ITunes FileID race

I am getting an error message in iTunes that says the following:
"The iTunes Library File cannot be saved. An unknown error occurred (-48)."
I did some searching and all I found about this error was stuff that seemed to related to virus scanner conflicts when running iTunes on Windows but since that is not my environment the information I found did not help.
After searching through the various system logs that I could find in the System Profiler application I found the following entry in system.log. It seems like each time iTunes gives me the above error I see one of these as well:
"/System/Library/CoreServices/coreservicesd[58]: FileID race detected: 310 assigned for Temp File 3.tmp by external allocator is already used by iTunes Library"
Stopping and restarting iTunes does not seem to help, and I get the exact same error message with the same numbers everytime.
The only interesting thing about my setup is that the entire iTunes directory is located on an NFS mount from a Linux file server, if that matters. It has been running this way for quite some time without problems, although I did just recently update the file server from Ubuntu 8.04 LTS to Ubuntu 9.10.
I am trying to add a file to the library but this error is preventing that. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

I just encountered this problem at my university and may have a fix.
We had home directories mounting over NFS with the "nolock" mount option. Removing the nolock option removed the FileID race errors, and may have entirely fixed the problems our users were having (though I'll have to wait until the users actually try using things again, hopefully tomorrow).
I hope that helps. If that only gets rid of the errors but still leaves you with problems, then I will be as interested as you are in figuring out a solution.

  • After adding folders to iTunes library, now have duplicates of each song

I store all my music on a separate drive, M:\
I have a specific file structure setup that has worked for me for years, M:\Artist\Album
I recently received an iPod for my birthday, and started using iTunes. After adding my music drive (M:\) for inclusion into the library (without "keep..." and "copy..." selected, as to keep my current file structure intact), when selecting "File->Display Duplicates" just about every song in the library has a duplicate, one in the original folder "M:\Artist\Album", and another in "M:\Playlists\..\Artist\Album". I understand that basically somehow iTunes glitched and started in the "M:\Playlist" directory when adding to the library at some point, however I am at a loss as to how. In my actual folders I only have 1 copy of each song, so basically iTunes is making a symbolic link to each song and adding it into the library as a separate song.
I have over 9000 (must...resist...meme...) songs in my library, and removing and restoring takes quite a while. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to do this at least once now, but any ideas as to why or advice on how to avoid this particular problem in the future?
I am pretty set in my ways of my current file structure, since I don't use iTunes as my primary media software, so I would prefer to not have to resort to succumbing to just letting iTunes handle everything the way it wants (I pretty much hate that).
Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
EDIT: Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?
    Message was edited by: kaziekama

If you have "Keep..." and "Copy..." unchecked, iTunes will simply reference the existing file, and will not change your file structure, as you correctly note.
I'm fairly sure that some other program is operating on your files. The "Playlists" folder that you mention has nothing to do with iTunes. On my PC, only Windows Media and Roxio use it.
To your question +"Is there a way to have iTunes rename/move files when adding to its library to specific folders via custom rules based on ID3 information (i.e. WMP rip settings)?"+ the answer is no. When iTunes rips a CD, it names the files as track number and title, with no option to do differently. And as far as placing the ripped files, they go in Artist/Album, with no option to do differently. As full-featured ripping programs go, iTunes is not even in the race.

  • Family Sharing iTunes iPhone6 = Worst Mistake Ever!

If you're thinking of switching from Android to iPhone - don't. May be the worst purchase I've made in my life.
My wife had an iPhone. I had Galaxy S5. We used 1 Apple ID. Everyone was OK. Then, we buy 2 new iPhone 6's and attempt to split between 2 separate Apple ID's using Family Sharing. Since I bought a MacBook last year, I thought "as long as everything is Apple, maybe things will be easier and simple." In concept, it all sounds so great. Reality is it delivers on none of the promises. Its been this way since the first iPod & iTunes was released. I probably should have known, but more than a decade has passed and they sell it so well at the retail store and Apple online. Frankly, I think Apple had defrauded all of us.
    1) Unless you want your iPhones to be absolute mirrors of each other, you cannot share a computer with iTunes. Not even on a MacBook. I know no one who wants this. If you read the terribly written and false "help" articles on Apple Support, they say you can/should use different accounts in OS X and iTunes. Through some elaborate file sharing schema you can duplicate all your media files on your hard drive (for each user) and perform manual searches and updates when making music purchases. There is absolutely nothing easy or user friendly about it. Even the simple act of restoring the ability to unselect the syncing of apps seems like would solve most people's complaints. Until then, its an utter mess at best.
    2) Family "Sharing". What a joke. This is not ready for beta much less GA. Searching the forums, EVERYONE is having massive issues with this. Lots of "work arounds" - which basically involve disabling & not using Family "Sharing" - but no resolution from Apple. Not even a post acknowledging the issue or advising on it. Not in the past 4+ months its clear customers have been mislead about how it should work but have found in practice it does not. Seems it may work for people who've never made an Apple purchase before starting Family Sharing, but I have my doubts.
When is Apple going to fix this crap? I'm honestly considering returning my phones and getting a pair of GS5's.
P.S. Since I'm ranting... ringtones. This was another Apple disaster I was reminded of in this process. If you have a ringtone you want to download or someone has sent you, the Android way (even Blackberry for crying out loud!) is simple: save & use. 5 seconds and you're off to the races.
User: "I have a ringtone on my phone I want to use."
Apple: "You don't want it on your phone, you want it on your computer."
User: "But its on my phone already."
Apple: "Yeah, but you need it on your computer."
User: "If I want to use it on my phone, why do I want it on my computer?"
Apple: "So you can transfer it to your phone."
User: "Huh? I have to transfer the ringtone from my phone to my computer so I can put it back on my phone?"
    Apple: "Yes. Make sense?"
User: "Only if you smoke crack."

Family Sharing still does not work. We're testing the 'delete & reinstall' method, but what a pain since pretty much every app fails to update. You lose all your data when you uninstall the app so you have to start from scratch all over again. Seriously need a fix for this since its a key element to sharing 1 iTunes on 1 MacBook.
Found a solution for sharing 1 iTunes on 1 MacBook without duplicating music files. Its not very elegant, but it seems workable.

  • ITunes media on Linux server via SMB - slow imports, changes and stalls

I have an unRAID server (lime-technology.com) which is a Linux based server. I'm getting terrible performance with iTunes. The music playback is fine. But if I import a song file or change any metadata, it has problems. This isn't new, I've read many, many posts complaining about this and other problems concerning SMB shares and file systems. But I think I may be onto something and would like some advice.
This is what I've found so far. Snow Leopard, OS 10.6.x, has a problem with SMB and/or any file system other than HFS+. HFS+ is the common files system for OS X.
There are hundreds of posts on the web complaining about temporary freezes, slowdowns, sometimes crashes with SMB shares and other file systems. I have yet to see Apple acknowledge that there is a problem, but there are a few suggestions out there that seem to have helped people. I'll be trying out some of these this week and post the results here.
From my own observations, specifically with iTunes, I've noticed some strange behavior. Here's my setup. I have an iMac running 10.6.4 (the latest update), the latest iTunes 10. The iTunes app is located on the local internal HD, I have my iTunes library files and all my media on disk 1 of my unRAID server. I'm hard wired to the server via a gigabit router. I have iTunes set to keep the media organized and copy the media files to the server.
When importing a song file into iTunes, the file initially seems to copy at a good rate, the file appears in it's proper place and you can see the size increasing as it copies. Then it stalls for a while, then the name changes to a long hex number for a few seconds and then reverts back to its' normal state. The process can take 30-40 seconds, even with a small song file. I looked at the console and I got the following error message:
    Quote
    +11/8/10 12:24:28 AM /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820] Possible unresolved transaction race -103/(Master Music Library/John Lennon/Rock 'N' Roll,(null))+
The same thing happens when I make a change in the metadata. For example, I added onto the name of an album and for each song it changed I got:
    Quote
    +11/8/10 12:37:36 AM /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820] Possible unresolved transaction race -103/(Master Music Library/John Lennon/Signature Box Set 5 - Walls And Bridges,(null))+
This happens for each file imported or changed even within iTunes.
I followed the first path in the error message: /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/iTunes[2820].
In the /Applications/iTunes.app/Contents/MacOS/ folder I find the following files:
    iTunes
    libgnsdk_musicid.1.7.1.dylib
    libgnsdk_sdkmanager.1.7.1.dylib
    libgnsdk_submit.1.7.1.dylib
where iTunes is a Unix Executable File.
I did some more research and have found some posts about file systems other than HFS+ having trouble with app packages. I believe that all OS X apps are actually packages, like folders, but appearing as a single file. Other file systems don't seem to know what to do with these. There was some talk of "flattening" these app packages, but I haven't gone forward with that yet because I'm not sure I understand it enough yet.
I've also noticed that in the getinfo box under sharing & permissions I usually get "You can read and write", but with apps I get "You have custom access". This was something i had noticed before and thought it was a problem on the server, but I didn't realize it until now, I'm getting the custom access on every app. So I think that's probably normal.
I'm wondering if I'm having a permissions problem with the iTunes Unix Executable File. Right now the permissions are set as follows:
    system: Read & Write
    admin: Read & Write
    everyone: Read only
Maybe it's trying to write to that file or another one and doesn't have the right permissions since the song file is now on the server and that's causing the stalls? I'm over my head here. Anyone have any ideas?

I have the same problem with Excel files on an external drive. The drive is attached to my computer which is on a network and another user accesses the external drive. The problem of "custom access" began after our main server went down. I hope someone can come up with a solution so that I can set the permissions. For now the Excel files are all read only.

  • Just upgraded to itunes 7.0 and want to add a new nano to my itunes

I just bought an additional ipod to take running. I have an existing 20gb Ipod that I bought last year that I had synced to my old Itunes library. When I plugged in the new nano, it made me download itunes 7.0, and now it kept all of my songs in my library, but it won't let me add just certain songs to the nano, or plug in the old 20gb. Can you have 2 diffrent ipods on one I tunes, If not, how do you make this work. I only wanted the nano to put a few songs on for running, as it is alot smaller, but I want to keep my old one as well. Please help me anyone. I'm running a marathon next week, and want to get this ipod working so that I can take it with me to the race.

Yes you can use one iTUnes for multiple ipods. Theres afew methods to doing this which is covered by apple(Link Below), but since both ipods are yours, you most likly want to keep the settings on the old ipod and select "Auto update SELECT" or "Manually update" on the new nano
    New Nano
Connect it to the PC. hit the "Music" tab on the ipods summery page. here you can set it to "Auto update select" where you pick select playlist to put on the nano OR check "Manually manage music" so you can manually drag and drop songs (Or playlist) to the ipod in itunes.
    Old Ipod
When you plug it in, does it list in itunes or in windwos under "My Computer" as ipod or removable storage? Does it show the "Do Not Disconnect" sign on the ipods screen when connected to the PC?

In all seriousness, For some reason whenever I try to access the Itunes store the loading bar appears, fills up to about halfway, then disappears but all that is there is a blank, white area where everything should be... Sometimes an back arrow will light up when I should be in the Itunes store, so I click it and get slammed with an error message- unknown error occure (-1202). I tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, that didn't work; I tried the parental controls trick with iTunes U, that didn't work; I tried praying to the computer and screaming at the computer and, of course, that did not work. Try downloading another app - any app - pick a free app and download it. See if that helps reset the iPad.
If that doesn't work, then reboot the iPad. Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Consolidating itunes wont work??

"Copying Files Failed. The file name was invalid or too small."
That is what i get when i try to consolidate my itunes. ive tried restarting my computer and updated itunes? HELP!

I got a similar message several years ago, except it said the file name was too long. But forgot to tell me which file! It took me a while to figure out what it was doing.
I finally realized itunes was copying all the files over by Date Added (you need to have itunes in either list or cover flow view to show this column). I was consolidating to a new drvie named Q:
After monitoring the Win Explorer folder on the new Q: drive, I noticed the last folder added was always Carole King.
So I opened iTunes, and the content I added after Carole King back in 2006 was a bunch of opera CDS that are stored in the Compilations folder. Maybe iTunes got into some kind of race condition trying to open and close the Compilations folder for all those opera CDs, and stomped on itself as it was closing and opening it.
It also may have been a problem with the diacritical in La Bohème.
I took the opera tracks out of the compilations folder and it finished consolidating.
So - look in your library, see what was added in the itunes list just AFTER the items the consolidate puts in your new location. That is the file iteuns is having probelms with.

  • ITunes 9 killed my Apple TV

Which pretty much says it all. Unless it is a complete coincidence, upgrading to 9 effectively killed my Apple TV sync ability. Windows XP, never had an issue before with the wireless network (been running ATV for nearly four years now) and I don't have any answers other than to downgrade (the error message tells me to make sure port 3689 is open but it always has been and still is).
Any other ideas before I chuck it all and go to something that just is a whole lot easier (I got a Western Digital HD Live for my big screen TV and it beats ATV all to heck and back for half the price so now I'm thinking that rather than deal with this hassle I'll just buy another one for the bedroom and get out of the Apple TV business once and for all -- I've never had sync issues, but sync is such a hassle and is so slow when the WDTV streams lightning fast).

All I'm saying is that every other device I've ever used allows me to connect from that device without any issues whatsoever. Apple TV is the biggest PITA I've ever used -- you need to run iTunes, you need to race back and forth between the two to enter codes, and you can't connect even if you turn off all your firewalls (which, by the way, I don't need to do with any other device).
I still can't get it working and it's a piece of junk -- compared to the Western Digital HD live I can't see why anyone would buy this (and the only reason I did? Because WDTV hadn't been invented yet). So now I'm stuck with this paperweight that I can't even get $50 for. Sigh.
I don't even have any thing else to try -- as I said, it worked before, I didn't change anything (other than the new iTunes) and even with all firewalls turned off at the router and PC (something I do NOT need to do with WDTV) I still can't get connected without the error (iTunes does SEE ATV, and I can enter the code but that's about it). Oh well, I guess it was worth having for at least a few years (oh, wait -- no it wasn't :>)
(Note: all of this may not apply if you use a Mac. Apple has never really taken kindly to us PC users, although they begrudgingly try).

  • Itunes downloads err time out or network reset...

    Dear Sir,
I have 15 available downloads in my Id account.
However, all of them can not be downloaded seccuessfully. and it feed back err 408 or err 3253.
There were problems downloading some purchased items.

    The server has timed out.
There was a problem downloading “Teddy Floppy Ear: The Race HD”.
    The network connection was reset.

It sounds like it's a network issue. Are they
limiting the amount of data you can stream? I would
    check with your network admin.
The sharing might be network, but the CDs hiccuping seems to be a different issue, yes? Don't know if THAT issue has something to do with the age of the computer and the CD drive, but it started happening just about the time the iTunes sharing interruptions started.

Not replying but here to set the record straight.  My problem has been solved by a run of Software Update: Security Update 2013-001, v1.0 and Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 14, v 14.0.  Was surprised not to have been alerted of these by a preference setting, but I fully expect that the solution was in the Java patch.  After these installations, I checked iTunes 11.0.2 immediately for crashes on searching, and on adding music [by dragging from Finder onto the Music library field in the side bar]: NO crashes!  So, it wasn't  iTunes, it wasn't the library.

  • ITunes 5 Changes Music Library Location to Default

ITunes 5 Developers - you might want to check your code somewhere, because installing iTunes5 via Software Update meant my library location randomly changes back to the default, instead of just using the location I had set in iTunes 4.x
(I wondered why my playlists were showing Exclamation Marks everywhere).
I use an external firewire disk to store my music as the internal 80Gb drive isn't big enough to store my CD collection in AAC160.
    Mark.

    Mark hello,
It is a trap many fall into... the 'Location Pointer' as it has become known does not do that... what it does do is tell iTunes where to put the next song you 'import' (rip) into your library and if that Location is not available iTunes will set it to the home iTunes Music folder by default when it starts up.
In your case the program must be trying to access the Ext.hard disk and is not finding it straight away hence it follows the default ruling and resets the 'Location' to home iTunes Music folder... why ? ... not up to speed when iTunes starts.... bad connection to name a couple...
A bit more on the Location of files...
You can store music files anywhere as long as iTunes knows about it... how does it know ?... it gets that information when you 1st put them in the library file... if the music files get moved iTunes may lose track of them and you will have to tell iTunes where they are... now you may think why can't iTunes just find them... as you can have absolute identical files stored elsewhere how would iTunes know which ones to add... the rule is: if you move them tell iTunes about the move.
The way Music files are stored has been changed recently ...
iTunes for Mac OS X uses the file's HFS+ FileID (inode number) rather than the /path/to/filename to locate the file where ever it is moved on the same volume; the file's inode number remains constant.
Although not fully recommended you can now move things around on the boot vol. and iTunes and OS X will keep track of it all but the same senario does not yet exist for other media like Ext. HD's... so there, do not move anything without telling iTunes about the move.
HTH Mark let's know if you need more help .... TP
