  • Help! iTunes is making my iMac act like a Windows machine!

    Here is the basic problem:
Some songs will not play properly in iTunes, pausing often and causing the spinning beach ball of death to freeze my iMac for 5 to 10 minutes at a time, sometimes longer. I am also having problems ripping those songs to a CD.
I am trying to decide if I should uninstall iTunes or simply back everything up and do a clean install of Snow Leopard and iTunes.
I’m also wondering if simply getting more RAM would solve my woes. I have 2GB, which worked well for years. I have 4GB coming in the mail.
I have a 2008 iMac. It has about 175GB of free space on its hard drive, about 144 GB in use. With iTunes playing a file and nothing of particular note open, it has just under 1GB of free system memory, or RAM. I have both the latest version of Snow Leopard and iTunes installed. All software is up to date. Except, of course, that I'm not running Lion.
I have a 45GB in music and 54GB in podcasts in my iTunes library.
I have corrected my hard drive’s permissions repeatedly but am unaware of any other maintenance I should be doing on my hard drive.
Here are some observations that may or may not be helpful:
Songs in the same folder are behaving differently, some consistently playing without a problem, others consistently spinning the beach ball.  For example, five songs off an album will freeze up my iMac but the album’s other songs do not.
I can, however, duplicate the symptoms with otherwise dependable songs by having more applications open. Nothing major, say Safari, Finder and iTunes. What I don’t get is why some songs would play well and others not when only iTunes is open.
Having a handful of applications open now sometimes prompts the spinning beach ball of death. This never used to happen, hence the RAM coming in the mail.
When I check information on the malfunctioning music files, it shows they contain data, but I start getting the beach ball checking  the file’s “sharing & permissions” status in "Get Info."
Interestingly, I recently had to stop backing up my podcasts in Time Machine because some of them were crashing it. My music files, however, have been backing up fine in Time Machine, so far.
Also, when I try to copy my music files onto an external drive or my desk top – in anticipation of reinstalling iTunes -- my iMac cites error 36 and stops the process.
My iMac’s performace problems started to occur before I finally updated to Snow Leopard a few months ago. Indeed, I thought updating would solve them.
I had been regularly updating iTunes, however, I recall reading somewhere that upgrading to Snow Leopard while having an up-to-date iTunes installed might cause problems.
There you have it. Any advice or insights would he most welcome.

Well, I seem to have solved my own problem. Do I get 10 points, I wonder? It appears that my poor iMac was in desperate need of a masssive cleaning. Thanks to other posts here and elsewhere, I found out about Cocktail, a free download -- unless you chip in for the more advanced version. This is a powerful and easy to understand tool. I used it to perk my iMac up to a level I have not seen in a LONG time. The spinning beach ball of death must go play elsewhere.  Among other things, I cleared out all my caches, eliminated a ton of foreign languages and did several repairs, including tracking down and killing a corrupted permission. It also taught me how to tap into my computer's activity logs and gave me other useful insights. GOOD stuff. I did other things not related to Cocktail to free up processing power -- such as turning off file- size view option in Finder -- but Cocktail is what solved this problem. As I type this, I am happily listening to songs that earlier would not play. What a relief. I am now especially looking forward to that new RAM. We'll be blazing fast then, by gum.

  • Why does iTunes freeze up for minutes at a time when modifying INFO (CMD-i) ?  My files are not corrupted after it is done like many other threads i have readed.

Why does iTunes freeze up for minutes at a time when modifying INFO (CMD-i) ?  My files are not corrupted after it is done like many other threads i have readed.  Sometimes it's changing the title of a movie or editing the season and episode number of a TV show ect.....

    Yup same here
I am running the latest iTunes, the latest updates to the OS and on an iMac 3.4GHz Quad core i7 with 8GB of RAM and the music stored on local HDD.
Still locks up iTunes for between 2 minutes up to 20 minutes.
    Really annoying.
If you find a fix please, please let me know, I have just been throwing hardware at it with no joy at all

  • Itunes freezes when importing cd's

Everytime I try to import a cd itunes freezes on track 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12. I have to force quit itunes like a dozen times before itunes quits and I can remove the cd from the drive. What is going on? Is it some setting I have? This happens on 9 out of 10 cd's. They are not very scrathed up at all. Any ideas?

Same happening here. If I have a CD which iTunes isn't happy with (presumably too scratched), iTunes just locks up. The machine won't let me bring up the force-quit dialog, nor can I easily switch to other programs (and when I do, the whole machine is really sluggish).
I'm going to switch off the audio correction option for importing -- my guess is that iTunes just gets in an infinite loop trying to read corrupt data from a CD, and slowly ends up hogging all the Mac's resources.

  • ITunes freezes when I connect iPad or iPod

Whenever I connect my iPod classic or iPad, iTunes freezes and I have to force quit.
This happened in the previous OS and this one, and with all iTunes versions.
I'm on a 2006 iMac, upgraded to 10.7 from 10.6.8. I'm up to date on iTunes.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

    have a look at
    http://brainiac4.blogspot.com/2006/11/ipod-100-cpu-utilization-problem.html
might be the answer to your problem as it was to mine.
"The problem, as it turned out, is all about drive letters. It seems that iPods do not like to share their drive letter with other devices, even if said devices are not connected.
If you're having this problem, try what worked for me:
With the iPod connected (and CPU at 100%, of course)
Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management
Select the iPod and choose a different letter. "

  • ITunes freezes when opeining if connected to the internet

I have a problem that started this weekend. If I am connected to the internet, my iTunes freezes when I open it. It just gets stuck with the spinning beach ball. Any idea what might be causing this? I'd guess its something to do with syncing to icloud, but i tried disabling the auto download music & apps in preferences, and that didn't help

I am totally stuck on the same issue and have been for almost a year. Auto downloads and genius are disabled. I'm using a iMac and have upgraded to Lion OS 10.7.3. Being on an iMac means I can't uninstall iTunes but I am now on iTunes 10.6.1 (7). Think that's the latest.
If I disconnect from the internet I can use iTunes no problems but that kind of defeats the purpose of the store and I liked being able to control iTunes from my iPhone!
I've restarted literally tens of times.
Anyone that can help? should i raise another thread?
    Thanks!

  • Cursor freezes on 17" iMac G5 1.9Ghz

The Cursor keeps freezing on an iMac G5 1.9 Ghz...all the software is updated....

Hi strings, and welcome to the discussions.
But can you give us any more information?
What are you doing when it happens? What software
are you usually using? Do you have an Apple keyboard
and mouse? When did it first start happening? Does it
"unfreeze" eventually? How much RAM do you have in
your computer? What other devices do you have
connected to the computer, etc etc
The more information you can provide about the
situation the easier it will be to help you. On the
basis of what you have told us so far the problem
could be caused by any of a hundred and one things.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • ITunes freezes MacBook Pro after Mountain Lion reinstall

A bad sector on my Macbook Pro (synched to my iMac) occurred within days of my first Mountain Lion update. I reinstalled Mountain lion, and used migration assistant with time machine to reinstall everything else.
It was working for 8 hours when I decided to turn on iTunes. What resulted was the bouncing iTunes logo stopped bouncing, and Finder stopped working, until the whole computer seized up. After a hard reboot, I got the same behavior. Each time iTunes freezes, after 10 minutes, you get
"A required iTunes compoenent is not installed." Please reinstall iTunes (-42403).
Can you do this in Mountain Lion? And is this just a symptom of a larger problem?  Disk Utilities permissions doesn't help. And the hard drive is OK.

Did you ever have the WiFI card on your machine replaced ? Have you tried taking it to an Apple Store ?

  • My iTunes freezes when trying to sync iPad

This appears to be happening when I open iTunes on my iMac and it attempts to connect and sync to either iPad in the house.  If the iPads are off and they don't try to connect, iTunes opens and works normal.  When I turn the iPads on and the attempt to connect wirelessly, then iTunes freezes.  This only began after the last update. Can anyone help me?

  • Itunes freezes when i try to apply changes to sync options

I added a new playlist to add to my daughter's iPod nano (6th generation).  When I go to add the playlist to the sync and hit 'Apply' iTunes freezes and does nothing.  Any  help?

Apple just released an update to iTunes that says it includes a fix for this issue.
This new update DID fix my issue.  iTunes no longer freezes when applying updates from my iMac to my nano.
    So run your software update!
Fixes several issues that may cause iTunes to unexpectedly quit while playing videos, changing artwork size in Grid view, and syncing photos to devices.
Addresses an issue where some iTunes interface elements are incorrectly described by VoiceOver and WindowEyes.
Fixes a problem where iTunes may become unresponsive while syncing iPod nano or iPod shuffle.
Resolves an ordering problem while browsing TV episodes in your iTunes library on Apple TV.

  • Itunes freezes when renaming movies

i try and rename a movie in my itunes and it gives me the spinning wheel of death..any ideas??
    Itunes 9

    Hoping to ressurect this thread...
I am in the process of transferring my iTunes library and (perhaps) "life" over to an iMac 27 from a Windows PC; however, I am having some issues with my iTunes Library. Specifically, I am unable to update the metatag data (i.e. rename files) for movies in my iTunes library. iTunes freezes and the "beachball" continues to spin into eternity, until I "force quit" the application. I've also noticed that it ends up corrupting the files and rendering them useless, which forces me to reconvert them for compatibility with an iPod using Quicktime.
My iTunes library resides on a NAS connected via a 100 Mbps wired connection.
The following is the link to another thread on the same topic:

  • Itunes freezes when I connect a device on a Macbook Pro

    Macbook Pro Details:
    Ver 10.9.3
    13-inch, Late 2011
Procesador 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memoria 16 GB 1333 MHz DDR3

    Iphone 5 64 MB ver 7.1.1
    IPAD 2 64 MB ver 7.1.1
Hi, my problem is that suddenly since last week my Itunes freezes every time I try to connect my IPAD or my IPHONE it was working great but now I have this problem. I lready completely remove Itunes and I already re-installed ver 11.2 and 11.2.1 but the problem is the same. I already tried to connect my devices to other compurer (I have an IMac) and both devices were recognized without problems. I also restored my IPHONE to default settings but after that the problem is the sameone. I would like to say that my devices are being recongnized wihout problems by my Macbook Pro, it also oppens automatically Iphoto and I can get the pictures from my two devices so I know that it is not a problem with my Macbook or the USB ports.
Pleeeeease, I will run a Marathon next July and I need to sync my music and my playlists.

  • ITunes freezing, and won't even force quit

There was an update to iTunes about a week ago. Since that update iTunes freezes when launched. "If" it starts working after I patiently wait several minutes, it freezes again as soon as I choose any menu option. If I connect my iPad it begins to synch, but it freezes during step 1 of 6 and never starts again. I tried holding down the power button to restart the computer, but unfortunately Lion opens the last used apps on restart, so guess what opens and freezes the computer again. If I manage to get it to force quit, everything else on the computer works fine. I'm using a 27" iMac with Lion and have 12 gigs of RAM. Any suggestions?
