Itunes external speakers and airport express

cant connect to airport express in itunes. airport express is working as I am wifi on the net. Base station is showing in itunes but is greyed out and not allowing me to choose it as an option for speakers

You're probably right... I found Airfoil on the net after having posted the question, and read about the delay in the FAQ. I didn't ever try it with Skype as I imagined it would be as you said. Two secs is more than I feared though. Conversation between the earth and a spaceship is just about what it would be.
Sad though. It is soooo nice to have Skype in the hifi set. Like a conversation with someone in the same room. Now I will have to connect that cable again. Thought I had removed one of those annoying things on the floor for ever...

  • Itunes, remote speakers and airport express

I have recently upgraded to os 10.4.11 from 3.9. Suddenly iTunes cannot connect to my remote speakers through my airport express. The option appears but is "greyed out" and cannot be selected. As my husband is able to connect with his computer, I'm guessing the airport express and the speakers are not the problem. I am likewise having a problem printing through my airport express. Unlike 10.3.9, Tiger does not offer my canon ip 5000 as a specific choice and offers a generic driver instead...what to do?? Many thanks in advance for any help.

I am having the EXACT same problem since upgrading from 10.3.9 to 10.4.11 - nothing works. I have checked all cords and connections, reconfigured the airport, rebooted my computer, gone in and out of iTunes, selected and deselected and reselected the find remote speakers button in preferences. The crappy thing is that the whole reason I got the remote speakers was so I could listen to music in the kitchen while cooking. Now I have to cook for 45 people and no music in the kitchen (complete other end of apartment) - gee. great.

  • Outdoor Speakers and Airport Express

    Hi everyone,
I'm looking at rock speakers to put in my backyard and connect to airport express, these ones especially:
    http://www.outdoorspeakerdepot.com/hf5.html
Can anyone give me a rundown on how to use these speakers with airport express and what kind of things I'll need besides them to get them to work with Airport Express?
Any instructions would be greatly appreciated, I've looked all around and can't find any help so far.

This may be possible. The AirPort Express is an AirPlay capable device. If your current wireless speakers are also AirPlay capable, then you should be able to stream to both these wireless speakers and to speakers connected to the Express via an analog/digital audio cable simultaneously or separately.

  • Music interrupts when using iTunes & remote speakers via Airport Express

Like many other I have had this problem.
    Short version:
It disappeared when I turned of a wireless network expander and was only running the network with the wireless router and Airport Express on.
    Long version:
I had the folowing setup. One Linksys wireless router, one Linksys access point configured as wireless repeater (to extend the range of my network). About in the middle my Airport Express is located. When I disconnected the Wireless Repeater the problem disappeared. My conclusion is that Airport Express was switching between the two "base stations" and that was when the interruption was created. Anyone else who has about the same setup and do experience the problem that can verify by disconnecting everything except the wireless router?

The trouble you are reporting sounds like WiFi connection probs. Signal quality and strength is just not sufficient to ensure a constant and high enough data transfer. I would recommend to do some test with AP and computer being rather close to each other. Its may a good idea to switch from WEb to WPA encryption.

  • Stream content from iTunes to AppleTV and Airport Express

I have an Apple TV in family room which is wirelessly connected to my home network. I also have a PC connected via Ethernet to my network. All my music is stored on an external drive connected to my PC (I don’t store any media on the ATV, as my music is well over 400GB). This setup works great, and allows me to stream content from the external drive to my ATV which is connected to a stereo.
Next, I purchased an Airport Express, connected it to a second stereo in my basement. After spending 3 hours trying to get it connected to my network, (I had to disable all wireless encryption, and use MAC filtering to keep network secure), I am now able to stream media from iTunes on the PC, to the stereo connected to the Airport Express.
What I would like to do now, is be able to select a song from the Apple TV (using ATV remote, or iPhone Remote), and have it play in both places. Since the media itself is coming from iTunes running on the PC with the external drive, and it gets streamed from there to Apple TV, how can I also stream the same content to the Airport Express?
The folks at the Apple store say this is a feature, but no one seems to know how to make it work. I have also read hundreds of posts online, and some say you can do this, others say you cannot. All of those who say it is not possible, state you cannot stream from ATV to AE, but in my case, the media is not on the ATV, it is on the PC, and I just want to use ATV to select the song. From there, it would be iTunes that would send the content to both the ATV and the AE.
Can someone help myself and many others put this question to rest - can it be done, or not?

Thanks for the reply. Just as you indicated, I figured out how to use iPhone remote to tell iTunes on PC to output to Express, Apple TV and PC, and that works great - I can even turn on/off any of the speakers from the iPhone - this is so COOL!
While you answered the question, I am curious about the architecture of all this...If the media is actually on the PC and is controlled by iTunes, isn't the Apple TV doing the same thing as the iPhone Remote - just telling iTunes what to play, and iTunes sends the content to whatever speakers are defined? Keeping that thought, if you can control iTunes via iPhone Remote, and the content will play on any speakers you select, then it would make sense that you could do the same thing with the Apple TV menu - tell iTunes what to play, and let iTunes send to whatever speakers you have selected.

  • Airtunes, Wireless Speakers and Airport Express:  A Reality?

    Hi all,
I have an Airport Extreme Base Station that I use to wirelessly connect my iMac and pc to the internet and a common printer. Last week, I purchased the Airport Express (AE) to allow for me to play the music from my iTunes library (on the iMac) on some speakers in my backyard during a party. I wound up purchasing some decent computer speakers and connected them to the AE vis-a-vis a 3.5mm stero jack.
Ideally, I want to purchase some really good, wireless outdoor speakers, but I do not know how I would be able to utilize the AE in conjunction with a wireless speaker system. Again, my understanding is that a 3.5 mm stereo jack connecting the speakers to the AE is required to enable Airtunes to play via the AE.
Can anyone suggest a way that I can get Airtunes to play through the AE over wireless speakers without the stereo jack? Are there any wireless speakers that include a subwoofer that would connect to the AE via the 3.5mm stereo jack and then transmit to the speakers via bluetooth?
Thanks in advance for any help!

^^ Thanks, Duane. But how about a situation where the wireless speakers are equipped with a receiver: theoretically, could I attach the receiver to the AE via the 3.5 mm stereo jack and then place the wireless speakers anywhere I desired (within the range of the receiver, of course)?

  • External drive and Airport Express

I want a backup drive at a not so obvious location. I bought a Trekstor DataStation maxi z.ul, which is supposed to be a network drive and an Airport Express. Installing the Express in the WLAN is simple, as usual. I have then installed the NDAS-Software that comes with the drive. No matter if I use the Ethernet or the USB between drive and Airport, The Drive cannot be found from ana computer. Is the Airport Express suited for this purpose or what am I doing wrong?

The AirPort Express should be able to do what you want, but it depends on how you have your base station configured.
In order to work, the drive needs to be connected to the LAN side of the network so that it can be seen by clients on the WLAN.
If your Express is acting as a gateway, running NAT to share a single WAN address amongst multiple wireless clients, then the single ethernet port on the Express is likely set as the external/WAN interface, separate from the LAN and therefore inacessible to the wireless network.
You need to provide more information on how your network is setup in order to tell if that's the problem.
How are you connecting to the internet?
Is your AirPort Express sharing a single IP address to multiple wireless clients?

  • ITunes, Time Capsule and AirPort Express?

    Hi,
I'm planning on getting a Time Capsule to store all my CDs and my digital music one location.
Does anyone have any experience with these things?
I have a MacBook Pro with "only" a 100GB drive.
I want to "rip" all my CDs to iTunes, store them in a secondary library on the Time Capsule, then stream the music back to iTunes on my MacBook Pro and through the AirPort Express at my audio system. I'd prefer to store the music as aiff. Is the Time Capsule/AirPort-technology fast enough for this?
Another question; if a song is stored in iTunes as aiff and then sent to a iPod (3rd gen. nano), is it automatically converted to mp4 or is still aiff on the iPod?
    Best regards,
    Martin Markvoll

    Hi Martin,
what a co-incidence - i just bought an IMAC and also have the thought of archiving all my CD's (about 1000) on some kind of harddisc-server, and then be able to access this archive via my Imac (wirelessly), and stream the music to my Hifi system and feed it into my Digital/Analog Converter. Do you think the time capsule wld be ideal for the function of storing/archiving and streaming to the hifi system..? I guess I also need a seperate "Airport Express", as it has an optical- digital output into my Digital/Analog converter...
Thanks for your thoughts and kind regards from Singapore !

  • Itunes, wireless networking and Airport Express

    Hi,
I currently have an AEBS and I am considering getting an Express to extend my network and stream iTunes to my stereo. My network is wireless for my Laptop and hardwired into my two desktops.
I know that I can set up Airtunes, but sitting near my stereo is a small hub (thats connected to my AEBS) that feeds media to my Xbox media centre. Can I connect my Airport Express to this hub via ethernet to receive iTunes then using the speaker cables feed music to my stereo or will it only work wirelessly in Airtunes mode?
Also, can you extend the wirless network with your Express by having it wired into this hub then re transmitting the wireless signal or will wireless netwrk extending only work completely wirelessly?
    Thanks

Using Airport Express for External speakers and Apple TV.  When I'm on MAC computer adn using internet sound from Internet does not go through external speakers.  Instead it comes out of Mac computer speaker.  Why?

As far as I know, the Airport Express only transmits sounds via Itunes. So every other sound (internet, but also incoming mail) will be coming out of your mac instead of your external speakers.

  • Apple TV doesn't show up in iTunes when AirPort Express is running at the same time - Can't play music on both Apple TV and AirPort Express speakers together

    Hi there!
I am trying to play music from my Mac on multiple speakers, Apple TV and AirPort Express. But as soon as the AirPort Express station is plugged in, the Apple TV does not show up in iTunes anymore. When trying the same using iPhones Remote app it works perfectly.
Does anyone of you have an idea why iTunes does not show me both Apple TV AND AirPort Express? (it has nothing to to with the IP adress as the adresses are different).
    Thanks for any help!

As my english isn't too good I made a screenshot to show you what I mean.
As you can see in the image below iTunes only shows me the computer speakers and the AirPort Express. But at the bottom you can see that iTunes actually recognized 3 different speaker (Mac, AirPort, Apple TV 2). Why does the Apple TV not show up in the multiple speakers window? Any ideas?

  • ITunes 8: I can no longer connect to remote speakers via Airport Express

Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility
I get the following error code (-3256) Apple KB research says:
AirTunes: Error -3256 when streaming to multiple AirPort Express units
You may see this message: An error occurred while connecting to the remote speaker speaker_name . An unknown error occurred (- 3256 ).This occurs with iTunes 6.0.2 or later.SolutionIf you use a third-party firewall or router, make sure that it is configured to permit UDP traffic.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303157
I followed the KB link, tried KB solution, then I sent this off to Apple.
"Mac G5 2.0 Ghz, OS 10.5.4 just installed iTunes 8, one (1) Airport Express connected to remote speakers. Firewall under Sharing in System preferences does not offer firewall access. Firewall is under Security but "Advanced" is grayed out.
Cannot connect to my remote speakers, worked before iTunes 8"
I have restarted the computer, iTunes, QT 7.5.5, run disk utility, unplugged the airport express.
My G4 PowerBook running an earlier version of iTunes connects without problem.

I just got off a 30+ minute phone call with an Apple Support rep about this. I'm getting error -3256. The rep was patient and tried hard to solve the problem, but was basically clueless. I have a case number and was encouraged to call back tomorrow to speak with a product support specialist.
This stinks. AirTunes is my primary way of playing music from my computer. With no obvious way of rolling back to iTunes 7, this is a big deal.

  • ITunes can't find Airport Express remote speakers after PC standby

I use Airport Express 802.11n to drive my remote speakers over WiFi from iTunes. It works well, except for after my PC Laptop has been in standby (such as folding the screen). When it wakes up and regains network connectivity, iTunes can no longer find the Airport Express remote speakers. I can ping the Airport and it shows up in Airport Utility, so I have WiFi connection. It does not help to restart iTunes, I need to reboot Windows to allow iTunes to see the remote speakers again.
Does anyone have a tip of how I can get iTunes to "refresh" the Airport Express connection (zeroconf/Bonjour issue?) after standby wakeup?

    Holy moly. Now it works.
I restarted the Airport Express from the Airport Utility application, repaired persmissions and rebooted the computer as well.
Not much of a "fix" but sometimes you gotta do the most obvious I guess. (And yes I feel stupid)
    Cheers

  • ITunes not seeing remote speakers on Airport Express

... but the Airport seems to be set up correctly. "Enable AirTunes" is checked in Airport Utility, and "Look for remote speakers..." is checked in iTunes. The wireless network (WPA2 encryption) is set up through a different Airport Express (we'll call it #1); the new one (#2) is only for streaming to the stereo (cable connection, modem, and Airport Express #1 are at the other end of the house, in the basement). I have a green light on #2, and it shows up fine in Airport Utility.
in the long term, I'm planning to use Airfoil to stream Grooveshark to the stereo - AX #2 shows up in Airfoil's speaker options, but Airfoil can't connect to it, just times out. I figured I'd resolve the issue in iTunes or with the network, then deal with Airfoil if it's still a problem (which I don't think it will be). I've searched the forum, but not found anything quite like this - most people seem to be having problems with iTunes losing a connection, or they at least have the drop-down menu to select remote speakers - I don't even have that. I've seen references to opening a port on the router; I have no idea what that means or how to do it. Any help is appreciated!
    thanks,
    Andrew

  • Can you share iTunes music w/Apple TV and Airport Express?

Can you share iTunes music between Apple TV and Airport Express?
I have been very happily using 2 Airport expresses to share my itunes library from my iMac to 2 other rooms. I just bought an Apple TV for the bedroom (and I ASSUMED to replace the Airport Express), and can not figure out any possible way to have the same music in 3 rooms any more.
    Anybody have any ideas?

I think you may have misunderstood the OP, I believe they wish to be able to walk from room to room and listen to the same music over the tv and the express. itunes will send music to the tv and the express at the same time but in two different streams, so even if you chose the same music over each device it would be quite difficult to sync.
