ITunes for Windows services

I just downloaded the latest version of iTunes. As usual with iTunes, there is another service that starts with the program. This one is for the iPhone.
Now, as I do not have an iPhone, nor is one in the immediate future, there is no reason for this service to be running.
There is no service listed when I look using msconfig. When I go into my registry and delete the key, the system works fine, but it reappears on the next reboot.
How can I get rid of this unneeded service?

Hello Clage,
The following article provides steps that can help get the Apple Mobile Device service sorted.

Initially iTunes would not run although it had been running quite well up until now. Suddenly received this error on PC start-up "The program can't start because MSVC80.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem." Research on Net pointed me to iTunes as the issue. Tried to start iTunes and received that message again. Tried installing latest version of 64-bit iTunes and received the subject message part way through the install: Trying to install latest iTunes for Windows 7 64-bit. iTunes has been running great on this PC for years. What's up?

  • Unable to Burn CDs in iTunes for Windows: (Will not fit, but it should.)

I am attempting to fix an issue with a friend's iTunes for Windows. Although previously this computer using this media was able to burn audio CDs through iTunes, recently, an error has appeared before any burn. When loading the proper amount of time to fit on a CD, iTunes claims:

"Do you want to create multiple Audio CDs with this playlist split across them?"
"This will require more than one CD to complete."

  • My iTunes for windows no longer automatically syncs my iPhone when started

I used to be able to do a daily backup of my iPhone by simply plugging into my computer.  iTunes would automatically start and do the sync.  That suddenly stopped under version 10.6.0.40.  The iPhone is recognized and I can manually sync it, just not automatically.  This is iTunes for windows. Any suggestions?

  • HT1926 Problem Installing iTunes for Windows 7

I get the message "Service 'Apple Mobile Device' failed to start when trying to instal. 'Verify you have sufficient priviledges to stsrt system.
Options given are Abort, Retry or Ignore.
Both Retry or Ignore give error message 'iTunes was not installed correctly. Error 7 (Windows error 14001).
    iTunes will not open.
    Please help !

    Hello Paul,
Sorry to hear that iTunes is not installing on your computer.  I found a couple of articles I think may help with the error messages you are seeing.
I recommend starting with these steps:
Remove and reinstall iTunes and AMDS
If the issue continues after restarting AMDS, then you'll need to remove and reinstall AMDS and iTunes.
Completely uninstall AMDS, iTunes, and all Apple software. Click the appropriate links below for steps:
    Windows XP
    Windows Vista or Windows 7
    Restart the computer.
Download and install (or reinstall) the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes. Installing iTunes will also install AMDS.
    Restart the computer.
Start iTunes and connect the device. It should be recognized properly in Windows.
You can find the full article here:
How to restart the Apple Mobile Device Service (AMDS) on Windows

If you are still getting "Error 7" when trying to do this, I recommend following the steps in this article:

  • Solution: iTunes for Windows installation interrupted

    Hi everyone.
    From my experience...
If you are running Windows XP Professional and have updated to Service Pack 2, you will not be able to install iTunes+QuickTime.
You will need to un-install Service Pack 2 and then install iTunes+QuickTime. You can then re-install Service Pack 2, but keep in mind that if you try to update iTunes+QuickTime, you will need to un-install SP2 again.
This is if you can't install or update and are receiving a message reading:
"The iTunes for Windows installer has completed.
The installation was interrupted before iTunes could be completely installed.
The System has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, run the installation again.
Click Finish to exit the wizard."
    Good luck!

Something is clearly horked up regarding SP2.
    Try re-applying SP2.

  • Error message: Host process for windows services stopped

I recently had to install a new hard drive into my laptop. I am running windows vista and have installed all updated drivers. After installing itunes and uploading my backed up library, I went to play a song and I got the error "host process for windows services stopped working and was closed." Movies play fine. I have searched but have not found anything. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Q I just upgraded to a new mobo and CPU, the EVGA X58 SLi and i7 920, and this issue still persists! That means it is either the sound card or Steam. The drivers on the CD have no issues, only the newer ones do. So by deduction there is something wrong with the new drivers, but I need them to not BSOD in OpenAL!

  • Will Apple release ITunes for Windows XP 64bit?

Will Apple release ITunes for Windows XP 64bit?

WARNING: This procedure involves moving, deleting, modifying, and copying system files and possibly sytem registry entries. If you make a mistake you can kill your system [I killed two of mine until I
figured out the problem with the outdated GEAR drivers]therefore:
1)Back up your entire system or better yet, get a cheapie new HD like Western digital 2 TB for $69-129 depending whether on sale or not and reinstall your system from scratch on the new drive. If
computer kraps out you just put the old drive back in.
    2) Some of the procedures here may not be exactly what YOU see on YOUR specific model of computer. I've tried it on a COMPAQ sr1610nx with xp64, I've tried it on a Dell Alien with xp64, and on a
Gateway GM5442, and will now try from scratch to format harddrive, load xp64, device drivers, OS service packs and patches, AVG free, flash, java, and itunes.
    3) I wrote these instructions down from memory. Read and understand entire procedure before you start. There is some troubleshooting you may need to do to make it work on your particular system. This
procedure works on 3 different models of 64 bit cpus. One CPU is an INTEL(Gateway), one CPU is an AMD X2 64-bit 4800+ Toledo(Compaq sr1610ns), and the other is an AMD x2 64-bit 3500+(DELL Alien). This
shows the capability exists on both Intel and AMD x64 architectures.
    4) The current version 10.6.3 will work with modifications(including syncing ipod with ios5 and syncing cd and dvdrom ).
PROCEDURE: 1)Using you IE 64-bit browser download iTunes64Setup.exe from URL http://www.apple.com/iTunes/download/ to a new directory (For Example: ITUNES-1063-XPX64-TEST).
    2) Using you IE 64-Bit browser download GEAR Drivers at URL http://www.gearsoftware.com/downloads.php?dir=updates/windows/drivers/&file=Driv er_Installer_x86_x64.exe.
3)Using your IE 64 browser download ORCA Editor at URL http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=Orca&tag=404&searchtype=download s .
    4) Using your IE 64 browser download 7-Zip at URL http://download.cnet.com/1770-20_4-0.html?query=7-Zip&platformSelect=&tag=srch&s
    earchtype=downloads&filterName=platform%3DWindows%2CMac%2CiOS%2CAndroid%2CWebwar e%2CMobile&filter=platform%3DWindows%2CMac%2CiOS%2CAndroid%2CWebware%2CMobile .
5)Use 7-Zip to extract Itunes64Setup.exe into sub components.
6)Use Orca to open and edit iTunes64.msi.
    7)Change Launch Condition from VersionNT64>=600 to VersionNT64>=501. Change ((VersionNT=501 AND ServicePackLevel>=2) OR VersionNT>501) to ((VersionNT=501 AND ServicePackLevel>=2) OR VersionNT>=501)
    8) Save and exit iTunes64.msi.
    9) Use Orca to open and edit AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi.
    10) Change Launch Condition from (VersionNT=501 And ServicePackLevel>=2) Or VersionNT>=600 to (VersionNT=501 And ServicePackLevel>=2) Or VersionNT>=501
    11) Save and exit AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi.
    12) Use Orca to open and edit AppleApplicationSupport64.msi.
    13) Change Launch Condition from (VersionNT>=501 AND ServicePackLevel>=2) OR VersionNT>501 to (VersionNT>=501 AND ServicePackLevel>=2) OR VersionNT>=501
    14) Save and exit AppleApplicationSupport64.msi.
    15) Use Orca to open and edit Bonjour64.msi.
    16) Change Launch Condition from (VersionNT>=501 AND ServicePackLevel>=2) OR VersionNT>501 to (VersionNT>=501 AND ServicePackLevel>=2) OR VersionNT>=501
    18) Install itunes64.
    19) Shutdown and Reboot.
    20) Search your PC for GEAR*.*
    21) Delete all the files found that are deleteable. This will get rid of the bogus Gear drivers (Version 2.2.0.1 from 2008 and 2009) that iTunes installs.
    22) Run Gear drivers installer you downloaded earlier. This will load the correct Gear drivers (Version 2.2.2.0 [or 2.02.02.00- depending where you look in windows for the version number] from 2011 and
2012 drivers versus defective 2008 and 2009 drivers). The Gear driver connects the cdrom to itunes for sync. The usbappl driver connects the iPod to itunes for sync (Via the USB).
    23) Ensure the file GEARAspiWDM.sys, usbaapl64.sys, also ksthunk.sys is in C:\Windows\system32\Drivers. If not search and locate these files. Then copy them to the correct directories Remember to set
your More advanced options to Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and search subfolders.
    24) Now you must verify registry entry for UpperFilters exists and has GEARAspiWDM for value.
    25) Go to Start, then Run, then enter regedit, then OK. Select HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, then SYSTEM, then CurrentControlSet, then Control, then Class, then {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}, then
UpperFilters, right mouse click and select modify, then verify the Value data has the entry GEARAspiWDM. If not go back to {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} and right mouse click select new, then
Multi-String Value, then name it UpperFilters, right mouse click and select modify and enter GEARAspiWDM for Value data, select OK and close registry.
    26) Shutdown and reboot.
    27) Now you need to update the cdrom/dvd driver and the USB driver.
    28) Go to Start, then Control Panel, then System, then Hardware, then Device Manager, select DVD/CD-ROM drives, select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install, then select Next, ensure Show
compatible hardware is checked. Select CD-ROM as the driver, then Next, then Finish.
    29) Shutdown and reboot.
    30) Start computer, plug in iPod to USB, wait for windows to detect the device, probably detected as a camera. Go to Control Panel, then System, then Hardware, then Device Manager, and find the iPod.
    31) Right mouse click and select Properties, then Driver.
    32) Select Update Driver, then select Install from a specific location (Advanced), then Next, then select Don't search, I will choose the driver to install, then select Next, ensure Show compatible
hardware box is checked, select USB driver for iPod, then Next, then Finish.
    33) Shutdown and Reboot.
    34) Start iTunes. Ignore the message iTunes was not properly installed. If you wish to import or burn CDs you need to reinstall iTUnes (This message comes from the device driver install failure for the
cdroms because the current Itunes installer still contains the bogus outdated Gear drivers). Select OK.
    35) Now Itunes should work.

  • ITunes for Windows freezes when importing a library. I have a large but not huge library of mostly iTunes purchased music on two authorized computers and would like to sync the files, export the library as a playlist, and import it on the other computer.

I am running iTunes for Windows 10.2.2 on Windows 7 Home. I have my iTunes library on both this computer and another authorized machine running Windows 7 Professional. I have a large but not enormous library, as I'm one of those people who doesn't pirate, use torrents, borrow from a dozen friends, or whatever other shades of gray you might imagine. It's mostly iTunes purchases with my old CD collection imported. I have started using the following technique to sync my libraries between my two authorized computers, an ability which you can probably all agree should one day be added to iTunes -- that would be different from Home Sharing, because the music would be stored locally and thus available on the road. With the added benefit of the entire library being backed up on the other machine in real-time. Anyway, when I switch from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, I use the following technique:
Connect both machines to the home network. One machine is the "Active" machine, which has most recently been used for iTunes media, purchases, ratings, etc.
On the "Active" machine, File-->Library-->Export. Save the file as "Library.xml" on the shared drive of the other machine.
Right-click "Library.xml" where it's been saved, and open another file that has two lines in it: The root path of the iTunes library on one machine and the root path of the iTunes library on the other machine.
Do a find/replace all in Notepad to make the library XML file point to where the files will be saved on the "Inactive" machine.
Run Microsoft SyncToy to synchronize the files between both music libraries; the most recent files win. This avoids copying the entire multi-gigabyte library over the network.
Open iTunes on the "Inactive" machine.
Go to Music, Select All, Delete. Keep files.
Do the same for Movies, Music Videos.
Go down to Playlists, select the top one, hold down the delete button until they're all gone.
File-->Library-->Import Playlist. Choose the "Library.xml" file you saved.
First a status bar comes up that says, "Importing library." It has the continually-scrolling progress bar, not the one that starts on the left and steadily creeps right. Then after about 30 seconds, that clears out. Wait. Typically a few minutes. Eventually a status bar will pop up saying something like, "Evaluating gapless playback information," or something like that.
The "Inactive" computer is now the "Active" computer. I can now play my library, it has all my playlists and metadata from the other machine.
Delete all the duplicate playlists named "Music," "Genius," "Purchased," and "iTunes DJ."
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 10.2.2 a few days ago and tried to do this again like I've done it dozens of times before. Now, iTunes just goes unresponsive after the library import. It got through the "Importing library" bar to the long wait and stopped. I can still multiprocess and use other programs, but iTunes is hovering back there not responding to clicks. Task Manager doesn't seem to think iTunes is using my CPU, and I don't see my hard drive rattling. Any thoughts on why iTunes might hang up when importing a large library?
... Also, please help lobby Apple to come up with a network sync tool built into iTunes for a user with multiple authorized computers. Something different than Home Sharing so I can pull my laptop off the network and still have the synced library with me. And all my metadata changes will sync. The technique I use seems a little kludgey, don't you think?

iTunes isn't an editor. You need an app that's intended for editing audio files, like Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) or Audacity (free in the App Store).

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you've already tried a complete uninstall and reinstall try opening iTunes in safe mode (hold down CTRL+SHIFT as you start iTunes) then going to Edit > Preferences > Store and turning off Show iTunes in the Cloud purchases. You may find iTunes will now start normally.
