ITunes freezes when iPod touch 4G is connected + other issues.

I've seen a lot of people struggling with this problem and I'm afraid I got stuck with the same issue. I'm not sure when it started, but I noticed any time I connected my ipod touch 4G to my computer, iTunes freezes almost immediately. When I disconnect, it goes back to normal (most of the time) and displays a message that says: "An ipod touch has been detected but cannot properly be identified."
I tried reinstalling iTunes 5 times, all of which it comes up with what I suppose is an installation error. When I click ok on the error, installation continues as if nothing has happened. There's also been an update for iTunes but it won't download. (Note: my laptop runs Windows 8.1).
On the website, it says iTunes is 64-bit but when I download, it runs 32-bit. I don't know why this happens (I'm not exactly tech savvy) and I don't know why iTunes freezes. I also cannot manually restore my iPod as a lot of people suggested as my home button is stuck. I'm out of options unless someone saves me... and my need for my music. I've been through many forums and nothing worked.
Can anyone help?
Side note: my ipod also seems to be going through USB chords like nobody's business. It's not negligence on my part, yet they always start causing my ipod to say "charging is not supported with this accessory" then completely stop working. I had one that barely lasted a day! I'm fed up with all these problems and hope someone can help.

Thank you,
Pretty much all of the posts in that link deal with PC problems, drivers and bios stuff. Since I am running on a Mac, I don't think there is much I can do to deal with those kind of issues.
I don't seem to have any other problems with USB connections to other devices, and my iPod does work with iTunes for at least a short while after I wipe it and start over. This leads me to believe it is less of an USB issue and more something to do with software on either the iPod and iTunes. I am beginning to suspect either something with an App or using the onboard iTunes Store to download content that is somehow corrupting the iPod.
In the past, I had problems with the sync taking an inordinate amount of time to back up, which after months of research I learned that it most likely had something to do with downloading an App from the App Store on the iPod in the early days of the App Store (A problem I was never able to eliminate despite numerous restores, due to the corrupted App being re-loaded every time I used the backups. I WAS able to eliminate the problem after deleting and re-downloading all of the Apps when I nuked my iPod). My problems with not being able to sync happened shortly after I downloaded an App from the App Store (something which I refrained from doing due to fears of corruption!).
I dunno, any thoughts on this?
P.S. I am still waiting for an answer as to the fate of the content I downloaded on my Ipod. If I restore my iPod without transfering the purchases, are they ultimately lost?

  • Itunes freezing when Ipod touch is connected

Everytime I try to connect my iPod touch (2nd Gen, 32 Gb), iTunes hangs on that spinning ball and won't respond or recognize my iPod. The strange thing is that iTunes works fine with both my nano and shuffle and the iPod touch is also working perfectly. It's been happening sice I upgraded form Leopard to Snow Leopard. PLEASE help!
I' running iTunes 9 (with the lateset updates) and snow leopard.

I solved my problem. Here's whatI did: went to username/library/application support, and deleted the folder "syncservices". Loged out and then back in again. After that my iPod was syncing perfectly with iTunes... everyone with similar issues should try this, I found this in another topic in Apple Discussions.

  • ITunes Freezes when iPod touch plugged in

So last night I plugged my PB G4 into my external hard drive (which is where all my music is stored) and then plugged my iPod Touch 3rd gen into the laptop... figured I'd get the new iOS.  iTunes said I needed to upgrade iTunes first and I agreed to go ahead with the upgrade.  That seemed to work fine.  But now I can't sync my iPod... let alone download the new upgrade (iOS5).  Every time I plug it in iTunes freezes.  It shows up in iTunes and then after about 10 seconds I get the pinwheel spinning.  I've even been quick with plugging it in and then trying to right click on it and then select the back up option... or unplug it and then plug it back in quick and click on upgrade or sync... it almost tricks the thing into working... but to no avail).  I can't even do a restore.  I'm thinking I need to go back to iTunes 10.4 and sync my iPod (it hadn't been synced recently) and start over.  Is this the case?  If so, what is the easiest way to go back to 10.4?
    Thanks.

No help on this?  Really?  Here's a little more info.  When I plug the ipod in with iTunes not running, it opens iTunes.  The ipod charges but causes iTunes to freeze up.  And I can't figure out how to go back to iTunes 10.4... Anybody know?  I've restarted both devices several times... reinstalled iTunes 10.5 2 or 3 times...
I got the iPod Touch in February of this year and have synced it numerous time to this computer without issue.
Oh, and when I plugged it in the other day to do the upgrade iTunes interacted with the iPod just fine... asked me about if I wanted to update to iOS5.  Once the upgrade to iTunes 10.5 happened that's when I started having trouble.
I can't believe I haven't gotten any help on this yet...

  • Itunes 11.4 freezing when ipod touch 5 connected to windows 7 64bit

Every time the iPod touch 5th generation is connected to ITunes in Windows 7 64 bit, the stupid iTunes freezes. The only way to unfreeze is to disconnect it. This problem has been going for a very long time. Upgrading iTunes does nothing. ITunes 11.4 does not fix the problem. There is no way to sync iPod touch with windows 7. This getting very frustrating. When is someone going to post a fix that permanently fixes this problem that has existed for a long time. Anyone got a brain that works?
A few months ago someone posted a fix that required to disable a windows update that work for a while. Now iTunes is back to its old freezing behaviors. Fix it Apple now!..

This is a useless reply. It does not work. Uninstalling and reinstalling does nothing to fix it.  Itunes always freezes when Ipod is connected. This is a problem with Windows 7 64bit and is very common problem. Itunes doesn't want to cooperate with 64bit windows. If you search the internet, lots are having the same problem. This problem has existed for 10 years. Every new version of itunes never fixes the problem. Why can't Apple and Microsoft work together to fix the issue. This is unacceptable. Apple software designers are very lazy and stupid.

  • Itunes freezing with Ipod Touch on Windows 7x64 when setting up

    Hi,
I have an Ipod Touch 3G and a new Dell XPS16 Core I7 with Windows 7 x64. The Ipod cannot be Synced or restored properly. When connecting it it says there is an issue with the Ipod and it needs to be restored. The actul restore seems to go OK but after on the screen to setup new Ipod when I click OK Itunes just freezes. Seems like other people have similar problems.
I've put some troubleshooting steps and findings below.
1/ Though Itunes was corrups so uninstalled and reinstalled, no luck.
2/ Wanted new clean windows install anyway so formatted drive and reinstalled windows from scratch. Updated all drivers and BIOS to latest version. Installed latest Itunes. No other apps just Windows and Itunes. Same result. Itunes library is also empty so there is nothing to sync.
3/ Tried different Ipod (3rd Gen Ipod Nano). This works fine can restore and sync with no freezing issues.
4/ Tried Ipod Touch on 2 different PCs (one with XP 32 bit and one with Windows 7 32bit). On these machines the Ipod touch works fine.
It seems that there is either an issue with X64 Windows 7 and Ipod Touch 3G. Any suggestions.
If I go to Apple I'm sure they will say the Touch is fine because it works with 2 other PCs. If I go to Dell they will probably say the machine is OK because other Ipod works fine and I don't have issues with any other devices.

    Hi,
Thanks for the information. Will try this later and post if it helps. i have tried many many supposed fixes but no luck. At the moment I have clean Windows 7 (no bloatware) latest drivers, latest BIOS and only Itunes installed. Still does not work.
Spoke to Apple on the phone who said they think it's most likely USB drivers. I was using this Ipod with Windows 7 32bit RC for months without any such issues. As soon as i got the new laptop it has been non stop problems.
I did notice Apple have not updated the software since late October, 2 months ago. I have logged a call with Dell but I have a sinking feeling that that will send me back to Apple.
In my case I noticed when it freezes that Itunes is using a reasonable amount of CPU which does not change. In my case 13% of my 4 core I7. I have also noticed that other USB drives tend to lok up and not be accesible when Itunes freezes. Do you get similar symptoms?
My gut feeling is Itunes x64 has some issues. The Itunes App does not seem to be 64 bit either even when installing 64 bit version. May just be the drivers which are 64 bit. If we can find a few people with reproducable issues on different hardware I will forward this to Apple as I still have an open support ticket.

  • ITunes freezes when iPod connected

I have Windows XP and iTunes version 11.0.1. Since I've updated iTunes I haven't tried to sync my iPod touch 4th generation. When I connected my iPod my iTunes freezes and I can't click on anything. Once I disconnect the iPod then iTunes works fine. What should I do? Thanks.

I've had similiar problems when it comes to freezing. What I did was simply wait. I loaded my iPod and the mouse pointer showed the hourglass for a few minutes, then the iPod simply showed up on iTunes. Try rebooting your system, connecting iPod, and giving it a few minutes.

  • Blank titles, itunes feezing when ipod touch connected

This is a problem I really cannot get my head around, every time I connect my ipod touch it freezes itunes, and itunes doesn't show songs titles.
I have included screen shots, can someone help please?
Im using the latest itunes on windows vista, latest ipod software.

Think I solved/found a workaround to a similar problem, although, with Touch connecting to MacBook OS 10.5.8. Uninstalled and reinstalled fresh version of iTunes to no avail, but by wiping my Touch and restoring, the problem was solved. BUT once I downloaded a podcast episode directly from the iTunesStore same hang returned (if using force quit the iTune app shows as unresponsive, removing the usb connection immediately frees the hang, replugging rehangs). After wiping Touch and restoring, sync works fine until adding content to mobile iTunes directly on Touch. Hang returns. One more wipe/restore and now, until there is upgrade to Touch OS (3.0 [7A341]) to fix what I think is a bug, I'll only add content via iTunes on my MacBook.

  • Itunes freezes when ipod is connected to computer

Whenever I try to connect my ipod to my laptop my itunes will freeze up. I try opening my ipod using "my computer" but then that will freeze up as well. I'm trying to restore my ipod to see if that will help, but since my itunes freezes, it can't detect my ipod, therefore I can't restore it.
My ipod is set to where I have to manually put songs on it instead of it syncing automatically (unsure if this has anything to do with the problem?)
My itunes and ipod work perfectly by themselves, and I haven't had a problem with connecting my ipod to the computer until now. I can't figure out how to fix the problem. Help!
(I've also plugged my ipod into every usb port on the computer and it doesn't make a difference).

  • Itunes freezing when ipod is connected

So I've been banging my head against the wall the last few days trying to figure out why my ipod is causing itunes to freeze, and ultimately not sync any new songs. In short after downloading itunes 9, anytime I attempt to connect my 120gb ipod classic itunes freezes up. I have done several, several things. I've already exhausted all the support suggestions, as well as countless google searches trying to resolve my issue.
    Things I've tried:
-Stopped, and restarted the ipod service
    -Reinstalled itunes
-Cleared the ipod photo cache folder
-Tried all usb ports on computer
    -Tried brand new usb cable
-Formatted my ipod, in which case itunes didn't freeze up, but told me it was corrupt, and I needed to restore it. Right after restoring, however, the exact same thing occurs (except now I have 0 songs).
-Tried simply leaving it sitting there (waited something like 3 hours).
-Ran a disk scan, passed everything until I reached "HP DETECT TEST 0".
My OS is 32-bit 7, and I had roughly 6k songs on my ipod prior (simply throwing that in there as I've seen similar posts saying they can only reach around 500 songs). What's odd is my iphone 3G works perfectly fine with itunes 9.

I am in the same boat and posted in reply to another thread like this. I have two 80gb classics. One works just fine on my pc, the other locks iTunes and my computer up so I can't even see it as a disk. And I only have about 6-8gb of songs on it. I have tried reinstalling iTunes several times now, and had to do restore a couple times on my laptop running Win7 with iTunes 9, which will read it just perfectly. I restore the pod, plug it into the pc which will then read it perfectly, restore and sync on the pc which works fine, eject it and all seems to work fine. If I wish to plug it back in though, it starts all over. It can be read fine on other computers and I didn't have a problem till 9 was installed with my Vista system. someone please get this figured out! I plan to call support later today.

  • ITunes 8.1 freezes when iPod touch is plugged in, unfreezes when pluggedout

I've just updated my iPod touch 1st gen to 2.2.1, it was working and syncing perfectly for two days. This morning, when the iPod touch was plugged into iTunes, iTunes froze when the iPod was recognized by the computer. I tried plugging the iPod touch out of the computer, and iTunes almost instantly went back to functioning correctly.
If I attempt to start iTunes with the iPod already plugged in, it starts up frozen and does not function. I have to use Task Manager to manually quit the process every time.
This is all still strange since the only thing different I did from last night is download several podcasts and update one app. I've tried deleting these podcasts and uninstalling the app, but to no avail.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Dave,
Try putting the iPod into recovery mode and restoring it in iTunes as shown here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1808
This would erase the contents of the iPod but you can check iTunes for a backup before restoring from recovery mode. This article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 provides more information about iPhone backups.

  • ITunes freezes when iPod classic is connected

Since downloading version 7.7 iTunes freezes every time I plug in my classic iPod. The program does not recognize the device and, if I am playing a song, it finishes he song and then stops completely. I'm pretty sure the problem is with iTunes. Had no problem with same mac & iPod for 18 mos. I don't have access to another mac, but the two window machines I've connected to with the same USB line recognize the iPod. Any ideas? Merci.

I have this same problem with new version 7.7. We have like 30 gigs on the 80 gig ipod and I hear that it may take itunes up to 40 minutes to respond to this large of an ipod?!? Help ITUNES!!

  • PC freezes when iPod Touch is fully charged

Has anyone experienced this problem before? : When my iPod Touch is connected over USB to a PC and it's (almost) fully charged, all of a sudden the entire PC freezes. Moving the mouse or typing anything on the keyboard has no effect; everything is completely frozen. The only thing I can do is reboot the PC. Also, when this happens, the iPod wakes up (it shows its "Slide to unlock"-screen). Apart from that, the iPod itself still functions normally.
I didn't have this problem until recently so I'm suspecting it's either a bug in one of iTunes' background services (since iTunes isn't running when this problem occurs) or the iPod's firmware. I've got a first-generation iPod Touch with firmware 2.2 and iTunes 8.0.2.20, running on Windows XP Pro SP3. Also, I connect my iPod to the PC using a universal dock (current model).
I have already tried reinstalling iTunes and tried using different USB ports, but that didn't make any difference. Currently I'm trying to see whether it helps to connect the iPod to the PC without the dock. I'll also try to see what it gives if I am running iTunes whilst charging.
I've also seen some forum posts elsewhere with similar issues, but none of these are of much help. (http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1067146 , http://forums.ilounge.com/archive/index.php/t-162474.html and http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=795077)
Does anyone have some more info on this problem? Thanks!

You're right about the random thing; at first I thought it only happened when the iPod was fully charged, but it has also happened on random occasions...
Anyhow, I actually managed to get my iPod Touch (1G) charging again, without freezing the computer. The downside is that I can't sync.
    What I've done is this:
    * I have moved back to the latest version of iTunes (8.0.2.20). I also have the latest firmware on the iPod Touch (2.2).
    * I have disabled the following Apple services/startup-programs: iTunesHelper, AppleSyncNotifier and Apple Mobile Device
To do this: Go to Start > Run,
then type "msconfig" (without the quotes), click OK,
then go to the "Services" tab, remove the checkmark on "Apple Mobile Device",
then go to the "Startup" tab, remove the checkmarks on "iTunesHelper" and "AppleSyncNotifier",
then click OK and you'll be asked to restart the computer.
    * When the computer has restarted, a window'll be shown that says you've modified your configuration... You'll probably want to check the checkbox in this window; otherwise this window'll pop up every time the computer restarts...
Now your iPod Touch should be able to safely charge without freezing the computer. When you start iTunes now, you'll get the message that says the iPod won't work because the Apple Mobile Device-service hasn't started.
I have disabled this Apple Mobile Device because I'm quite positive it's the cause of all this freezing. If you do need to sync your iPod, it's possible to enable the Apple Mobile Device-service for a while, and then disable it again.
Just do the following to start it:
    * Go to Start > Run
    * Type "services.msc" (without the quotes) and click OK
    * In this new window, look for the "Apple Mobile Device" entry in the list; double-click it.
    * Change "Startup type" from "Disabled" to "Manual"; click "Apply".
    * Click the "Start" button in this window to start the Apple Mobile Device-service.
    * Click OK and then close the "Services" window.
    * iTunes will now recognize the iPod Touch again, but the you'll be at risk of freezing the computer...

  • ITunes freezing when iPod plugged in...

Recently I noticed that a vast majority of my music had dissapeared from my iPod, as if I had deleted it. I have no idea why such a thing woud happen, but I figured that it wasn't a problem since I could just plug it into my computer and sync it. However, after syncing several times, the music did not return to my iPod, and now iTunes freezes whenever I plug it in. Without it connected, iTunes appears to function perfectly fine, however when I connect my iPod it freezes immediately. A long time after unplugging it again, iTunes gives me a message about it not being recognized (or something to that effect). I have already tried deleting the contents of the Sync Services folder, which seemed to help many others with this problem. What can I do to fix this?

Your nano uses a totally different way to sync with iTunes than the touch. You need to follow the troubleshooting tips in this article about removing and reinstalling iTunes.

Recently my iTunes freezes everytime my ipod syncs. I don't know the causes for it and when I try to add songs or videos it will freeze up everytime. Does anybody have a clue about this? My iPod is 4th generation iPod and I'm using a mac.

    - Try a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Try just backing up the iPod by right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and select Back Up. If successful then you can restore the iPod.
    - Also try here:
iTunes for Windows Vista or Windows 7: Troubleshooting unexpected quits, freezes, or launch issues
    - However, you say you have Windows 9, that maybe causing the problem.
