ITunes Folder on Time Capsule missing after MATCH

To Start, I will explain my set-up.  I have an Extreme, connected to my Cable Modem, in my Computer-Room, which is hardwired to my primary Mac Pro computer.  I then have the Extreme wirelessly bridged to my Time Capsule, in my Family-Room, which is hardwired to my Mac Mini, which is in turn hardwired to my TV.  I also have a Macbook Pro in the down-stairs Bed-Room, an iPad in the up-stairs Bed-Room and an iPhone in my pocket, all on the Wi Fi network.  I keep my iTunes, iPhoto, Mail, etc., data files on the Time Capsule and have links on the other devices so that each App on each Computer retrrieves the data files from the Time Capsule (only problem is that only one computer can pull the data at any given time, which is not a problem for me).  All worked great until I ran MATCH on my iTunes library.
MATCH itself seems to have worked well enough, though I did have to run it a few different times to get all the music uploaded.  My library is pretty large, so I am not real sure yet if EVERY thing got uploaded, but it appears that it did.  But afterwards I recieved errors and now my iTunes folder is missing from the Time Capusle, though the disk space appears to be still taken up.  Not only that, but I can not seem to write to the Time Capsule at all, and although I have been able to copy some of my data from the Time Capsule, some I can not.  I was able to copy the Mail folder from the Time Capsule to the Mac Mini, but I keep gettings errors when I try to open Mail on the MAc Pro, then Mail shuts down.  I downloaded all the Music from MATCH to my MacPro, but it is just the Music, not the Movies, Videos, etc..  My iPhotos will not seem to copy.
I have not figured out any way to run any kind of Disk Utilities on the Time Capsule and do not have any idea what I can do other then wipe the disk and start again.  This is a 2 TB unit and my second Time Capsule, the first was returned to Apple due to other problems.  I have never used it to do backups, just as a NAS, though I do have most of my data copied onto other drives.  I am sure I will loss some data and will spend a lot of time trying to rebuild, if I can't do something with the Time Capsule.
  Any body with any ideas?

To me, it acts like the external drive "went to sleep", but i'm pretty sure that's not the case. Nor can i find any place in Mac OS/X to control that other than the power settings, and all my hardware is set to NOT sleep.
Chances are pretty good that the "sleep" function for this drive is built-in as part of the drive's firmware and you will have little or no control over it. Most drives do incorporate this "feature."
The other odd thing is that I have a fairly extensive set of Sonos music servers around the house which access that same music drive on that same time capsule.. and it NEVER loses access to anything... could be because Sonos doesn't use the iTunes library to access the music.
As you probably are already aware, iTunes is basically composed of two parts: 1) the iTunes Library, and 2) the iTunes Media. Typically these are both stored within the user's Music folder, but they can be in totally separate locations.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think Sonos relies on the iTunes application, but instead, will access media files directly ... in this case, the iTunes Media files located on the hard drive connected to the TC.

  • ITunes Media folder on Time Capsule

    Hi,
Follow http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1364 instructions, I moved my "iTunes Media" folder to time capsule shared folder.
There have been no problems for video and mp3s.
However, I noticed accessing of my iPhone Apps from iTunes library is painfully slow. Just give an idea, "Get Info" on "Angry Birds" takes 30sec to appear, update "Angry Birds" tooks 30min to finish and during the progress the iTunes does not have any response (progress showing "Processing file")
The problem does not exist on Mac.
    Is this normal?
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Baoshi

The issue is the TC is slow to start up.. each time you start your Mac.. it will not be able to spin up the TC fast enough to locate the iTunes library so you will get an error and have to manually direct the iTunes to the library.. over and over and over..
    The TC is really unsuitable.
But there are suggestions on how to do this.. move the whole application to the TC.. and use an icon on the desktop to start up the iTunes.. I am not sure of the details.. but I have seen the description.. as long as the software starts up from the same place as the library it should work..
    Ask in the iTunes section.
There is nothing wrong with the TC .. it is working as it was designed.. as a target for Time Machine.

  • Itunes Library on time capsule-Help please.

I read this can be done to free up some room. I made a copy of my music folder in time capsule, pointed to it with itunes, but the file paths in itunes do not change. I made sure my time capsule was mounted, held option, launched itunes, selected the itunes folder in my time capsule, & still had no luck. This was the main reason why i purchased the device. Can someone tell me how this is done?

Please, dear Apple friends, help me! Itunes is driving me crazy....
I thought I had the solution; i created a new library folder on my TC, copied all my music files to the library in the itunes window. After copying one night and one day (which is strange, since all the files essentially already were placed on the TC, but anyway), I got an error warning saying that the copying had stopped because of a fault with file ". What this is, I dont know.
And besides that, half of the songs which were copied have the hated ! - symbol which means they cant be found...
It's so frustrating to have more than 25 gigabyte of music and not being able to play songs. Hopefully someone has a useful tip, because I'm starting to dislike Itunes. And I dont want that!

  • External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.

External hard drive is not working on airport time capsule even after 7.7.2 firmware update.
I have the latest Airpor Time capsule 2gb. I specifically bought it so that I could have an external hardrive set up to wirelessly house my itunes library and movies. When i connect the drive, all i get is that the disk needs to be repaired.
the drive can works fine when connected to the macbook pro and I have run the verify and repair features in disk utility. I have also reset the airport timecapsule as well following these changes and still no change.
The 7.7.2 update says that it addressed the usb issue of not showing the drives but there are still problems as I cannot get it to appear.
    Please help.
    Thanks

How is the hard drive formatted?
Have you tried using a powered USB hub with the drive when it is connected to the Time Capsule?
(The USB port on the Time Capsule is borderline as far as power is concerned....you may need to use a powered hub.....even if the hard drive has its own power supply)
If the drive is formatted correctly....and....it has ample power, it will "show up" when you open AirPort Utility, click Edit, then click the Disks tab at the top of the next window.
In the example below, my Time Capsule drive is named "Backups" and another drive named "WD Drive" is connected to the USB port on the Time Capsule.
You should see the name of your Time Capsule drive (named "Data" unless you have changed the name) and the name of the USB drive if you perform the same check.
    What do you see?

  • Trying to put my Itunes Library on Time Capsule

I read this can be done to free up some room. I made a copy of my music folder in time capsule, pointed to it with itunes, but the file paths in itunes do not change. I made sure my time capsule was mounted, held option, launched itunes, selected the itunes folder in my time capsule, & still had no luck. This was the main reason why i purchased the device. Can someone tell me how this is done?

I did this successfully. I copied my entire iTunes folder to the network drive.
then 'hid' the old iTunes folder on my mac by renaming it, just to be sure it worked ok before deleting the old folder.
then created a new iTunes folder on the macBook which i populated with aliases for every file in the 'real' folder (now living on the network drive).
i didn't change the 'iTunes folder' inside iTunes - this still points to the folder on the macBook, which of course contains aliases, not real files.
this works. i then removed my old iTunes folder from the macbook. whew!
however... the problem is that my network drive didn't work properly, and i've now had to return it to apple. so i've had to re-instate my old iTunes setup. ho hum! but that's another issue... what your're asking is certainly possible.
while it was working, i did find iTunes a bit slow over the network. things like accessing song information took seconds instead of being instant. skipping to the next song sometimes took seconds as well.

  • HT1449 Can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?

    Hi
Would anyone know if I can I move my iTunes library onto Time Capsule and share it across my devices (similar to a NAS drive)?
This would give me some hard drive space on my iMac and more importantly mean my iTunes library is available all the time. Although I have Home sharing I need my iMac on and if not I use iTunes on iCloud I always seem to be downloading the tracks I need.
    Current configuration / devices:
    iMac 20-inch, Mid 2007 - nearly full!
Processor  2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    Memory  4 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
    OSX Mavericks
    Time Capsule (1TB)
    iPad
    iPod Touch
    Apple TV
    iTunes 11.1.5 (5)
    Many thanks

What "devices" are these?  By devices I normally understand i-devices and not computers.  How many computers?
If you put the whole library on the Time Capsule (TC) you can only use it with one computer at a time because the iTunes library file can only be opened by one copy of iTunes at a time.  If you put only media on the TC but have a copy of the library files on each computer you can use media by multiple computers but you then have the headache of trying to make sure that any changes done to the collection by one computer are mirrored by the libraries on the other computers which will be more or less independent.
I hope this TC isn't also your backup drive.  When the TC drive fails (and it will someday) then your whole collection is gone.  Don't rely upon Apple to always have copies for you to download.  For one, if a distributor puylls an item then it is gone period.  Additionally, Apple only keeps media, not the actual organization that is your set of library files.  If you do this, buy another backup drive.

  • Time capsule problems after OS reinstall

After getting a blue screen on restart I had to do an archive/OS reinstall today. The reinstall worked fine but I am now having problems accessing my Time Capsule.
At first my computer didn't even recognize my time capsule. After restarting my time capsule, my computer recognized it. However, when I tried to open time machine to access the files, it stalled on "connecting to backup volume" for about 45 minutes and never connected. Similarly, the backup stalls on "preparing backup." I tried to stop backing up but it is currently stalled on "stopping backup." Finally, time capsule has disappeared from the menu at the top of my screen.
Any thoughts on addressing these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem as well. I did an archive and install with OSX, then updated to 10.5.5 and now all the TC does is spin and say preparing. A sample from the console is

    It's good for that . . .
But also I don't keep all my stuff in my Mac.
    But not for that.
This older and not day-by-day usage files I want to store in the time machine.
You can do that (see below), but how are you going to back them up?   If your only copies are on the TC, when (not if) it fails, you risk losing your only copy of the data.
Is it possible to split TC in two partitions.
No, but there are some workarounds, including making a fixed-size disk image on it to "reserve" some space.  See #Q3 in Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.
But you still won't have backups of the stuff you put there.
You don't say what kind of Mac you have.  If it's a desktop model, just keep the external HD connected to it, and let Time Machine back it up along with your internal HD.
However, it sounds like you may have a laptop, where that's not going to be convenient.  In that case, your best bet might be to copy the external HD to a disk image on the TC as above, then keep the HD in a safe place.
To finish, when i enter the TC and go through the Time line how can I get a file from there and move it back to Mac hd.
Via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
You might also want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse the rest of the FAQ.

Back up is very slow on 2 tb time capsule. After 2 days only 60 gb of 320 gb completed. Have connected ethernet cable. Any suggestions?

Yes, that's terribly slow.  You should get somewhere in the neighborhood of 20-24 GB/hour via Ethernet, assuming there isn't a lot of conflicting network traffic or your Mac's CPU is under very heavy load.
Are you sure you're actually using the Ethernet connection, instead of WIFI?   To check, turn Airport off.  If the backup fails, it's on WIFI.  In that case, you need to set Ethernet as the "preferred" network, via System Preferences > Network.  Click the "gear" icon at the bottom of the sidebar and select Set Service order.  Then drag Ethernet above Airport.  When both Airport and Ethernet are on, that will make OSX select Ethernet over Airport.
If that doesn't help, see #D2 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • ITunes loses connection to media Folder on Time Capsule

    Hi,
I have succesfully moved my iTunes Mediathek to a new Time Capsule.
I changed the place of the media folder to the new destination (Settings-->Advanced).

  • Storing iTunes media on Time Capsule to stream to ATV

Can someone please detail the steps I need to move my itunes movies and music to new Time Capsule.  I have done this and Apple TV is unable to recognize the library.
Here is what I've done so far:
    1. Copied the iTunes music folder to the TC
    2. Changed the library location to this folder in iTunes Preferences
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks!

Do you need to keep a local copy of your iTunes library for some reason? If not delete the local copy and keep only the copy on your Time Capsule.
Once this is done, on your Time Capsule, right click on your iTunes folder and select create an alias. Move this alias to your local Music folder and rename it iTunes (instead of "iTunes alias". That way your computer will think it plays the local copy but it will be redirected to the TC.
That's how mine is set up and it works good. I did the same with iPhoto

  • Itunes library on time capsule does not work.... HELP!

    Dear Mac-friends!
I moved my itunes library from my lacie disc to my brand new Time Capsule. But since then I only had trouble.
Everytime I restart my macbookpro and Itunes I get a message that the library cant be found. Even though the time capsule is running.
In my 'unknowingness' to solve this problem, I gathered all music files and erased the itunes library files (xml etc). Dont ask me why, I know it sounds stupid.
But how do I make these musicfiles into a library again? And more specifically into a library that Itunes 'remembers' even after shutting down my macbookpro?
Thanks already for your advice! And sorry for my 'stupidity'...

  • Moving iTunes library from Time Capsule back to MacBook HD?

Recently I moved my iTunes media to my Time Capsule to free up space on my MacBook Pro. I want to move it back. How do I do that? When I look at my "Music" folder, the files seem to be there and then I double click on a song file and it opens. THis is after I have reset the file location preference.

    Get her back
Are the files stored in the Aperture Library or do you have them stored somewhere else?
And if you can't answer that one you will need to bring her back.

  • Advice: transferring itunes library to Time Capsule?

We just got a Time Capsule (wireless router + HD) and I would like to move my itunes libary there, so that when I load itunes on my laptop (thinkpad, winxp sp2) it will look in the itunes library on the external Time Capsule drive rather than looking on my laptop hd -- it doesn't really matter that it's a Time Capsule, just that it's an external (network, not usb or firewire) storage device.
Why: to be able to delete the library from my laptop hd, which is starting to fill up. I don't really need to carry around all my music on my laptop, after all, that's what the ipod is for. I still have a working itunes library, I'm not trying to fix something that's broken (yet!), just trying to free up space on my laptop hd for other things.
    Questions:
    1. I see lots of threads with people having trouble accessing external hd's. Is there a preferred way to do this so that I don't screw it up?
    2. I already have backed up my whole itunes folder to the Time Machine, just copied the files using my file copy utility. I'd just as soon not have to copy it all again to use it as my itunes library (instead of just as a backup) -- can I just tell itunes to look there rather than looking on my c: drive, or will that mess w/ my backup? Is the backup already usable as the main library, or do I have to recreate it somehow, and how?
    3. Ongoing backup: I would plan to backup the Time Machine itunes library to another external hd (usb), so I still have a backup...again, the whole thing would then be off my laptop hd.
    4. Other advice?
    Thanks!

Hello Styles36. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Can anyone give me a step-by-step assist on how to transfer and compress my dvd library to my time capsule using something other than Handbrake (will not recognize my 32 bit VLC) or Mac the Ripper.
Other than copy files to the Time Capsule (TC), your questions are really not related to AirPort Networking or Apple-specific software so you may find better results in getting a step-by-step for using either Handbrake or Mac the Ripper in one of their forums. Note: There are a number of beta 64-bit versions of VLC floating around on the Internet. Just do an Internet search and you will find them. Most folks stick to the 32-bit versions of both programs for reliability.
As far as copying the DVD Library, since these are large files, you will find that you will want to connect your MacBook Pro directly, by Ethernet, to the TC. Copying would be as simple as using the Finder. The TC's drive will show up in the Shared section.

  • Move iTunes Library to Time Capsule

A while back, and against Apple Support's advice, I moved my iTunes library from my MacBook Pro to a networked WD 2TB hard drive connected to my LinkSys E4200 via USB 2.0. I have read that USB protocol transfers in bursts, and is not adequate to house the library and to facilitate syncing of our iPhone 5C, 5S, and iPad Mini. Every time we sync our devices, we get an error message that X number of songs were unable to sync. It has made it virtually impossible to listen to iTunes on the computer as well.
I will be getting a 2TB Time Capsule for Christmas, and wanted to know if I can use it like a networked hard drive to store my iTunes Media Library as well as Time Machine backups. I would also like to know what the steps would be to transfer my current library from my networked drive to the time capsule and how best to back up that directory seeing as the Time Capsule version will be the only one. The difficulty I see lies in that it will require having two networks up at the same time, unless I can connect directly to the old hard drive via USB, move the files to the Time Capsule, and then tell iTunes where they are.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Thank you for the feedback. I've decided to go with the same setup. I figured the external drive would not be backed up to the TC, but that's ok. (Too bad it can't, though)
I'm in the process of transferring my media files over to the drive. It takes several hours. The first time I tried, it actually hit some error in the middle and just stopped...so only about half of my music got copied. I cleared it out and am starting over. We'll see how it goes.
I've read on some threads that people have recommended moving the entire iTunes folder over manually, as opposed to just moving the media location through iTunes preferences. I chose to do the latter. So, if I take my laptop away from home, I should still be able to open up and view the itunes library, even if the source files aren't available to be played. I'm curious if/how iTunes Match would work in that scenario? I guess I will try it and see...
    Thanks again
