ITunes Freezes On Launch Over and Over and Over...

For a week or so now, iTunes has been freezing the second I launch it on my Macbook Pro, and it's driving me completely nuts. Yesterday, I uninstalled the program using CleanApp, which deleted every last library file, and then reinstalled it. The first launch went fine, but this morning it froze up on me again. I have a Core 2 Duo Macbook Pro that I purchased as a factory refurb from Apple in April, and I brought over all my apps and system settings from my old Macbook via the transfer utility. Is this the kind of problem that would require a full OS reinstall to fix? I'm not crazy about doing that, but I will if I have to. The only other X factor I can think of is that my iTunes library isn't on the MBP but is rather on an external HD connected to my 802.11n Airport Extreme...could that have something to do with this? No matter what, it's brutally annoying and I'd greatly appreciate any help you guys could provide...

Wow.
I almost freaked out today when I was playing some really badly done music-- okay, that's just my opinion-- and both iTunes and OSX started making a popping sound and then froze, requiring a "hold the power button down deliberate crash" to get out of it.
The song is Hardcore by the group Machet-T, the album name is *Dual-Edge Blade*.
(And no, I do NOT make up these names.)
Does anyone else have this song, and if so, can you duplicate the behavior?
\thanks/

    What Windows version?

  • ITunes freezes when importing music from CD and also when playing,

Just recently iTunes has started to freeze when importing music from a CD - it just stops and the progress bar remains as it it. The whole mac then freezes and I get the spinning beachball. I can't use any other application. The same thing is happening when I play music - it's ok for a song or two and then freeze and the beachball appears. I've downloaded iTunes again and reinstalled and it's just the same. Using Safari and Mail etc is no problem at the moment.
I also have a problem getting the iMac to recognise external hard drives - it won't show them on either firewire 400 or 800. I can see my 1TB drive using usb ( it shows up on the desktop, whereas on firewire it doesn't do this) but if I try to open it and see the contents in finder, it opens, but doesn't dispaly the contents of the drive. I can see the disk size but just get a grey spinning wheel in the bottom right hand of the finder window. Timemachine does not work.

I have had the same problem & itunes crashes when i try to import a file. Now i can't even start itune. I've reinstalled itunes so many times, without a fix, I've lost count.
I did post and had no reply. I'll watch this post with interest.

  • Itunes wont even launch. i removed program and downloaded new copy, still wont lauch

itunes will not launch. it used to work on this pc. i uninstalled it, downloaded a new copy, and tried again. still won't work. help. and thanks.

i have had this issue before. try going to the tash manager and see if it's actually running the executable file. right click on your task bar at the bottom, go to start task manager. go to file>new task and type in "itunes.exe"
if this works it means that the connection between your shortcut and the root file for itunes has a bad connection. youll need to find the root file, and replace your shortcuts with a new short cut. this should be in my computer>program files>itunes.

  • Itunes will not launch after fresh install and repeated re-installs

I've been browsing around the forums here and the support system hoping for an answer to this question.
On Monday my hard drive died and I had to buy a new one. I reinstalled windows and itunes among other things. I have a brand new Video Ipod as well. I haven't even had a chance to plug it in!
Itunes worked for about 2 days and suddenly stopped working. I mean literally, if I double click on the icon and start up the program, it immediately crashes and asks me if I want to send an Error report.
I removed and reinstalled and rebooted about 3 times to no avail. I re-downloaded Itunes + quicktime just in case there was something wrong with the installer. This did not fix the problem.
I then tried messing with my "sound" settings as suggested by support and people on the forums. I can not find the option to change my sound output to 1400000khz or whatever. Nor does changing my system to "Speaker mode headphones" fix the issue as suggested by apple here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304318
Quicktime is also screwed up and will not load on websites. It shows an icon in my taskbar but when I click on it, nothing happens. Even if Itunes is uninstalled, the icon still shows up in the tray. I cannot delete the folders or find any option in Uninstall programs to remove it.
As a last resort, I rolled my system back to Monday when I had just installed Windows, default drivers and SP2. A clean system. I then installed Itunes as the very first program and surprise - it crashed upon opening.
I have no idea what to do at this point. Without Itunes my ipod is almost usless.

The quote below is from a previous thread where several people solved your same problem with the stated technique. Maybe it will work for you. Good Luck.
iTunes 7.0.2 FIX ("Have tried all 'fixes' suggested but iTunes STILL not opening").
    1. Uninstall iTunes and QuickTime.
    2. Do a search in the C:\ drive for "QuickTime". Delete EVERYTHING that pops up.
    3. Restart the computer.
    4. Install QUICKTIME ONLY
    5. THEN install iTunes......and IT WORKS.....Just remember to install QuickTime FIRST.

  • My iTunes freezes upon launch every time. What can I do to fix this?

This has happened twice now. The first time I fixed it by deleting the .itl library file and creating a new library. I don't want to have to do that everytime. I have the latest version of iTunes and a mid-2009 MacBook Pro with 8G of RAM and 750G HD.
Everytime I click on iTunes, the screen populates as it should and then I get the colorful spinning wheel. If I look in the task manager it says "iTunes not responding". Force Quitting and restarting does nothing. This time I noticed it occured when I tried to connect my phone to iTunes, the time before that was when I treid to add songs to my iTunes library.
What can I do to keep it from crashing?

have you updated to the latests version of itunes?
are you syncing over wifi if so have you tried doing so with the cable ?

  • Itunes freezing when launched.

I just upgraded to 7.5 and now my itunes will not open properly. I read other peoples posts about "missing files" and itunes not even starting up at all.. I think my problem is a bit different. When I click on the itunes application to launch.. itunes will start up and I see my playlists load up and than I get a little window that pops up asking to enter my password for my itunes account. The little window already has my username filled in and all I have to do is enter my password.. but as soon as the window fully loads it goes blank.. the window is there.. just with nothing in it and my itunes program is still in the background.. just with none of my playlists there anymore.. and on top of that its frozen.. so I have to go to my task manager to end the program. I've tried reinstalling itunes, installing quicktime 7.2, msconfig troubleshoot and using an older version of itunes.. nothing is working.

I had a very similar, but slightly different problem (in Vista). After upgrading to 7.5, I could get into iTunes, and get a song to start playing, however, after a random time (2 seconds to 10 minutes), the playback would freeze (jitter like a skipping CD), and I would loose system control (keyboard and mouse). The only way out was to 'reset'.
I tried the advice in some other posts (which is actually fro a different issue again), and uninstalled Quicktime (7.3) in 'add/remove programs'. I then installed v7.2 9from the link in other posts), and have had no issues with iTunes since.
I would suggest giving it a try. It will only take 10 minutes, and can't really do any damage.
How iTunes 7.5 and QT 7.3 got through testing is beyond me!

  • ITunes freezes at launch

The icon bounces a few times, then freezes. I've tried repairing permissions, and uninstalling and reinstalling, with no results. Someone suggested removing plist files and I looked for them, but didn't find any -- I don't know whether that's significant. Everything is up-to-date.

  • ITunes freezes, can't update ipod, windows and itunes doesn't see my pod

I have a 2nd gen Ipod with the really sensitive buttons under the screen and whenever I try to plug my ipod into my PC w/xp nothing good happens. It used to be fine about a month ago and now its screwing up. I never dropped it or did anything bad to it.
    I plug it in.
I get a windows error message in the bottom right that says "this blah blah blah has malfunctioned and windows can not recognize it"
That message soon goes away and windows makes that little ding sound.
After that iTunes just freezes up. I cant minimize it, play songs, or do anything. completely frozen.
My Computer doesnt even see it.
The ipod flashes "do not disconnect" until I unplug it.
When I unplug it itunes starts working after a couple seconds.
Sometimes it will completely drain the battery right after I charge it fully and it will reset itself and stay off.
    anybody know whats goin on?
Ive done pretty much everything on this website to fix it and nothing.
    2nd Gen   Windows XP

Are you sure that there is no way to change the
    format?
I never said there wasn't a way to change the
    format.
To change the format, select it in iTunes on the Mac
    and select Restore.
I am having a similar issue with my daughters ipod nano. It was formatted for windows when we bought it (we have the songs on a mac) but it only downloads some of her library not all. Having looked in some of the forums it suggests restoring however when we plug the ipod into the mac the button for restoring the ipod to factory settings is not highlighted. In this case how can the ipod be restored to a mac setting? We are using the latest itunes software and OSX operating system.

  • Itunes freezes on launch ever since signing up for iTunes Match

Ever since I signed up for iTunes Match, iTunes on my Mac Mini freezes up right after launch... Help!

Hi, I had a similar problem but in Windows.  The help page for that is at http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1717 and although I've searched, I can't find the equivalent for a Mac mini. Anyway, I'm posting because what worked for me was to delete the 'local' and 'roaming' profiles.  They are re-created automatically and iTunes then works fine.  But, as soon as you try to sign in to the iTunes store - BANG. It freezes every time and you have to delete those profiles again.
So I think this is a definite bug with iTunes that is linked to the sign-in process. Hence why it is affected by iTunes Match. I don't believe it's a memory issue; the problem is repeatable and no other applications are running. Do try running it without signing-in and see how you get on . . .
    Good luck.

  • ITunes freezes after launching

    iTunes version: 11.2.2
    OS X 10.9.3
    MacBook Pro Early 2011
Recently, iTunes has been freezing almost immediately after launching, irrespective of other applications running. The problem persists even in Safe Mode, and I have to Force Quit the application each time. Some times it runs fine for one song, but usually freezes immediately (not responding with spinning pinwheel).
What are the troubleshooting steps for this issue? Restarting my computer has not resolved the issue.

Plasma Prestige!  Success!  iPhone was recognized immediately and is syncing presently.  Thanks very much for your help!

After reading about your issue, I tried syncing my own iPhone and experienced the freeze as well. I scoured the Support Communities and finally stumbled across a solution. I am not sure if this fixes the problem permanently but it certainly fixed it for now.
    1. Open the Finder
    2. In the Menu Bar, click Go
    3. While holding the 'Option' Key, select Library
    4. Expand the Application Support folder
    5. Expand SyncServices and delete the Local sync file
    6. Restart the system
Plug in your iPhone after this and it should resolve the issue. Let me know if it works.

  • ITunes Freezing on Launch

I was listening to iTunes, when it quit mid-song. Now, when I launch, it says, "Genius Accessing iTunes Store" and stops responding. The only thing I've done differently than the years I've been using it up to this point is move my iTunes folder into my shared users folder so I can use it across accounts (and update play counts regardless which account I'm on--I make sure to only have 1 copy running at a time.). I had to change permissions, but once I did that, all seemed to be working well. Until now.
Same problem in both accounts. I'm wondering whether this has somehow corrupted my iTunes Library file. Any help? (Tried repairing Disk Utility permissions & trashing iTunes cache)

I had the same problem. i uninstalled and reinstalled, restored to an earlier point, then resinstalled again... then it finally stopped. But now new issues have come up. Whenever i try to check for available downloads from the iTunes Store... it freezes. Whenever i try to import songs from another iTunes account on another computer on my network... it freezes. Whenever i try to sync my iPod Touch... it freezes and stays on "Verifying iPod" forever. I don't know what the problem could be but it's really starting to aggravate me. I was thinking of buying an iPhone 4 but now I'm thinking I may not.

  • New iTunes freezing after launch, what's going on?

After downloading the new iTunes with no problem, I've discovered that after a few seconds the programme freezes from any action. It's really starting to do my head in right now. Everything was going fine, I was downloading iOS 5 when it decided to lose connection, I tried again and same thing. After that, the problem with iTunes it self occured.
After spending a whole HOUR trying to get to the point of asking this question I am seriously fed up with this. Apple has well and truely messed up any chance of trying to persuade Blackberry users that the iPod is better since the whole update is causing more problems than what it's fixing.
If anyone can help find a "cure" for this freezing, I'd be extremely grateful. Thankfully my iPod didn't get wiped during the whole problem even though it was trying to sync at the time and then black screened for five minutes before coming to life again.

I have a link for you that will help you troubleshoot this issue with your iPod classic. This link is to a troubleshooting assistant that will take you through the steps necessary to determine the source of the issue:

  • ITunes freezes when launching after upgrade to 7.1

Hello all, I was just having this problem and it was driving me nuts. It would just bounce my iTunes icon and freeze while also making everything else run a lot slower. For most of you, I'm pretty sure unplugging your shuffle or ipod will fix the problem thanks to the user JDH.
