ITunes freeze/hang help

When I launch iTunes it opens fine and it even plays a song when I double click it but as soon as I attempt to perform another task like Get Info or go to my Preferences iTunes freezes and nothing works. I have to launch task Manager and End Task for it to shut down. Then when I relaunch iTunes everything seems to work fine.
This is happening on a regular basis and it seems to only happen after I initially boot my computer. As long as the computer stays on after that I don't have anymore problems until I shut down and boot up the next day. I have the latest version of iTunes 10.4.1. 64-bit. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello,
sorry to hear that.
Did you try a PRAM reset (hold P-R-Option-Command right after pressing the power button)? It may help in case your Superdrive isn't recognized by the mac, thus letting you boot from the Install DVD.
Or, try a SMC reset (power down, pull mains plug, wait 15 secs, plug back in, power up again) before booting from the Superdrive.
My best bet is doing an archive-and-install of the system, then applying all the necessary updates from the Apple menu, as you already were attempting to. With a little luck, your apps, reg files and documents as well as the settings may still be there.
Also, getting yourself an external HD for safety backups is a MUST. Oh yes, don't forget Alsoft's DiskWarrior which can be really handy if nothing else works.
Good luck.

  • Conecting ipod causes ITunes to hang---Help please

I have an Ipod touch 2nd generation with latest ipod software and itunes 10,1,1,4 on windows xp service pack 3. When I connect the ipod to an usb port itunes loads automatically then hangs. The ipod is not shown in itunes. If I disconnect the ipod Itunes works immediately then hangs again if I recconnect. I've tried reinstalling itunes but this did not solve the problem. Any help will be appreciated
    Peter

It may not be the iPod that's causing the problem. I've had similar issues with two models of Epson printer and a Dell PC running both Vista & XP. I have one of the same printers on another machine (a different Dell model) which works fine! The symptoms I get mean that if I connect the printer, ANY external USB drive-like device fails. iPod, USB memory key, external USB hard drive etc. Windows still lists the device, and often shows one or more layers of folders however all the folders appear to be empty of files. Scary or what!?! Sometimes the printer can also prevent the PC booting up. I suspect that it takes a number of factors, hardware & software, to trigger the issue which means it's unlikely to get resolved since it's both hard to reproduce & determine exactly which subsystem is to blame. It's not ideal, but I just shut down the external drive when I want to print, then turn the printer off and the drive back on when I'm done.

  • ITunes Freezes Computer HELP!

Hey Guys I have been having this problem for awhile now. I got my computer back in October and I never had this issue til later in the year. My computer totally freezes majority of the time when I use iTunes. I have tried running no other programs but iTunes and it still freezes randomly. The only major issue I have with this is that I cannot listen to my music since I can't use iTunes without it freezing. After it freezes my computer follows the same pattern every time. I have to wait like 10 Minutes after I shut the computer off manually to turn it back on. If I try turning it back on before the 10 minutes is up the computer sits at the windows loading screen and does not stop. If I wait 10 minutes as I said the computer starts normally and I have no issues til I open up iTunes and try to play a song. I thought maybe it was my sound card, but I can use any other media player and I have no issues. My friend has the same problem on a computer he built last summer. We have totally different computers so it is definately not hardware. I just want to know if there is anyone else who has this problem and knows how to fix the freezing. It gets really irratating when I go to listen to my favorite tune while I surf the net or play a game and the computer freezes and will not turn back on for 10 minutes. I have tried reformatting and I could listen to iTunes again, but after a couple of days it goes back to doing the same thing. Help would most definately be appreciated!

If you plug your ipod into your computer after deleting songs on your computer then it will automatically update and delete all the songs on your ipod that aren't on your computer. You can turn this option off my plugging your ipod into the computer before you delete the songs and go into the ipod options. Turn off the auto update option and you should be good to go. You can also try using a progrma called ephpod that takes all your songs on your ipod and puts them on your computer without destroying the songs on the ipod if they are not on the computer. Hope this solves your problem.

  • IPod Touch 2G will not Sync. iTunes freezes. Help?

    Hi,
I have an iPod Touch 2G and iTunes on 10.5.8. I cannot place the exact time things stopped syncing, but it was right around when I upgraded to OS 3 for the iPod, and installed iTunes 8.2. Subsequently, I have tried each version/update of iTunes thereafter, up to the most recent update for 9 (Sept.29,2009). I did receive error messages for a time when the problems started, but those have stopped now (AppleMobileDeviceHelper has quit unexpectedly.) I have been able to successfully sync about twice in the past four months - and that after waiting through a beachball for about 20 minutes each time. I also have tried installing the iPhone Configuration Utility. No go.
    Not sure what to do aside from a complete uninstall/reinstall of iTunes. Gah. Someone tell me that isn't necessary and that there is an easy fix? Thanks;

Here's an easy fix: go to username/library/application support, and delete the folder "syncservices". Log out and then back in again. Itunes should be syncing the iPods normally. If that doesn't work, then I'd recommend you reinstalling iTunes.

  • ITunes 10.4.1 freeze (hang) when webradio stream drop out for any reason.

    Hello,
My iTunes freeze (hang) when any webradio stream drop out for any reason; e.g. when ISP renews the IP, the radio station has limited the stream duration (as some do) per connection or wireless is cut off e.g. by closing the lid of the MacBook.
I've to force Quit then iTunes. If I wait (up to an hour for testing) no hung or crash report get generated, iTunes still stay unresponsive.
    System: MacBook Pro 2011
OS: OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard)
    iTunes version: 10.4.1 (10)
    iTunes 3rd Party add-on's: None
    Any ideas out there?
    Cheers - Lupunus

I will commiserate. I have this same issue. In some cases, the stream will stop and restart after 15-30 seconds; repeat. In other cases, the stream will stop, and iTunes will switch to the last radio station in that playlist. Then that station will play for a few minutes, and stop, and sometimes restart. But usually iTunes will hang (spinning beach ball) and must be force-quit.

  • Everytime i eject my ipod and reconnect it all my music is gone. and sometimes while i try adding music to it. itunes completely freezes. please help. and sometimes when i plug it back into my PC i have to rename my ipod and such

Everytime i eject my ipod and reconnect it all my music is gone. and sometimes while i try adding music to it. itunes completely freezes. please help. and sometimes when i plug it back into my PC i have to rename my ipod and such

Antivirus has a tendency to freeze iTunes sync Operation with iPod Classic, causing a timeout, which corrupt your iPod filesystem, so when iTunes can't read the iPod, it is pointing to this problem. Other causes is when your iPod hardisk is dying, or your battery is dying causing hardisk crashes.
    My suggestion.
Connect your iPod to the PC and run chkdsk, to fix any iPod diskerror, then disconnect it, after chkdsk complete.
Disconnect your PC from Internet. (just to make sure no nasties creep into your system while you syncing.
    Stop the Antivirus program
Connect your Ipod to the PC
When iTunes Open up, Restore your iPod please, this is for iTunes to map correctly, to fix the corrupted filesystem.
When Restore complete, eject the iPod and reconnect again.
Sync your ipod, preferably manually Manage in small batches and disconnect after every batch, to check that all is well, since you got such a huge library.
When all sync is complete, and iPod disconnected, start back your Antivirus and connect back the Internet.
If this doesn't resolve your problem, then let me know.
    Good Luck!

  • Help!!! iPod won't sync with iTunes, iTunes freezes!

Hello, I'm sorry if this topic is already in an other one, but I couldn't find it.
First of all, I'm very pleased with my iPod Classic 160Gb, finally I can carry my complete collection with me. Since I'd installed the 8.0.1 update for iTunes, my iTunes freezes immediately, and my iPod won't show up in iTunes, and the screen of the Classic is stuck on "Connected".
If I don't connect, iTunes works perfectly, even with my iPhone (Everything works smoothly).
What is the problem?, I've tried everything, Reboot iPod Classic 160 Gb, reïnstall iTunes (complete deinstallation), i tried different USB-ports of my laptop, other USB-cabel, reboot PC. All updates, even my USB-ports. Can somebody please tell me what's happening? And solve my problem?
I didn't found this same problem in any of other topics, if someone finds the same topic WITH an answer, I would be pleased.

Ok seriously. We pay way too much for these things for crap like this to happen all the time. Apple has us all by the gonads b/c they know we can't get them to work any other way.
Friday, my 80G classic worked just freaking fine on my home computer. After I reinstalled it b/c of some error with quicktime. I also connected it to my brother's laptop over the weekend it did fine. Used it on work computer today worked fine---after I had to uninstall and reinstall quicktime.
Loaded the iTunes upgrade on work computer today, seemed to work fine after that.
Now at home I get the following error: Your iPod needs to be reformatted for use with Windows. Would you like to run iTunes to restore your iPod now?
I've tried for weeks now to back up my iTunes on both my computers and it always freezes. I was hoping after the new version this would be fixed. NOT so much.
So in a nut shell....I CAN'T back up my stuff, b/c iTunes *****. Now in order to use it I have to reformat my iPod, which will erase all my stuff. So I'm SCREWED. I'm not usually a hostile person, but at this point I could scream!!!!!
the apple/iTunes support team has been nothing but helpful on some duplicate song issues I've had in the past. Why in the H*LL can't they freaking fix this???
If I have to reload 80G it won't be on an iPod. I'll sell the **** thing to some other sucker, find something else, or for pete's sake, go back to CDs.
Don't tell me Apple doesn't have enough money or enough geniuses (genii) to figure this out with out it causing my time and money I've already spent.
    Rant over....

  • IPod won't sync correctly. iTunes freeze during "Determing Tracks to Sync". Playcounts are a mess now. Please help!'

So since a few months my iPod is starting to get on my nerves. Everytime I try to sync it, my iTunes freezes during the "Determing Tracks to Sync" step. Most of the time it takes a few minutes and then it cancels the sync. I have to sync my ipod atleast 10 times a day to get a song or app on my iPod! One of the most anoyying things tough is, that all playcounts from my iPod sync to my iTunes every time I try to sync. Example: I play Poker Face on my iPod 5 times. I try to sync and my play count says 5 times on my PC. I sync my iPod again and it says 10 times now. It's so anoyying. I restored my iPod already. I removed iTunes and installed it again (And yeah, I deleted it the way Apple wants it). I called Apple and they said I can repair my iPod for 150€, but that's just so much. Any ideas on how to fix my iPod?
    Thank you

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions.
Because you reformatted your computer, your iPod does not recognize the new library because it was synced with the older library you had before reformatting. In order to get the iPod working again, you will have to [Restore|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339] the iPod via iTunes. Once you have completed that step, try re-syncing the music and see if that helps.

  • ITunes freezes when opening, please help

Whenever I try to open my iTunes it starts by "updating" my library, then it either freezes halfway through that or it freezes about 2 seconds later. I've tried to figure it out but nothing I try has been working. I've noticed that iTunes is trying to download a podcast right after but I don't know if that's the problem. I've tried to unsubscribe to the specific podcast but I can't get to it in time before it freezes. please help me
    Dell Demension E310   Windows XP

    Hi
I had the same and I feel that your library is corrupted. Don’t be afraid since I could repair the iTunes following the next steps:
    A) Recreate the library:
    Follow these steps:
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Locate your iTunes folder.
 For Mac OS X the iTunes folder is stored in one of the following locations:
    /Users/username/Music
 For Microsoft Windows XP and 2000 the iTunes folder is stored in
    \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\
 For Microsoft Windows Vista the iTunes folder is stored in
    \Users\username\Music\
    3. Open your iTunes folder.
    4. Drag the iTunes Music Library.xml to the Desktop
    5. Drag the following file from your iTunes folder to the Trash:
     Microsoft Windows: "iTunes Library.itl"
    6. Open iTunes.
    7. From the File menu, choose Import.
    8. Navigate to the iTunes Music Library.xml file on the Desktop.
    9. Windows users: Click Open.
Moreover you should follow the next steps.
    1. Quit iTunes.
    2. Move the iTunes Library file located at C:\Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\iTunes to your desktop
    3. Open iTunes.
    4. From the File menu, choose Add Folder to Library.
Navigate to the folder where your music is located. Typically this is
    C:\Users\username\Music\iTunes\iTunes Music
In this way I could repair the iTunes 7.2. I apologize for my poor English and I hope to be of help for you.

  • Help: iTunes freezes when I try to change the music folder location

    Hi everyone,
I want to change my iTunes music folder location but every time I click on the change button (Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Change) iTunes freezes. All of my music is in an external drive and I recently reinstalled windows, so I had to back up the old iTunes folder and replace the default one (after the reinstallation) with it, but now I can't set the new location of the drive because of this problem.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated
    A.

Okay. Finally called Apple, and they said that this is something to do with the latest iTunes - 10.6 - and the only way to solve it is to restore my iPod, and then arrange it so I manually manage my music, etc. Which I learned how to do here: http://en.kioskea.net/faq/3740-how-to-manually-manage-music-and-videos-in-itunes  It worked. Woo-hoo!

  • ITunes 10.2.1.1 (64 bit) freezes/hangs sometimes after playing videos

On a fresh install of Windows 7 64 bit on Basecamp, using iTunes 64 bit. iTunes will sometimes just hang when a video or video podcast finishes. I have to kill iTunes and restart it. There is a thread about this at:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12606470&#12606470
But it was ignored and archived.
Note the same thing was also happening on my Dell XPS Laptop with Windows 7 64-bit.

Same thing is happening to me also.
this new itunes doesnt seem windows 7 x64 bit happy.
i am also experiencing itunes freezing when clicking on podcasts on the left sidebar.
i tried installing sp1 for windows 7 but didnt fix it.

  • My Itunes freezes when i connect my Ipad. Help?

I have a 3rd gen Ipad with version  6.1.3 installed and Itunes 11.0.2.26 installed. I am trying to connect my ipad to my laptop (windows 7). Each time I connect the USB cable, Itunes recognizes the ipad and trys to connect to it. As it trys Itunes freezes and i canot do anything. (if i am listening to music it wil continue until that song is done) The rest of my computer is fine and not frozen. Itunes will eventually get to the point where it will show a little picture of the ipad instead of the circular loading symbol. But at that point itunes is completely frozen and i can't even open any menus. If i then unplug the ipad, itunes will free up like nothing happened. i have tried reinstalling itunes, restarting my computer, resetting the device manager, restarting my ipad, tried all of my USB ports, tried connecting with my Wireless internet disconnected, and probably a few more things i can't think of, oh and when i run the diagnostics, it tells me that there is no ipad detected. And when i am plugged in, my ipad charges for a split second then says it is not charging in the top right corner. Help?

Go to Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (Win XP) or Programs and Features (later)
Remove all of these items in the following order:
    iTunes
    Apple Software Update
Apple Mobile Device Support (if this won't uninstall move on to the next item)
    Bonjour
    Apple Application Support
Reboot, download iTunes, then reinstall, either using an account with administrative rights, or right-clicking the downloaded installer and selecting Run as Administrator.
The uninstall and reinstall process will preserve your iTunes library and settings, but ideally you would back up the library and your other important personal documents and data on a regular basis. See this user tip for a suggested technique.
    Please note:
Some users may need to follow all the steps in whichever of the following support documents applies to their system. These include some additional manual file and folder deletions not mentioned above.
