Itunes files protected (DJ)

So long story short, i need to use song files and i need to be able to change the formats. (mp3, mp4, etc.) I use a program called serato scratch live that allows me to play music through my turn tables using my mac.
i am able to rip music onto itunes, as well as, d/l from other online stores. The problem is that i purchased a couple hundred songs and now i can't use them. The only way that i found was to burn them and then rip them back onto itunes. That would be great if the sound quality didn't go down.
So, my question would be is there a third party application that can be used on my Mac that would allow me to get/have "rights"? And/or an easier way than burn/rip?
Thank you for listening.
Also, if there is an Apple pesonnel that is reading this, there are over 100,000 djs in the US alone and they dont use itunes for this simple problem, Apple is one of the only online stores that do not give paying customers rights to the music. It is the sole decision of apple and not that of the record labels. So as advice, you can only imagine how much money could be made off djs alone considering the billions of songs they d/l.

Absolutely correct, Dave. As an industry professional, the term we use for this is "perfomance rights".
Here in the US, the three performance rights societies are ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC. Every songwriter MUST associate with one of the three. They grant businesses the permission they need to perform music publicly.
These organizations have representatives scour bars, clubs, retail stores, hotels, restaurants, etc., to see if they have current public performance licenses in place if music is being played. If not, fines can be substantial. Even radio stations must apply for a blanket license with these organizations if they wish to play music to fill in the period of time between commercials.
As far as DRM as a whole is concerned, it's not solely the record companies this protects, but also the songwriters and music publishers (who control the underlying compositions of the recording) as well.
To the original poster: (assuming all public performance licenses are in place...)
Unfortunately, to use iTMS purchases through ScratchLIVE involves burning an audio disc and re-importing into iTunes into one of their supported formats, thus a slight degradation in sound quality. (albeit marginal compared to what the human ear is capable of discerning)
If most of your concern lies with the quality being degraded, the alternative would be to either purchase the actual CD, or subscribe to professional DJ services which issue promotional compilations to their clients for airplay.
Stripping the FairPlay DRM from the iTMS tracks is not an option.

How can I use my protected files on non Apple devices like my Car?  Why are my new files unprotected and my older Itunes files protected?  Is there anyway to remove those protections so I can use the music I paid for LEGALLLY?

How can I use my protected files on non Apple devices like my Car?
Upgrade them to iTunes Plus by following these instructions:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1711
Why are my new files unprotected and my older Itunes files protected?
Because that is what you bought.  I do not know why you bought protected files.
Is there anyway to remove those protections so I can use the music I paid for LEGALLLY?
See iTunes Plus instructions above.  Also, you can use iTunes to burn the tracks to an audio CD which can be used like a regular audio CD.

  • A lot of my iTunes files are protected and unavailable to use in iMovie. Why is this?

A lot of my iTunes files are 'protected and unavailable' to use in iMovie. Why?

check in Finder the suffix of those audio files ... if it's .m4p, those are protected=DRM=not meant/allowed for 'processing' aka using in videos...,
    only legal way is:
    * create a playlist of your m4p filesn in iTunes
    * burn a CD from this playlist in iTunes (... if your Mac comes with a disk-drive ...)
    * import this CD back to iTunes => same title, but now with .m4a = audio, unprotected... could be helpful to add some 'tag' in iTunes to those re-imported music to indicate them as 'processable'...

  • Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?

Why doesn't iTunes add protected MPEG-4 audio files to its music library?  I copied these files to my iMac from an old PC laptop that no longer has internet access.

After downloading via iTunes, I move MP3 files from the default iTunes podcast folder to another folder (on an a external disk), I also change the name of the file and I change some MP3-tags.
You download from the iTunes store, delete the podcast, mess with it, move it around, rename it, change the tags then try to add it back to iTunes?
I want all my files in one index, the iTunes Music Library
In iTunes, right click - get info, click the Options tab and set *Media Kind:* to Music.

  • I moved itunes file to external hard drive and want to move the file on my pc to recycle bin. When I move i get an error message that it cannot delete ituneshelper.dll access is denied. Can I move that file to the recycle bin?

I am trying to free up space on my pc and moving itunes files to external hard drive. I have followed instructions and believe I have file copied to new drive, but I am having trouble moving file to recycle bin as the instructions say. I am getting the following error message: cannot delete ituneshelper.dll:access denied, make sure disk is not full or write protected and file not in use. I know the file is not in use when trying to move. Any help would be most appreciated. I am on Windows XP.

Yes. And you should not have moved that folder. Put it back. To move your iTunes library move the folder from User's Music.

  • Transferring iTunes file settings & iPod to iMac 27" - easy or impossible?

Hi, I'm just about to buy the iMac 27" and I have only one concern about moving off my last PC...but it's a big one!
I have over 100 playlists - lovingly created over many years - and over 150GB of music, books and podcasts on iTunes and the associated iPod. I also have an iPOd Touch which uses some of the playlists but has lots of applications!
Is it possible / easy / impossible / very hard to transfer iTunes files and settings exactly as they are on my PC to the new iMac. If I can do this successfully, I presume that the iPod conversion will happen the first time I sync the device...or does this have to be done separately?
Thanks a million for any help!

If you use the default settings, everything used by iTunes is stored in the iTunes folder. On a Windows PC, it is here
    \Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
On a Mac, it is here
    /Users/<username>/Music/iTunes/
So what you need to do is copy that entire iTunes folder from the Windows PC to a large enough external hard drive. Then connect that external hard drive to a Mac. When iTunes is NOT running, replace the existing iTunes folder on the Mac with the one from the Windows PC. You can either rename the existing iTunes folder, move it to another location, or delete it. The idea is for your Windows PC iTunes folder to take the place of the existing iTunes folder. When you start iTunes on the Mac, it should use the iTunes library file you transferred and iTunes should look the same as on the Windows PC.
Instead of using an external drive, you can do the transfer of the iTunes folder using a network connection between the Windows PC and Mac.
If you changed your settings so that your music and other iTunes media files are not all stored in the Windows PC's iTunes folder, please post back. You can still do it this way, but there are some additional steps.
Note: If you have protected content from the iTunes Store, you will have to register the new Mac as one of your (up to) five computers authorized with your iTunes Store account. You can do so from the Store menu in iTunes. If you are no longer using your Windows PC, be sure to deauthorize it.

  • Can't unlock itunes files

I just bought a new Etec mp3 player. I tried dragging an itunes file onto it but all of them are locked and will not play. Does Itunes work only with Apple products, or is there a way to unlock the music files so they will work with other mp3 players.

If you will look in the "quick links" box on the right side of the main store window, you will see a link for iT Plus. When doing just general browsing in the store, the iT Plus files, will have a "+" sign in front of the individual song price. The complete CD will be clearly marked as an iT Plus CD, right above the "buy" button.
A lot of folks have made an assumption that the store sells files in mp3 format which they never have. Files have always been in AAC format & until approximately the past year, when iT Plus came on board, all files were protected. The protection has always been required by the major record companies & other copyright holders not Apple.

  • Moving iTunes files from PC to Mac

I have most of my iTunes files on my iMac and want to copy them into iTunes on my PC. I thought about moving them from the iMac onto a thumb drive and them importing them into iTunes on the PC, but don't know if the thumb drive can be used on both Mac and PC. If not, any other suggestions to move 4 GB of files the easiest way possible?

Format your thumb drive as fat32 and it will be read by both PC and Mac. If you have less than 4GB of music then you should be fine

  • EBook file protected error on Cocoon reader

    Hi,
I hope someone here can help with a persistent problem!
My wife and I both have Cocoon eBook readers (model BK7021) and have joined our local library.  We have both created Adobe IDs and have successfully downloaded several books form the library to a desktop PC and a laptop, both running Windows 7.  We have Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 installed.
We can both open and read the books on the computers but when we copy them to the eBook readers we both get the same error 'eBook file protected'.
Can someone explain where we are going wrong?
    Thanks
    Roger

Thank you!  Finally tracked it down to HKCU / Software / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Explorer / User Shell Folders / Personal
    - but it took a bit of finding.  Why regedit couldn't find the string I don't know - either I or it stuffed up somewhere.  Would be nice if there were a option in Reader for where you want it put - or are they trying to keep it as simple as possible (eg for idiots like me?).
    Many thanks, Mylenium.

  • I received a gift card and when I redeemed it an error message said that I had some itunes files missing and that I needed to reinstall itunes.  Will I still have all my credits when I download itunes?

I received an online gift card for Father's Day.  When I tried to redeem the gift then I received a error message saying I had some itune files missing and I needed to reinstall/download itunes.  Will I still have my previous purchase credits after downloading and reistalling itunes?

You will, because the credited funds are on your iTunes account, not the application. When you reinstall iTunes just configure it with your old iTunes account and your credits will be there waiting for you.

    Please!

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • I want to transfer my iTunes files to a separate hard drive

I have iTunes stored on my desktop PC. It is the one that I have, so far, stored all iTunes music on. I wanted to transfer these songs to a separate hard drive to free up space on my computer's hard drive. I felt I needed to install iTunes on the separate hard drive which I did today. I then thought I could just find the same type of folder on the separate hard drive that was on the PC but that was not the case so I created a "regular" folder on the hard drive and copied all of the files over. It appears that the files successfully got copied but the screen display does not look the same as it does when I open my PC iTunes and open a music folder from there.
What is the best way for me to copy the files over so I can then delete them from my PC with the assurity that I will not have done something that I will later regret ... such as rendering these copied files as ones I cannot burn to a disc, etc.

Changing the setting as to where to store media will indeed put the media files (but not the rest of the iTunes library files) on the external drive as long as the user also selects to organize the media to the NAS.  If you don't do that, iTunes will only store new media there from that time on.
I would not recommend keeping only media on the NAS.  As I said, NAS can have issues with iTunes and some of the longest topics I have seen here are how to rebuild a library after for some reason the library file on the Mac computer has lost the link information to the media files stored on a NAS.  Some things such as date added, play count, and ratings are only stored in the library file and may be lost if you have to rebuild your library file.
I guess for me the only iTunes reason for having a NAS would be to do direct sharing of the library rather than having to use Home Sharing.  Direct sharing of the library intact requires placing all the iTunes files on the NAS. If you're going to do Home Sharing you might as well opt for a a cheaper, more stable, plain external hard drive.

  • Bought a MBA and am trying to keep iTunes files on an external hard drive. Having problems.

Hi, I bought a MBA 13" and want to keep my iTunes files on an external hard drive to save space. However, I keep running into problems. I can't get the iTunes Media folder to stay on the folder in my external hard drive. Whenever I unplug it, regardless if iTunes is open or not, it changes back to the media file on the MBA. I tried renaming the media folder and deleting it, but the computer just makes another if I do that and then ends up deleting my whole library, forcing me to load it all back from my hard drive. Can anyone help me out on this? Thanks.

In iTunes 11 uncheck the preferences setting in in the iTunes Preferences panel "Advanced > Copy Files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library"

  • Error message when trying to open iTunes files.

I just began having the problem of an error message appearing...
... if I double-click on an iTunes audio file mp3, m4a, etc. or even drag the file directly on to the iTunes application icon.
I did a rebuild of LaunchServices and rebooted but the message still will appear unless the file is opened from an iTunes playlist.
Yet the file plays in iTunes... but the error message is still there and has to be dismissed.
Whereas if I open the same file(s) via the playlist... I get no error message and the file(s) play fine.
Also if I drag the files on to QuickTime 10.0 they play fine without displaying an error message.
Though the error message indicates it's a link problem... from the above... I don't see how it can possibly be since even dragging an audio file directly on to the iTunes application icon still results in the error message appearing.
I only discovered this today when downloading Piezo and I attempted to open the m4a files it saved. So I then tried to open other iTunes files in Finder windows rather than the iTunes playlist window and had the error message appear again.
I don't want to have to add every audio file to an iTunes playlist in order to open it without the error message so can someone please suggest a fix?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Ron
    27" iMac, OSX 10.6.7, iTunes 10.5.2

    Well I solved my problem.
What still doesn't make sense though is that dragging iTune audio files directly on to the iTunes application icon gave me the error message... which is why I originally discounted it as being a potential link problem. If I had been able to get files to open normally (i.e. without an error message) I would have known it was a simple link problem. Strange.
Anyway... relinking my folder of audio files did the trick.
If you don't already know how here are the steps...
iTunes > Preferences > Advanced > click on the "Change" button and browse to the folder that contains all of your iTunes audio files... that's it.
