ITunes freeze ONLY when iPod is hooked up

...the start bar also starts to lag and eventually freezes after a while. But, once I unplug my iPod, everything goes back to normal, like nothing ever happened. My iPod is showing up as a removable storage device in the device manager and I can even file surf it but iTunes refuses to pick it up. I have downloaded the latest version of iTunes too. Any ideas?

Now when I try to turn on my iPod, I get the folder w/ exclamation point. I checked the support page and it said that I needed to update my iPod... Well, I can't, STILL waiting for help here.

Hello. Here's a real head-scratcher...
I have an iPod touch (model MA627LL, sw version 2.2.1) that I've used with no problem on this computer for a long time. It had not synced since last April, so I tried this morning, and have been troubleshooting ever since!
a) Windows Vista ultimate brought up Autoplay when I plug in the Ipod - so I went into Control Panel and told it to stop that.
b) Plugging in the iPod does NOT make iTunes come up
c) Open iTunes first (version 8.2.1.6) ad THEN plug in iPod - not only does it not acknowledge the device, but iTunes freezes. If I unplug the iPod, then it unfreezes! This is regardless of what USB pot I use. (Keep in mind this was never a problem before)
d) I made sure I have the latest Windows updates (gawd I hate Windows--but that's another topic)
e) I reset the iPod (but not sure if there is a "harsher" reset I should try?
f) Have rebooted the computer...
Three notes:
1) This is an almost-one-year-old high-end laptop from Sager with top-of-line everything.
2) I use a universal remote with my iPod (has worked fine for about 7 months) -- this stopped working with the iPod some time in the last few days. Interesting coincidence, eh? (BTW -- it's the Harmony remote from Logitech -- an AWESOME product!)
3) I recently went through heck to get some software running on my computer that requires a dreaded hardware dongle for security which uses the USB. It took MANY tries and good luck to get it to work... so I suspect it maybe screwed up my USB driver? BUT all my other USB stuff still work fine.
Any suggestions?

Also -- when I go to Device Manager, there are no issues at all in the USB controllers list -- and in fact my iPod isn't listed there at all. However, in the "Portable Devices" section , my iPod is listed there -- and the properties says that the driver is provided by Microsoft (not Apple) and is dated 6/21/2006 and is version 6.0.6001.18000

ITunes freezes (SWOD) when iPOD is connected

Since the latest iTunes upgrade to 7.7.1, iTunes freezes (SWOD) when my iPOD is connected. Worse, if one clicks on iTunes to make it the foreground application, the entire system becomes frozen and only powering off/on with the power button gets the system back (unless one forgets to disconnect the iPOD in which case one is back where one started).
This is an old iPOD that uses a firewire connection. Given how difficult it is completely crash a *nix-based system, I suspect a hardware interrupt is behind this but who knows? Searching the knowledge base and forums hasn't lead to any solution.
Any suggestions?

CPU (HP-W.XP) freezes only when Ipod is plugged in through USB

I have read a good deal of posts that tackle the issue of the Itunes(V7) freeze, yet allowing the user to navigate around the rest of the screen.
I am having the full problem. The entire computer freezes the second I plug the Ipod in.
This has happened with:
-Itunes already opened prior to insertion.
-With Itunes closed.
The ipod (60g Video btw)does charge and information is not lost, but this of course negates the option to add podcasts and such, or use my laptop when it is inserted. In addition when the ipod is disconnected I am again able to navigate. This is spec an ipod issue as far as I am able to tell.
So, has anyone had this problem?
I will probably revert to an older version if I must.
Suggestions?

Odd, but after leaving the iPod attached all night
(still using 7.0.2) none of the 21 gigs was copied to
the iPod except 1 episode of a podcast.
So it is still stuttering, and still "not responding"
with 7.0.0. Plus, even though I restored my iPod, it
did not ask or give me the opportunity to rename the
iPod after the restore. Should I try to reinstall
from the original cd? and then run iPod update from
the summary screen or try to find iPod updater
somewhere on the web? My 30g ipod is just ablut 1
year old and needed updating as soon as I bought it.
Any thoughts would be greatly appriciated before my
black iPod becomes an expensive hockey puck!
Have you tried removing your podcast subscriptions?
I was reading other posts that explained that "mad money" and otther various podcasts caused itunes/cpu to crash.
Rather than that, the process above is what provided my remedy.

ITunes crashing (only when iPod Touch is connected)

It just started last night. Anytime I try to add music to the library or choose the folder to sync photos from, basically anytime iTunes has to access explorer to browse folder, it crashes and it doesn't give me any sort of error. It just tells me it has crashed and is reporting the problem. Like I said though, this only happens when the iPod Touch is connected. If I unplug it and then add music, it works fine but without it plugged in I can't add photos. Also, if I already have iTunes open and then connect the iPod, it crashes. I have to have the iPod already connected and then I can open iTunes.
Any ideas? I switched to using iTunes as my default player because WMP had too many issues. I don't want to have to go back.

I tried on another PC. Same crash. It seems either the problem is on the iPod Touch side, or some more general problem with iTunes.

I've been trying to put some tunes on my 40gb ipod 4g classic . I've reinstalled windows to factory setting . Downloaded new itunes . Formatted ipod . Restored it but still freezes when I connect it to my laptop . Windows 7 toshiba laptop , no anti virus . Just as it was when I bought it . The ipod works when disconnected . I can play games etc . Well it runs fine when I connect my iphone and iPad . Just bought a 5th gen classic and that runs fine . Windows 7 dual core 4gb ram . Don't know much else to do but scrap it. eBaying it.

Setesh, See if both computer has the same version of iTunes, if both are the same, then it is your PC, that has plug-ins which is in conflict it iTunes. ( normally it is the Antivirus or some plug-ins to beautify your screen)
If it is different, most likely the other PC has an older version of iTunes, so you should downgrade your iTunes to that older version, which your iPod interface well with.
Other probable causes,
you are using the USB 1.1 port at the front of your PC, and not the USB2,0 port at the back of your PC. so switch to the back.
Dont use any other USB devices, when you are syncing the iPod.
Dont use any USH Hub.

I can't update my iPod, because iTunes freeze's when i try so. I can't restore my iPod, because no button names that is appearing. I can't update it either, so donøt know what to do. I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes, and it didn't help.
I've been thinking about, reinstalling iTunes, but what will happen with all the music then? I've used tons of hours on getting it on my computer, so don't want it to get lost. What will happen with the music if i reinstall?

The music files should stay right where they are, in the music folder.
Reinstalling iTunes will change stuff in the c:Program Files folder.
That being said, it's always a good idea to have backups in case something goes wrong. You do have backups, right?
Also - before every itunes upgrade, you chould also back up the library ITL file which holds all your playcounts, ratings, etc.
I back mine up on a USB stick, or you could just put it in another folder on your hard drive.

Playlists on itunes vs only on ipod

i have playlists on my ipod but i have none in itunes. i rarely listen to music on my computer at home so i didn't see the point. i guess because of this i manually manage my ipod. my photos are sync'd and update when i plug in. my other things (podcasts, videos, movies, audiobooks etc) are not.
i was reading an article about itunes that said it communicates with the ipod and knows what you have listened to and can keep track. well because i am not sync'd i guess it cannot.
because i am not sync'd and my play counts do not match i was thinking about creating a smart playlist that i could sync. when i created it and was going to select it to sync i got the message that i wasn't tied to that itunes and that it would replace all my ipod content.
i've always used this itunes with only this ipod and my photos do sync. is it possible for me to create 1 playlist that does sync or am i out of luck? i have lots of things on my ipod that i no longer have in itunes and do not want to lose.

Re-synched with no checking, and half of the songs from the third playlist showed up in one of the previously synched playlists.... I am so confused! The machines seem to be confused?

The apps will all be blank that are downloaded and that part of the software crashes itunes or freezes up. I can get out of itunes okay after the freeze up, but it just stops me from syncing anything that I have newly added. If anyone has had this problem before or knows someone that has, please let me know how I can fix it. I have uninstalled and reloaded itunes 4 or 5 times, but the problem is still there. I might add that I have been using itunes and purchasing apps for 2 to 3 years without any problems. HELP.

Restart your computer and lauch the Activity Monitor application. That will show you all the programs running on your computer along with how much RAM and CPU time each application is using. Next, launch iTunes and see how many resources it is taking up. Is it hogging all the available RAM and/or CPU cycles? It could be that you don't have enough free RAM or CPU cycles. If you're running close to 100% before you get to the movies, it could be they are pushing you over the top. The Activity Monitor application can show you if that's the case. If so, then try to select Movies and see if your iTunes application starts trying to use up even more resources. If so, try a RAM upgrade and/or a faster processor. These are just suggestions, of course, but I hope they help.

Try quitting the App Store:
Tap the home button to get to the home screen. Then double tap the home button, and hold your finger over the App Store icon. Tap the red when it appears. Tap the home button again to return to the home screen.
Try resetting:
Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears. No data will be lost.

When I hit Eject I get the spinning beachball and have to hit command-option-escape to get out of it or the beachball will stay present forever. Any suggestions?

Here's what I've done so far;
I 've checked my external hardrive (by playing it off my internal instead), I've tried reinstalling (although it wasn't an uninstall), I've tried clicking on all the neccesary boxes (let itunes organize files, copy files, consolidate, and reorganize), I've tried different sound cards, I've tried moving files quickly (as some have said this works). I'm not sure what's wrong. I have 7000 songs.
Any help would be great!

Have you tried installing Media Manager on another computer and streaming the songs from there?
How about smaller playlists? See the same problem?

ITunes Freezing Intermittently when Playing from iPod

Hello,
If anyone could shed any light on this I'd be most grateful. My problem, like many others, began when I updated the iTunes software a few days ago but the problem itself seems to be different.
My iPod is mounting fine and iTunes recognises it okay. I always play my music off my iPod and don't keep it in the library, which up until now has produced no problems. However, since updating iTunes keeps freezing in the middle of playing, as if I've hit pause. It does this a few times and then re-starts after a minute or so. After doing that maybe four or five times it crashes the programme completely and iPod freezes as well.
iPod then won't eject, even if I eject it off the desktop. iTunes won't quit, even using force quit it just keeps coming back, and then the whole system crashes and I have to do an emergency switch-off. Most times, the iPod itself stays frozen on the 'Do Not Disconnect' screen and obviously I'm damaging both iPod and PowerBook by having to dismount it without correctly ejecting and switching off without shutting down. It's driving me insane!
Any ideas? Preferably ones that don't involve major things like totally re-formatting the iPod - especially because to transfer my music back on to my computer is probably going to cause it to crash again.
I've got a 20GB 3G iPod - are Apple just making software that totally ruins older generation iPods or what?!
Any help would be greatly appreciated,

You should get your songs into iTunes and then immediately back them up.
