ITunes freezes during file transfers

I'm just hooking up my 20 GB/color iPod for the first time, and this is the problem I'm running in to:
iTunes recognizes the iPod and starts to transfer songs, but after a small number (sometimes only 1-2 go, once it got to about 150) it just stops. No error message, nothing. The box at the top will just flash between the next song on the list and "updating - do not disconnect" message.
If I try to eject the iPod, I get the warning message (are you sure you want to do this? it's updating etc.). If I click yes, then the program just locks up completely. If I click no, then the program just locks up completely. If I never try to eject it, then the program just locks up completely. I never get any kind of error message telling me what's wrong. Also, iTunes will hang in Windows, can't be shut down through the Task Manager, and if you choose to shut down the computer, it will hang and won't complete powering off.
I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the iPod software and the iTunes software. I've tried about 5 different USB ports (yes, they're all 2.0; no, I don't have a Firewire port) with the same problem. I've reset the iPod numerous times. Nothing works.
Thoughts? I've been reading about problems with iTunes v.5 - could that be the culprit? I'll add that I haven't installed Windows XP Service Pack 2 (though I'm going to do that right now after backing up my hard drive). We'll see if that helps.

HI THERE- I HAVE BEEN HAVING THE SAME PROBLEM. I'VE GOT USB 2.0 PORTS AND WORKING ON A PC. I'LL GET PART WAY THRU TRANSFERRING SONGS ONTO MY IPOD, THEN IT DISCONNECTS.

  • IPod won't sync correctly. iTunes freeze during "Determing Tracks to Sync". Playcounts are a mess now. Please help!'

So since a few months my iPod is starting to get on my nerves. Everytime I try to sync it, my iTunes freezes during the "Determing Tracks to Sync" step. Most of the time it takes a few minutes and then it cancels the sync. I have to sync my ipod atleast 10 times a day to get a song or app on my iPod! One of the most anoyying things tough is, that all playcounts from my iPod sync to my iTunes every time I try to sync. Example: I play Poker Face on my iPod 5 times. I try to sync and my play count says 5 times on my PC. I sync my iPod again and it says 10 times now. It's so anoyying. I restored my iPod already. I removed iTunes and installed it again (And yeah, I deleted it the way Apple wants it). I called Apple and they said I can repair my iPod for 150€, but that's just so much. Any ideas on how to fix my iPod?
    Thank you

    Hello there,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions.
Because you reformatted your computer, your iPod does not recognize the new library because it was synced with the older library you had before reformatting. In order to get the iPod working again, you will have to [Restore|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1339] the iPod via iTunes. Once you have completed that step, try re-syncing the music and see if that helps.

What do I do when Itunes freezes during final steps of sync

Cancel the sync and try again.  But, before you do, make sure you have turned off any firewall/anti-virus software you have running.  This often is the root cause of failed sync's.

I know that there are already a lot of discussions going on about these but nothing works for me.

Some apps in iPhone are partly installed because of freeze.
When i delete them they appear again during next sync and then iTunes freezes again.
    What i already have tried:
    # Clean iOS install --> again and again
    # Recover from older back-up --> again and again
    # New user
    # New iTunes install
    # Delete iTunes preferences and cache
    # Delete all apps

It have taken me all day but it's solved!
During last sync on old MacBook Pro the new version of the iBook app was only synced partly.
That's why, when i was trying to sync on my new MacBook Pro, iTunes was freezing during sync.
Once i have synced my iPhone on the old MacBook Pro again, and iBook app was synced complete, this problem was fixed.

  • Itunes Freeze during sync

    Hi there,
Im operating Windows Vista on a Dell Inspiron e1505 and a 5th generation Ipod 80gb Classic with the latest version of Itunes(9.0.2). I've encountered this problem numerous times and have searched many different locations for an answer. Hopefully someone can provide an answer, or tell me I'm out of luck.
With the amount of music I have I don't have the capacity on my Hard Drive to store it all. Therefore, I choose to manually sync my ipod. However, as I'm syncing, whenever I near 4000 songs on my ipod, Itunes freezes indefinitely, at which point I am forced to disconnect the ipod only to see that all of the music is wiped clean. This occurs during the period where itunes is "determining gapless playback information" of the songs I have just chosen to sync. This occurs whether I have chosen to sync 1 song at a time or 250 songs. The deciding factor is the nearing of 4000 songs.
I've looked around and from what I can determine the answer may lie in the fact that not enough of the "computer's power" is directed to the syncing process; too many background applications perhaps. I've tried turning off anything unnecessary and I run with minimal programs.
Thanks in advance for any help, I'll be happy to try to answer any questions.

That sounds like it might be a library file issue with your iTunes.
If you recreate your iTunes library, are you able to get past the 4000 song barrier when you sync?

  • ITunes freezing during sync, "Delayed Write Failed"

I've been having a really annoying issue with my iPod Classic 160GB for about two months now. Whenever I try to sync my iPod with my iTunes library, iTunes suddenly freezes completely during the sync. The problem usually appears when the sync is at around 30GB out of 40GB, but it can also appear at other points during the sync.
Sometimes, when iTunes freezes, an error message appears in the right corner of my screen saying, and I'll do my best to translate it from Norwegian:
    "Delayed Write/writing failed"
"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file G:\iPodControlArtworkF10281.ithmb. The data was lost. This error may be caused by a failure on your hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file somewhere else"
The freeze leaves me with no choice but to plug my iPod out of the computer when it says on the iPod screen that I'm not supposed to, and this probably isn't good for it.
When I plug my iPod back in, the files that should have been synced up until the delayed write error appeared and iTunes froze and that should have been audio and blue, has turned into orange and "other" on the main iPod page in iTunes.
I've tried everything from the 5 Rs to even calling iPod support where they told me that this was an Apple software issue, and that it had nothing to do with either my iPod or computer. They also told me that I could solve the issue by rolling back to iTunes 7,7 until an update to solve the issue was available. I tried this, and the same problem appeared. I tried to roll back to iTunes 7,6 as well, but no luck there either.
Now I'm getting sort of worried that my one year warranty will expire and I'll be stuck with an iPod that has a software with a really annoying problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

I am having the EXACT same problem trying to sync my new 80GB Classic with itunes on a Macbook.
I restored and updated to latest ipod firmware. No change.
I updated iTunes to 8.0. No change.
I updated OS X to 10.5.5. No change.
Oddly enough, iTunes freezes to the point where it must be force quit. But it will not quit even then. I have to restart just to get back to a point where itunes will open again.

  • ITunes freezes during start up

I have an iMac bought last year.
    2.7 GHz Intel Core 1.5

    OS X Version 10.9.4
    iTunes 11.3
My iTunes starting freezing during start up about a month ago.  As soon as it begins to sync with my iPhone I get the beach ball and have to force quit.  I have tried reinstalling it, starting with WiFi off, and other hints from the forums with no success. Any ideas or help is very much appreciated.

I am having the same problem? I installed the iTunes update and it asked to restart the system... but it never came back up... just stays on the reboot page. How do I fix this?

  • WRT160N v2 freezing during large transfers

I'm trying to download large ISOs (Ubuntu & Fedora releases, usually) on one machine, connected over LAN to the WRT160N, and then transfer over wireless to my other box (which has a DVD burner in it). Unfortunately, the transfers freeze up (tried transferring to laptop & work-laptop over wireless too, both fail) when I'm transferring via the wireless. Transferring via LAN works. Any suggestions on what I can do/try to get these transfers working? The DVD burner is connecting w/ 802.11g, work laptop has 802.11n. Its a big inconvenience to have to drop the ISOs to a flash drive to bring them over to my dvd-burning computer. I'd try to upgrade the firmware, but the WRT160N v2 isn't even on the drop-down for the WRT160N drivers.

Try to play around with the wireless advanced settings
    Transmission Rate
The default setting is Auto. The range is from 1 to 54Mbps.
The rate of data transmission should be set depending on the speed of your wireless network. You can select from a range of transmission speeds, or keep the default setting, Auto, to have the Router automatically use the fastest possible data rate and enable the Auto-Fallback feature. Auto-Fallback will negotiate the best possible connection speed between the Router and a wireless client
    Beacon Interval
The default value is 100. Enter a value between 1 and 65,535 milliseconds. The Beacon Interval value indicates the frequency interval of the beacon. A beacon is a packet broadcast by the Router to synchronize the wireless network.
    RTS Threshold
This value should remain at its default setting of 2347. The range is 0-2347 bytes.
Should you encounter inconsistent data flow, only minor modifications are recommended. If a network packet is smaller than the preset RTS threshold size, the RTS/CTS mechanism will not be enabled. The Router sends Request to Send (RTS) frames to a particular receiving station and negotiates the sending of a data frame. After receiving an RTS, the wireless station responds with a Clear to Send (CTS) frame to acknowledge the right to begin transmission.
    Fragmentation Threshold
This value should remain at its default setting of 2346. The range is 256-2346 bytes. It specifies the maximum size for a packet before data is fragmented into multiple packets. If you experience a high packet error rate, you may slightly increase the Fragmentation Threshold. Setting the Fragmentation Threshold too low may result in poor network performance. Only minor modifications of this value are recommended.

  • Ipod isn't recognize by 7.0 and iTunes freezes during 1.2 installation

I have a two problems with my ipod since upgrading to version 7.0. First, when I connect my ipod to my computer, iTunes doesn't always pop up like it should. When I open iTunes, it doesn't always recognize the ipod at all. However, if I reboot, and then connect the ipod and then open iTunes manually, it recognizes. If I close out and then go back into iTunes or disconnect the ipod and reconnect, iTunes doesn't recognize the iPod. I have to reboot every time I want to use iTunes and my iPod.
Second, when the iPod is recognized and I open iTunes, it asks me "Do you want to install ipod software 1.2?" I click Install, iTunes freezes. There's this bar that goes back and forth, but that's it. The ipod itself doesn't display "do not disconnect," it's just has the main menu on the screen. I tried giving it needs some time to install, so I let my computer sit there for 4 hours, but still nothing. The same bar goes back and forth, nothing changes. I have to Ctrl + Alt + Del to exit out of iTunes. I reinstalled the ipod and itunes software from the CD and restored at least 5 times each. I keep running into the same problems. I verified that my laptop meets all of the Windows requirements for 7.0, but I can't figure out what the problem is.
Does anyone else have these issues?

I have exactly the same issues with my new 80G iPOD. I have found that when connecting to my PC, the iPOD does not start iTUNES 7. This can be resolved by stopping the iPOD Service in Computer Management, connecting the iPOD and then starting it again. Then when you start iTUNES it finds the iPOD. - http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93716
Seems like a stupid long-winded way to do things, but at least you can get some stuff on to your iPOD.
As far as using Restore goes - I just get the restoring iPOD message you described, which it blatantly isn't :((

  • Itunes Freezes during Sync on 3G & 3GS with Vista 64 & 7-64 all USB ports

To start. I originally had an iPhone 3G over a year ago on this desktop running Windows Vista 64Bit. My phone was able to sync with the PC for about a month and stopped being able to sync. I received many error numbers and put support tickets in with no avail. I then upgraded to an iPhone 3GS. Still under Windows Vista 64Bit and could not Sync my phone. It consistantly froze during the sync process. I tried all USB ports on my PC. People said to try restoring your iPhone and iTunes. I tried that and then got stuck on my restore. I had a broken phone until I was able to sync with my laptop.
I now have the same desktop Acer AM3641-EQ8200A but I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I have always had the latest iTunes version, and tried 32 bit and 64 bit versions of iTunes. I still cannot successfully sync my iPhone. If it sits there long enough it will freeze up, start to freeze my computer etc. I decided to try again last night after I got a new USB cord and had the same issue.
In addition, my girlfriends iPod will not sync to the desktop either.
I have been stuck doing syncs on my Netbook for over a year now. Optimization of 3,000+ photos is horrific on it, but it works.
People say to get an external USB that is self powered. Why should I have to do this and chance frying my PC?
The deal is this, the phones won't sync with the desktop but will sync with my netbook also running windows 7 ultimate. All USB drivers are up to date on both.
I have tried Reformatting and Installing Windows. Reinstalling itunes. Updating all drivers. Tried different versions of iTunes. I first called Apple Retail, they had no answer. I wrote apple a lengthy letter with all the Error codes, they said they would call me even though my warranty over the phone support was expired. Never got a call back after they heard my problem.
What can I do to rectify this? I am not the only one out there.

    UPDATE:
After putting a USB 2 card in my mac, all worked properly. The problem seems to be using USB 1.1.
    This is really tragic because:
    + many Macs don't have USB 2,
+ it is very difficult to find out out if USB 2 exists on your computer (why are no USB 1 or 2 details spelled out in system profiler ?),
+ there are no warnings as to the sort of issues that would be coming up with USB 1.1 (yes I know the specs clearly says USB 2, but it looks like it was working at first),
+ there are no spelled warning by the system (after all, the iTune, iPod combination could detect easily that the incorrect USB standard is being used and warn the user),
+ there does not seem to be specific advantages to use USB 2 (like speed) as the syncing peaked at 6MB/s, a speed achievable with USB 1.1
Come on Apple you can do better than this !

  • Importing music very slow 0.5x and iTunes freezes during every backup

Everytime I plug my iPod into my computer it freezes and I need to end app also while importing new CDs they are taking about 2-3hrs and it's only transferring at 0.5x. My pc is a windows xp sp3 2.68GHz 760 RAM

I have had some help and have tried many things to resolve this. Bottom line, it was the CD reader. I tried to load the same "slow loading" CD into someone else's computer and it went in faster than I've ever seen (9.5X - 13X). I borrowed his CD reader and put in in my machine and it worked fine for the 5 CD of the 100 I had left to load because they loaded so slow. This time, there was one of these 5 that read in at 1.1X. Again, I borrowed a different CD reader, put it in my machine, and it read fine. This problem was NOT program/system related: I tried cleaning files, running Adware, Antivirus, defrag, etc.) I read/burn lots of CDs and must wear them out in my laptop.

  • Found Solution(?) for iTunes freeze after files copying to iPod

I have a fairly new (2-3 months old) iPod Video and it worked fine for a good while. At some point any time I made an alteration to the files on the iPod (like a play list) or added files everything would freeze up once the action was completed. I would have to ctrlaltdel and bring up the Task Manager and force iTunes to quit. If I worked with a playlist or whatever on the iPod or worked with a playlist on the computer, everything was fine -- it was after copying files from the computer to the iPod where things messed up. Nobody seemed to know what to do... I couldn't find a solution online with Apple either -- though I did reinstall iTunes, Quicktime and the iPod software...
A week or two ago I, for some reason, was messing around while my iPod was attached to my computer and noticed I could select it for a defrag with Disk Defragmenter. I decided I'd see HOW fragmented the thing was. Pretty much! I went ahead and ran the defrag and, low and behold, everything works like it should now! Back to normal!
So, I assume that is what my problem was. If anyone else has a similar problem you might look at this...
    Good luck!
    Dell Inspiron 1100   Windows XP

By playing them you have made changes - to the last played date and the play count. If you rated or re-rated the song, that would also count as a change. If youre iPod is set to auto-sync, iTunes would write those changes back to your iPod. I'm not sure, though, why it would do that if you manually sync.

  • Itunes freezes during update library after 7.3 upgrade

When starting iTunes, it immediately begins to update the library and freezes about half way through. This is after I updated from 7.2 to 7.3. I have a LOT of songs and I'd rather not uninstall iTunes.
Anyone know what's wrong here? Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

There have been multiple posts on this topic. If you're interested, try searching the forums. (Maybe someone has a better answer than me). Here's my latest post:
My understanding is that there's a corrupt file in the library that's causing this problem--either a podcast or a video. You can search these forums for other threads on this subject.
From what I've read, you need to figure out which file is causing the hang and remove it (easier said than done).
One thing you can try is to pull all of the podcast and/or video files (you could try one or the other first, too.) out of your iTunes folder before you try to launch iTunes. Leave them on your desktop.
If iTunes launches successfully, then you can slowly try to add these files back to your iTunes folder to find out which one causes the hang.
Not ideal advice, I know. But it may be a way to get iTunes back up and running again.

  • Freeze during file import

    Hi,
Almost everytime I import a batch of movie files from a folder on my hard drive FCP X freezes about 3/4 of the way through the analysis and correction process. The files are all there when I force quit and restart but I wonder if all the import correction features are being completed.

  • ITunes hangs during sync "Transferring Purchases"

I can no longer sync my iPhone. It starts out OK and then says "Transferring Purchases from Joe's iPhone. Copying HoldEm".
It then shows abour 10% on the progress bar and sits there forever. I've tried everything I know but can't seem to get around this. Even unchecking "Sync applications" has no effect.
I am really getting fed up with Apple lately... This iPhone is extremely buggy (browser crashing, etc) - and I am an Apple fan!

I had the same problem today and fixed it straight away with the suggested solution above - I just downloaded Texas Holdem on my computer through the apple iStore - it brought up a box saying that i already had bought it so I didn't have to pay again. It took quite a while (it's a large file) but once it was downloaded and I did the sync again there was no problem at all
