Itunes for Linux OS

How to install itunes for Linux OS ??

Some people have reported at least partial success using one of the Windows emulators such as WINE, so you might try that. There is no native version of iTunes for Linux and no indications from Apple that they have any plans for one.

There is no release of iTunes for Linux, hence there is no support community.  Certainly your question is not appropriate for the iTunes Match forum.

  • When you will make iTunes for Linux?

We are need iTunes for Linux OS!

These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple (there are too many forums/threads/messages for that to happen). If you want to leave feedback for Apple then you can do so here : http://www.apple.com/feedback - but the market share for Linux is very small so it's probably not going to happen any time soon (if at all)

  • Develop iTunes for Linux?

Why doesn´t Apple build iTunes for Linux? I know alot of people that dont buy the Apple products just because there is no iTunes for Linux, so they buy Android instead.
    Plz Apple give me answer...

    Hhhmmm!
I'm not quite sure what you're trying to say here, but it certainly reads as though you believe my job is less important than someone who has had a college education in computer science. And that's without you even knowing what my education or occupation is.
This is a forum for people who use Apple products, not for computer geeks. For that, look elsewhere.

That's for Apple to decide though, isn't it?
No, truthfully that is a fact.
No, it is for Apple to decide and most certainly, not you.
Take careful note of my comment above: this is a forum for people who use Apple products. If you feel the need to knock Apple and its business decisions, there are far better places to vent your feelings than here.
Obviously anyone who comes to this site USES apple products, dont back such a product that can only do a few things and claims to do everything, just use it. Also a buisness such as apple has the right to decide but a good buisness would build it on every platform for obvious reasons.
Lastly, just because linux isnt your cup of tea, dosent mean you should try and knock something you dont know. you are the one who looks foolish, but wait, you have all the uneducated people who will support you...so feel good. (be thankful for linux people, they are the ones who drive prices DOWN. but i guess you always like paying 10.99 for a app that suggests what color socks to wear).

  • Why isn't there an iTunes for Linux?

There is no iTunes for Linux. And all I have on my computer is Linux. Can Apple not make iTunes for Linux, or is there a security issue, or something? I want to know.

    capablancauk,
Yes, you are correct. Both OSX and the Linux kernel are built on UNIX. I've only used a Mac once, and it was to install an Apache webserver with MySQL and PHP. Knowing Linux made it easy. OSX is the dummy's version of Linux. That being said, every OS requires specific program hooks, drivers, etc. in order to function properly.
Could it be about digital rights? I don't know.
But the truth is, Linux is a full-featured, secure (who needs antivirus?), cutting-edge OS with enormous power. I use it every day for software development, and a Mac would only slow me down.
Although, I have no doubt that the reason both Microsoft and Apple oppose Linux is pretty obvious. $$$$$

  • How about Itunes for Linux?

Please can someone tell me when a version for Linux will be released? With Microsoft making a total mess of Windows, we have been installing many Ubuntu Linux clients but they are complaining that there is no Apple support within Linux. There is not even an Apple-Linux community forum to which The growing number of Linux users can turn. So What is the story here chaps? When will the ITunes client be ported to Linux?
    JB

I don't believe Apple will ever release a version for Linux.
However you could consider CrossOver for Linux and then running iTunes for Windows via that. This is from Apple's point of view probably not allowed but as iTunes is 'free'...

  • ITunes for Linux?

Can iTunes and the iTunes store be used by other operating systems besides Windoze and MacOS like Linux?
    THanks

Been there, done that! And when I complained about their incompetance to make spare parts for their hand held products (iphones, ipods), I got a reply, but now when I emailed them because I can't find a version of itunes that runs on linux at their website, I got no answer.
They can't say that it is too hard or too time consuming, just because you should really just compile it for another unix kernel and write the libraries that it needs, or just use the existing ones. MacOS even uses X, so you should just make two skins for them in gtk and one for KDE.
This would increase the sales of the new iphones and ipods, because there are so many people willing to buy them, but they don't want to buy something they can't sync with their existing software. They'd rather go with a nokia, which syncs pretty well with linux. And, as far as I know, there are more people using linux as their home OS, than there are using MacOS.
But even still, you haven't ported it yet, even if that would/is be profitable. I've heard that when you people at apple had some financial difficulties, some particular Bill offered you an offer you couldn't resist. Many people think that's why you now use intel's processors, just because this particular Bill isn't friends with IBM. That actually makes me more willing not to buy you're hardware, because now I am paying for something extra just to run an OS, that I have to pay for exclusively. When you had the ppcs, I felt different, just because then I would have a ppc, rather than an x86, and that would make me feel different. Now I pay for the design and the exclusive compatibility, which *****.
Looks like the iphone is going to be the last product of apple I'll ever buy from you greedy suck-up people, unless you port it to linux and stop kissing the particular bill's butt.
I apologize for my bad english and my rudeness, it kind of gets on my nerve, when I see the particular bill trying to dominate the computer/os market.
    LONG LIVE LINUX!!!

  • When is iTunes going to be avalible for Linux?

Hi. I wanted to know if iTunes is or will be supported on Linux. iTunes not being available on Linux is the only reason why I haven't switched. If you need to know specifically what Linux OS I want iTunes to be supported on it is Ubuntu.

Apple have made no announcements that I am aware of, and as fellow users nobody here knows about their plans. However it might be worth considering that the past might be some indication of the future. As long as Linux is a minority operating system it is unlikely to get its own native version of iTunes.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usage_share_of_operating_systems
However it appears to be possible to run iTunes using a Windows emulator.

  • ITUNES with linux

    Hello there,
i use a macbook pro and, of course, my ipod and my music (downloaded by itunes), work very well
but i have also a desktop computer with 5.1 sound system but the problem is, this computer uses SUSE linux, is there a way to use my downloaded itunes music on my linux computer? exists a ITUNES for linux? or is there a plugin for the linux players like AMAROK???
    thanks for your help
    greetings from germany

You can play the music if you remove the DRM first, but I am not going to go into detail on that because you are not supposed to remove the DRM. Do some googling and you will find the answer

  • ITunes for Lin

I would like to see iTunes for Linux. Many, many people would love to see this as well, and will make you money.

    Paul,
I just don't believe that the development costs are so prohibitive on this project. There have got to be other reasons.
Fine. I don;t really care if you agree with me or not. Dave was the one to make the origional calim anway. I agree with him.
I respectfully disagree with your comparisons to Microsoft products. In all Microsoft cases, the profit is either from the sale of the software itself, or from making sure people run the software on Windows. With iTunes, the point is for people to buy music. It does not (or should not) matter whether the user is on Windows, MAC OS, or Linux.
That doesn't address my question. Why wouldn't Microsoft want to increase the sales of its products by making Linux versions. I specifically brought up Medial player since it is a free product designed to sell music. You will never see that on Linux either.
Whatever the production costs, it will be earned back from music purchases. Personally, I wouldn't mind if Apple charged me a small fee to purchase iTunes for Linux, if that helped offset development costs.
After how long? Dave already mentioned that this assumes that tons of Linux users will buy tons of songs. There is no evidence that theis will happen at all. It could take years to make up the development costs. No board wants to wait that long.
By the way, I say all this out of respect for Apple. I like iTunes, and would like to see it remain the strongest music source. I just think this is one of those things where we look back in 10 years time and people say, "Apple lost an opportunity there."
You assume the opportunity was there to begin with. Apple has not ignored Linux users. They just cannot justify accommodating a platform that has no proven future.
The fact is, the Linux community is growing. Every day, an accelerating number of people make the decision to at least dual-boot into Linux, or to replace Windows with Linux.
Can you show a cite that this is actually happening? On the desktop side and not server side. I honestly would like to see what the market share that is not based on guesswork.
As a fan of Apple, give that some thought.
Thats fine. I am not saying that you are not. I am saying that you just have to see the reality of the matter and you are not. Apple is aware of Linux. They just don;t want to do anything with it.

  • Is there a chance that Itunes could be written for linux support?

is there a chance that Itunes could be written for linux support?
i use fedora from RedHat and woul like to be able to use itunes on it

Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your point of view), this is a user to user forum and no one here knows what Apple's plans for the future might be. Apple discourages us from speculating about such matters.
If I were to speculate about why they don't want us speculating, it's probably because, among other things, it would just end up encouraging a lot of semi-informed opinions (i.e. speculation).
But again, I'm just speculating so please don't quote me on that.
If you'd like to make your opinion known to Apple, submit the form at the bottom of this page:

  • Why Apple does not offer support for linux?

We all know the history of Apple. It clearly shows a trend to be open source, excepting for the licenses they share with Microsoft. In my personal case, I love open source because it has solved several of my problems. Just to share this with everyone, I am the network manager of a educational institution and I used to have my servers running on windows platform. Since we used to buy it all from Microsoft, they would give us free software for or labs, software like Visual Studio. They even assigned us engineers to plan everything for our servers, free of cost. Guess what? It was a disaster. We had our database destroyed by an external attack. We were “lucky” to have Microsoft in our servers and in our firewalls.
We had to take action, so I decided to switch to Debian, and to use IPCOP (a great dedicated firewall, if there is anyone interested, the link is: http://ipcop.org/ , please note, I am NOT affiliated with them, and I will receive no compensation or benefit if you chose to access it or not ). Both open source. The result, no external attack has been able to pass trough. After that, we switched most* of our e-learning platforms to open source, and guess what? We are saving over 60,000 yearly just in software. So for those who are looking for a good way to get good security without loosing an eye, try open source.
Now back to the point, I do not fully support any operative system. They all have their good features, or at least they should. The ones I know, are because I use them. My home network is composed by computers running in five different versions of Linux, two running in Mac OS X Tiger, and some others running in XP pro. My main computer is running in Ubuntu, and is really sad to see that there is no software from apple available for Linux. That is honestly the worst part of Linux, having no iTunes or QuickTime available. No way to see multimedia in the web, etc. A suggestion for apple would be, give support for Linux, there are a lot of us wanting the same.

Apple makes software and hardware. Therefore they
offer a total solution. Now they even can have
windows xp running on their hardware. Making a
version of mac os to run on linix isn't practically.
Under a mac is unix and you can run unix software
with the mac so you could do ever thing you are
    doing with a mac.
I did not know Linux was one type of computer, like Mac...
Next topic, If I was willing to pay for it, this thread would not exist, because I can actually use a commercial software to adapt the windows web plug ins to Linux... If I was in charge of Apple, I would propose to develop free software support of my products, - plug ins and so - to other operative systems... But of course, even if I did, it would not be up to me. It would have to pass trough several layers of bureaucracy, and it would take a lot of time to be approved or rejected.
Anyway, the main issue is, the three most important OS's are Windows, Linux, and Mac. And that can't be denied. Now you can even run Windows in a Mac PC, and vice versa... besides being fancy, what else could I do with a Mac PC using Windows, when I can build a machine able to run Windows for less than 300 bucks? OK if you want to try a Mac in a i386 or a x86... but I still rather to be the proud owner of a PowerMac G5 than the owner of a Pentium 4 / AMD using Mac OS.
Also, I thought it would be fun to see the reactions and opinions of other people with this topic, hence, I was not expecting anyone from Mac to read it, and really do something about it, because I know they won't.
