. It asks me to locate the mp3 and naturally I find it right in my iTunes music folder by searching for it, only this time it's sitting on hard drive #3 instead of hard drive #1. By going manually through my library this way, i could keep all playlists, play counts, ratings, and other lovely bits of data intact. However, this would take years, as my songs and movies number in the bajillions. If there isn't an easy solution I am missing, surely there must be a script or program that does this legwork for me, perhaps while I slumber.
No one on the internet seems to have this problem; everyone wants to use their ipods to restore their songs and movies. Since I own an iPod Touch, restoring the pitiful amount of files I have on it is a waste of my time, especially when all the files from my iPod are sitting right on little old hard drive #3 anyway. Citizens of the interwebs, here my plea: I require a solution to my problem of getting iTunes to recognize the folder of data it once interfaced with so seamlessly. I require a solution that does not destroy four years worth of playlists, and preferably not the "date added" data on my tracks either. All other data is fine for me to lose, but preferably not. I already know that finding the tracks manually keeps all data intact. My first inclination is that a solution to my problem may be to speed up that process. For those who seek an answer, as I do: godspeed, brave mac users. God.... godspeed.

    This should work:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1449?viewlocale=en_US
    BE AWARE THOUGH:
I followed these steps and had a strange issue come up. I don't think it was at all related following the steps above. But just double check your music BEFORE you throw out any of the music from you computers hard drive.
    Here's what happen.
Some of my music forgot what file type they were. I had some that decided to be plist others jpg others something else. It was totally random. And a HUGE pain to replace the music. But I worked through it.
    Hope that helps.

  • Itunes & external hard drives

Does anyone know if it would be possible to run Itunes on an external hard drive connected to a laptop via USB 2.0 ie store all music and Itunes on the hard drive?
I have no more memory left on my computer and I was hoping this would be an option.

Yes you can tasty chick...I ran into the same problem, and so I picked up a SimpleTech 120 GB external hard drive.
The trick is you need to assign the external hard drive a specific drive letter each time it is plugged into your laptop (or when you reboot). If you don't do this, then the external drive may get a different drive letter each time it is plugged in. This can be done by following the steps listed in this article at Microsoft's site (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307844)...assuming you have XP. If you don't have XP, search the site for the steps to follow for your operating system.
After that, just follow the steps from this Apple.com article about how to move your iTunes music folder (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305451).
Once you're done you should be able to fill up that iPod bad boy!
    Hope this helps,

  • Adding external hard drive space to eMac - help please??

Hi - I have just purchased a 320gb Seagate external HD as my 80G eMac HD is maxed out with pics, itunes, games etc etc...thanks to my kids!
I must be naive, but thought it would be as simple as "plug and play", but have not been able see the External Hard Drive (EHD) appear in Finder or Desktop, once tied in through firewire or USB ports.
When I follow the instructions available from online support, it's not enough to get a solution.
Can I please get some help....any ideas???

    Kieren,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Use the Firewire connection; a USB 2.0 model eMac can in theory use a USB connection, but the drivers for USB hard drives is problematic. The Firewire connection will be both more robust and faster in practice (USB 2.0 is nominally rated faster than Firewire 400, but in real-world thransfers, Firewire wins).
With the external HD connected, open Applications> Utilities> System Profiler and check under the Firewire heading. Does the drive show up at all? Do you have any other Firewire devices attached? If there are other Firewire devices attached, dismount and disconnect them. If no Firewire devices shows up, or more tellingly, if the Firewire bus itself doesn't show up in System Profiler, it's possible that a power glitch may have caused the Firewire bus to latch up. Reset the Firewire bus triple fuses by removing all peripherals other than the keyboard and mouse, then removing the power cord from the side of the eMac (to remove the trickle current drawn by modern electronics even when nominally off) and waiting 15+ minutes. Then reattach the power cord only restart the Mac. Check Apple’s System Profiler (in Applications/ Utilities) and confirm that the Firewire bus is recognized. Reattach peripherals one at a time, checking System Profiler after each to confirm the addition is recognized.
If the external HD still doesn't appear in the Finder, open Applications> Utilities> Disk Utility and see if the drive appears in the leftmost window pane of that program. If it does, you can use Disk Utility to reformat the drive as Mac OS Extended / HFS+
If none of these steps help, I'd wonder if the drive itself is bad and should be exchanged. Check the drive on a different computer.
Once you have the drive avaialbale on your Mac, you can use Disk Utility to partition the drive. I'd suggest making the first partition a little larger than your present internal hard drive; you can then use a third-party utility such as CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper! to clone the internal hard drive to the first partition of the external hard drive as a bootable backup. Then if there's a problem with the internal hard drive, you can use Startup Manager to boot from the external drive.

Try to keep between 1 to 5 GB free space on the internal boot hard drive (depending on whether you burn CD-R or DVD-R discs) to allow for necessary cache and swap files

  • Transferred library to external hard drive, iPod won't recognize

    2 problems:
    1. My Shuffle won't accept songs from iTunes now that's in on my external hard drive.
    2. When I hook up my regular iPod, it says something to the effect of "a new library has been detected, do I want to import?" Do I?

  • Locating External Hard Drive (to move library and files)

I found an article on the Apple help site that almost answered all my questions about this (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748). But when I followed the directions, I did not see my external hard drive as an available option in the list of drives/locations that came up. (And I was able to see my hard drive and access files on it via Explorer, etc.) Has anyone managed to move their Library and files successfully? ('Seems there are many people trying to do the same thing. We need better online help, Apple!)

your drive is formatted NTFS. OS X can only read but not write to NTFS drives. you can reformat it FAT which is writable from both OS X and windows. (this will wipe the drive of course). However, FAT is an inferior format with a number of limitations. another option is to install macfuse and NTFS-3g on your mac
    http://macntfs-3g.blogspot.com/
It will let you write to NTFS formatted drives.

  • Transfer to External Hard drive gone wrong. Help!!!

I improperly transferred my Itunes, with all my music, to my external hard drive. Not knowing that I had to consolidate my library before hand, I just moved the Itunes application and my Music folder (which contained all of my current music plus a past library from another computer) to the hard drive. When it worked just the same as the Itunes on my internal, I deleted both my original Itunes application and music folder, only to find that after they were deleted, the external Itunes no longer worked as it had before. Now I have all my music and the Itunes application on my external hard drive, and I know there must be an easier way to put them back together then replacing each file one by one. Can someone please help a serious SNAFU? Thanks, at3.

If they're still in two folders (iTunes app and Music) on your external, can you not just copy those two back to the internal drive and expect it to work properly again? It's my understanding that music you wish to be active in iTunes must be on your internal drive.

  • Itunes, external hard drive , and  Time machine

  • Itunes & external hard drive questions "original file could not be found"

I recently got my first apple, a Powerbook G4, and I am trying to figure out how to store and access my music files that are on my external hard drive. I have some music stored on my laptop and the majority of it on the hard drive. I can play the files on my computer's hard drive(itunes finds them), but the files on the external hard drive will not play, unless i seek it out manually. The message says "the song could not be played because the original file couldn't be found. Would u like to locate it" My question is how to get the files in my library to play when they are stored on my external hard drive. Any advice would be appreciated.

There's something missing in your explanation. If you're getting the "original file..." message, that would indicate that you may have had all your music files on your laptop drive at one point and them moved some of them to the external drive without using the proper procedure.
If you don't have a lot of playlists, star ratings, and that sort of information that you're trying to preserve, then Mike's suggestion is an easy way out. If you do have a lot of that kind of information, then you may need to see if you can restore your setup to its former condition, when it was all working, and then use proper procedures to move files to the external drive or whatever it was that you were trying to do.

  • External hard drive and new downloads help

I recently got an external hard drive for my music because my library would no longer fit in my internal hard drive. So I copied my itunes folder, including itunes media folder and my itunes library file, onto the hard drive, then set my destination for my library under the advanced settings in itunes as the place where the media folder is (I believe its F:\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Media) and thought I was good to go. All the music that I put on there on the initial copy work fine and are good to go. However, when I download new music from the Store, this new music does not appear in my library for some reason. The downloads are in my purchased playlist and they can be added to other playlists, but I cannot view them in my library. Furthermore, the files are on the external hard drive in the itunes media folder, and when I click on the files in there they play fine within itunes. I have also noticed that I cannot add files to my library that are on my external hard drive. I ripped a song off of youtube that was not in the Store, and saved it to a file within F:\My Music. When I try to add this file to my library, it is nowhere to be found. What in the world is going on here?

    Hi B,
Prepare the external HD by connecting to the Mac, open Disk Utility, select the manufacturer’s name of the external HD, select Partition and choose GUID Partition Table, format to Apple OS Extended (Journaled); quit Disk Utility.
    Open System Preferences.
    Click on Time Machine.
    Click on “Select Disk.”
Click just to the left of "On" to turn TM on if it's not already on.
Click on the disk or partition you want to use.
    Click on “Use for backup.”
Leave external HD connected, and TM will automatically do its thing.
TM's first backup will be slightly smaller than the size of the disk space used on the HD it is backing up. Subsequent backup sizes will be greatly reduced (maybe a few percent of the original, depending on how much new data has been saved to the HD TM is backing up).

  • I want to use elements 11 with an external hard drive and need some help.

I have a macbook pro and was fine using iphoto 09 as my image manager and editor. I soon filled my hard drive and purchased a 1tb external hard drive. I moved my iphoto library to the external drive while keeping iphoto on the macbook. I recently installed elements 11 and was using it as an external editor with iphoto. I began to play around with the organizer and found that I liked it. My question is how do I move my iphoto library to elements 11 organizer while still keeping the photos on the external hard drive.

If you import from iPhoto into Elements Organizer, the files will be copied to your hard disk and all the organization done in iPhoto09 will be carried forward to Organizer catalog. This can be done if you have enough space on your hard disk. However if you want to use Organizer solely + not create duplicate copies of your images, you can import photos directly from the Hard Disk. Ensure to write all metadata to files within iPhoto so that when the same photos are imported into Organizer, the tagging done is brought along.
    Thanks

  • Unable to open projects from an external hard drive... Help??

Ok, so here's the problem.  I recently moved all of my projects onto my external hard drive (G-Drive) and now I am unable to open them in FCP X.  All of the projects were originally created using FCP, opened them using FCP X this morning, saved again to my hard drive but now they won't show up.  Am I overlooking something?? I haven't changed any settings or touched the projects since they were last opened in FCP X and moved onto my hard drive.  Has anyone accessed projects off an external yet in FCP X??
    Thanks for your help,

Sorry, Katie, but as many of us found out very painfully today, Final Cut Pro X cannot open any edit files from any earlier version.  The fact they are on an external drive doesn't matter.
