ITunes freezes on start up unusable for 5 mins

The infamous spinning beachball shows up when iTunes starts up. I have the latest version of iTunes and I don't have a clue on what could be causing the issue.

The same thing was happening to me. First I thought my library was to blame (13300 + songs, a few movies and videos, 150 gigs), and performed all the usual procedures (repair permissions, recreate library) to no avail. Then I downgraded to iTunes 9.2.1 and voi-lá, it worked, no more spinning wheel.
Cheers

  • ITunes Freezes at Start Up

I start iTunes. iTunes Match begins, Podcast downloads begin and within 30 seconds I've got the spinning beach ball. Force Quit. Start the process all over again. I can't access the store, music, anything. iTunes freezes and I'm done.
This is beyond frustrating. I'm doing everything with the program that I'm supposed to be able to do. I'd be spending money right now in the iTunes store if I could actually access it. Ridiculous.
Thanks for any help or insight.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

  • ITunes freezes during start up

I have an iMac bought last year.
    2.7 GHz Intel Core 1.5
    8GB 1600 MHz DDR3
    OS X Version 10.9.4
    iTunes 11.3
My iTunes starting freezing during start up about a month ago.  As soon as it begins to sync with my iPhone I get the beach ball and have to force quit.  I have tried reinstalling it, starting with WiFi off, and other hints from the forums with no success. Any ideas or help is very much appreciated.

I am having the same problem? I installed the iTunes update and it asked to restart the system... but it never came back up... just stays on the reboot page. How do I fix this?

  • ITunes freezes on start up

I got the message that there was a new iTunes out and selected to dl it, and it didn't. It just froze. I shut it down and started it up again and it froze. Every time I try to start it up it freezes. I thought I would look to see if I could dl the new version and just install it and fix the problem that way, but I'm only finding 8.1, and when I try to dl my IE freezes and I have to use task manager to shut it down.
I use Windows Vista, so I can't follow along the steps in the apple support, besides all I found w/ the apple support steps was version 7 or earlier. I can't get email support because they just don't have an "other" to select and nothing of their select a box even comes close to fitting my issue. I'm at a complete loss. Any help is greatly appreciated.

After doing some searching around i found the answer.
I installed the stand alone product of quicktime and this solved my problem.
    Many thanks

  • Itunes freezes on start

When I try to open iTunes, the window opens but I cannot click any of the songs. It is frozen when I start it up and the only way to exit is through ctrl-alt-delete.

I am also experiencing the same problem. I did all the steps....uninstalled, reinstalled, tried the two solutions posted, etc.,....still completely freezes everything when launching itunes.
The itunes screen comes up with my music list shown....but nothing works after that....no mouse clicks or keyboard entry does anything except a right click <close> or a ctrl-alt-del
Anyone from Apple....please respond to this topic
My OS is Windows XP and I am on a Dell Inspiron 6000....and yes, I have done all the Windows Updates, service packs, etc.
I also did a virus scan, defrag'd the hard drive, etc. to make triple sure that it is not a hardware problem
As near as I can tell ....this issue occurred right after the itunes update

  • ITunes Freezing at Start

    Hi There,
as soon as i turn iTunes on it goes straight into "determining gapless playback" and it instantly just freezes up, i have no idea why its doing this?

That sounds a lot like a library file issue or a content file issue to me. You can find troubleshooting advice on both of those possibilities in the "User-specific troubleshooting" section of the following document:

  • ITunes freezes at start of sync with iPhone5

I am using an iPhone5 connected by cable to a Mac.  All software is current.  Multiple reboots of everything tried.
This problem started only a few weeks ago and has never happened to me in the four years I have had iphones.  When I start the sync process, the iTunes dialog hangs at "Waiting for sync to start" and I must force quit from iTunes because it is no longer responding.  If I try to sync my new iPad to the same system, I works flawlessly.  There is, therefore, some new incompatibility between my iPhone5 and my Mac.  I have read as many threads in our community as I can, and no solution works.  Help.

FIXED!  I can't believe this, but I just noticed that the problem is completely fixed.  I have no idea if it was due to an upgrade or what.  All I know is this:  when I have a problem and post it here, it gets fixed spontaneously without any other help withing days.  I can't understand why things go wrong and then right again with my Apple devices, but that has alway been the way.  Thanks to all of you who viewed this posting and sent positive thougths my way - it worked!

  • (macOS X) itunes freezes when connecting iphone /ipad for syncing

itunes is slower than normal to open. I have installed all updates, restarted several times. tried deauthorising and authorising the computer. Can't do this with phone or ipad connected as I get the beach ball almost immediately.

I haven't tried this yet as I'm not sure how to do it or whether my back up will ensure that I don't lose my music. Sorry I am not well-versed in these things.
I have received a message just now that syncing is not enabled on this computer - and when I click to enable, it says it isn't possible?

  • ITunes freezes for 60-120 secs when connecting iPod

This is weird. I have iTunes 7.6.1 and OS X 10.5.2.
Whenever I connect an iPod (my wife and I have three between us), iTunes freezes with the spinning beachball for anywhere from 60 to 120 seconds, sometimes longer. At times, when I try to drag a podcast or something over to an iPod, it won't "take"--it's not on the iPod in any of the menus. If I try to do a sync of all podcasts, for example, it freezes completely and even trying to force quit won't do anything.
I've deleted the plist files, but no luck. Any ideas?

It sounds like a hardware problem is messing with iTunes communicating with the iPod. I'd suggest the easy stuff first. Switch USB ports, switch USB cables, reset your iPod. If you are connecting via a USB hub try connecting directly to a USB port on the computer. If the iPod is still in warranty you can take it to the Apple Store or call Apple Care.

  • ITunes freezing Macbook

I have my music stored on an external HD. I have no problem copying it over from the external to my Macbook. What's confusing me is when I reopen my iTunes and it starts to analyze for gapless playback information, iTunes freezes my entire computer to the point where I have to do a hard shutdown. I recently reinstalled Mac OSX and had my iPhone replaced. I don't know if that means anything, but I'm just baffled. Thanks in advance.

my new ipod classic 160 gb powered off and won't turn back on. if i plug in to computer, itunes will not open. if i start itunes first then plug in ipod, itunes freezes up. Looking for help. thanks. Was not connected to the computer when ipod died.

I have not heard of a good reason for this to happen or how to fix. 3 days later my screen lights up and says to connect to charger.... so its back "for now". Best music player on the market when it works.

  • Settin start/finish times for a video in iTunes, video freezes for while.

This is a problem I had under iTunes 8 and Leopard, and it's exactly the same with iTunes 9 and Snow Leopard. (and was the same with iTunes 9 and just Leopard).
I often "cut" parts of video clips in iTunes, setting a start and finish time so I don't have to see the rest of the video, while not losing it either.
Most of the time, after I set those times, I want to check if my cuts are set right and go back to the video and look at it with the cuts... Well now I can't!
If I click on a video to watch it immediately, or even in the minutes after I made those changes, the video will open, but stay frozen and kinda skip on the same frame over and over (producing digital audio clipping sounds), and whatever I do, trying to FFW or anything, doesn't do anything.
If I open other videos, do other stuff and come back after 10min, it'll be OK, like nothing ever happened, and my new settings will be taken into account.
I can't believe that with a fast MBP, with a iTunes and OS upgrade, this problem continues!
Am I the only one with this bug?
Is this something that could be done?
    THanks.

I'm not sure about the error message, but it might just be easier to use an application such as Handbrake or MPEG Streamclip to create an iPod compatible version of the video.

  • ITunes freezes for minutes at a time with iPad

This is making me crazy! I sync my iPhone('s) and iPods with this computer, and while iTunes may slow down for a few seconds while the iPhone or iPod mounts, it is responsive almost immediately. Update! Now my iPhone freezes iTunes too... this blows!
With the iPad however, iTunes freezes for up to 2 minute with the spinning beach ball and shows up as unresponsive (duh!) in activity monitor. It finally starts synching and while doing so occasionally becomes unresponsive, but the synching finally finishes succesfully... eventually. I have removed and reinstalled iTunes 9.1 according to apple support protocols, but no real change. I have bit rate convert enabled, but it happens regardless of whether or not music is being added or changed. Have repaired permissions, disconnected various other USB devices, but no help so far... Anybody?

Your MyWebSearch plug-in is the cause of many problems. Google for information and advice on how to get rid of it.
If that doesn't help, you should work your way through this(Safe Mode,Problematic extensions etc ) -
    https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting%20extensions%20and%20themes
Make sure your plug-ins such as Flash are up-to-date -

    Try disabling third party toolbars.
