ITunes for Lin

I would like to see iTunes for Linux. Many, many people would love to see this as well, and will make you money.

Paul,
I just don't believe that the development costs are so prohibitive on this project. There have got to be other reasons.
Fine. I don;t really care if you agree with me or not. Dave was the one to make the origional calim anway. I agree with him.
I respectfully disagree with your comparisons to Microsoft products. In all Microsoft cases, the profit is either from the sale of the software itself, or from making sure people run the software on Windows. With iTunes, the point is for people to buy music. It does not (or should not) matter whether the user is on Windows, MAC OS, or Linux.
That doesn't address my question. Why wouldn't Microsoft want to increase the sales of its products by making Linux versions. I specifically brought up Medial player since it is a free product designed to sell music. You will never see that on Linux either.
Whatever the production costs, it will be earned back from music purchases. Personally, I wouldn't mind if Apple charged me a small fee to purchase iTunes for Linux, if that helped offset development costs.
After how long? Dave already mentioned that this assumes that tons of Linux users will buy tons of songs. There is no evidence that theis will happen at all. It could take years to make up the development costs. No board wants to wait that long.
By the way, I say all this out of respect for Apple. I like iTunes, and would like to see it remain the strongest music source. I just think this is one of those things where we look back in 10 years time and people say, "Apple lost an opportunity there."
You assume the opportunity was there to begin with. Apple has not ignored Linux users. They just cannot justify accommodating a platform that has no proven future.
The fact is, the Linux community is growing. Every day, an accelerating number of people make the decision to at least dual-boot into Linux, or to replace Windows with Linux.
Can you show a cite that this is actually happening? On the desktop side and not server side. I honestly would like to see what the market share that is not based on guesswork.
As a fan of Apple, give that some thought.
Thats fine. I am not saying that you are not. I am saying that you just have to see the reality of the matter and you are not. Apple is aware of Linux. They just don;t want to do anything with it.

  • ITunes for Windows freezes when importing a library. I have a large but not huge library of mostly iTunes purchased music on two authorized computers and would like to sync the files, export the library as a playlist, and import it on the other computer.

I am running iTunes for Windows 10.2.2 on Windows 7 Home. I have my iTunes library on both this computer and another authorized machine running Windows 7 Professional. I have a large but not enormous library, as I'm one of those people who doesn't pirate, use torrents, borrow from a dozen friends, or whatever other shades of gray you might imagine. It's mostly iTunes purchases with my old CD collection imported. I have started using the following technique to sync my libraries between my two authorized computers, an ability which you can probably all agree should one day be added to iTunes -- that would be different from Home Sharing, because the music would be stored locally and thus available on the road. With the added benefit of the entire library being backed up on the other machine in real-time. Anyway, when I switch from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, I use the following technique:
Connect both machines to the home network. One machine is the "Active" machine, which has most recently been used for iTunes media, purchases, ratings, etc.
On the "Active" machine, File-->Library-->Export. Save the file as "Library.xml" on the shared drive of the other machine.
Right-click "Library.xml" where it's been saved, and open another file that has two lines in it: The root path of the iTunes library on one machine and the root path of the iTunes library on the other machine.
Do a find/replace all in Notepad to make the library XML file point to where the files will be saved on the "Inactive" machine.
Run Microsoft SyncToy to synchronize the files between both music libraries; the most recent files win. This avoids copying the entire multi-gigabyte library over the network.
Open iTunes on the "Inactive" machine.
Go to Music, Select All, Delete. Keep files.
Do the same for Movies, Music Videos.
Go down to Playlists, select the top one, hold down the delete button until they're all gone.
File-->Library-->Import Playlist. Choose the "Library.xml" file you saved.
First a status bar comes up that says, "Importing library." It has the continually-scrolling progress bar, not the one that starts on the left and steadily creeps right. Then after about 30 seconds, that clears out. Wait. Typically a few minutes. Eventually a status bar will pop up saying something like, "Evaluating gapless playback information," or something like that.
The "Inactive" computer is now the "Active" computer. I can now play my library, it has all my playlists and metadata from the other machine.
Delete all the duplicate playlists named "Music," "Genius," "Purchased," and "iTunes DJ."
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 10.2.2 a few days ago and tried to do this again like I've done it dozens of times before. Now, iTunes just goes unresponsive after the library import. It got through the "Importing library" bar to the long wait and stopped. I can still multiprocess and use other programs, but iTunes is hovering back there not responding to clicks. Task Manager doesn't seem to think iTunes is using my CPU, and I don't see my hard drive rattling. Any thoughts on why iTunes might hang up when importing a large library?
... Also, please help lobby Apple to come up with a network sync tool built into iTunes for a user with multiple authorized computers. Something different than Home Sharing so I can pull my laptop off the network and still have the synced library with me. And all my metadata changes will sync. The technique I use seems a little kludgey, don't you think?

iTunes isn't an editor. You need an app that's intended for editing audio files, like Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) or Audacity (free in the App Store).

  • Text in iPod section of iTunes for windows not totally showing up???

When my iPod/iPhone is connected and I browse different sections of iPod/iPhone are in iTunes for Windows, there are several lines of text instructions. Some of which don't display the entire sentence. This seems very odd since there is plenty of blank screen real estate available.
    For example:
In the Summary Section (with iPod/iPhone connected), I see 2 lines of text under Version and 4 lines of text under Summary. None of the sentences can be seen complete.
In the Music section, under Sync, I see 1st line reading "Include music videos" but on the next line I only see "Include voice m..." and the following line I see "Automatically fill free space with songs". So why did the shorter sentence not display complete?
    Very odd.
    Dell laptop w/ Windows 7 HP 64.

Mine is a brand new machine. Burning software was installed before iTunes was installed. I am looking at this article which points to a possible problem with the GEAR drivers: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2308
It also points to the afs.sys and afs2k.sys drivers as a potential problem. I've verified that I don't have these drivers on my machine.
When I go to the GEAR site, it tells you to manually uninstall the GEAR drivers and install the latest ones. First, manual uninstall which involves editing the registry. Really? While I'm quite the expert at registry editing, NO CONSUMER should ever be told to edit the registry to delete anything. Second, if in fact the GEAR drivers are the problem, shouldn't iTunes install the right ones? This is a prime example of poor software engineering at its core.

  • Seamlessly switching between iTunes for Mac and Windows

The path on a Windows machine to my iTunes is something like N:\My Music, where N is mapped as a network drive. On a Mac, that same Drive N is mapped as “fireserver” on the server machine. So on iTunes for the Mac, it would have to be //servername/fireserver/My Music or something along those lines.
Here’s the problem. The iTunes Library.itl and iTunes Music Library.xml are the files in Windows that store the information regarding which iTunes music is there, as well as the playlists and their contents. Therefore, if I move from one machine to another, as long as each has the server’s drive mapped as N, I can copy those two files from one machine to the other and it serves two purposes. First, it is a backup of sorts of my iTunes library. Second, I don’t have to update the information on two computers but rather one, and then copy the files to have an identical library, including playlists.
I would like to sync my iPhone and iPod(s) with my Mac, but I have a Windows machine, and need to continue to use that Windows machine to do other things with iTunes, such as port music to the backyard of my house. I don’t know how to keep the two iTunes libraries in sync since the xml and itl files refer to files and folders within N:\My Music. Even if I laboriously edited those files and did a global replace, that would be a one shot deal, and thereafter, I would have to update on the Windows side and on the Mac side.
So here is the question. Is there a way that I can set up my Mac so that when I refer to N: it knows that I mean //servername/fireserver (I’m not sure if I have the syntax right, but I think I’m getting my point across)? In this way, the files would point to N:\whatever and the computer would know that I mean //servername/fireserver/whatever.
This would solve a major problem for me.
    Thanks in advance!

I have been really surprised by the lack of responses to this post. I'm thinking, this is such a typical thing that people would want to do - sharing their music with friends and family - I can't be the first to have the problem. Plus, I've always received such quick, expert advice on this forum to other questions since buying my Mac a couple of months ago.
But now I'm wondering whether there is something else going on that precludes the resident experts from answering. Is sharing music as I've described illegal? Maybe that's why everybody's keeping quiet, i.e., if you tell me how to share my songs with a friend then you're assisting in copyright infringement.
I didn't think it was illegal to share music with a friend in this way, as long as the songs you've downloaded from iTunes aren't shared on more than four devices or whatever. If it is illegal I'd sure like to know. That would also explain the radio silence.
    Thanks.

  • CC = itunes for Designers... No Thanks!

    CC, bad idea Adobe.
Adobe's opening gambit starts with flattery, for us designers.... "At Adobe, we believe our customers are some of the most influential people in the world."
You're right, we're also the most product savvy and design conscious consumers in the world... which is why we will never buy into a product as controlling and capitalist as CC.
CC is for our new 'mobile world'... what, so we can suckle on the cloud from our mobile devices? (A cloud that is potentially vunerable to hackers and DDoS attacks).
'Mobile devices' are platforms for CONSUMPTION NOT CREATION. You cannot design on a tablet or a phone! (even if the marketing vid does show some hipster who works from a coffee shop creating a colour swatch on his iphone) Just look at the tablet market.. itunes, and Windows8... computers in a straight jackets. Access to a built in shop, and limited functionality for file manipulation / creation.
The thing is.. it is far too easy to see already, how CC will become just another platform for consumption, A BIG SHOP ON YOUR DESKTOP.
CC is starting to look alot like itunes for creatives. It has the scope for a font shop, filter shop, a stock image/graphic shop and a 'Prosite Portfolio' to warm you into their own brand of online jobs market.
"Preview fonts in layout before you commit"... Sounds a lot like an IN APP PURCHASE TO ME!
I noticed noone else had commented on the 'consumerist shop platform' aspect' of CC, so there it is. The high price, requirement for an internet connection once a month, the security issues, the practicality of managing subscriptions have already been well covered... by the plethora of users who are either vowing to jump ship or roll with CS6 until Adobe does a U-turn.
Going by what I have read on the forums already... Adobe, you're flogging a dead horse, and it'll never work because that's what we do for a living!
Roll it in glitter all you want, CC is just another datacapturing, desktop shop with inapp purchases. I wouldn't be surprised if CC came with unlockable 'achievements'.
    **Online Rant Achievement Unlocked**
    + 5000 CCredits

I'm no lawyer but, it looks like CC is geared up for all sorts of user datacapture and in app advertising. Especially when you blur the line between what is online, what is an app and how these services and tools interact in a cloud platform like CC.  I sit infront of CS for 8 hours a day. Call me paranoid, or a conspiracist but the idea of the professional tool I use everyday turning into an itunes really makes we want to pull the plug and install Corel Draw and Quark.
"Adobe websites and applications may include buttons, tools, or content that link to other companies’ services (for example, a Facebook "Like" button). We may collect information about your use of these features. In addition, when you see or interact with these buttons, tools, or content, or view an Adobe web page containing them, some information from your browser may automatically be sent to the other company."
"Adobe advertises online in a variety of ways, including displaying Adobe ads to you across the Internet on websites and in apps. We collect information about which ads are displayed, which ads are clicked on, and on which web page the ad was displayed"
"We collect information about how you use our websites and applications, including when you use a desktop product feature that takes you online (such as a photo syncing feature). **[such as CC, which must sync across the net at least once a month]** We may collect information that your browser or device typically sends to our servers whenever you visit an Adobe website, or when an Adobe desktop product feature takes you online. For example, your browser or device may tell us your IP address (which may tell us generally where you are located) and the type of browser and device you used"

  • Use iTunes for internet radio - settings question

    Hi all,
I have a Linn Klimax DS (digital streaming) unit as part of an audio system, and that's being fed over my Cat5 network by a Twonky MediaServer installed on one of my mac's. That Twonky setup has SHOUTcast enabled and was serving internet radio fine and identified the stations until I installed iTunes 8 yesterday. I made the mistake of clicking on the button that says 'Use iTunes for Internet radio' in the preferences-> advanced->general pane.
Basically, I need to find out what precisely that setting actually does under the hood, so I can use the command line to reset that, turn it off, or undo basically what it did set.
Hope someone can shed a bit of light on that, maybe even just a hint, as I have been through the console logs, but haven't seen anything that jumps out at me. Thanks in advance for any help.
    Chris

    It's in Preferences>Advanced>General.
    Hope this helps.

  • I've had iTunes for a while. Now, whenever I click on the icon to open it, it just doesn't open. What's the problem? Why won't it download?

I've used iTunes for a while on my PC. The icon is on the desk top, but in the past few days, I can't get it to come up. I also can't seem to find a sign-in link on the main iTunes website. Any suggestions? I wanna listen to the music I've purchased!!

When something that used to work stops doing so, the most likely culprit is corrupt preferences. So that's the easiest first troubleshooting step. Go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences, delete the com.apple.iwork.pages.plist file & then restart Pages. In Finder, hold down the Option key while clicking on the Go menu & your user Library will appear about halfway down the list. Or you can choose Go to Folder from the Go menu in Finder & paste this line in the box:
    ~/Library/Preferences
Did you install Pages by copying it from another drive? The iWork apps don't do that well at all. The Mac App Store will report an application as installed if it is on any connected drive, not just the start up drive.
If deleting the plist doesn't fix the problem you will have to delete the existing Pages & reinstall. The files to delete are the iWork ’09 folder from the main HD > Applications; the iWork ’09 folder in HD > Library > Application Support & the individual iWork application plist files found in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences for each user. The easiest way to fix the problem is to use Yvan Koenig's AppleScript that removes the files. Yvan's box.com account often is out of bandwith. I have put a copy on my Box.com account in the iWork folder. Download uninstall iWork '09.zip, decompress it, open it in AppleScript Editor and click the Run button.

  • Interesting how this thread when put on an RSS feed now states that there were no articles posted re: iTunes for Mac; what's that called...spin control?

I know for a FACT that lots of people including myself were trying to figure out yesterday what's wrong with itunes 11.0.3. I see many, many unanswered questions re: iTunes for Mac updated to 11.0.3 w/subsequent problems. The bottom line must be... Cupertino: We have issued another lemon of an update and we don't have answers for our customers who don't like the taste of the kool-aid we're serving.

Actually, only yesterday has been whitewashed; you can click on RSS feed & access Monday... So I stand corrected. No Wait!
Cool, I solved my own question or did I? I see a Green Star indicating that I solved my question, (although I didn't) but I don't get any points?
Only people with points can get points.
What if you give a wrong answer? Why don't they subtract points?

  • HT5848 Have downloaded iTunes Radio in my iPhone. I want to know the data plan consumption for playing iTunes for an hour straight.

    Hi,
Somebody kindly help me to understand the usage of 3G data plan while playing iTunes Radio for an hour continuously.

First, there is no "iTunes support line". The iTunes Store does not have phone support, and unlesst things have changed very recently, the normal Apple tech support lines cannot help with iTunes Store issues.
Anyway, what do you mean by "won't let you"? Have you followed the procedure outlined in this support article?

Help! I've deleted my voice memos playlist on iTunes. How do I transfer my voice memos on my iPhone to iTunes for a second time?

You need to have the latest version of iTunes on the computer, version 11.1.3 to be able to handle syncing a newer phone with iOS 7. The iTunes on the iPhone has nothing to do with syncing and is installed by the iOS.
Go to iTunes on the computer, click on Help, Check for updates to update iTunes on the computer, or go to to www.apple.com/itunes/download and download and install the latest version of iTunes to correct your problem.
