Itunes forgets position

This started a week ago. Itunes forgets the position all the time. I listen to a lot of long MP3s and pretty much every time I pause an MP3, when i unpause it, it is like 20 minutes earlier than it was when I paused it. I have installed the newest version and rebooted and it is still happening. Anyone else seeing this?

Here's a wrinkle: I still have iTunes 9 (9.2 or whatever the latest version is), not iTunes 10, and I had a similar problem today. Could this be related?
Having listened to a bunch of podcasts on my iPhone, I synced with my iBook, which put those same podcasts back on to my iPhone, showing as either unplayed or partially-played, depending on their status the LAST time I synced, which was probably 3 or more days ago. No new podcasts were added.
All the posts on here seem to be from the last week, so I wonder if this problem has to do not with iTunes 10, but with the iOS firmware. I know there was a recent firmware update that I installed on my iPhone 3G.
Well I've not got any iOS devices, just an 80GB iPod classic and second gen-shuffle. Yet this issue arose for me after updating to iTunes 10 shrug

  • How do I make iTunes forget my iPhone?

I set up my iPhone 5 as a new device (not restored from my old iPhone 4 backup) but when I initially connected it to iTunes, I neglected to un-check the box that said something like "Automatically sync apps to this device."
This resulted in iTunes trying to sync all 2000 apps in my library to my new phone. I don't seem to be able to uncheck them on masse, just one by one…2000 times in a row...
So, my current strategy is to somehow make iTunes forget that it already knows this iPhone, and then I can make the correct choice on the initial setup screen. (I unchecked that box with my wife's new iPhone and it worked well.)
But how do I do make iTunes forget my phone?
    I've deleted its backup from ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/
    I've removed it's listing from Preferences->Device Preferences
…but iTunes still recognizes the device when I connect. I want it to say, "Hey, an iPhone I've never seen before, what do you want me to do with it?"
Does anybody know how to do this?

  • ITunes forgets my CD files...how do I rebuild tune database? - Revisited

    Hi:
    I tried follwoing your advice.
I can do the Ctrl-A to select all songs in the iTunes libary.
I can right-click and select Delete,
but when I do, I do not get the 3 options that you mentioned
(Cancel, Keep Files, and Move To Recycle Bin)
I get a dialog box stating:
Are you sure you want to remove the selcted songs from your iTunes library?
These songs will also be remove from any iPod or iPhone which synchronizes with your iTunes library.
Why am I not getting the options you stated above ?
I have seen you oprions on a Mac at best Buy, but I am running an HP laptop under Vista Home Premium.
Then has a Remove or Cancel button to be clicked.
If I follow through with the above, will it wipe out my music library ?
How do I go about rebuilding the databse ?
    Thank you

Sorry DaleB, I have redone my library so many times, I forgot about this prompt. Just click 'yes'/'remove' to that question.
Reloading the library will only make your iPod resync again, thats all.

    Hi:
    A related issue.
I made a copy (backup ?) of the Music folder in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit OS, to my Desktop. If something corrupts the Music in iTunes, will this be a "good enough" backup to be able to restore the music by moving it back into the Music folder, or will soemthing be missing ?
    Thanx !

    Hi:
I did not move them arounsd outsice of iTunes.
I copied & pasetd them in iTunes, but in some cases, they became subfolders.
e.g., I may have a main folder in iTunes called "Rolling Stones", and subfolder iteled after their Greatest Hits album "Hot Rocks". Initially,
Hot Rocks was a folder at the same level as Rolling Stones. Thenm I create a subfolder within Rollng Stones and then copied and pasted all of the MP3 files from the main folder (Hot Rocks) into the subfolder (Hot Rocks), and then deleted the main folder (Hot Rocks). But, iTunes now tells me it can find the songs. The Apple guy at best Buy showed me how to delete the current database without deleting the actual tunes, and then rebuild the database, all in a few mouse clicks. But, this was on a Mac...I do not know if iTunes for Windows has the same menu features as the Mac version. I just forgot the steps that he went through.

  • ITunes forgets song locations.

I have an iBook with a terabyte Western Digital MyBook external hard drive attached via USB.
Frequently, nearly every time I run it, iTunes fails to find a random selection of songs. Usually around twenty or so out of 22,000. The songs show up in my library with a little exclamation mark. Trying to play the song throws an error, claiming that the song file cannot be found, and if I want to locate it. When I do, the song file is exactly where it is supposed to be, and where it has always been, and iTunes will happily play it.
But why do I randomly have to help iTunes locate songs, even though the files have not moved? What makes iTunes forget the file location? The affected songs are pretty much a random selection, and are different every time.
Is there any way I can prevent this? Is there an easier way to make iTunes rescan, other than manually clicking each lost song and browsing to the file location?
    -Ron.
PS. I noticed this with my previous 500Gb external drive also, so I doubt there is a malfunction in the drive. And it has been happening through several iTunes versions. Just downloaded latest, and it still does it.

This problem seems to shows up more and more frequently on this board. Noone has ever been able to explain it, and there aren't any pat solutions that I've read of.
I'm one of the unlucky ones who has experienced this problem. The one thing that made a significant difference in my case was making sure that I used "Create file names with track number" in iTunes Preferences/Advanced/Importing. Problems were much reduced after that. However, others who have always had that setting turned on have reported problems like yours.
It's also possible to confuse iTunes under the right (or wrong) circumstances by switching among multiple music folders and multiple iTunes Library files. However, I think many people who have reported the problem were just using a single iTunes library.
Is the iTunes Music folder location set to the folder that your songs are in? Just checking, and, in fact, the iTunes Music folder location doesn't have to be set to that location for the library to work properly. But in my experience, when iTunes gets confused, that setting does have an effect on where iTunes starts looking for files that it's missing.
Unfortunately, if the exclamation marks are persistent, I don't know of any shortcuts for reestablishing the connection between iTunes library entry and the song file.

  • ITunes Forgets that I Am Authorized

Simple: Every time I sync my iPod touch 2G, itunes makes me Reauthorize my computer in order to sync.
Detailed: I have iTunes on my Windows XP Dell computer, Everything works fine. Until i sync my iPod touch. When it tries to sync, it makes me Authorize for Purchases. It takes my username and password, and tells me i am already authorized. Then it begins to sync. If i try to ignore this dialog box that makes me authorize, it threatens to remove purchases from this ipod. It just seems like itunes "Forgets" thats my computer actually is authorized. Ive tried EVERYTHING. (Manually deauthorizing and reauthorizing, Etc.)
If you need more info, please ask.

I had the same issue last night. I had reformatted my Hard Drive a week prior to this, and shortly after purchasing AirMouse from the App store, that was the only app showing up under "applications" in iTunes when I hooked up my iPod Touch. Now when I backed up my library, I simply copied the files manually rather than using iTunes to transfer the files
I had issues moving my music library and making aliases a day before that when Front Row wouldn't recognize any of the music, so my folders were not in the right location. I ended up having two folders of "Mobile Applications"; one with the AirMouse app, the other with all the backed-up orgiinal applications.
I used iTunes to select "Import...", selected the folder of all the iPod Touch apps I had backed up, and it copied them over to the right folder. It also ended up replacing the apps I had on my iPod, but they were the same apps anyway. When I disconnected my iPod, the layout of the apps were the same as I had them before, even the frequently used apps I put on the bottom row of the iPod.

  • ITunes forgets where my music is

    Hi,
New to this forum, hope anybody can help me.
I have my music on a NAS drive. I tell iTunes in Edit | Preferences | Advanced the location of the music folder on that drive. So far so good. But everytime I shut down my laptop, or update iTunes, or whatever, iTunes 'forgets' it and stubbornly resets the location to My Documents | My Music etc. How can I make this stick? It's pretty frustrating to again have to organise the library after every restart or when I come back home and log on to my home network. This was supposed to be fun, right??
    Jan Didden

I will have to check it. Normally when I get back with the laptop and start it up, it gets into the network and the NAS should be there, way before I open iTunes, so that appears to rule it out as a cause. Unless there is a little iTunes 'helper' applet that hooks itself in as soon as I start up the laptop.
The other thing is that the library is maintained in My Documents|My Music|iTunes blabla.xml or something like that. Maybe I need to migrate that stuff to the NAS drive as well? Not sure about the significance of this.

  • Making iTunes forget what it knows about a CD

How do I make iTunes (for Mac) forget that it has ever seen a CD and everything it knows about it?
I put a CD into my iMac and iTunes popped up a window showing me the name of the CD three times, with slight variations, and I just took the default. I believe that was a mistake and I would like to make that choice over again. But I can't because iTunes remembers it has previously seen that CD. For example, it remembers the names of all the tracks. I would like it to forget all the track names and everything else it knows about that CD. How do I do that?

Thanks. I did not want to have iTunes forget all my CDs, just one of them, but your answer solved my problem. I temporarily renamed ~/Library/Preferences/CD Info.cidb and that was sufficient to make iTunes requery the database for the track names. That is what I wanted it to do, because that gave me the chance to select which online entry it read. It turned out that my original choice was okay after all; so I just put the CD Info.cidb file back.
    Thanks again.

  • ITunes forgetting "Remember Last Position" setting

    Hi, first post
Have a problem with iTunes that's only started happening recently. I have put some audiobooks into iTunes, selected them all, right click, Get Info, and tick "Remember Last Position" and "Skip When Shuffling". Click OK, then if I immediately go back into "Get Info" and look again, they've gone back to their default position of not remembering, and not skipping when shuffling.
If I choose an individual file and try to do the same, those two options are greyed out and can't be changed....which is odd.
Am I doing something wrong, or does it sound like a bug?
    Thanks in advance

Those 2 settings are stored in a file named iTunes Library.itl, I'm pretty sure, instead of the actual content file tags.
I suspect your Win 7 permissions aren't allowing itunes to change it, somehow. Which is really weird, if you can still add music.
When things are grayed out in the Info screen, it usually comes down to windows permissions. Even if you are the only user and an admin account.
Make sure you have *full control* and ownership of that file. Here is quick lesson with screenshots on changing permissions, whether you want delete it, or in your case, modify it.
    http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/windows-7-how-to-delete-files-protected-by-tru stedinstaller/
Remember to restart itunes after changing any permissions, so it will read the new settings.
If it still doesn't let you make changes, try temporarily turning off UAC.

  • Audio book loses (forgets) position

i  have been listening to audio books using the default music app, in itunes i set it as an audio book, to not  include it in shuffle, that it is a compilation and to remember where i  left off.
But if i don't go crazy closing apps after i use them (being very careful not to close music app) my iphone runs out of memory and completely forgets that it was even  playing anything, it is very frustrating trying to refind my position all the time.

This gets anoying very very quickly. It seems the player remembers some random point in the book and always resets to it.

  • ITunes "Forgets" Podcast Subscriptions

I recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard (10.6.2) and iTunes has started a disturbing behavior. It forgets podcast subscriptions if there are no episodes in iTunes for it to sync. I listen to several daily podcasts that I delete after listening to them. Since I have upgraded the OS, I have to re-subscribe to these podcasts on my iPod Touch whenever I get a new episode if there were no episodes in iTunes at the time. Am I missing a setting in iTunes or something that is making the iPod Touch forget its podcast subscriptions? Thanks for your help.

I am also having this problem.

  • AppleTV not updating iTunes playback position

I have some long MP4 audio files, which have "Remember Playback Position" toggled on.
My iPod plays them, when I stop listening, it remembers the position. When I sync it with iTunes, it updates iTunes with the new playback position.
On playing the same file on my Apple TV, the file starts playing in the correct (remembered) place. However on stopping the file, and resyncing the Apple TV with iTunes, it fails to update iTunes with the new "remembered" position.
    Is this repeatable by others?

I listen to long mp3 files with remember playback position set. It does not work when I sync to the Apple TV, but if I stream, iTunes does keep track of where I left off. So I can listen through the ATV, then sync to the nano and keep going where it left off when listening to the ATV via streaming.
I wish sync would remember but as of now it does not.

  • ITunes forgets equalizer settings

Hi, I just updated my Mac from Snow Leopard to Mavericks and iTunes now forgets the current equalizer setting every time I change a song (or a song changes in general - just tried letting it play until the end, when the next song starts, the EQ setting is gone again) or I start up iTunes. Althogh forgetting is not the right description. The setting stays selected, but another one is chosen. Not sure if it's always the same setting, but it's obviously not the setting I chose, since I have a neighbor friendly one that I use at night that has almost all the bass turned down.

Same issue here which only started with the update to iTunes 11 on both my wife's & my MBP's.
Have tried all the obvious things (such as Show View Options etc) but with no luck. Can only think that this is a bug that will hopefully be addressed soon.

  • ITunes forgets "Always display song info" setting

I have a few computers, all running Windows XP, except one, which is running W2k Pro. When I'm working around the house, cleaning, whatever, I like just throwing on some music on, so I turn the visualizer on, with the "Always display song info" option enabled. My problem is that the XP computers keep the setting enabled over periods of time, while on my 2000 computer, iTunes seems to forget every once in a while (i'm trying to figure out if it forgets every time i restart the computer or what).
Any input would be extremely helpful.
    Thanks in advance...

Hmm, it looks like the 'always display song info' option is only with a single visualizer, the iTunes Classic Visualizer. Selecting any of tghe other built-in iTunes' visualizers greys out the 'Options' menu.

  • ITunes Screen Position

iTunes keeps centering itself on the screen no matter where I move it. Any ideas on where to change this setting? It is not a big deal but it does get annoying. Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

I have this behavior too and I want my old position back!

  • ITunes window positions itself randomly

iTunes will sometimes position itself below the dock, about an inch below the top of the screen. I move it back to the top, but if I attempt to resize it, it will start to shrink from the top and the bottom simultaneously.
iTunes is the only program that does this.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have been having the same problem, and I cannot figure this out. The problem persisted even after HDD reformat and clean install of Mac OS X and updates. Reinstall of iTunes does not resolve problem either.
