ITunes file in Preftech Folder Question

Hi, there. I hope someone can answer this.
Saturday morning, my virus software blocked a Trojan. I've run numerous scans with different recommended software and am assured by them all my system is clean.
But, of course, in any situation where my system may've been compromised, I get a little paranoid about weird changes occurring shortly thereafter.
Saturday night (after being certain everything was clean), I purchased something from iTunes and was asked to confirm my billing info. I searched for this issue on the forums and found that it seemed to be a common occurrence.
So, to make a long story even longer, my question:
Later that night, a file was added to my Preftech folder that says it opens with iTunes.
I've scanned that particular file as well and it comes back clean, but I'd really like some assurance that it is a legit file.
The name is:
MSIEXEC.EXE-330626DC.pf
I've Googled and Googled and can't get anything definite.
Does anyone know if this is a normal thing for iTunes to put in a Preftech folder? Am I just being paranoid or is it suspicious?
Thanks for any advice you can give me.
KJ

Sorry for wasting anyone's time.
I've discovered that it's not actually an iTunes file being added...but rather, everything in my prefetch folder has been changed to open with iTunes as its default application.

  • Where do Itune files live and other questions

I know Itunes is a media player, but does it also hold the files.  Mostly for grins, I tried to copy a talk in Itunes to another folder and it would not let me.  Is it true it does not allow for this?
I gather that for music it is one-way synching, from (in my case) the MBP to the (in my case) Iphone.  If I want to delete something from the Iphone and have to uncheck it on the computer and resynch?

"I gather that for music it is one-way synching, from (in my case) the MBP to the (in my case) Iphone."
    Correct.
"If I want to delete something from the Iphone and have to uncheck it on the computer and resynch?"
    Correct.
The iphone is not a storage device.  It simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.

Am trying to transfer an iTunes library to an external disk for back up.  Have followed normal instructions by locating iTunes folder in Music file and dragging across the iTunes folder to the external disk icon.  Nothing happens.  No notifications.  Just a very pregnant pause.  Any advice gratefully appreciated.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
The external drive must be formatted in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)", exFAT or FAT32, because OS X can't write in NTFS partitions by default.
As you just want the library on the external drive to make a backup of your library, you can format it in "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" by using Disk Utility > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU1.html (Note that you won't be able to use the external drive with PCs unless you install a special application in them).
Finally, drag your iTunes folder to your external drive

  • Keeping iTunes files in one folder

Hi. I'm trying to keep all of my media in one place, on a third internal hard drive.
I plan to use iTunes for my music, because I like it and need to sync to my iPod.
I don't watch films in iTunes, so the films are of no consequnce to me in this example.
I've been trying to use the settings that cause iTunes to copy all media to a folder when added to iTunes, but keep running into issues.
If I tell iTunes to use "F:\", folders are created in the root of "F:\" with the artist names on them.
If I tell iTunes to use "F:\Music\" another folder "F:\Music\Music\" is created - it's driving me insane!
Any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    James.

Try using a cloning tool like Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com) to select your external drive as a file source, and then choose a folder on your system as the destination. Then clone the drive's contents to the folder, and Carbon Copy Cloner will use the robust file syncing tool "rsync" to copy files. This routine may be more robust than Apple's as it does not perform all the checks and rely on an "all or none" approach, as the Finder copying method does.
An alternative is to use the Terminal and run rsync by itself, but this will be easier to do with Carbon Copy Cloner.

  • Transferring music to new mac air using external drive: next steps after copying iTunes file to music folder?

I've followed instructions to consolidate, copy to external drive, then copy iTunes folder to Music folder on new mac air.  so...
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?

Exactly what steps did you follow?
    1. what do I do with original iTunes folder?
    It's on your old computer.
What do you want to do with it?
    2. how do I get iTunes to read/ingest playlist and songs?
If you copied the entire /Music/iTunes/ folder from old computer to /Music/ on new computer then you simply need to open iTunes.
Since it is the exact same library, everything will be there as it was on old computer.

  • Does itunes automatically copy files to its folder?

If I download music from a website to my desktop, and then doubleclick the icon on my desktop, it starts playing in itunes. But it also looks like it saves a copy of the file in the itunes music folder. Can i just safely delete the files off my desktop now (and still play the music in future) because they have been automically copied into the itunes folder?
Also, is there a way to turn this feature off, so that I can still play the music by clicking on the icons on the desktop, but itunes doesn't automatically copy the files into its folder?

    Hi Jeff,
iTunes does put a copy of the song in your Music Folder, and yes, you can delete the file off your Desktop as soon as it opens in iTunes, I'll take a minute now to see if you can turn off the automatic copying feature.
    Edit:
You can turn off the auto-copy setting by going to iTunes-Preferences-Advanced-uncheck the box next to "Copy files to iTunes Music Folder when adding to library"

  • Itunes Library .itl file in one folder, music in another Itunes makes no sense!

A while ago I attempted to move one of my libraries to another folder to try to force Itunes to orginise my files in a way that makes sense.   Older versions of itunes apparently used a Music folder and the new one doesn't (or is it the other way around).  So I end up with some files in The Beatles/ItunesMedia/Music/Beatles and other files in Itunes The Beatles/Itunes Mediia/Beatles.
I wanted to force Itunes to re-orginize all of the files under which ever system is newer.  I read up and was happy to find tha Itunes had a command to re-orginize and/or consolidate the files.   BUT carrying out this process turned out to be baffling.   It is very unclear what exactly these commands do and how to use them.
So now I have one folder called The Beatles and another folder called The Beatles ALL.   My .itl file is in The Beatles and all my music is in folders in The Beatles All/
I tried to fix this and saw some really strange behavior.   When I open my Library and play a song, that song is moved to ANOTHER folder next to the Music folder.   So now I have my itl file in one folder, most of my music in another folder, and two songs in this new folder that itunes just created.   I'm guessing that everytime I play a song itunes will move it to the new folder (Why?)
If you don't use separate Libraries please don't ask me why I am using separate Libraries.    I have a LOT of Beatles music that is more of a historical collection and I need to keep it separate from the Library of albums that I actually listen too.
To me itunes behavior is crazy.   Can some one explain it in a way that will make me slap my forehead and say "of course...it makes so much sense!"?   or is it just as bizzare and random as I think?
Another approach that I considered was just creating a new library and importing all of those songs.  But I believe I would lose all of my playlists and I have my beatles collection extensively orginized by playlists.
    Help appreciated.
    Mike

This is an overview of how your library ought to be organized and how you might get it there. I can give specific instructions if you provide more details such as the full locations of the folders you mentioned earlier.
    Make a split library portable
Here are the typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
In the layout above, with the media folder (everything in the red box) inside the library folder, the library is considered to be portable. A portable library can be moved from one path to another without breaking the links between the library and the media, and being self-contained is much easier to backup (You do backup, don't you?).
You can rearrange things to make a split library portable by taking a number of small steps which don't break the library.
Before you start any media files that are outside of the media folder will need to be consolidated (File > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate Files). If the library is in the old style layout then it should be upgraded to iTunes Media Organization (File > Library > Organize Library > Rearrange files in the folder <Media Folder>) to ensure that iPod Games, Mobile Applications etc. are brought inside the media folder.
    The basic non-fatal manipulations are:
You can connect to an alternate set of library files by holding down Shift (Win) or Option (Mac) when starting iTunes.
You can move the library files to a new location as long as the media stays put.
You can move the library files and the media together if the media folder is a direct subfolder of the library folder.
If you have already moved/copied the media content from a subfolder of the library folder to a different location then you only need to copy the library files for it to appear as if you have moved the entire library in the way allowed above. I.e. just copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder.
You can rename the media folder to iTunes Media (if it isn't already) if the media folder is inside the library folder.
iTunes (prior to iTunes 11) uses the name of the folder holding the library files as the window title. Having made a library "portable" you may need to take a final step of renaming the library folder to iTunes or, if the library files have ended up at the root of a drive, moving all of the library files and content folders into a new folder called iTunes.
After each change you need to open, test and close the relevant library before attempting another change. If a change broke the library, undo it or revert to using the previous set of library files.
In essence all you need to do to make your library portable is copy the library files into the parent folder of the media folder on the external/secondary drive and use the hold-down-shift/option-when-starting-iTunes method to connect to it. Other manipulations may be required to normalize the library so that the library and media folders have standard names.

  • HT1347 When I add a folder to the library, does that mean that 'later' when I drop a new file into that folder (already added) it will automatically end up in iTunes? (or do I have to add file/folder to library every time I have a new file??) I'm using XP

iTunes does not actively scan the media folders.  If you manually add content to a folder, then you must add that content to iTunes manually via the File > Add File/Folder feature.
The only folder that gets scanned is the "Automatically add to iTunes" folder.

  • ITunes Library File in Documents Folder? Mac problem not Windows

    I am confused!
I have several very small iTunes Library folders in my Music/iTunes file which date back to iTunes 4. Some of the files are less than 10kb. I also have a folder titled Previous Libraries in my Music/iTunes file which has two Libraries which are 768kb and 2.6mb in size. My main library which is 10.3mb was in my Documents folder which seems strange. I have now moved it to my Music/iTunes folder which is where I think it should be.
I am trying to tidy up what appears to be a bit of a mess. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    David.

  • Blinking folder & Question Mark - Drive Good - Files Are Still there

    Okay,
So I've been a long way with this iMac. It originally came to me with bad power supply. I replaced. Then it came back with bad capacitors. I replaced. Then it came back not booting. Here's where I'm stuck.
I dont see the drive if I use command - s. If I boot OS X install cd, I can select OS X 10.4.11 on [OS Volume Name] in Startup Disk, I can see all the files on the disk, I've ran all repair options including file permissions and Disk Warrior, but the OS never loads.
Tried Safe Mode, Single User, Verbose Mode, PRAM Reset, NVRAM Reset, reset-all in command-option-o-f mode, I've blessed the /Volumes/[OS Volume Name]/System/Library/CoreServices directory several different ways, still the OS never loads... blinking folder & question mark.
I dont have correct install cd for this system and can't reinstall. Any suggestions or repairing bootloader, kernel, or something advanced...???
    Anyone?

Hi Jkat, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Sounds like short of a proper install disk, you've tried everything but this...
