ITunes folder monitoring/management

Is there any way of making iTunes automatically monitoring a folder for changes and I mean newly added music, deleted music, etc. I use OneDrive to connect my macbook and windows laptop and they share the same music folder, so I want changes that I make on the windows reflected on the mac in iTunes. I use Winamp on windows and it doesn't have an issue with folder monitoring, but it doesn't work the other way around. I like iTunes on a mac but this is a feature that I really miss.

Not really.  iTunes doesn't actively look at folders, it generally only knows if something has happened when you make a change to the iTunes library in use. It makes a note in its library database file (iTunes Library.itl) which is how it keeps track of what is in your collection.  If you have it set up so two copies of iTunes are sharing media but each has its own library files then changes in content made to one won't transfer to the other.  You can change it so both computers use the same library file, but they can't do it at the same time.
Automatic updating is to a greater (but not perfect) extent possible with Home Sharing, but that only works with iTunes Store purchases.

  • Itunes and folder monitoring

Will iTunes ever use folder monitoring? To be honest, it's the one thing iTunes is missing. Don't give me the "itunes doesn't want to mess with you files" stuff. I just want iTuens to monitor a folder so when i add songs to it, it is added into ituens, not that hard to do.
How about it? does anyone out there think folder monitoring should be added to iTuens? i know apple is all user friendly, but folder monitoring needs to be added to iTunes to make it that way. just please add it. i'd love ituens that much more.... and would consider buying a mac that much more.

Will iTunes ever use folder monitoring?
Apple has not made any statements about this.

  • Using the iTunes folder within Music on PC; difference between "managed" and "referenced"

On my PC, I currently have all of my music within the Music folder (C:\Users\Stephen\Music) all split by artist into relevant folders.
There is also an iTunes folder within this Music folder, however only a small amount of music is within this folder (after doing some research, any album I ripped from my own CDs went into this folder directly).
I have since noted that there's a difference with how iTunes refers to the music within my Music folder as opposed to the iTunes folder within the Music folder ("referenced" as opposed to "managed").
Previously whenever I wanted to add any music to iTunes I would simply click "add folder to Library" under File. I haven't had the "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library" option ticked.
    My questions are:
Should I have everything in the iTunes folder as listed above? Is there any benefit in arranging it this way?
If I make this change, should I also make sure I have the "copy files to iTunes Media folder" option ticked?
If there is a benefit in having my music "managed" by iTunes as opposed to just being "referenced", is it possible for me to just dump all of my music from \Stephen\Music\variousbands to Stephen\Music\iTunes\variousbands, without it screwing anything up within iTunes?
If I now want to move all my music to an external hard drive, will this effect anything? i.e. could I just move the whole \Stephen\Music folder to the external HDD and would this be fine? Or would I need to have it in the iTunes folder first and then move that folder across?
Many thanks in advance for any assistance. I just want to make sure I have the correct set up and not run into any problems when moving to my external HDD!

Yes, there is a benefit in having your iTunes library organized inside the iTunes Media folder.
If you place new content inside the iTunes Media folder before adding it to the library then the setting of the "Copy files..." option isn't important. Letting iTunes make copies of files added from outside the media folder leaves you with having to manage them later, or possibly leads to a situation where you end up importing them again leading to duplicates.
You can't (in general) move your files around without iTunes losing track of them. A special case exists when the files are inside the designated iTunes Media folder, which in turn is inside the iTunes folder that contains the library files. When the library is in this shape the entire iTunes folder and its subfolders can be moved as a unit between drives, or even computers, and iTunes won't lose track of the media. Having the library organized in this portable state, and backed up, should ensure you can migrate or restore your library when the need arises.
If you want to reorganize the library properly do the following:
Use the option File > Library > Organize Library... > Rearrange files in the folder "<Media Folder">, if not greyed out, then press OK.
    Close iTunes.
Copy the entire iTunes folder to the root of your chosen drive, e.g. to X:\iTunes, then delete the file X:\iTunes\iTunes Music Library.xml as this file will be redundant in the new layout.
Press down and hold shift as you click the icon to start iTunes. Keep holding until asked to choose or create a library.
If iTunes opens normally, close it and go back to step 4.
Click Choose and browse to the new copy of the library file, e.g. X:\iTunes\iTunes Library.itl.
Use the option File > Library > Organize Library... > Consolidate files and click OK. When the process is complete the iTunes folder and media files that were connected to iTunes on your original drive can be deleted. Though ideally not before you backup your library to another disk.

  • How to manage one iTunes folder from multiple computers via a network?

    Hi there,
The Setup:  I have a macbook air, my partner has a macbook pro, we both have iPhones with our own iCloud accounts. There is an apple TV and an Airport Extreme with an external USB HDD in there too (which could potentially be plugged into the ATV via ethernet if need be).
What I want to be able to do:
1 - NOT have to store the music on my MBA
2 - Still be able to add music to/alter playlists and movies in the iTunes library that my MBA uses, from my MBA (ie if I end up with new music or movies on           the MBA I need a way to transfer it easily, -keeping in mind that not all the video will fit on the MBP HDD)
3 - Use the one iTunes music folder for both the MBA and the MBP (to avoid having to update both)
4 - Sync my iPhone with my iCloud email and contacts etc...
5 - Sync my partners iCloud with her own email and contacts etc...
6 - Sync music from the 'common' iTunes folder to either iPhone
7 - Use apps from my iTunesstore account on my both iPhones
8 - Stream video from the 'common' iTunes folder to the ATV in HD
Can someone please tell me how I make ALL of the above possible?
Things i'm not sure of are:
A- Where do I put my iTunes music folder? -Locally on the MBP, or on the External HDD in the airport Extreme?
B- Which of the above would iTunes match help with?
         C- Would homesharing be used?
D- What usernames/accounts do I have to put into the iPhones adn where? (itunes or icloud etc...)
For some reason I just can't get my head around how this setup will work.
    Thanks in advance!

I'm sort of in the same boat. We've got an iMac with separate User Accounts set up and are currently sharing the same iTunes and iPhoto libraries along with streaming them to our Apple TV.
Right now I'm the only one with an iPod, however she'll be getting one in a couple of weeks.
We also just picked up a MacBook yesterday and I'd like to be able to sync certain libraries like iTunes and iPhoto so that no content gets duplicated on either the iMac or MacBook and so that we both have access to the current libraries for each program on our iPods and AppleTV.
I have an external hard drive that I back up the iMac on and I assume I could manually keep things current with that but there's got to be an easier way...that's why these are Macs right?

  • Downloading to itune folder

I installed The Dr. Laura Media Center so i could get their podcast, because itune doesn't download from their site. I must use their application which downloads their podcast to the default music folder. I use their program to change the folder for downloading to the podcast folder in my itune music folder. But I had to create a folder in the podcast folder title-" Dr. Laura " to contained the downloaded podcasts.
Question-when i launched itune and select podcast, the "Dr. Laura" is not listed. When I go back to to the itune folder and check under podcast, I see the Dr. Laura folder with the podcast. Does anyone know is happening ?

It's not listed anywhere in the library, I type in Dr. Laura and nothing showed up. I looked under artist in alphabetical order without success. I still see the podcast folder " Dr, Laura " , which I created in itunes⇒podcasts⇒( which contained 3 files ), Dr. Laura⇒Dr Laura - Aug 31 2007 - Hour 1.mp3, Dr Laura - Aug 31 2007 - Hour 2.mp3, Dr Laura - Aug 31 2007 - Hour 3.mp3. I don't see any other downloads for 9/1/07-09/207. Its supposed to be automatic.
Any other ideas? Should I re-installed and just make the default folder in the music section ?

  • Moving a Folder from the iTunes Folder to My Own File Structure

I'm trying to move a folder from the default iTunes folder to a folder on another drive where I am managing the file structure. This allows me to file music as I would like to on the disk an makes things much easier to find when I need to.
Recently I've noticed that when I do this I lose some of the song meta data such as the image and rating which is kind of annoying. Is there any way to do this and not lose meta data?

If the external drive is in NTFS format (which is how most new drives are shipped), the Mac can't write to it. Reformat it with Disk Utility, putting it into Mac OS Extended format.

  • Removing files from iTunes folder that are no longer in library

    Hi all,
Quick question that I require help answering.
I'm trying to tidy up my iTunes library/ Physical storage.
I currently have 1600 songs within iTunes, but through bad management in the past I actually have (I know this after reimporting the library to another machine as a test) 1700 songs within the physical iTunes Folder structure. What I need in order to slipstream my storage is to remove those extra 100 songs lying about in my physical folder without losing the 1600 currently in use and present in iTunes.
Does anyone have an easy way of removing the extra files?
    Thanking in advance,
    Steve

Use File > Add folder to library... and select your iTunes Media folder. Anthing already in the library will be ignored, anything else will be added. Once the process is complete sort the library on the Date Added column and remove the tracks that have just been added, sending them to the recycle bin.

  • Itunes folder on external drive keeps reverting back to local iTunes folder

So I have all my digital music, pictures and videos stored on an external drive. I have 3 different MBP acessing these files and itunes randomely reverts back to the default local itunes folder and then I have to change and organize all over again which includes dups that I have to manage and delete later. What a pain in the arse! Does anybody have a solution that prevents this from happening, running Lion on all 3 MBP.

They are all using the library (and by that I specifically mean the library file, not just the media files) at the same time?  Maybe when one is actively using the library file it prevents the others from using it or somehow interferes and makes them think the library on the external is not usuable and they revert to the internal one.
If this is set up through some fancier nettwork then probably hte person who can answer your question will want to know the details.  iTunes typically revets to default when it cannot find a library on an external drive and perhaps something is happening with the network to change the identity of the drive in the way your computer perceives it.

  • Can't stop synching ITunes folder to network server

My manager has all his music on his work laptop and everytime he logs in to the network, all his music is backed up onto the server. I have deleted all the music from the 'My Documents/ITunes' folder and moved it to a new 'C:\ITunes' folder, so it will not sync anymore. The problem is that when I try to "add folder to library" (the C:\ITunes), all the music is copied back into the MyDocs. Is there a way for ITunes to read directly from the folder 'C:\ITunes' and keep from making duplicates or placing music in folders that are syncing to the server? (any syncable 'USERS' folders/profiles)

    Hello George,
You are able to reach your public IP and the apache server on the client OS X.
Check your network settings on your mini (OS X Sever).
have you turned on DHCP services on the server as well as on the router ?
do you have DNS service running on router and on OS X server ?
just make sure there are no services conflicting with eachother and provide a fixed internal IP address to your sever and make your the Web service is listning to that.
Is the mini also connected via aiport ? if so, turn it off and plug in the ethernet cable, just to make sure that they are not conflicting. Might explain why you can reach it locally and not externally.
In the Server Admin check the Access settings.
Reboot the server and forward the correct ports to the right address and try again.
I don't think it is a typical OS X Server problem but purely network (router) related.

  • Launching iTunes causes monitor(s) to go crazy

I'm using Vista and iTunes 7.7. This started since I tried putting iTunes in compatibility mode. I'm having tons of permissions errors since the last update. This takes the cake though.
When I launch iTunes both monitors drop to what looks like 16 or 32 colors. It stays this way until I quit iTunes and everything returns to normal.
    Has anyone experienced this? Tnx.

I am having the same problem. When Itunes 7.7 installed, I started getting problems with the mobiledevicehelper stopped working. That now seems to be gone, but EVERY time I start Itunes, it opens in normal high resulution, then the screen goes black, then Itunes comes on again running in the lowest possible resolution and amount of colours.
I found that if I press ctrl/alt/delete and open task manager, if I stop the sprtcmdr process, Itunes restarted in high or normal resolution.
Now that doesnt work anymore for some reason.

  • Opalis Folder Monitor Stops Working

We have a Folder Monitor object in a policy that works fine for a while when you starts it and notices changes made to files under the monitored folder, and does what it is supposed to do. However, after an undetermined amount of time (sometimes hours, sometimes
days) it just stops seeing any changes. If we stop and re-start the monitor policy then it will work again for a while, and then the same thing happens.
Has anyone seen this behavior? Any ideas?

    Jerry,
It is not fixed in Orchestrator, I believe it is on the list of items Microsoft are looking to improve but when or if it get resolved I couldn't say.
If the time delay in detecting updates to that folder are not super critical I would suggest you use a Monitor Date/Time Object and then a Get File Status object, and then process your policy results from the Get File object, rather than a monitor folder.
The reason being that the Get File will make a fresh connection to the folder each time it checks so will handle the Network blips.
P.S. You will need to check the File Management objects as I might have got the Get File Status Object name wrong.  Been a while since I last looked at the Opalis objects, I know the functionality is there as I used it for a number of Opalis customers.
It is no good me looking at Orchestrator as the names have changed between Opalis and Orchestrator.

  • Automatically Add to iTunes folder is not working in iTunes 10

I recently installed iTunes 10 (x64) on my Win7Pro computer. iTunes does not seem to do anything with the Automatically Add to iTunes folder. The only things I have done so far are to set the main music folder to my server folder (for backup purposes) and set it for iTunes to manage my files. So far, I have added folder and files to the Automatically Add to iTunes folder but nothing happens, even after reboots of either iTunes or my computer. Any info or setting I am missing to make this happen would be appreciated. Thank you for your time in advance.

    yeah. . .
this "feature" is wonderful. . . if you want to throw away all your music....
I wanted to use iTunes to organize my music via iTunes library folder organization... you know "Artist\Album\Track No - Title"
    so -
    I installed iTunes 10
In preferences, I set my iTunes media folder to "D:\Media Files"
went to my windows media library folder,
hit ctrl+a, ctrl +x to 'select and cut' all the subfolders
went to the "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder that was created by iTunes under "D:\Media Files"
    hit ctrl+v to paste
Watched "Automatically Add to iTunes" start filling with the folder it had "cut"
And watched as the folders then started to go away (i assumed that iTunes was doing its magic and organizing them under "D:\Media Files\Music")
when done. . . "Automatically Add to iTunes" was completely empty...
and so was the iTunes library. . . and nothing in "D:\Media Files\" except for:
    "D:\Media Files\Automatically Add to iTunes"
    and
    "D:\Media Files\.iTunes Preferences.plist"
furthermore. . . no folder named "not Added" which is were they were supposed to go if the autmatic add to library failed.
did a search from the command line:
    dir D:\*.mp3 /s/b
    and
    dir D:\*.mp3 /s/b
in both cases. . . "file not found"
thanks crapple. . . I just lost about 2 grand in music that I actually payed for as well as 10 years of music collecting.
google "unit testing." you novices should look into it.

  • Organizing an iTunes folder without keeping 2 folders?

I already have 12GB of music in a folder but I want it to be organized with iTunes. Is there any way to do this without keeping an extra file AND the organized iTunes media folder? I want to be able to manage my music through iTunes and for the tags to be the same in my music folder without having to have 2 folders of replicas because I already don't have enough space even without my songs taking twice as much memory. I'm pretty sure I pulled this off a long time ago on my desktop but I'm not sure. Could someone please help me out if there's a way? Thanks in advance
    Message was edited by: Illogic916

The easiest way to do what you want is to go to iTunes preferences and under the Advanced tab, check the "Keep iTunes Folder organized" checkbox. iTunes will then organize all of you files in folders by artist, sub-folders by album, music files in the album folders. Since it sounds like this is the way you are organizing things manually, you may as well let iTunes do it, unless you are downloading illegal songs which have no ID3 tags. If that is the case, shame on you!
There is a second way to get the songs into iTunes without using the import function, just open a finder/explorer windows over iTunes, find the folder that has the songs you want, or the top level folder that holds all the folders with all the songs you want, and drag and drop it into the iTunes window. Viola! iTunes will import all the songs/albums/artists you drop in. If you have no checked "Keep iTunes Folder organized" under the advanced tab of the preferences pane, then they will stay just where you have them in your folder hierarchy.
Another hint for those who have had to manually reorganize their libraries for any reason and now iTunes cannot find anything. With or without "Keep iTunes Folder organized" checked, just open the iTunes folder. With iTunes NOT running, find and delete the 2 through 4 files (not folders, just files) with the word Library in them. Now start up iTunes, it will come up empty, ask you to create a new library, etc. Check the create new library option. When iTunes finishes starting up and you are looking at an empty library, take and drag and drop the iTunes Music folder from your iTunes folder into the empty iTunes library window and POOF iTunes will import everything with all the folder information correct. If you have checked "Keep iTunes Folder organized," it will fix any organizational errors you may have, if not, it will keep the order of folders and sub-folders you created.

  • Corrupted iTunes folder within iPod_Control

I'm the owner of and ipod mini. About 2 months ago my ipod ran into a series of problems which lead to a persistent folder appearing with an exclamation point. The people at the apple service hotline told me this represented a software error but that they could not fix it since it was no longer under the one year warranty. So after about a week of trying all sorts of things to fix it including restoring it with the menu+select function and then restoring it using iPod Updater, I gave up. and i saw it this past few days on my nightstand and decided to give it another shot. now i'll skip a little bit and get right to the point. i fixed it slightly, i got it to get past the error sign. but today i tried opening it up in iTunes and my computer (running on Windows XP) gave me an error message saying that the iTunes folder within ipod_control was corrupted/unreadable. now for my question: is it possible to fix/replace this corrupted file so my ipod can function and communicate with iTunes, or should i just give up and go back to CDs?
    Medion XL 2000   Windows XP

I also have this problem. I have been told to restore my ipod using the ipod updater 10-12-2005 ( i have an ipod mini) and when i tried this, it said Ipod manager internal error. I was then told to try to reboot my computer and try to restore my ipod, but I recieved this same error message. I have now found that along with the error message saying : file or directory ipod_control\itunes\temp file is corrupt and unreadable
    down at the system tray,
When i go to edit my playlists or put new music onto the ipod, when i unplug it, the new updates arent on the pod.
Christmas eve, the 1 year warranty is up. HELP!
If it's not fixable, do you think i could trade it for a replacement iPod?

  • How can I view the iTunes folder under iPod in My Computer? (transfering)

I selected "Manually manage music" in iTunes under the iPod summery but still can't see the iTunes folder when I select my iPod in My Computer. Can anyone help please!

Manually manage means you can drag stuff into or delete stuff out of the iPod from WITHIN iTunes.
The area where that stuff is stored on the iPod is hidden from normal view if you look at the iPod in My Computer.
If you want to see those hidden files and folders, see this older post by MacMuse...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=797432&#797432
Otherwise stick with iTunes for moving stuff in and out of the iPod.
