ITUNES folder and My Music Folder

My ITUNES folder doesn't appear to have as much music in it as My Music folder does.
Can I delete the ITUNES folder contents and reload My Music folder into it (Via ITUNES using Add A Folder - The folder being My Music)?
Are the files linked between the ITUNES folder and My Music or does it duplicate the music MP3 files inside the ITUNES folder?  Thank you.

This doesn't quite address the question you've asked, but take a look at https://discussions.apple.com/message/17267509#17267509 for background.
I'd suggest if you're going to use iTunes you put all the media inside the iTunes Media folder rather than having some at the My Music. Without knowing more details I can't tell if the reason that My Music is that much bigger than iTunes is because everything has been duplicated, or because you also have lots of files in WMA format. I also can't say if deleting the current contents of iTunes and then reimporting wouldn't throw away stuff that only exists in iTunes at present.
It is much better to throw away stuff you've checked you don't need than to throw away too much and then discover you've made a mistake.

  • Having Music in the itunes folder and my music folder

ive always had my music in my My Music folder, but never in my itunes music folder. ive just consolidated all my music files into the itunes music folder for better organisation. if i now delete the music from My Music, will itunes give a ! to every track even though it knows i have it all in the itunes folder?
also, if i add music in the future, do i add it straight into the itunes music folder, or into My Music which my itunes will then automatically add into itunes?

I'm not sure what you did.
    Did you Backup your library?
If it's a backup you should not use it for playback.
If you want to move your library to a new location please use this:

BTW: You posted under iTunes/mac, your Signature shows Windows?

  • ITunes 5 and shared music folder

After upgrading to iTunes 5 i was no longer able to see others in my network who have music to share. I went to another computer on the network with an older version and Shared Music was showing that I was connected. I made sure that my options were set to Search for Shared Music. So, something should show up, but nothing is displayed under the Shared Music file in the sidebar.

Itunes 5.0 will see shares from older versions I'll state that anything older than 4.5 might be a problem though. At this time there is a known bug with sharing and Itunes 5.0 that Apple as yet to address. Just wait for Itunes 5.1 to fix a lot of bugs.

  • ITunes Mantch and managing music folder structure

    Hi,
My current music collection is organized on disk using a folder structure of [ARTIST] > [ALBUM] with the songs in the Album folders. If i enable Match and then delete my music and redownload it. will Match default to some kind of logical /file folder structure or will the subsequest downloads be random? Hope the question makes sense. Thanks in advance...

iTunes Match works well with the iTunes options to organise your library - found under the advanced preferences tab.  Using this approach typical organisation is by artist by album.

I am trying to open iTunes on my Windows 7 PC and am getting the following message...the itunes library can not be found or created.  The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder.  Any ideas?

Let's try this first. Hold down the Shift key while you try to launch iTunes. You should eventually see the following dialog:
Click "Choose library". Browse to inside the following location (depending on what operating system you're running):
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes library
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\iTunes\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\iTunes\
... and open the iTunes library you find in there.

  • Why does my finder nest an iTunes music folder within my music folder and not let me delete it?

I'm working on the arduous task of combining and winnowing down my multiple iTunes libraries and music folders onto a single drive. The last thing I have to do is carve out the duplicate tracks from a time I tried to move my library to another drive and it rewrote all of my tracks and added a "1" to the file name (making it virtually impossible to use duplicate finder siftware.
In going systematically through every artist and album folder in my new iTunes/Music folder I found a subfolder called "Music" which essentially mirrors the folder it resides within. In that folder is another "Music" folder with exactlay the same comtents. It's like those russian dolls.
At first I though I found the reason why my folder was taking so much space on my drive (1.4 tb when it should noly be about 70 gb), so I though I would just delete it--but it will not allow me to, giving me the error code -8072.
    Any thoughts out there?
    Thanks for your time.

Here are typical layouts for the iTunes folders:
Your library is in the newer layout and you are trying to move/have moved the media folder (red outline) to D:\Music. The extra Music folder is supposed to separate other types of media within the iTunes Media folder.
If you don't want (or have room for) your library in the usual location of <User's Music>\iTunes, then you are usually much better off moving the entire iTunes folder to the root of your prefered drive, e.g. as D:\iTunes and accessing the relocated library by holding down shift as you start iTunes. The media folder would then be D:\iTunes\iTunes Media and music would end up at D:\iTunes\iTunes Media\Music\<Artist>\<Album>. Keeping this structure make moving the library easier in future.
Since it seems you've already started moving things around it is probably too late to move the library in a single step. See Make a split library portable for details of how you can proceed.

  • ITunes will not open and my Music folder is empty

When I try to open iTunes (even when holding shift) it says "The "iTunes" folder could not be found or created, and is required. The default location for this folder is inside the "Music" folder."
My music folder is empty, however, the music is still on the computer - I have the same amount of space remaining on my hard drive as I did before this happened.
Any suggestions? I have it all backed up fortunately.

Hello, Following are quick tips to try. Along with a knowledge article on how to completely remove itunes
    1. Create a new user, attempt to launch iTunes and see if it opens
    2. Run Disk Utility on the user account that is not able to open iTunes, relaunch after repairs are complete

  • I need help every time my iTunes library updates i get this error messege: The iTunes.itl file cannot be found or created. The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder. but the file should be there.

Every time I have to upgrade iTunes it gives me this messege:'The default location for this file is in the "iTunes" folder in the "Music" folder.' the file should be there but I don't understand why it does this every time Apple upgrades the Itunes library. Its on the computer somewhere but it only affects this login on my computer (meaning on this Windows Account). Why does my iTunes do this? Then I have to spend hours placing all my libraries back together and all my music back into the library. Which usually takes me a few days to sort all out. What is wrong with my iTunes? The iTunes folder is a folder in my Music folder where I store the iTunes music/files/libraries at on my computer so I can have all of the iTunes files in one place on my computer.

I have a Windows 7 operating system my computer runs from.

  • ITunes created a second "Music" folder within root folder

I've had pretty fair luck for years with iTunes, and then today hit several snags. I had some settings go South on me after some resets from iPhone issues.
Today I noticed that when I added a new song file to the library, it was copying the file into the designated Media Folder (I use the "Music" folder) but leaving an original in its original folder. Copying instead of moving the file. Previously when I did this, the files would be moved into the Music folder and be organized into artist sub-folders, and there wouldn't be another copy left behind in the original folder.
So I tried to "Organize Library" and it went through the entire library, created a new "Music" folder into which it put some (not all) songs and files into new subfolders.
Now I have a "Music" folder with lots of empty folders (but not all, so I can't just delete them all without openoing each one first) and another "Music" folder within that folkder with a bunch of new sub-folders.
Additionally, my poriginal issue is still present, it is copying, not moving files when I add them to the library.
    Any thoughts?

I found and answered your post in the other thread regarding the extra layer of folders but it looks like you've moved on already.
Perhaps my script ConsolidateByMoving will do what you're after with regard to moving files in this thread.
